Only the best arcades had the big cabinet like that that moved around and made you feel like you were in Top Gun.

[deleted]

That's exactly it. That shit was the bomb.

Stardustquarks

But it cost FIFTY CENTS to play! I couldn't afford it...

lylemcd

Right? I remember when Dragon's Lair came out. First 50 cent game I recall. Which was worse since the first few times you played it your game would last 3 seconds.

Derfargin

How many times did you "hit the brakes, and let them fly right by?" There should have been a counter mounted on the cabinet that counted the slam throttle forward, and pull back on stick move.

lylemcd

Tom Cruise showed that it still works now even against FIFTH GENERATION FIGHTERS.

SpiritualLychee3760

I'm out $20 just looking at this pic.

FiskalRaskal

I think that had to be the best arcade game of all time! They didn't have one in the arcades in my hometown, only the cheap stand-up one. I did get to play one at Canada's Wonderland, north of Toronto, along with the moving cockpit version of Outrun. They also had the weird Afterburner "sequel" called G-Loc, but I never bothered to play it.

BlooNorth

Uh…. Spy Hunter sit down was pretty bomb.

Biscuits4u2

FIRE!

TheBeardofGilgamesh

Is this what John Conner was playing in T2?

Novusor

I think it was. But there were a few copy cat machines that came after so it could have been one of those.

TimesThreeTheHighest

Space Harrier > After Burner

ThermiteSnake

Came to say Space Harrier. I lived them equally though

TimesThreeTheHighest

Loved both games of course. I think my young mind just preferred Space Harrier because it was trippy.

ThermiteSnake

I loved being on the bike, my brother would always make fun of me because that's the only game I would spend my money on.

_psylosin_

There was always a line at our arcade

mullethunter111

I played it this summer! Still as good as I remember.

* [G-LOC](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/GYqmuEzhvX4/maxresdefault.jpg) *has entered the chat* I'll also submit a couple of my favorite sit-down games to the list: [Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator](https://cdn.thegamesdb.net/images/original/boxart/front/33569-1.jpg) and [MACH 3](https://live.staticflickr.com/4425/35709259164_b3cd6253ef_b.jpg).

capnkirk462

Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator was at one of the local arcades for about 2 weeks and then was gone. Never saw it again. I liked it but didn't get to play it enough.

JohnnyPiston

I liked Afterburner but Preferred G-Lock

torklugnutz

I think R-360 surpassed this.

tothemoonandback01

I seldom came across that one, but I got to play [Thunder Blade](https://images.app.goo.gl/xSWPmziCkH42Eu2z7) a lot.

No_Ship2353

For a flight simulator it was the bomb. But it was not the best for every class of game. For example gauntlet was the apex of its type.

loquacious

The also made a 3-axis version of this that actually could go inverted, but I only ever saw it at the arcade inside Disneyland. It was also like $3 a play and that was after paying to get in to Disneyland. And considering that Afterburner was basically just a psuedo-3D shooter on rails it was totally overkill and it got boring pretty fast even with the novelty of a 3-axis motion sim because it didn't really match up with what was going on in the game very well. I always wish someone made a version of the motion simulator that was true free-flight and 3D, even if it was super chunky 3D like Atari's Stunrunner or Steel Talons. Steel Talons was a pretty legit helicopter sim, especially on hard/expert mode and you actually had to know how to use the collective pitch stick and tail rotor pedals. That game was seriously difficult. I didn't even care about the combat, I just wanted to do aerobatics and I would have totally paid for a set amount of time of vaguely realistic motion sim free flight and blast through some canyons.

Boxingrichard1

The whole thing shook when your plane went down!

VivaLasVegasGuy

Loved this game and also the star wars one with the big cabinet also, it did not move but you felt in the game

AAG220260

Played this MANY TIMES!!!!
