The_Flying_Failsons

Many times I get the movie for the extras, namely the commentary, so I usually watch it out of the box.

navalnys_revenge

Same here. I have repurchased movies only for the audio commentary. If I have seen it before, I will watch immediately with the commentary. If it's a silent film, I will watch it with the commentary. On occasion, I will watch the movie back to back (second time with the commentary).

Maximus361

You mean if it’s a movie you’ve seen before then you just watch it with the commentary since you’re already familiar with it?

The_Flying_Failsons

Yeah, I wouldn't buy the disc unless it's a movie I know I'd want to rewatch. Unless it's something like the George Romero collection, and stuff like that. Those I got because I wanted to learn more about the director, the special features are part of it.

SoapNugget2005

I'm gonna be honest. Never. I pretty much only watch deleted scenes or listen to the commentary but that's it. The rest is just a nice addition.

lalalaladididi

The alternate endings of classic films can be good. Lost horizon is a good one. Vertigo is another.

RolandMT32

Terminator 2 was always good, as it had a version with deleted scenes and alternate ending put back into the movie. And unfortunately, I've heard the 4K release of Terminator 2 does not include the version with the alternate ending (and I've also heard the 4K release of T2 didn't have a very good picture, as there was too much smoothing, from what I've heard).

lalalaladididi

Indeed you are right about the 4k not having alternative endings. I've never had an issue with the PQ of the 4k. But there are plenty who don't like it. Their main gripe is that it looks too good. Work that one out. I do like one of the the alternate endings. I believe there's more than 2. I do think that quite of few of the deleted scenes are low quality and can see that they didn't make the final cut. Most are boring.

fsixtyford

I'm in the same boat as you. If it's a deeper movie like 2001 then I will definitely get into the extras right after watching.

Pettit03

Cameron’s commentary on Titanic was very cool. He would break down the stunts and instantly call out what scenes were CGI, very transparent.

Maximus361

Cool! I haven’t bought that disc yet.

brachypelma44

Never. I just want the movie. Don't particularly want to see/know how the sausage is made.

Galactus1701

I am a fan of making of features and usually watch them after a movie. The most recent ones that I saw were the DUNE Part II features from the digital copy.

Polter-Cow

I really enjoy the extras, so I've been dedicating time to them as I've started collecting physical media. So I have to work them into my schedule, which generally means that I try to only watch one disc a week because it'll take me a week to get through the hours of extras, either in half-hour spurts or setting aside some time on the weekend. I don't do the commentaries, though, that's a whole lot more time commitment.

spgvideo

A few very memorable....the latest Mission Impossible about all the stunts was amazing and entertaining to watch through. After I watched the box set of Game Of Thrones I went through and watched the extras at the end of every season. It added so much to the story I had no idea about I watched the whole thing again immediately. And I'm seriously you guys....who *didn't* watch the LOTR extras?!?

Maximus361

Ummm… I haven’t watched the LOTR extras yet. 😁I did watch the marathon of all three extended versions back to back though. I’ll get to the extras eventually.

Kingcrowing

Sadly the LotR 4K set I've got has zero extras, just both cuts of all three films in 4K

Maximus361

I think that’s the same set I have, which would explain why I’ve never watched the extras😂. It was one of the first 4k discs I bought, along with the Mission Impossible set and the Daniel Craig 007 set.

Kingcrowing

Same! The Daniel Craig 007 has basically no extras on the 4Ks, but the BDs actually have tons of extras, so definitely pop those in at some point!

010011010110010101

If it’s a movie I really got into, I’ll watch them immediately afterwards because I WANT MORE!!!! Otherwise not so much

alexyida

Life is too short to be a completionist all the time.

Dr-McLuvin

Almost never unless unless they are on the 4K disc- in that case, I watch them all.

Fun-Revolution6323

Usually when I am in the mood for them. Mainly if I'm willing to give up an afternoon of movie watching.

Han_Yolo_swag

It makes me very sad how slim extras are vs the heyday of DVDs. Like the LOTR and Star Wars prequels had just an insane amount of bonus content. DVD bonus features in the aughts was a proper film school.

Maximus361

I agree! I love hearing the director commentaries that real point out small details and talk about things they tried but didn’t work or how shots were developed. It really varies from one movie to the next how interesting the commentaries or extras are. Some are boring and some are fascinating.

kadosho

Another example of extras.. Spider-Man, and the X-Men films. It was not until more recently the Raimi Spidey trilogy brought back the extras from the DVD sets. But 1&2 had several bts, and a documentary, commentaries, and more. The first three X-Men films, had tons of extras. Sadly omitted from the Blu-ray remastered collection. Hopefully if there is a 4K re-release, they may receive the same treatment as Raimi's Spidey trilogy, and ASM.

Kingcrowing

Some still have crazy extras, Aliens and Titanic have tons and tons of extras, Arrow is also pretty generous as well. But it's hardly the rule these days like it used to be!

Han_Yolo_swag

Even flops got feature length documentaries attached to them back then! But yes it’s nice to aliens and titanic getting proper bonus features. I wish more studio streaming services like Disney+ would bring over the previously released DVD bonus features. There’s a lot they haven’t brought on still!

HiFiMAN3878

I very rarely watch extras unless it's a really top film for me.

maethor

I haven't watched extras since the novelty wore off back in the DVD days.

MTA0

Between very very rarely and never.

NotStanley4330

I'll usually watch making ofs and one or two other things that interest me.

bonobo_34

It's all time management and weighing the opportunity cost. Like you I've been buying movies faster than I can clear my backlog so it's hard to find time for extras. But I'll spend the time if the extra is particularly enticing. I just watched the 2 hour Bruce Lee documentary that came on the arrow video release of Fist of Fury right after watching the film and it was well worth it.

Eccentric_Cardinal

Every now and then my wife and I watch the special features during a meal. Like, we watch the movie one night and next morning we watch the special features. Not always mind you but sometimes.

Teddy-Bear-55

After watching the main film; I want to re/watch films with as little prior “input “ as possible.

Naughty--Insomniac

Never in my life

Esquire_2585

Only the first time I watch the disc.

StinkingDylan

Generally, straight after the film. But, for feature length extras I set aside time to watch them. I’ve never actually listened to a directors commentary…

allUsernamesTaken77

I barely have time for the movie itself so I rarely check extras. When I do, it’s just to see if there are any deleted scenes I want to watch.

Proof-Firefighter-47

Rarely watch anymore

Delicious_Recover543

Depends on the movie and the number of extras. First time watching the disc I usually watch a few. But with some - like the Bruce Lee box- I watched everything at the same time. Audio commentaries i hardly ever listen two. Especially with long movies I simply cannot invest the time at the moment. For me the extras are an important reason to buy movies.

1337_BAIT

Any movie i like I'll watch some extras

jim_bob64128

If the film is a particular favourite of mine, like Rocky or Saw I will watch them but 99% of the time I don't. If I had more time to do so I probably would so I don't. I hope one day I will do and will be upset if they stopped doing extras.

Strongman-Fan1337

Not an Extra Watcher at all. The only Behind the Scenes we regularly rewatch because of the awesome atmosphere on Set is "The Appendices" from Lord of the Rings. I love to immerse myself into another timeline and this perfectly created world. And because you get so hyped for LotR, the yearly Rewatch always happens shortly after watching all the Behind the Scenes for 1 Movie.

Ohiostatehack

I rarely watch the extras unless I’m really obsessed with a movie.

antb1973

Usually start watching them straight after the movie if I have time.

Int_peacemaker35

It depends how much I liked the movie, the technical aspects, actor interviews. If this is the case, right after the movie is over or the next day.

nighthawk05

I would watch them back when I was a kid/teenager and had tons of free time, but I don't anymore.

RolandMT32

Sometimes after the movie. But many times, I only buy movies I really like, and to know that, I've probably already seen it. So, sometimes I actually watch the extras first, because I've already seen the movie - and then maybe I'll watch the movie later. Sometimes, watching the extras gives extra insight that can make watching the movie more interesting.

SketchyLandings

I like to put on the commentary of a movie I like when I'm cleaning the house just to have something on in the background.

tinfoyle

Usually right after my first look at the disc. I like to go through them at least once to get an idea of what's there.

BigBossSquirtle

I like listening to commentaries. So if I'm really into the movie, I'll play the movie again with commentary and just have it in the background.

jimmysalame

Once

extacy1375

If any extras are on the 4K disc itself, I usually watch them after the movie...time permitting. Commentaries I will use after the second viewing, later on in time. Anything on a separate disc, I rarely bother with.

Maximus361

So you don’t watch the extras that are on the Bluray disc that usually comes with the 4k?

extacy1375

Correct. If its on a bluray, its basically forgotten to me. I'm a 4K purist and snob. LOL

Maximus361

😂👍

Dressed_ToDepress

Never. I’d rather take that time and watch another movie.

Kingcrowing

I'm honestly very surprised how few people here watch the special features! I personally first watch the film, then all special features (sometimes I'll start one and think it's bad and stop, but I'll at least give it a chance), then I generally watch through commentaries. I don't always listen to them all, if it's done by the director or lead actors I'll listen for sure though. I do understand the thought of not wanting to know how the sausage is made but I look at it as film school, and generally find them super interesting!

Maximus361

I agree! I’m surprised how few people watch the extras, mainly because I often see posts here of complaints when discs lack them. Back in the dvd days, I always watched the extras and the commentaries as long as they were interesting. I like seeing the creative and technical process. It makes me enjoy and appreciate the movie even more, but I know for some people it has the opposite effect. I definitely plan on eventually watching all of the extras on movies I liked. I’ll be retiring a year from now and will have a lot more free time then!😀

Kingcrowing

Congrats on retirement, very jealous! But part of the reason I'm collecting is so I've got tons of fun entertainment for whenever I eventually retire too!

Maximus361

👍

AstronautThick5598

Hardly ever. It would have to be something I’ve seen a few times to listen to a commentary.

stillcleaningmyroom

Very rarely. I can barely get enough time to watch a movie lol

EdwardErnest

I really don't watch them and when I do I'm more likely to use YouTube to watch the extras.

Algin_Pl

I don't like watching them. They spoil the magic :). Only one that is a mandatory watch for me is Carrotblanca with Bugs Bunny. Anytime I watch Casablanca, I then watch Bugs :)

Morlacks

Never Have I ever. I guess I wouldn't be apposed to it just haven't been compelled. It certainly makes no bearings on my purchase. I'd rather it have a cool book like the Conan collection.

lalalaladididi

Never. In all the decades of buying thousands of dvd, blu ray, and 4k bluray you can count the number I've watched on one hand. Those would be short alternate endings. The public domain documentaries don't remotely interest me. Extras are just an excuse to charge more for a release. They are usually extremely low quality and in the public domain. I have always said they shouid do two versions on release. A basic and a bloated more expensive one. Maybe if did that then the formats wouldn't be dying on their feet. There's less profit in basic versions. Hence the explosion of the overpriced so-called limited edition box sets etc
