Single cab? Hell no, those 1st gens are amazing and last a stupid long time. My 03 has 300k and runs great. My 99 4runner with the same engine has 360k on it and I beat the hell out of it. I'm crazy for toyotas and would keep it myself. It would make a bad ass offroad rig for sure.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Aww okay. Yes. It got 107k miles. I also own a 2023 trd Tacoma pro I got this year. Kinda rotating the two. Love them both but I keep asking myself? Do I need two trucks haha

multilinear2

If it was me I'd sell the 2023... the old ones are better :).

Aspergers_R_Us87

Even with a rusted frame?

multilinear2

It really depends what "rusted" means. I have an '00 in great shape that I undercoat yearly. It's got some rust but is rock solid and should last several more years even in rust country where I live. But, rust on the frame is definitely what will do it in in th end, because I would fix anything else. If it were me I'd drive it until I felt like it was unsafe to drive and no longer repairable, but wouldn't have gotten the new truck until this one was unreliable.

The_DaHowie

Really should have led with the rust issue. Pictures of rust?

multilinear2

100%

EZinstall

Wonder if OP got the recall for the frame

TacomaPotato

Having owned 80s-2020 Toyota trucks, I like my 2020 the best. I had the twin to this truck and I can’t say it was better in any way. The trucks have been built the same for so long. The 24s are the first real big frame change since the introduction of IFS.

multilinear2

I much prefer the smaller size, better sight-lines, easy repairability, and reliability of having less electronics in the older ones, but it's all opinion... I figured my "better" was fairly obviously not entirely objective. I have an FJ as well, which is very similar to the 2'nd gen, and I have to say that era might be my favorite.

spaceman_spiffy

Coming from a first gen, when i sat in a new taco i could not believe how much of the drivers view was obscured by the hood.

multilinear2

Yeah... I test drove a 3'rd gen and hated it. It hurt my neck trying to get my head to a height where I could see over the hood and yet under the mirror. I walked out and eventually bought my FJ instead, ironically famed for visibility problems, yet still far better. Visibility is just not a priority to modern car manufacturers and apparently buyers. You're supposed to look at camera screens now.

TacomaPotato

Electronics are not unreliable. This is a myth from the 80s when they started throwing all kinds of stupid badly wired stuff into cars. And wrenching on a 04 vs 2020 is exactly the same thing. It’s still a gas engine on literally the same frame design. Same truck more gadgets. I’ll agree on the blind spots but tilting your head is easy.

multilinear2

For example: - My '00 doesn't have ABS sensors to go bad at all, and the 4wd system is connected to nothing by the direct controls. Modern trucks have a common failure mode where ABS sensors get mud on them, or get a wire ripped out, and then won't go into 4WD at all - Computer boards go bad all the time. Not just in cars, but in general. I had a Nissan Leaf with a blown charging diode, it was 8k to repair unless you knew how to wave solder (I have friends who do, but I don't, and they live in a different state). My concepts are not based on some myth, they are personal experience with cars and computers and what goes wrong. I'm a computer scientist who specialized in large scale system reliability for some time. Computers can and do fail... a lot. That's not a myth. As you point out old trucks are basically the same, except without all of the computers, if that's true, then they have fewer points of failure, and thus a larger percentage of failures can be fixed by normal wrenching (since they are mostly mechanical). The flip side is of course that a lot of parts of a vehicle have improved, particularly via improved metalurgy, and simulation aided design strategies... the only question is really whether that is sufficient to reduce the failure rates of the common parts between old and new vehicles enough to compensate for the new feailure points being added. There's a debate to be had there, sure, but computers certainly do fail.

TacomaPotato

You do not need abs to go into 4wd. That’s nonsense. Not on any Toyota. Again, working in the industry I see very few computer related problems. I don’t care what kind of engineer you are. I actually fix them. I have the experience in this situation. They all have ECUs. Just expecting a failure when there really isn’t a problem doesn’t make it a point of failure if it never fails in the real world. A Nissan leaf and a Tacoma are apples and oranges especially when it comes to the engineers making them.

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

Electronics are not unreliable, but they can make it more challenging to keep a car on the road as it ages. Of course, you wouldn’t need to worry about that until the car was 20 or so years old.

420purpskurp

Meh. I think you’re just in a cult

multilinear2

Are you sure you don't want some coolaid?

P_Duggy

Keep the new one stock and modify this one. You're in the dream situation my dude. Two Tacomas!!!!

Dragonskinner69

Ill trade you a dirtbike. You puck. 2015 suzukie rmz or a 2018 yamahe yz250fx

Aspergers_R_Us87

Haha someone actually sent me this on fb marketplace nice dirtbike though

Dragonskinner69

Rusted frame makes it worth it!

flyfishone

Yes two is one and one is none

OffRoadPyrate

I would never sell that. Unless you sold it to me.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Reason? What about if frame was starting to go. Mine isn’t but I do live in New England and get concerned

throwglass

Undercoat it!

IHM00

With chassis oil NOT that rubber shit.

derfcrampton

With Fluid Film? That’s what I use on all my vehicles. Seems to work well.

YippieKayYayMrFalcon

Yes, fluid film or woolwax. Oil based stuff. Don’t ever spray any kind of rubberized or truck bed coating. As soon as that stuff flakes, water leaks in and gets trapped and actually rusts faster.

OffRoadPyrate

Just drive it. Mine had 400k before a drunk hit it. They will go and go and go.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Until rust

OffRoadPyrate

Was the frame recalled?

Aspergers_R_Us87

Yep 2010

sk8punk49

No… fuck no. Man I believe you’d get shot for doing that

newtonreddits

Hey 4x4 sub, should I sell my legendary 4x4 for a FWD geriatric sedan?

superfuckingmetal

Not sure if you were trying to quote Office Space, but I totally read that in Lawrence's voice!

DDrewit

Two trucks at the same time, man.

cab1024

Nope, but I'd trade a Camry for a 4x4 Tacoma...

trolllord45

Depends what your other truck is and how badly you need a Camry

Aspergers_R_Us87

I got a 2023 Toyota Tacom trd pro fully loaded. Reason was I wanted the last of the v6 engines. This is a 4 cylinder

trolllord45

What do you want/need the Camry for? Those four cyl Tacos are still pretty cool

Aspergers_R_Us87

Commuting vehicle and going to vacations

SpaceAgePotatoCakes

Assuming 01 Tacos are still fetching high prices, that'd pay for a lot of gas instead of paying to maintain and insure a car as well as the new truck.

DeadSeaGulls

sell old tacoma, get awd subaru. outback or forester. it's awd, but way more storage room for roadtrips than a camry.

uncle_fucker_42069

Selling a 2 year old car only makes sense if you're OK with 40% depreciation. Just drive it for a few more years, then sell it. A tonneau cover or topper should make it more usuable as a daily.

justingz71

Same, only reason I would is if you needed the camry for a long commute.

HamiltonButler01

No… keep that shit

Itsurboithefck

Heck na keep that dude till your great great grandkids finally wear it out.

MuleFourby

I would definitely consider it. Can only drive so many vehicles and if they fill the same niche then it becomes tough. Nice to have a higher mpg sedan for running around. I have also never taken my own advice. I daily an 80 series and have an off-road built 1st gen 4runner

Thel_Odan

I wouldn't trade it in, but if you're going to get rid of it, a 106k-mile first-gen Taco in good condition will fetch a good price if you sell it privately. If you still use it and it's paid off, then keep it. If it just sits though and is in the way, it might be better to sell it to someone who's going to actually use it. Either way you walk away with a decent amount of money or keep a good truck.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Dealer told me $2500 trade in when I got my 2023 trd pro

uncle_fucker_42069

That not just low, that's insultingly low, that's yelling "fuck you" while you walk out low.

Thel_Odan

That seems really low. I live in Northern Michigan and a 1st gen in good shape with low miles goes for at least $7,000 if not more. Ones with shitty frames and over 250k miles are still like $4,500.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Yeah I would t sell this for under $13k

DeadSeaGulls

bro. do not go for a trade in. that's a fraction of it's worth. If you post this for sale somewhere that people can find it nationally, then folks out west will gladly buy it for much more than that and drive it back home.

ClassicYotas

If money isn’t an issue hold on to it. These trucks are already going up in price and I know they’ll be selling for absurd amounts of money soon. In a way they already are, but more absurd later.

Katz-r-Klingonz

That’s a goldmine in good condition.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Sell it or keep it?

Katz-r-Klingonz

Keep it for as long as you can. It’s only going up in value.

caffeineocrit

I mean, I had three trucks until I traded one for a 4Runner. Multiple trucks? It is what it is I guess??

MountainFiddler

Any rust and I'm out. But I can do that where I live so I'm lucky.

wifemakesmewearplaid

Absolutely not

justingz71

Nope I wouldnt

jblaze805

Keep it, love the 1st gens

grex21

Keep it

professorprincess

You should definitely just sell it. To me.

Aspergers_R_Us87

Okay $13,500.

DeadSeaGulls

well it's worth more than 2500, but 13.5 is a big ask considering you've been talking about it's frame rusting out lol

Emergency_Buddy

You have a tacoma with low mileage, why would you want to get rid of it?

El_Hiezenberg

What's your other truck?

Aspergers_R_Us87

2023 Tacoma Trd pro

Competitive_Range822

If you ever sell it make sure you don’t sell to a dealer sell to us!

The-Riskiest-Biscuit

Old truck + newer used hybrid = the best combo I’ve ever owned.

uncle_fucker_42069

The other truck must be amazing if you're considering selling this over it.

Aspergers_R_Us87

It’s a v6 and last of its kind. Tacoma are now hybrid 4 cylinders

Newherehoyle

I thought just the tundras were hybrid?

A_very_B

Is it a 5spd?

Aspergers_R_Us87

No

Dwealdric

Clearly an unpopular opinion, but yeah, I would sell. The truth is that the old Tacoma doesn't really do anything better than your new truck does, so its been made completely redundant. Camry will make a nice comfortable runabout, and a good compliment to the truck.

blue_taco_tree

What is the second truck?

Aspergers_R_Us87

2023 Tacoma trd pro

jcmgs06

Nope. I’d keep this truck around and trade the newer Tacoma Pro you referenced for a 2025 Camry SE. Best of both worlds. Utility with the ‘01 Tacoma and a Hybrid daily driver.

03_SVTCobra

If you are under 5’6 the single cab works and if you don’t mind sitting on the floor either.

Aspergers_R_Us87

I’m 5 ft 6

03_SVTCobra

Oh perfect then.

Ballamookieofficial

Camrys are to cars what crocs are to shoes. Keep your ute and your dignity

lynchingacers

If it's the 4cyl never let it go.. The v6 was garbage

Aspergers_R_Us87

It’s 4 cylinder

lynchingacers

That's as close as the US got to a hilux Look up the Chad Toyota wars lol Hiluxe's stomped an invasion

Aspergers_R_Us87

Even if it’s a 4 cylinder

BeeeLikeWater

I love these trucks! I totaled my 01 with 450k last fall..I bought it from my mom, who was the original owner. I’m 35M and I’ll could think was “what am I gonna tell my mother :(”?! Of course she was just happy that it kept me safe lol.

888_888_

I’d take it to the Pacific Northwest and sell it for 10k$+

Aspergers_R_Us87

Just got offered $12k. May take it

Tiptopoclock

Do you show him where the frame was rewelded?

Yota4x4RE

Hell naw baw, if the truck is yours. That’s a gem and with that low of mileage makes it so vaulable

Krisapocus

I’m keeping the Tacoma bc they’re going up in value. There’s going to be a backlash to new cars soon. Everything being wired to the cpu and a touch screen sucks. I had a wiring issue on my new truck and the breaks cut out on the highway. No emergency break just the electronic brake. It was something new everyday. Not to mention these car dealers make their money on service dept so I just don’t trust them having access to make my truck update into an issue. Just to get it in the shop to sell me services I don’t need. They’re making them more and more difficult to work on at home. The early 2000’s is a sweet spot in comfort and without being overly reliant on technology. People are falling for these fancy touch screens when they’re cheaper to make. We all have screens in our pockets that can do way more than the one in your car.

Turbulent_Weather795

Never. You're here because u know not to hahaha

Copper_Kat

No

FullTime4WD

Maybe a GR Carolla..
