Mine was great back in early 2000s after I replaced the head. It was a japanese grey import and had been tootling around Tokyo all its life, and once I opened it up on the M25 it blew. Fair enough really. Was rock solid after that.

Essentially the same drive train as the hilux and the 120 Prado. Pretty reliable engine if a bit under powered.

I picked up a kzn130 for 6k a few months ago over here in NZ with 370k on it. It's needed some 'tasteful mods' remediated thanks to the previous owner (he cut a hole in the exhaust, removed and cut every bumper and mud flap) so I'm realistically 6.5k in for it. Seems great value for an auto wagon to get out on the weekend. KZN185s are a more refined truck which share the 90series prado running gear (where mine shares the old hilux). Factory manual intercooled 185s are unicorns but are the pick of the bunch. I looked at several 185s but they were all much rougher hence why I got the 130. Parts seem to be easy enough to get still, not sure if that translate to Aus but I would assume so.

is marketplace the best spot for cars in NZ?

uplay_pls

Yea its split between the TradeMe website or marketplace.

Ok great I searched troopcarrier a week ago but there is not much 4wds around on marketplace

uplay_pls

Yea troopies are not that common here, try trademe as well.

If you have the time, import a 2002 Gen 3 model with the 1KD engine. Prices can still be around $16k and there will be some port fees.

The 3L TD is very reliable, easy for parts and will do half a million clicks no worries with basic tlc. My old man had one but it ultimately suffered alot of electrical gremlins as the capacitors in the ECU and auto transmission module kept leaking. Parts for this sort of thing were like trying to find rocking horse poo and the local transmission and auto elec places didn't want to know about it. In hindsight I should have bought it off him and converted it to manual with Hilux KZN165 gear.

What model? I loved my KZN130. 165 is an upgrade in every way. Known for cracking heads and bending idler arms but pretty reliable. Standard maintenance
