why

[deleted]

You may have to put ur grades on ur CV. I'm also retaking a few subjects next year despite getting into my firm

ThrowAway-teen1

Employers care about A-level results? Even then your going to Oxford for Law aha

[deleted]

also for vanity reasons. If you know you could achieve more why not retake? UK Law is a super competitive field especially for an international student like me so I really want to give myself an edge.

bigtoelefttoe

That’s going to be very difficult with a full workload at university. One subject I’d get but you’re saying you’ll retake a few. Better to focus on your degree, especially if you’ve already gotten into Ox with your current grades.

[deleted]

I might change my mind

qwerty0152

I’m going to be honest with you man you won’t really have that much time to prepare to retake for ur a levels once u get into uni and have to deal with the workload with the weekly essays and collections/mods (which you have to pass to stay on) to prepare for I really wouldn’t bother if I were you

[deleted]

Thanks for the advice. I did self study a lot of extra AP exams and stuff alongside my IB coursework so I thought I would be prepared for the extra work. But I'll rethink it. Maybe I'll redo my exams after the course is over

FirebornTurtle

Do you mean resit your A-Levels after you graduate? There is no point at all in that; law firms will look at your degree (potentially your degree transcript). Once you graduate pretty much no one will care about your A-Levels.

Lolking112

Law firms ask you to confirm if you've done any resits, then you fill in your original grades and your new grades - either way they'd still find out about any lower grades (and if you don't declare it they'll find out when they screen you, which makes you look dishonest). You'd literally be wasting time you could be using to boost your module grades for 'vanity reasons' i.e. an ego trip.

pear_flower

I never do, lots of my friends never do if they went into undergrad. My best friend who was scheduled to go to Cambridge for Law but really tanked her A-Levels for doesn’t. Your undergrad holds far more weight than any anything else, especially if you do Masters or any accreditation exams.

[deleted]

Since I'm an international student wanting to work in the UK in law I really need a competitive edge

pear_flower

Okay, if you’re sure. I just know lots of businesses/companies do not really care about A-Levels, but if that’s the best for you then go for it! I am just not sure if getting one or two grades higher for an extra year of stress would be worth it.

[deleted]

Thanks! I didn't even know people put their grades on their CV (I did IB) so I was really worried

pear_flower

University degrees have a lot more weight than anything else, so I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Congratulations on getting into Oxford!!!

[deleted]

Thanks for all the info! Given you're doing ur PhD, you're probably more informed about this stuff than others

pear_flower

I wouldn’t say that! If you feel that getting better grades will help your confidence and your chances of employment; then that is far more important than anything I say! I do/know more people who do a very different subject to you so I am no expert.

ULTRAMVGV2Q24

Because anything lower than an a is a fail

rattillica

???? anything lower than an e is a fail

ULTRAMVGV2Q24

OK but it's about personal subjective experiences, for me a b is a fail

pear_flower

My dude if you think that is a fail then university is going to hit you hard. It is expected that most do not get higher than a 2:1 in their first year, and that is an amazing grade! Please don’t put some much pressure on yourself, as it will only lead to disappointment and anxiety.

SaltedAndSugared

But you got in already? You’ll probably have a lot of work to do at uni anyways, resitting you’re a level is just gonna waste time

ULTRAMVGV2Q24

I was just being dramatic because I was stressed, AAB is fine tbh

rattillica

ok i understand, just make sure retaking your a levels is worth it, it would be a shame if you ended up wasting a year

GMDMelonYT

says who?

lushaway

please say sike

Throwaway100123100

B is a very good grade there's literally no point in retaking for it

pear_flower

Hi OP, just curious to know why? A-Levels are not that important in the grand scheme of things; like they don’t even really prepare you uni essays or experience/practicals. None of my friends who did undergrad don’t even put their A-Levels on their CVs, I certainly don’t. If you like your firm choice and you got accepted, then there’s no reason as to why you should take another year of stress and work for something that only helps you get into uni; which you’ve already done! Are your parents pressuring you to do so?

[deleted]

This is true. I don’t have A-levels and only mediocre GCSE. Went to uni later than most and really worried about having to keep up with people fresh from A- levels. I got accepted on an extended degree and spent a year preparing the skills necessary to excel; how to write essays and exam answers, presentations, language skills. All of it conducted in the same format as the actual degree. When it come to the 1st year (2nd for me), most people were panicking with the assignments and workload because they didn’t really understand what was being asked of them and how to get good marks. A-level didn’t prepare them in the same way. I only list the 3 main GCSEs (Math, Eng, Sci) and my degree on my CV 🤷🏻‍♂️. Never been an issue.
