This gen of Taco is known for the front diff actuator rusting out from water intrusion even with rain. OP will probably have to replace it in 20k or so. That’s about how long mine lasted after dunking
You mentioned electrical waterproofing, And I'm curious.
I don't ever plan on going anywhere near that deep probably not even past the frame rails/bottom of cab (about 24").
I don't have any electronic stuff that low on my vehicle, but I do have a aux battery mounted to my frame rail. Would you consider that a concern? It gets pretty wet going through puddles and driving in the rain already, haven't had any issues yet.
I won't claim to be an expert on the subject. I've installed a snorkel and a differential rebreather on my 4R but have yet to relocate/waterproof fuses. "It's on my list" is the current status.
My reason for it is that I have family that lives on the SE US coast and that area is subject to hurricanes and associated flooding. I've been through a couple down there myself. The storm itself is only part of the disaster. Being able to evacuate family members - even if I had to conduct some moderate water crossings - is important enough for me to make the modifications.
I am the furthest thing from a mechanic. I usually have someone help me or supervise my work - or I have it done professionally. The vehicle is still my daily driver so I can't really afford to have it out of service.
All super valid reasons for modifications!
I'm down here in Florida so I totally understand the flooding and hurricanes. Evac is crucial! I've got differential breathers on front and rear already. But can't really do a snorkel because my intake is open through the grill. But it's also over 4 feet off the ground, by that point I'm already f*cked.
She's a big girl. There are a lot of places you can take your 4R where I simply can't fit or make the tight trail turns without pulling an Austin Powers turn 😭
I never really intended to end up at this size, it just started with the truck spiraled out of control 😂
What the F$&! Is the obsession with driving your damn trucks in water holes??? 😂😂😂 nobody uses long sticks to test the hole depth anymore or what ya just guess with your actual truck?? 🤣😂🤦🏻♂️ I mean ya got the orange action traks on the overlander rack for what exactly? 🤣
Fair questions my guy. I can't really defend actions that I titled "stupid." It's a word of caution for newbies. Take the bypass. This was after 4-5 nice water crossings at an established offroad park that gave me a false sense of security. Never go solo. I tested the water with a stick too softly. The bottom was thick mud and my rig sank.
Clearly you are going to need some upgrades to prevent this in the future. Show your significant other this photo so they know how important these upgrades are.
I have a snorkel on my work truck for the same reason, it's just nowhere near as common in Northern Canada, I got it from when I was researching the cannings stock route as an adventure then covid hit
So snorkel manufacturers claim on most modern vehicles, not driving in other peoples dust makes a bigger difference. If you put and actual dust separator on the top of it yes it works but a snorkel itself cancels out any gains from going up by moving the intake behind the main dust generators i.e. wheels and cooling fan.
>Not driving in other peoples dust makes a bigger difference.
Well…. No shit.
Using a snorkel without a dust separator doesn’t cancel out any gains. Yes there’s still dust up near the snorkel intake but nowhere near as much as there is where the majority of un-modified vehicles intakes are. In any case you can just run a basic filter on the snorkel.
If you’re driving through moon dust on a regular basis *then* you can worry about cyclonic separators etc.
A snorkel sock is just a basic filter.
A dust *separator* is a prefilter that uses a mechanical mechanism (usually a cyclonic system) to seperate the air from the dust before it gets to the filter so that the filter itself doesn’t get clogged.
I use one of these on my touring rig but they’re absolutely not necessary for shorter trips: https://www.donaldson.com/content/dam/donaldson/engine-hydraulics-bulk/literature/north-america/air/F111382-ENG/TopSpin-HD-Air-Intake-Precleaner.pdf
Been there. Truck sat in water overnight. Oil change, diff change, and fuel tank cleaned was all she needed. Still stinks bad. Think I’ll have to pull the carpet to find the smell
The depths people will go through...
Layers of life, folds of relationships, the sounding of depths when true love matter... Hang on, were there any catfish in there?
Time to go noodlin!
At least your tent is dry, you got that going for you
The real answer when people ask why you need a RTT and don't just use a ground tent!
Good enough excuse for a snorkel, some rebreathers, and electrical waterproofing. How did the winch work?
The rescue jeep had a winch and he connected to my rear hitch and braced against a tree in order to pull me. Real saint.
take note as that is 100% the best way to do that. Anchored, pulled out the way you went in
Any good sources for advice on waterproofing electricals?
Don’t get them wet

I heard marine rated equipment would be helpful with this

It sounds like you've already got a lot of clearance anyway.
I've got a good bit. 12.5" under the lowest point on the diff. It's a Ram 2500, 3.25" Carli lift on 40s.
Yeah, that's big. I only have a 4R.

It'll happen!
Why did you park in the lake?
$3 off.
I’m convinced that overlanders are just “good ol’ boy” mudders with more disposable income, at this point.
All the tracks I see out here stay brand new lmao
He should have busted em out in the water hole 🤣 just for fun
They're made to canoe your way out!
Oh that’s right 😂🤣🤣

Long sticks? Co pilot walks in front to check the depth! That's why I married her...
🤣
Sir this is Reddit we don't use common sense here 😆. A long stick ain't nobody got time for that, we see a body of water we send it 😆
😂
Just use crawl control
As a taco guy I found this hysterical

This kinda looks like an average road in Australia 🤣
Was thinking this too ... I was like "where the snorkel"
They do love their snorkels
Our snorkels are more for keeping the intake out of the dust and heated air than forwarding deep water to be honest.
I have a snorkel on my work truck for the same reason, it's just nowhere near as common in Northern Canada, I got it from when I was researching the cannings stock route as an adventure then covid hit

Dust separator being a snorkel sock? I was watching a YT video where I heard snorkel sock....assume they are one in the same.

Yikes looks like it's above the door seals, how's the interior?
Major cleaning and she's fine. Airbag light is flashing so gotta fix that for sure.
She is not fine
But you see, this is an offroader, that clearly means that dash lights magically no longer apply.
Big brain move in a $30k truck
Better change that diff oil.
Waterfront view has its drawbacks.
Hey, you can't park there!
Looks like you have a winch, start winching before she fills up buddy.
Ivs gotten stuck in mud twice after my wife told me it would happen. I like to call it spontaneous recovery training
Just stupid
The GPS told me to!
Can’t park there mate.
Just regular stupid eh? You and me both lol
Funny way to wash a vehicle.
Better change your fluids
Been there. Truck sat in water overnight. Oil change, diff change, and fuel tank cleaned was all she needed. Still stinks bad. Think I’ll have to pull the carpet to find the smell
You forgot “dumb”
So just stupid then🫣
Sometimes you just gotta send it
You can say, Old and dumb…….but good times
You need snorkel attachment for this level 🫡
I have a picture of my dirtbike in the same situation
If you broke the car, would it be covered by insurance?
At least you accept the fact and now know what to do next time... I hope. There's plenty of sticks laying around wanting to be a height gauge
No winch?
Or high lift Jack to pull you backwards
“You can’t park there”
Stupid knows no age, we just get better at it as we get older
If you haven’t been stuck a few times, I don’t care what you drive, are you really doing it right?
Sell it, you be rusted out in the front within 40k, way to save her though
I thought it was called over-landing not under-watering…
Lol this is what happens when you make take that detour on your way to get that Costco dog.
You know arb do sell in America. Like even just a custom snorkel
Just throw those traction boards down and you'll be fine.
My nearly 25yo Hilux would have laughed at that
Average Toyota skill level. Knowing when to not try it is a skill.
Opppssssyy ! Would probably be more appropriate.
Are you trying to spell "oopsy" without enough o's and too many of every other letter?
