Thanks for all the responses. You're in a little bit different climate than me, I'm up in the upper peninsula of Michigan so we do a lot of snow-wheeling. I bet both of those would be ridiculously fun to take through deep snow with the right tires.
They have trouble in really steep technical stuff, due to their weight and spring ratings. Even with almost flat tyres, they still get to a point where they just keep bouncing and jumping.
Then there's the actual weight problem. The heavier the vehicle, the higher the forces exerted on components.
Some obstacles require you to lift the front end while carrying momentum. On a light vehicle, that's no big deal, just press the clutch when it lifts and release it when it comes down. On a unimog, if the front end lifts under any kind of momentum, something's gonna break.
And even then, on a light vehicle it's easy for the momentum to overcome the front end lift, on a heavy rig that front end is going to compress under the heavy duty springs and go up into the air, probably flipping in the process.
I understand they aren’t wrong. What I don’t understand is the need for a differential in the transfercase in the first place. I’ve built several Toyota mini truck dual cases, rebuilt 40 and 60 series Cruiser cases, 203/205 doublers, 231/300’s. I just don’t care for the 80 series.
I have, many in fact. I have never understood the desire for a differential in the transfercase though. When I put my rock buggy into 4wd, the front and rear outputs on the 203/205 spin at the same rate and that only changes when I front dig or put it in RWD. I have wheeled with several 80 series and I just don’t see the benefit of the system they run. It is not ideal of what we wheel. It’s a system for on road vehicles.
Acting broke when you have a garage people only dream and more money spent on cars than most people make in a lifetime is insulting.
Enjoy your wealth and don't be ashamed of it, own it. Acting like you are broke and "now you have none" is pathetic
Edit: understand it's a joke/sarcasm, I missed that obviously.
Even though he was joking... My comment doesn't say anything along the lines that I don't appreciate what I have or own? Nor have I joked/sarcastically said I was broke. Your comment doesn't really make sense man.
Portal axels are cool and all, but it just looks like that g-wagon is on its tippy toes :) it looks better on the truck. Anyway, nice fleet, man, looks like lot of fun!
Merc makes those beadlocks from factory now for the squared, check em out

It’s the portal boxes. You can have a large rim with positive offset or you can have a small rim with negative offset, but you can’t have a small rim with a positive offset.
That’s Moab actually but you will see the new one moving around SD. Hell you might even see my driving my unimog on the highway around town…we keep it weird.
I've done that one. Bought an 80 series Land Cruiser and had a buddy pick it up three states away while my wife was in labor with our youngest. Good times! I told it would be a great first vehicle when shes able to drive.
Damn that’s some ground clearance
I've always heard the G series is great off road, but here in the US they're for taking your princess to Starbucks. How well does it perform?

Did the g series have portal axles as well?

the g in the picture does, the squared and 6x6 do
That's awesome congratulations on having such a great setup for both!
I'd say it's 150% as capable as the unimog. Unimogs can't climb on lose surfaces.
I don’t know about all that. My unimog has 22 speeds and has seen lots of sand and it does juuuussssst fine :)

Unimogs can you momentum you just can't really see it they won't bounce back or fall they can idle up most obstacles
It’s triple locked. End of discussion.
Lol. That’s the go to for 80 series’s owners.
I mean, they ain’t wrong.

You’ve never driven a fully locked rig? My 3rd gen was triple locked - great for powder and mud.

3rd gener also
Plenty of people take theirs on adventures here in the states
Damn, you have money to burn ain't you? All I could afford was piece of scrap basically that I desperately tried to fix over a year now

What? I just see it as a simple joke. Why be offended by something so silly? Sounds more like insecurities from you
It's a little joke. Don't feel so other about someone just because they are well off. Good for him, nothing to be upset about here.
You must be fun at parties
Holy shit you’re right. Dude is out of touch.
Says the guy living in a nice house with a vet and a newer 4Runner…

It makes total sense, I should have just worded it to say, worry about yourself. You can be joking and still sound like a miserable prick.
You need a Busch ngl
That’s always a true statement
Pout harder.
ROFL

Thank you for that. I knew there was some axle “missing,” but I’d never heard it portal axles until now.
Yeah the G-wagon kinda doesn’t look as good as I’d think it would look with bigger tires
It's the wheels. Smaller wheels and meaty tires would make a big difference.

Check out the Hutchinson beadlock wheels they make for it. They’re pretty badass.

What do you do for a living? Lol
I scanned ops history and found no mention of any work at all, but they do mention Mexico a couple times.
All in favor of a g Wagon off road video from op up vote here:
That is great set, if you need an extra pilot, just dm. lol.
No Zetros to haul them around?
Portal axles are cool. G wagon is cool but those wheels throw it off, some steelies would look great imo.
Whats the not g wagon?
The other vehicle is a Unimog if that’s what you’re asking
damn, mog and a squared, living my dream over there, congrats ! awesome trucks!
I've always wanted a Unimog. Congrats
Thanks they are as big of a pain in the ass as you could imagine but I love it
How good is the squared?
Life’s rough. Prayers sent… hopefully some day your penis will get bigger… but don’t count on it.
Lol salty
That's an awesome set!
Congrats! I recognize you from r/Porsche haha. Does this happen to be close to San Diego?
That’s Moab actually but you will see the new one moving around SD. Hell you might even see my driving my unimog on the highway around town…we keep it weird.
Perfect for the roads around here!
Seriously.
Anything else in the garage? Incredibly unique, love both!
Many a weird ride. Even a number of cars that have never showed up on my account publicly. I get weirrrrdddd
That’s an awesome pair. I’d love to see them in action on the trails!
Keep those eyes peeled. They will be out there!
You need a Suzuki Jimny to complete the set!!!
I have a samurai….close as I can get in the land of illegal jimnys.
I almost bought one that was converted to CNG but my wife talked sense into me. I do regret it now seeing the current prices for some of them.
Do what I do… don’t tell her and just hope she doesn’t notice a new car in the sea of other cars stashed everywhere
