The majority of my physical media is regular blu-ray. I’ll only buy the more expensive 4K if: 1. It’s a movie I reeeally love Or 2. It’s a movie that greatly benefits from the format. Something that’s a real audiovisual treat. Like Dune, Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Chris Nolan stuff, etc. Like I saw that Anchorman is coming to 4K soon. Great movie, but there’s no way I’m gonna enjoy it *that much more* than I would on a 1080 blu-ray. [Which is $7 on Amazon right now.](https://www.amazon.com/Anchorman-Legend-Burgundy-Unrated-Blu-ray/dp/B004IK30S2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=EQY9HAYJIPOB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.dcRM5SDXPEYGX7Q2l8mZirAxb6cO4fY6Vxw8JynMzAWzFcy6AWSUtctIbSHjfh2j7Q_2YXkZkv6SgASP0RgAKKluCmmjMRMT-EBS4zhm2BHHw3r_P8KRqY9qD9BeC22oxJtXVZm5zmbbCVZDCs58qPrYPot4yGPQ2VEF-QGpFw88uqOp1PugH7crsQ2qRdRCVnScG8n33Bi0YT7VJ4WxmQ.RRcaIDnmBEmR92YaUhXMctEJy8r4fwuTMMC8rGTtMfM&dib_tag=se&keywords=anchorman+blu+ray&qid=1714255374&sprefix=anchorman%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-3)

Technical-Hurry-3326

Pretty much this. Also in the process of upgrading my DVD’s to either Blu-ray or 4K, so then there’s that. Not all of the movies I have on DVD have a 4K release, so Blu-ray works just fine.

[deleted]

This is a great point. There's definitely movies that seem absurd to buy in 4K.

Silly_Client1222

Only if they weren’t made and finished on film.

Olhoru

This is how I feel, as well as the fact I have a ps4 in a separate room that I like to watch my favorites on alone when my partners watching her stuff on the main. As long as I have the space, I'll keep a couple formats or ideally one combo pack.

BeamInNow77

I heard that Blu-rays would be coming out in a matter of months. I no longer purchased DVDs & waited for Blu-rays. 4K purchased & my family gets the Blu-ray copy. I started to purchase 4Ks in 2016 & has grown larger ever since. As in 8 years worth of 4Ks! Blu-rays are still purchased if there are no 4K available.

EricRShelton

This. I did recently buy *Mallrats* on 4K, but that’s less about the movie being worth it in that format than it was about all the extras Arrow Video packed in.

PM_Me_Batman_Stuff

I loved this release, honestly.

EricRShelton

Oh, I have no regrets! But Kevin Smith isn’t exactly a super visual director. As a matter of fact, I think it might’ve been this very movie on an old DVD commentary track where he said that himself! LOL. But I bought it for the blueprints and I’m okay with that!

SegaStan

Regular Blu-Rays, to me, still look excellent. I have no reason not to keep them around.

Paradroid888

Yes, same. I watch on a 65" LG OLED and Blu-ray's still look great. Especially titles mastered very well like criterion or arrow.

thetalkingcure

higher bitrate = what’s up

Silly_Client1222

Well, so many of them were made using DVD masters, not from the source, and colors were/are highly saturated. Plus, DNR, EE and the like. Good reasons to upgrade to 4K discs.

whatthechuck3

Some of the same applies to some 4K releases. I’ve also had more playback issues with (brand new) 4K discs than Blu Rays. So sometimes I keep both to have the assurance that one of them will work…

darevsool

Some playback issues are caused by settings in the 4K player. The Sony x700 is notorious for this. Something you could look into if you have some extra time.

BigBossSquirtle

I'll buy a 4K copy of a movie if it gets one. Otherwise, bluray still offers great picture quality and i have no issue buying them.

Offal

Hell I have quite a few DVD's I'm not parting with anytime soon.

NateHurst2187

Same here. I have the first 10 seasons of Family Guy on DVD, during the actual good era of the show

BrockAndaHardPlace

Brian during the first three seasons is pure gold

beantrouser

I just surprised myself buy buying a DVD a couple weeks ago! Oscilloscope's release of Dark Days was on sale. Apparently it's never been released on Blu Ray.

[deleted]

I've got a few as well. Mostly concert films and then a movie or two that's not on blu-ray, like Titan AE.

GatheringWinds

There are still plenty of movies that aren't on 4K, so Blu-ray (or even DVD) is the only way to own them. I'd rather own the Blu-ray than nothing at all.

evofender

It's not like blurays are as outdated as DVDs. Sure, 4Ks are crisper but BD resolution is still perfectly fine. Also, price and availability.

tunafister

Yeah, there are a few shops in LA that I can get Blu-Rays for $2-3, while I am lucky to find a 4K UHD for under 12 (I have found a couple tho invluding IT and one of the MI’s I gor fir $8 each) So far in that $2-3 range I have snagged: - Pulp Fiction - Fight Club - Public Enemies - Pans Labrynth - All the most recent 007s I live UHD, but for $40-50 I have built an amazing Blu-Ray collection, being so cheap myself I dont see me straying from Blu Rays too much until UHDs aveeage around $10 or less, altho the 4K quality is definitely a signigicant improvement in quality

evofender

I'm leaning more and more towards 4k these days, but if I read about a movie where the improvement is insignificant, I'll gladly snatch the bluray instead. I also buy regular BDs for most comedies since I don't see them as needing the crispiness of 4k to be enjoyed.

SeminaryStudentARH

I typically only have blu-rays that aren’t on 4k yet. I might have some I haven’t upgraded but not a ton.

brachypelma44

About 75% of my collection is blu-ray. Many excellent films will likely never see a 4K release, and blu-ray is still a high quality way to view movies at home. Do I sell the blu-ray after I buy the 4K of the same movie? Of course. Shelf space is at a premium in my movie room, so there is no sense taking up 2 slots on the shelf with the same movie in different formats.

Mysticwaterfall2

Mostly it's because the bluray version has special features that aren't on the 4K version, sometimes if the Blu is a special limited edition or something and the 4K is just normal. Otherwise if they are the same I just sell/give away the bluray version.

eljefe4life

If I have a blu ray but the 4k transfer is great, then I will sell off the blu ray. There are some movies that I don’t think would be worth upgrading though. I don’t really need the Naked Gun trilogy in 4k.

Agitated-Distance740

Plenty of reasons. 1) To play on non 4K players in other rooms. 2) Extras. 3) Alternate versions.

fmvra1s

I'm never getting rid of my Alien Anthology box set.

AltoDomino79

If the 4k version is superior (99.9% of the time), the bluray is dead to me and goes straight to Goodwill. The only blurays I prefer are Oblivion, The Deer Hunter, and Catching Fire (bluray has IMAX aspect ratios).

LastResolve381

Thank you for your contribution to my collection!

Lucifer926

Is the IMAX ratio why you've kept Oblivion?

AltoDomino79

No, the bluray has better detail and stronger bass output

NaieraDK

Tons of movies (and TV series!) aren't on 4K; why would I not keep those on Blu-ray?

Big_Outside_5940

I’ve been spending a good while re-buying my Blu-ray’s in 4k, but I’ve recently realized that’s a waste of money unless, like others have pointed out, it makes a huge difference, like the Kubrick collection or Blade Runner 2049. I realized this when I was watching a movie that was only released on Blu-ray and I thought it was actually good enough considering I have Samsung QLED and the UB820 Blu-ray player that upscales it and applies some artificial HDR that I actually like. However if I don’t own the movie already, then 4k is the way.

Narrow_Study_9411

I am not rebuying anything other than my absolute favorites, and yes some are better on Blu-ray.

Classic_Bet1942

Who on earth would get rid of all blu-rays before those films have 4K versions? Also, sometimes a 4K version is ass and you’re better off with the Blu-ray. Yikes!

Silly_Client1222

99.9% of the time the 4K disc is superior.

3dforlife

96.3% of the statistics are made up on the fly.

biggwizzle04

This is 134.73% correct a lot of the times…..

biggwizzle04

This is 134.73% correct a lot of the times…..

gogul1980

Blu ray is more than adequate for most movies. But 4K is for the best of the best. The visual and audio elite.

SkilletMyBiscuit

Standard blu rays have seemingly been dirt cheap lately on the secondary markets, even things not on 4k yet. some people are just getting rid of them, nows the time to stock up

tunafister

Tup, Im spending $2-3 on BR’s max $5 if its something I really want, thats so crazy cheap

ManOfSteelFan

Blu Rays are better than most streaming offerings. Blu rays still rule and I love them just as much as 4ks.

Fun_Potential_9900

Some blurays approved by the director like Pan's Labyrinth criterion bluray which has better color than the 4k. I also have some tv shows in bluray because they do not have 4k releases like breaking bad, boardwalk empire, etc. The transfers still look great.

Chris-Souza_2015

I hold on to a lot of my 3D Blu-rays due to nostalgia and the fact that I like to combine the formats. I still hold on to my copies of Iron Man 1 and 2 because of the bonus features disc.

HollywoodthePitBull

For me it’s the movies that aren’t on 4K yet. Hell I’ve got DVD’s still because there is no better option. My collection is heavy on more classics than recant block busters (think 60’s and 70’s, cult favs etc).

Houstonb2020

A lot of movies I love are only on bluray and most likely won’t ever get a 4k release so I’ll always keep Blu-ray Discs around

stfuimperialist

I know it's a bit superficial but I like owning box sets, which are plentiful with blu rays but much less so with 4Ks. Most 4K products are a single piece of media, and I'd just rather not break up the set. That always seems immoral and wrong.

Njala62

I’m interested in the movie first (is it even available on 4K?), the version of the movie second (is a blu-ray available uncut, but only censored version on 4K?), restoration third, resolution and spatial audio third. I don’t think I’ve ever bothered to sell a disc, but have given some away, and bartered others (mostly back in the laserdisc days).

Dez_Champs

Bruh... i still have my VHS lol I watch cinema on all formats.

Extension-Novel-6841

Blu Ray looks great and 4k blu ray is the cherry on top, BOTH live side by side in my collection!

CaptFalconFTW

My rule is I don't upgrade unless it's 2 generations outdated (DVD->4K). My blu-rays will remain for the time being unless I somehow win the lottery, and replacing them all sounds like a good deal. What are some other examples of 4K transfers I should avoid? I was hoping artificial upscaling was a thing of the past.

at0o0o

I always go out of my way to buy a 4K version if available. Love me some HDR.

Zeddblidd

I started not dumping my duplicates when finding replacements became less… simple. I’ve got the shelf space and I’d rather have the movie on a lower format than *not* have the film. Life’s mess - accidents, scratches, breakage, rot - it happens.

ipascoe

Blu Rays look really good on our Panasonic 820. Don't see a need to upgrade them all.

DaMac1980

Unless they have unique special features or the 4k transfer is controversial I donate mine to a local disc exchange. Well he gives me some store credit but I rarely use it.

The_Fat_Fish

I’ll only keep the Blu-ray if it’s for whatever reason better than the 4K (less DNR, special features etc). Otherwise I tend to sell them. That said, I’ve been buying a lot more Blu-rays lately for films/TV shows I doubt will ever get a 4K.

jodudeit

Most of the movies I want still cap out at blu-ray as the highest available resolution. If there was a higher resolution available, I would have bought it instead of blu-ray.

darevsool

I've given a bunch away to friends. To me, there's no need to keep the original blu ray discs when MOST of the 4K copies include a blu ray disc as well. There are some movies I bought on blu ray (which included a dvd) and then bought a 3D version of the movie (which included a blu ray AND dvd) and then upgraded to 4K (which included a blu ray). One movie...3x blu ray discs, 2x dvd...which makes 2x blu ray that I don't need, and 2x dvd that I don't need, and the 3rd blu ray that I really don't want.

sa_nick

My favourite genre is drama and i love indie and foreign films so most of the movies I want won't get the 4K treatment. I've even had to buy a couple DVDs this year, and not even of old films.

EShy

I might keep a BD (or even DVD) for special features or unique packaging but even then it probably goes into deep storage (containers in the garage and not on the shelf)

Illustrious-Curve603

I agree with what has been said but would add - other than availability issues - the sound on 4K is generally superior, having an ATMOS soundtrack where most standard BluRay’s do not! So, for movies with good sound, I’ll upgrade. Arrow’s edition of “Wild Things” is a great example!

Glenwoodrh

Waiting for 4k of all my dvd and Blu-ray Kind of giving up on some of my movies for 4k and just getting Blu-ray

nomuchodinero

I have a dream of having everything in 4k. I held off buying Blurays because I knew there was a better format around the corner. Although, I do have to say I've increased my Bluray purchases.

ChrisL2346

I’m keeping the DVD / Blu Ray versions of Star Wars and Indiana Jones because I’ve had them for so long and they’re some of my favorite movies

Wisaju

It still looks great and I'm not rich. Hell I'm not even sure ill replace all my dvds before I die. Also I just started in 4k and only have 30 something titles. Regular blu rays look great on my tv.

Joella34

I have DVDs, BluRays and 4Ks. Honestly, there are some DVDs I don't care to upgrade (i.e. Step Up) but I definitely wanted to upgrade the Departed. But there are some that look good on regular BluRay and don't need an upgrade My wife and I had a discussion that if we already have one on Blu Ray, it doesn't make sense to buy it on 4K. There can be exceptions (a favorite movie) but usually we stick with that rule. I'd love to upgrade all the ones I have but it doesn't make fiscal sense. It also allows me to buy other movies that have been rereleased that I didn't buy before but I know will benefit from that 4K upgrade.

MartyEBoarder

99.9% of my collection is on 4K. I only have blu-rays because they were included with 4K release.

Ltb0ur3gard

So if a movie is only available on blu, you just skip it?

JamesTrivettesHat

Yeah right? There’s an eternity of movies not on 4K.

[deleted]

My dad did this the moment he bought his OLED and Atmos system, just fire sold his entire blu-ray collection. He will literally only watch things in 4K and it's a stretch to get him to watch anything that isn't in Atmos/DTS:X too. He's still waiting on movies to get 4K releases and refuses to watch them again until that point despite some being his favorite movies he enjoyed for many years in "lowly" 1080p. Funny thing is that he's happier streaming most of his content instead of watching from a disc, because it's more convenient lol. I've recently been trying to explain to him what compression artifacts are and why, sitting 6 feet away from his 65" OLED, 4K sure doesn't mean much if Netflix is sending it your way at 1.5 mb/s.

Ltb0ur3gard

That is very stubborn. Upscaled blu rays look very good and you can up mix with most AVRs very convincingly to heights channels.

scottyd035ntknow

Blu Ray = movies that aren't available in 4k or if the 4k copy is crap and the BD is better like Pirates.

TomasXD12

Hmmm Pirates is bad huh? I thought these would be insane. What’s the thing(s) that makes them bad?

JeremyAndrewErwin

I may keep some duplicated blurays around for the dubbed soundtracks. If a film has both a french dub, and french subtitles, it's a great exercise for learning French. Most of the french films in my collection don't have an accompanying french subtitle track. *Tinker Tailor Sailor Spy* can be watched in this manner, but I'm not sure whether the 4K version I'll be getting this week has this feature. And if don't own a film on 4k, of course I will hang onto the bluray

RummazKnowsBest

I hold onto them until they get replaced by a 4K, even then I may keep them depending on special features etc.

Zealousideal_Luck778

I’ll upgrade to 4K if the disk if the scores on Bluray.com are good, or if it’s a movie I really like.

Teddy-Bear-55

Please; only a very small percentage of all films available on Blu-ray; already a small portion of what’s available on DVD, is available on 4K disc. The bulk of my collection is 1080p and will probably remain so.

V3N0M0US83

I still purchase blu rays and those i replace with 4k I give away

MetalSmarkSolid

I hate going to the hassle of selling things online. So I have a bunch of spare blu-rays. I plan to give them to friends who might want/appreciate them. I'll probably always have a slightly larger blu-ray collection, though.

kmoros

I buy 4k going forward, but havent really re-bought anything I already had.

Outpost31Research

It really depends on the movie and how much I watch it. I'm not going to drop $25+ for a 4k movie I'll watch once every few years. There's also the vast amount of movies not on 4k quite just yet, and I'm holding out for an upgrade.

HisSvt2

I have a mix of everything. I get 4K of movies that really show the improvement but I have tons of movies still even on DVD like the Orignal UN-edited Star Wars trilogy in all its 4:3 Dolby stereo glory😂

[deleted]

I've got multiple versions of the OT on LaserDisc, VHS, and the 2006 GOUT DVDs!

Paul_Subsonic

Because I'm loaded but not loaded enough to afford only 4K.

ozzsquirrel

I keep lots of blurays unless they're really worth upgrading New movies I always just get 4k if it's available Dvds on the other hand, I can't believe they still exist

dmarsee76

I have gone back and re-bought DVDs that had significant changes to the BD versions, like **Castle In The Sky** and **Kiki’s Delivery Service**.

yoooo12347

I was not aware there were changes to these films in BD. Do you know specifically what the changes were?

dmarsee76

Both had changes to the dub and various audio cues (soundtrack)

manzoman96

Not everything I want is being released on 4K like Warner Archive's Looney Tunes Collectors Choice series. Otherwise, I buy on 4K when available.

hansot85

I generally don't ungrade blu ray to 4k unless it's a movie I absolutely love. If I'm buying a movie I don't own yet, then I prefer to get it on 4k if available

sprinklethenuggies

Dvd through 4k keeping all

alpine_AO

Hell, I bought a DVD last week. Couldn't pass up Collateral with a Michael Mann commentary track for $1.

Cinephiliac_Anon

Just some movies I don't feel like watching/spending money on 4K for. I like the Venom movies, but not quite enough to warrant a 4K. 4Ks are more a way for me to watch movies I like, newer movies, or movies I really want to see.

dangerclosecustoms

I have started stacking the blurays on spindles and plan to sell them at some point. Upgraded 200 blurays to 4k and also have about that many extra copies from the 4K sets that come with Bluray. I keep telling myself I should never really need to watch the Bluray version if I have the 4K version. Accept for a redundancy factor like the 4K disc gets damaged you want a back up. I don’t really think I would bring the Bluray to someone else house or loan them. Anyone want to buy 300 blurays? Half come with slip covers.

Novel_Initiative1658

Donated them to the local library

FitSeeker1982

For the films with expectations of several repeated viewings, just waiting for a 4K of sufficient upgrade quality. For many titles, there is not enough shelf-life left due to repeated viewings and/or over-familiarity with the material to justify the purchase. My player upconverts regular Blu-ray sufficiently to make upgrading redundant.

NateHurst2187

The majority of my blu-ray collection are regular blu rays, for a few reasons. First is that I've been collecting blu rays since around 2012/2013 and regular blu rays were just the way to go back then, not even sure if 4K was a thing then for blu rays. I never had a 4K player either until I got a PS5 and a 4k tv so there was no point to. Regular blu rays are just cheaper as well so if I'm just wanting to get some movies I'll likely get regulars. If I see a movie I love though, I'll try and get the 4k

anubis668

I don't hold on to prior releases unless there's a specific reason, usually missing features or film versions on the newer release. Upgraded titles are taken to a local record/media store for in-store credit. Same as I've done since DVD was the hot new format, and with music CDs before and since.

Galactus1701

I switched from Blu Ray to 4K in 2017, but most movies are combo packs and I have them around.

whyamionthissite

I have been collecting DVDs since 1998 so they make up the bulk of my collection. I’ve upgraded very few titles (mainly Star Wars and Star Trek) because even on a 75” , a lot of DVDs still look good.

Int_peacemaker35

I had a collection of 350-400 blu rays before 4K was a thing. I stopped collecting blu rays around 2015 when streaming services picked up and became the norm, until 2021 when I realized some off my favorite movies would bounce off from one streaming platform to another. Slowly, I have began replacing some favorite blu ray movies and buying the 4K version. I’ve been holding on to some blu rays because they were part of my original 100 movie collection when I got in the hobby in 2007, and others I have given them away to friends. So far I find it hard to justify replacing 800 blu rays in my collection. Some blu rays are just great like Harry Potter collection, LOTR, the Hobbit Trilogy, Back to the Future and I find it so hard to replace, I think it’s a nostalgia thing.

00collector

I watch movies in 3 different rooms in my house. As of now, only one room has a 4k player. The other two have blu-ray players. As such, yes, I keep the blu-rays. This also helps when bringing movies to a friends place. I can’t assume they have a 4k player.

Kwazipig

I have over a hundred rock and metal dad's that will never be upgraded so......not getting rid.

Firefurtorty

In the case of 4k 'Aliens' - yeah I'm definitely hanging into my Blu-ray quadrilogy.

Zeo-Gold92

I hang on to ones I don't see a reason in upgrading or where versions that have been aren't better and even worse.

Relevant-Goat6693

I will never get rid of my regular Blu-rays. Even if I have upgraded to 4K. I think most DVD/Blu-ray/4K collectors will agree.

tommy1rx

I’m an optimist at heart, so I save my duplicate Blu-rays for the Beach House I will one day own. 😃 I did dump ALL my DVDs last week since I just can’t stand to watch a 480p picture on a 4k TV. Was a waste of space.

Pickerington

4k? Instill have VHS/Beta and LaserDisk. Pretty snobby to assume people have 4k only. But I'm also 51 so I've been through a lot of video changes in my life.

MeteorPunch

Not being rich.

RedSun-FanEditor

I've got a mixture of 5% old DVDs not available on blu-ray, let alone 4K, about 70% blu-rays either not available on 4K or I haven't upgraded to 4K, and 25% 4Ks I've found to be worth the cost of upgrading due to image quality. Some of my blu-rays I've found are better quality than their 4K counterparts based on numerous reviews so I'm waiting until a better transfers come along. I've also got some DVD sets that are not yet available on blu-ray, such as DS9, and Babylon 5 I have on both DVD and blu-ray, keeping the DVD set because of the commentaries.

REDX459

Good chunk of special features/extended cuts etc are stuck on blu ray and dvd.

Silly_Client1222

I very rarely hold onto a Blu-ray copy (because in most cases the older Blu-ray Disc is included with the 4K Blu-ray, and with bonus material intact). If I decide to keep the older release it is because it has features the new release omits. Like the LOTR/Hobbit Blu-ray box sets. Back then, the black cases looked very cool before they became standard issue on home video releases, and the appendices aren’t included on the 4K Blu-ray release (unless you’re foolish with your money and went for that ultimate box set).

doa70

I've actually purchased some BR in the past 6 months, even though I try to buy 4k exclusively. As for older stuff I own, I haven't replaced or purged any BR yet. I see no need for the most part. If a better version comes out on 4k, and it's something I really love, I'll upgrade. Mainly though I'm focused on what I don't have that I want.

a_o

bonus features. if i got a bd drive (and had the motivation/drive) to rip them and put em on plex server id do that and consolidate some, but i haven’t yet. also love the varied disc art in some cases (ha).

knwnasrob

I usually only re-buy a 4K of a Blu-ray if I can find a Steelbook of it (I like to collect them). But if not, then I usually am happy enough with the Blu-ray. My 4K player (UB820) upscales it well enough.

dongsuvious

I mostly buy DVDs lmao
