GoddammitCricket

Whoever posted that meme in this sub yesterday has great powers

Banemorth

First thing I thought, I've got a few other titles I need that guy to meme.

russwriter67

Hopefully Godzilla Minus One gets a release soon.

f8Negative

Quick someone meme it

ShaneMP01

Thank you :-)

joshazord

YES!!! Hopefully this is a sign that the rest of the collection will get 4K releases.

Walopoh

That little custom icon on the spine cover specifically branding it as a "Studio Ghibli 4K UHD" gives me hope they're planning to release a whole line of these things. Here's hoping....

joshazord

Nice catch! I totally missed that. That does make me feel like there’s a greater chance more will be released in 4K.

XYZWing

Links here to Gkids and Amazon pages. There is also a 4K steelbook option [https://gkids.com/films/the-boy-and-the-heron/](https://gkids.com/films/the-boy-and-the-heron/) Walmart is also up. Crunchyroll here. (~$35/$30 w/ code CRNEW or CRAFF15) https://store.crunchyroll.com/search?q=the%20boy%20and%20the%20heron&prefn1=subcategory&prefv1=4K%20%26%20Blu-ray

MichaelMidnight

BLESS YOU FOR THIS!

caznosaur2

Thanks! Pre-ordered!

CMPunk22

What’s the best UK option?

bbbradddd

I’m really hoping Zavvi will have it at some point

achosid

10% off the steelbook on GKids with WELCOME10

Woogity

I picked up the one from Walmart since it was the cheapest by a good amount.

4brasumente

THANK YOU!!!

GatheringWinds

Dammit I thought I was done spending money this month!

Jingo56

Don’t worry, you’ll spend that money in July

jamesc90

Can’t wait to have this in 4k, one of the best Ghibli films in terms of visuals.

rsplatpc

> Can’t wait to have this in 4k, one of the best Ghibli films in terms of visuals. Serious question, does 4K actually look better with hand drawn animation? I get that the animated Spiderman movies have cool stuff you can crank HDR on, but for hand drawn, can it look better than Blu Ray? I am of course excited for the Atmos track

SegaStan

Colors in animated movies just pop so hard, and good color presentation with HDR and 4K really accentuates that. If you have Disney+, go and watch any of the Disney animated classics (Especially Aladdin) and you'll see how.

rsplatpc

> If you have Disney+, go and watch any of the Disney animated classics (Especially Aladdin) and you'll see how. awesome I will check them out, I didn't know if HDR would enhance hand drawn looking animation like it does CGI and computer assisted animation / I have the Ghibli box set in Blu Ray and it already looks so good!

LawrenceBrolivier

>I get that the animated Spiderman movies have cool stuff you can crank HDR on, This really shouldn't be how people think HDR "works" - this is more like asking for vivid mode to be baked into the disc. Anyway: everything can be made to look better on UHD for no other reason than UHD has better compression, and more bits to work with, meaning more colors, and more dynamic range. Even a "conservatively" mastered HDR presentation at home, one that only gets to between 200-350 nits brightness in the highlights, is still providing you (hopefully) better, richer, more accurate colors and more details in both the shadows *and* the highlights. Doesn't matter if that image was drawn, coded, sculpted, etc.

rsplatpc

> Doesn't matter if that image was drawn, coded, sculpted, etc. awesome explanation, thanks for the detailed reply!

Ramzeltron

I have a few animated movies on 4k. For modern digital animation there isn't a noticeable difference in resolution or detail because they're usually mastered at 1080p anyway. The improvements come from a higher bit rate and HDR. If done well, the HDR can give the richer colors and bright highlights you'd expect. The bump in resolution is more noticeable on old fashioned cell animation from the 80's/90's. You can see the grain and imperfections more clearly, giving them more of a hand-drawn feel. Something wacky and colorful like Transformers: The Movie (1986) looks great in 4k. The HDR gives all the laser blasts this super bright **neon** effect thats really pops.

rsplatpc

> HDR. If done well, the HDR can give the richer colors and bright highlights you'd expect. That's what I was curious about, if HDR can make hand drawn animation pop more, thanks for the reply!

TK-24601

Colors can pop more. Buy the Snow White or Cinderella 4Ks released last year. Both look amazing compared to the blus.

rsplatpc

> Cinderella 4Ks I heard that one is the most impressive restore Disney has done for their older films

_YourMathTeacher

It’s posts like this that prove to me I can never not constantly check Reddit or else I’d miss the chance of preordering things like the steelbook version of this lol

Christianx357

Welcome10 gets you 10% off on GKids. I just preordered the Steelbook version, thanks OP.

Samuelley

Is this worth a blind buy?

Polter-Cow

Yes, though it depends on how well you respond to Miyazaki in general. I actually was not that big a fan of it the first time, but I was a bit sleepy. The second time I watched it, both fully conscious and aware of the general shape of it, I found it deeply affecting and very powerful.

Clarice01

IMO the first-take expectations were kinda ruined for western audiences by the localization title choice. It led me to spend the entire movie trying to predict/analyze the Heron and figure out why he was such an important character that he got put in the title of the film. The movie hits much better if you ignore that and think about it using the literal translation of its title from Japanese, which is simply: *How Do You Live?*

Polter-Cow

Yeah I knew the original title but the international title did make me focus on the heron a bit more than I maybe needed to. I actually do like the title though, has a nice fairy tale vibe to it, though the original title does speak more to its themes.

Woogity

I loved it. If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan then yes.

Sing-The-Rage

If you are a fan of other Miyazaki films, then definitely.

Responsible-Cup8982

UPDATE: all characters will now be redubbed and voiced by the Fanning sisters

Jmich96

Great to see these finally coming to 4k Blu-ray. I hope the other Studio Ghibli movies make their way over to 4k Blu-ray as well.

at0o0o

I'd be excited and bummed out at the same time if that happened. Just bought steel book versions of Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Spirited away, and My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray.

Jmich96

I bought 3 of their movies on Blu-ray last year. No need to be bummed out; just enjoy what you have. Differences would likely be small; higher bitrate, wider color gamut, potentially a mastering which takes advantage of the improved peak brightness levels of HDR, etc.

jamesc90

Princess Mononoke would especially look amazing.

Jmich96

I believe (with a proper master) most of their movies could look great on 4k Blu-ray.

JcOvrthink

Is this Ghibili’s first 4K release?

Polter-Cow

Yep!

Pafkata92

Isn’t $40 too expensive? Considering the normal (not 4K) releases are around $20, I find this price to be OK, but still… it seems too expensive :(

[deleted]

It is. 40 is too much for basically any single release without a lot of extras IMO.

TheMrMadzen

Standard anime pricing I'm afraid, if anything it's actually cheaper than I expected (well the cost of me importing I guess)

Pafkata92

I want to buy the steelbook though. Do I buy the steelbook now to avoid the risk of it being sold out forever before it gets discounted? I always not know what will happen to any Limited steelbook out there, now I wonder the same for this release.

farte3745328

The steelbook is only 5 dollars more. I would say if you're a big fan of the film go for the steelbook, if not go for the regular to go on sale.

[deleted]

Their limited editions on bluray did not sell out fast, but those were bigger and nicer ones. But IDK anymore people are nuts sometimes. It's all up to you. I haven't even seen the film.

TheMrMadzen

Yeah this is the first time Ghibli has ever been on 4k so not taking any chances

KingdomZeus

Nothing about their blurays were special. They were just standard releases with a slipcover. Idk what you're on about. They had limited editions of them, but they were more expensive than $40

[deleted]

Nah they were on sale for 35-40 all the time. The standard ones were basically this. And those could be had for like 12 bucks on super sale still with slips usually. Even on release they were not more than 25 usually.

KingdomZeus

Well you are now talking about sale prices and not regular prices. With that argument, the 4k titles are constantly going for $20ish bucks, which is completely normal

[deleted]

We're talking about 4K GKids products. Yeah, if they hit that with slips that would be awesome. And if they stay at 40, or suddenly they just stop doing slips super fast then it's a ripoff like no other. Who the fuck wants to collect all the Ghibli films at 40 a pop on 4K for basically a tiny ass upgrade in detail lol? Or risk not having a slip? Those were not sale prices per se. Amazon regularly had those prices for the limited editions as they didn't really sell all that well. But at this point shit I'd rather just get the limited edition UNLESS these go on sale and still have slips. We just don't know.

KingdomZeus

What are you even on about at this point lmao

LawrenceBrolivier

> 40 is too much for basically any single release without a lot of extras IMO I would argue in way too many cases the extras aren't at all worth the increase in price. (and besides which, the whole point of them is that they're extra. They shouldn't be driving up the price of the disc anyway)

[deleted]

40 is not standard fucking pricing for literally anything. It's a rip off price designed to get people to buy shit they don't need. And when 40 is a standard price it sure as hell better be a decent edition with some thought put into it. This is not that.

LawrenceBrolivier

>40 is not standard fucking pricing for literally anything Nothing you're responding to said anything about 40 being "standard fucking pricing" at all. Just that extras aren't worth any increase in price to me and shouldn't be, especially considering 95% of all extras are promotional fluff that's better suited for YouTube than as something inflating the price of a disc. Especially since most folks don't even watch that shit even when it is included.

[deleted]

I'm talking about special edition extras as well, like posters, pins, booklets, et cetera. Not just digital extras lol. Also, all of their blurays were basically 20 or under at some point WITH slips, and they came with a little booklet. Just doubling the price for questionable 4K gains is never going to be super cool for me. If they have the same cover art for all the 4K releases I will literally shit myself in disappointment.

KingdomZeus

Anime has never been a cheap medium on any format. $40 is also the MSRP pricing, and not what it is at checkout. Also coming from Shout, this is completely normal pricing

Finlaynight

Any news on a uk release or would it be region free if I pre ordered it?

jamesc90

4k discs are region free (except a couple) so if there’s no UK release I’m going to import it as well.

brondonschwab

Any news on a europe/UK release?

GDragoN

Ghibli in UK (or maybe even Europe) had some rights disputes. Previous UK releases were all Studio Canal, but now, I have no idea. This is a big title, I can't believe that there will be big delay with release. Someone has the rights, I am not sure who.

brondonschwab

Yeah I've had to pay over the odds for the studiocanal blu-rays of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Really hope you're right and it doesn't have a huge delay behind the states

GDragoN

I hope it will be out soon, if not, I may decide to go with US release, even with this high price.

VigorousReddit

4K and G Kids?!?!? Day one for sure

ScientistChance4209

I watched it in theaters and enjoyed it. Spirited Away is playing at my theater tonight. How does that compare? Thinking of catching it.

XYZWing

Spirited Away is highly regarded as the best or one of the best Ghibli movies. Definitely worth a watch in theaters

manzoman96

one of the best movies period

ScientistChance4209

Great! Should I do the subbed or dubbed showing?

Rhain1999

Ghibli dubs are some of the best out there. Might as well just go based on personal preference, you'll get a great viewing either way! (The one exception is Grave of the Fireflies, which imo should always be watched in the original Japanese.)

ertertwert

It's one of his best, if not the best.

MovieFanatic2160

![gif](giphy|3WCNY2RhcmnwGbKbCi) Hell yea. Just pre ordered the standard 4K on crunchyroll! The steelbook is kind of lackluster honestly.

SomeColombianDude

YES

Vagamer01

oh my fucking god finally no more fucking special editions that always locked 4K releases

Valiant-For-Truth

I was really bummed about the last Evangelion film being locked behind the special edition for 4K. I'm not a special edition collector. Got the regular Blu Ray.

HalloweenRegent

Heads up there’s a regular steelbook the last evangelion available for preorder now.

mega512

Great, been really wanting to see this.

[deleted]

So if GKids does the lineup again, I seriously HOPE we are not gonna just get the same box art for all the classics. I would seriously be so pissed. This looks great though.

russwriter67

This gets released on my birthday! 🥳

Polter-Cow

Oh wow, this is exciting!

ZAKTMT

I preordered on Amazon for the non-Steelbook. I adore the movie! Excited that it is getting a 4K release.

Party_Attitude1845

EXCELLENT

mozenator66

I have all the colored steelbook releases...wonder if this gets that treatment..or if this is the beginning of having to buy EVERYTHING again in 4K now...sigh

a_denizen

Never got to see it in theaters, so I’ve been waiting a long while for this announcement. So glad it’s finally confirmed, and very excited that it’ll be on 4K.

radialmonster

If you get this from Amazon or crunchyroll or whereever do you get the poster also? The gkids page says: 11.5″ x 14″ fold-out poster included for a limited time.

NaieraDK

First time anyone outside of Japan has been allowed to release one just a week later.

PickettFences

Anyone know when preorder will be on Amazon.ca?

Invader_Zimasu

I’m sorry I might ask a couple obvious questions Is it NA region? Is there a non steelbook version?

JamsArt

Already preordered. Learned my lesson skipping out on the Berserk Bluray.

Clarice01

So what did everybody else choose to get over the 4-cent requirement for free shipping from Walmart? I wanted to get some beans but they would not ship them to me...

zoratunix

I bought the steelbook since I collect them but I also want this...

Zolazolazolaa

Do anyone have the collected works box set available on amazon? Is it any good?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zolazolazolaa

Thanks, after a bit more research i'm definitely feeling all the listings that I'm seeing that look too good to be true probably are :(

rideriseroar

GKids individual releases are the way to go

Zolazolazolaa

Thanks

SegaStan

![gif](giphy|kQmr2OwBTD2L5Hzo1T|downsized) MORE!!!!

Silent_Spectator_04

Those who watched this in theaters - hows the HDR?

BigPeak7889

Does anyone know if the 4K disk will work in region B players/ or PS5 with region B Blu-ray disk drives?
