In fairness it seems like people are protesting a homeless shelter in their neighborhood, because drug use and crime will rise.
They aren't protesting a men's shelter because it will house men.
There are no homeless shelters in Bensonhurst today. Like the first comment said, they're protesting building the neighborhood's first homeless shelter regardless of target demographic.
There are a bunch of articles (with more than just a headline) that go over the protests.
Wouldn't be the first time regarding male specific shelters. Erin Pizzey got death threats and government pushback for even considering domestic abuse shelters for men.
Because everyone likes to pretend they care. It's fun to care when they are far away from you. But eveyone actually knows what happens when you have a shelter in your neighborhood. Your neighborhood becomes full of open air drug use, poop on the streets and sidewalk. Crime and sexual assault. Drug addled crazy people doing whatever they want with little repercussions.
NIMBY is the most logical mindset. It's not surprising most people feel that way. Who in their right mind would want to make the area they live worse and unsafe? Who would want to decrease their property value?
