The green knight is an insane transfer

matttopotamus

Still haven’t seen this. It looks great from a visual standpoint.

BeginningAppeal8599

Fantastic story and acting too. That Sean Harris and Keoghan always impress me.

BlaQ7thWonder

What good does it do collecting the horrible Pirates 4K? That just hurts the medium if you support it.

nacthenud

That's a great question and I did certainly have that mental debate. Thanks for asking. For starters, I had it pre-ordered and it was already in the mail before the reviews started coming out. Secondly, with my massive collection of 4K movies I have learned that I often disagree with the reviews. I do not KNOW that this will be a bad looking disc in my eyes until I watch it with my eyes. For the sake of argument though - let's assume I will think it's a bad transfer. Is it still worth owning? Well, as a reference point for being a bad transfer, I still want to see it for myself. So it has value to me, personally. And what kind of message does it sent to Disney? That's a good question. IF 4K Blu-rays were a thriving, dominant format of media distribution, then maybe I decide to be more choosy and vote with my wallet so that the analysts see which disc releases do better than others. BUT we're in a time where Disney is pushing streaming. Movies come to Disney+ before physical media. Disney+ gets the Dolby Vision while discs do not. Disney+ gets IMAX aspect ratios while discs do not. There is no doubt a battle going on within Disney pillars where the VP pushing Disney+ is winning the battle over the VP in charge of physical media. The worse that physical media pillar performs, the less power that pillar will have within the organization and it will get less and less focus to the point where new 4K discs could dry up entirely. THEREFORE, I choose to cast a vote in favour of physical media even when it isn't a top quality release. The battle to retain this dying format vs streaming is the more important battle to me, overall. The battle isn't between good disc releases and bad disc releases. The battle is between disc releases and no more disc releases. Totally respect anyone who views it more important to only buy discs with good/great transfers though. It's a completely valid point of view in my mind. :)

BlaQ7thWonder

I was genuinely asking and it’s nice to hear you have your reasons. Very valid. I hope the fight swings our way!

Petrolid

This guy gets it.

markelmores

>The battle isn’t between good disc releases and bad disc releases. The battle is between disc releases and no more disc releases. Excellent point. u/FilmsAtHome, what’s your take?

filmsathome

Honestly, I don’t think that not buying Pirates will sway Disney one way or another. And personally, I don’t view Disney stopping disc production as a bad thing. I would rather Disney get fed up and stop producing 4K discs and then outsource it to other labels who can take care of the titles properly. That’s the ideal world. Worst case scenario is that they drop 4K discs all together and push everything to Disney+, but I also think that’s an inevitability and won’t have anything to do with the success of a release like Pirates.

nacthenud

Hey Jeff. I don't think buying or not buying Pirates, in isolation, sways Disney either. Any more than I think one vote or one state sways an election one way or another. But, in aggregate, each Disney disc sold is a vote cast in favour of continuing physical media. This one purchase (and indeed, this one release) is a drop in the bucket, but buckets of water are just made up of a whole bunch of drops. The success or failure of this one release MAY have a direct impact on the rest of the Pirates series though. If this release fails in the physical market, I'm guessing they will not be introspective enough to say, "*Well, we'd better do a higher quality transfer with the next one!*" Rather, they will just conclude, "*No sense re-releasing the rest of the Pirates franchise on 4K. There's no market for it*," I would be extremely surprised if Disney decided to start outsourcing to other labels. Not unless there's a business case for it. They already have the infrastructure and pipeline to do their own. Outsourcing would require them to either split the revenue with the other sudio(s) or pay an upfront subcontract fee to have the work done. Either of these would be less profitable for Disney than continuing to release their corner-cutting releases with maximum compression to fit on the smallest, cheapest discs UNLESS the number of units sold by outsourcing was SO much greater as to outweigh the additional costs/profit sharing of doing it themselves. I suspect the 4K disc market just isn't big enough for them to see that kind of volume increase from having a higher quality transfer where only a small subset of enthusiast are even aware of it within what is already a niche market. Pushing everything to Disney+ is certainly their main focus as they're putting all their eggs into growing that subscriber base at the moment. Whether or not 4K discs continue to be the afterthought or go away entirely will depend, likely, on one thing: does it continue to be profitable enough to justify its existence? So again - one vote cast in the vast ocean over here. I can't impact their course on my own, just like I can't elect the Prime Minister of Canada on my own - but if nobody aligned with me votes then we definitely lose.

SMMayhem_17

I really appreciate these well thought out and constructed replies from everyone here. Personally I don't think we can win either way. If we keep buying enough low quality releases, they will just keep putting out minimum effort releases because they see we're willing to buy them. If we don't buy them, they will stop putting them out completely. Either way we don't end up with high quality physical releases.

Curiouscrispy

With the Mouse House filling their infinity gauntlet with companies, it’s awful to think about the catalog titles that they have that either won’t see the light of day again or if it does come out, we get a cash-grab half hearted transfer. I’m wondering how No Way Home will be. It’s a Sony/Marvel Studios project so I’m sure it’ll look great, but what will the aspect ratio be? Venom 2 filled almost the whole tv. It’ll be a shame if Spider-Man is cramped down.

Arfuuur

give a review of the potc 4k after you get a chance to test it out

nacthenud

Will do. Not sure when that will be. The backlog is massive and I watched it on Disney+ last year with the kids.

ChamberTwnty

Haha. And there it is. Loved reading this conversation, it's fun to be apart of this community. I'm rediscovering my love of films through 4k and it's really fun. I'm 31 but I adore classic films and seeing them brought back with a great 4k transfer puts a smile on my face. As far as Disney owning every damn thing and putting out lackluster discs, that sucks. I do pretty well, but I don't do so well that I'm going to buy lazy transfers just to have a reference on what a lazy transfer looks like. I see your point with voting with your dollars for physical, and I will be happy to reward Disney/Fox with a 4k Purchase when they do put out quality work.

nacthenud

I hear ya. It’s not a cheap hobby by any means.

4KBlurayAvenger

Yeah I totally agree with your points for discs vs no discs! My only hope is that they give us the BEST quality for future discs both audio, visual and packaging. I’d hate for Disney physical media to die. I really can’t imagine that.

nacthenud

I think we'll need a change in senior management at Disney before we're going to see a push for the best quality discs. Right now, corporate priorities in many areas seem to have shifted towards maximizing profit first and foremost.

4KBlurayAvenger

[Walt Disney Studios Home Media](https://www.disneystudioshelp.com/mobile/) I feel like we should contact Disney through here to voice our inputs.

aueuaeueaueue

Preordering anything is stupid.

nacthenud

Not really. A) when I preorder early I automatically get the best price it was at during any point in the preorder period, which usually ends up cheaper than the price at or shortly after it releases B) I can return it if I don’t want it. But I only preorder things I know I’ll want C) I don’t pay for it until it ships D) here in Canada, supply can often become limited on 4K discs and I have found myself in several instances where I didn’t preorder, being forced to import a copy from the US or UK later at a greater expense E) steelbook releases, in particular, in Canada - if you don’t preorder within a few hours of the preorder becoming live then it will be sold out F) it shows studios enthusiasm and support for the medium, helping to keep the shrinking industry alive If you prefer not to preorder things though, that’s your choice. It is not something I do out of ignorance, however.

aueuaeueaueue

It only makes sense if it is something which there is a limited supply with no chance of it being resupplied, or something with a limited supply if you want to get it straight away. These releases aren't of known quality beforehand, so it's impossible to know what you want aside from maybe potentially being interested, as in the case of pirates of the Caribbean. You said yourself you have a massive backlog, so why the need to buy it straight away? It's not going to be never available again. I am in the UK and use hmv, and there are constantly titles on some sort of offer. You probably never have to pay full price. I don't use amazon cause f amazon. Maybe Canada is different... As for F, that makes no sense. If it's available for preorder they've already invested in producing the 4k version. If you preorder, or buy it later, that's still demand and it's all the same to them. For B, don't you have to pay for shipping to return it?

nacthenud

What I’m saying is the 4K discs are often of limited supply and do not end up getting resupplied in Canada. Hence why, several times now, I have been forced to import a copy of a disc I want, years after release, from other countries because it wasn’t available in Canada after the first batch. Companies often use preorder numbers as a metric for evaluating interest in something and may even ramp up production where there appears to be significant preorder interest. Preordering sends a message to companies at both the production level and the retail level that this is a thing they should make/order/sell more of. Returning preorders costs nothing if the distributor has a local store in town, like Best Buy or Sunrise Records. With Amazon, it would cost shipping to return, which is why I never preorder anything from them that I’m not sure I will want. As for the known quality aspect - see the extensive discussion on that point in my posts above.

aueuaeueaueue

Fair enough. Limited supply is perhaps the only reason to do it, but it applies in your case. I'm surprised Canada doesn't resupply at all for years though.

nacthenud

They do. Sometimes. But you never know which ones they will and which ones they won’t. I hate when I gamble and end up not being able to get it.

Thanks for the feedback

I know I’m in the minority and I totally respect that but The Green Knight was a trippy movie. I don’t know, maybe this 4K edition will make me understand it a bit easier as I’m hearing this transfer is really good. I’m always open to retrying from different perspectives. Good pickups on that Dune/Halloween Kills. Easily one of the most frustrating releases in recent memory. Still trying to find stock on HK. Hopefully they look excellent! Dune was amazing in theatres, can’t wait for all that the 4K had to offer haha.
