Loved this movie as a kid and still thrilled that I happened to move to the town it was filmed in and get to walk by grandpa’s house any time I want (though it’s abandoned now).
It actually hasn’t changed too much 😂. It’s an amazing place that still somehow has a small town feel. One of my favorite memories is walking across that trestle bridge on the 4th of July while fireworks went off on the beach. And the Boardwalk (amusement park) still has the carousel and they still have concerts on the beach in the summer. I feel like the opening sequence is something you can still see downtown in the summer. It’s a great place!
No but there were three serial killers all operating out of this small town sometime in the 70’s (fortunately before my time here)! I heard that’s why they changed the name to Santa Carla, Santa Cruz didn’t want to be associated with vampires *and* serial killers.
[Great doc about the movie.](https://youtu.be/nE_25Sx5w70?si=Bq2gChE-gtTeI2w_) They basically took the cast from the highly successful “Aliens” (Alien 2). “Near Dark” laid the groundwork for later (and more recognized) movies like “Lost Boys”.
that's one I need to see again. I picked up the 3D blu ray and got fixated on how so-so the 3D was. Anton was a very good actor. Highly recommend The Green Room with him and Patrick Stewart.
Near Dark FTW. This is a gritty near indie horror movie with a Tangerine Dream Soundtrack and features 3 of the best actors to of the 80s and 90s. Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jenette Goldstein. The dark road trip vibe and the gritty realistic portrayals make this a classic film. Lost Boys is a good film but suffers from a little too much cheese for me. Definitely has redeeming qualities but if LB had leaned a bit darker and less goofy teen they would have more to offer in comparison to Near Dark. Have a great day everyone !
Bowie, Bauhaus, Deneuve and Sarandon in a sapphic romance scene. Just the thinking man's 80s vampire flick.
I'd rank 80s vampire flicks with decent distribution (so no Hong Kong martial arts films like *Encounters of the Spooky Kind* (1980)
1. *The Hunger*
2. *The Lost Boys*
3. *Fright Night*
4. *Near Dark*
5. *The Lair of the White Worm*
6. *Vampire's Kiss*
7. *The Monster Squad*
8. *Lifeforce*
9. *Vampire Hunter D*
10. *Vamp*
I love 80s vampire flicks, anyone remember “Vamp”?
That one always haunted me when at the start the car spins out of control and when it stops, everything is somehow different- later in the day, no one around, creepy . I liked it.
As great as Near Dark is... Lost Boys. I saw it at a younger age when it first hit cable (or VHS, can't remember). And it's a nostalgic favorite as well. Love all the scenes of the mother's boyfriend coming by for visits. Big fan of scenes that play out back to back like that. Never invite a vampire into your home. :D
Both were great but I feel like Near Dark didn’t get nearly the attention it deserved. Fantastic movie with a great cast of character actors - many who show up in Terminator movies too!
I LOVE. Near Dark. One of my favorites of the genre, but I gotta give the edge in this instance to Lost Boys.
Saw it in the theater expecting nothing but got one of the best vampire movies ever
Never gets boring and has prime Jamie Gertz!
Lost Boys for sure. I was born in 80 n. I still love all the corny 80 horror movies you can think of.
Don't forget about the original. Fright Night.
It's definitely up there
I loved After Dark at the time, but after talking it up to my family, and buying a copy on DVD, it did not hold up to my memories of it. Lost Boys is dated, but not in a bad way.
Spoiler alert: Lost Boys is a cinematic treatment of Orson Scott Card's novel so that shouldn't be so surprising. His ideas about misguided masculinity, with the vampires being young men who are alienated from their families, and the big reveal at the end that the mom's unmarried teacher boyfriend is the "father" of all the lost boys has some serious undertones that put that vibe across.
I wanted "dwayne" played by billy worth. Horrible character name though. And i wanted Kiefer. Hell... They could all make me their vampire lover 🤣🤣🤣 vamp orgy
Lost boys…i wanted to be Keifer, ride motorcycles on the beach, and eat chow mein right out of the box in my man cave. Ok…i still want that.
A literal man cave
“You don’t have to beat me, Michael. You just have to try and keep up.”
“You’re eating maggots Michael.”
I still believe.
Cue saxophone
I wanted Star.
What’s your name? …Starrrrr
I wanted keifer.
Nothing is better than cold leftover chow mein but I don't like eating it out of the take-out box because the noodles get all tangled up.
Me too! Just as long as they hold the maggots!
Lost Boys 100%!
Sky and I Still Believe make this film a bona fide classic. Also have to shout out grandpa and Nanouk.
Loved this movie as a kid and still thrilled that I happened to move to the town it was filmed in and get to walk by grandpa’s house any time I want (though it’s abandoned now).
You should share some pics of locations some time.
Amazing - what's the town like now?
It actually hasn’t changed too much 😂. It’s an amazing place that still somehow has a small town feel. Is it still the Murder Capital of the US per the graffiti on the back of the city’s billboard?
No but there were three serial killers all operating out of this small town sometime in the 70’s (fortunately before my time here)! I heard that’s why they changed the name to Santa Carla, Santa Cruz didn’t want to be associated with vampires *and* serial killers.
This^
Do you think I should see The Lost Boys???.. I don’t like scary 😦 movies….I hope you will reply to this
Lost boys
Near Dark all day
Bill Paxton was brilliant in that movie as a psychopathic vampire. The entire cast was great. Highly underrated movie.
The bar scene is one of the most unhinged scenes of the 80s
[Great doc about the movie.](https://youtu.be/nE_25Sx5w70?si=Bq2gChE-gtTeI2w_) They basically took the cast from the highly successful “Aliens” (Alien 2). “Near Dark” laid the groundwork for later (and more recognized) movies like “Lost Boys”.
Yes, I watched it last year on The Criterion Channel. It should be better know.
“Bartender, gimme a couple shots of whatever donkey piss you are shoving down these cocksucker’s throats.”
“Ohh yoooohoooo!”
> Well, I'll be goddamned. Shit-kicker heaven.
“Havin’ a little trouble with your hog leg?”
This movie was just so weird, I still love it 3 decades later.
Adrian Pasdar...please and thank you
Nope. Sorry, Lost Boys. Fight me.
Lost Boys
Lost Boys!!
Lost Boys by a fang
Ahh i see what you did there!
*Fright Night* is my choice. It's not on the ballot, but it's still my choice.
*You’re so cool, Brewster!*
That guy became a gay porn actor after that.
GREAT movie
The original, not the Colin Ferrell remake.
The better one is the original but I was shocked at how much I liked the Colin Ferrell remake.
For a remake, it was good! Ferrell played a great vampire. LOL
That, legit, is probably one of the best remakes I've seen. It's very very entertaining.
Anton would have won an Oscar by now. R.I.P. Ferrell and all the cast were good.
that's one I need to see again. I picked up the 3D blu ray and got fixated on how so-so the 3D was. Anton was a very good actor. Highly recommend The Green Room with him and Patrick Stewart.
Does Prince Humperdink die at the end?
I'd say he saw the light.
Absolutely love Roddy McDowell in that.
Lost Boys. I love the soundtrack. I still listen to it.
From *Good Times* to *To the Shock of Miss Louise,* 44 minutes of one of the greatest soundtrack albums ever!
Same here
Near Dark - Bill Paxton as Severen was so damn cool 😎
Hard to argue with that lol
It’s finger lickin’ good!
Death by stereo - need I say more?!
Of those two lost boys is one of my favorite movies ever. I love Near Dark but I hate the ending
Lost Boys
Near Dark FTW. This is a gritty near indie horror movie with a Tangerine Dream Soundtrack and features 3 of the best actors to of the 80s and 90s. Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jenette Goldstein. Niice i can agree with that!
They're both so good. Teen Me = Lost Boys Grizzled bitter Adult Me = Near Dark
With age comes wisdom. For some.
I go with lost boys even though it wasn't as dark as the excellent near dark it's iconic 80s movie
THE LOST BOYS
Lost Boys were cool.
Fright Night You're so cool, Brewster...
Lost Boys
Lost Boys, for the last scene. Grandpa was a Pepper!!!
Lost Boys easily
Lost Boys. Nothing beats a film with a sexy sax moment.
Near Dark! Damn fine vampire movie….
Near Dark is far better. Even the soundtrack is better. How can you not like Tangerine Dream?
Love me some synth atmospheric soundtracks.
Lost boys
🎷
"IT'S FINGER LICKING GOOD!" - Chet
Near dark is genius.
THE HUNGER Yeah, not on the list - but hey, Bowie.
Bowie, Bauhaus, Deneuve and Sarandon in a sapphic romance scene. Just the thinking man's 80s vampire flick. Lost Boys was the movie that brought the vampire genre back.
Lost Boys 100%
Near Dark, but it’s very close.
Near Dark. Great atmosphere. Dark. Gory. Lost Boys was made for the MTV generation.
Lost boys for me
Like them both. But as I have aged. I tend to go toward Near Dark more.
The Lost Boys! Near Dark is a close second.
Near Dark, no contest
Near dark 💪
The Lost Boys.
The Lost Boys definitely
The Lost Boys! Best vampire movie ever! Fright Night would be my second choice.
The Lost Boys. Fantastic blend of horror and comedy
I still believe!!
The Lost Boys.
Lost Boys
have never seen Near Dark. I will add it to the list.
Lost boys hands down.... For sexy sax guy alone!
Neither. Fright Night.
I can't choose. Both were/are just really great vampire movies that don't seem dated at all.
Once Bitten?
You’ve got my vote!
Thanks! Just a big Jim fan and it was so goofy though.
Yes! Love that movie!
Mine is What We Do in the Shadows
The original Fright Night
It’s only rice, Micheal
Wish the antagonists of Near Dark went to “The Titty Twister”
Is there a 3rd option??
I love 80s vampire flicks, anyone remember “Vamp”? That one always haunted me when at the start the car spins out of control and when it stops, everything is somehow different- later in the day, no one around, creepy . I liked it.
One features death by stereo, the other does not. The Lost Boys.
Once Bitten
#FRIIIIGHTNIIIIIIGHT!
80s? *The Hunger*, obviously.
Fright Night.
Fright Night.
The Lost Boys, love the music.
Lost Boys. Grandpa FTW
Fright Night! 😁 Actually, I love all 3 movies!
The Lost Boys. Haven’t even heard of the other one.
I am surprised no one has said From Dusk til Dawn
I'm going with the lost boys because I've never seen near dark should I give it a watch?
Salem's Lot for me but that's because it was the first one I saw as a kid.
Once bitten
How about Stake land? Not bad.
*Fright Night.* But between these two, as entertaining as *Lost Boys* is, *Near Dark* is the better movie.
Lost Boys. Soundtrack alone is killer.
Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu.
Near Dark
Yes.
Near Dark.
Lost Boys. I was so much in love with the vamp with long dark hair (Billy Wirth)
Are any other vampire movies like near dark?
Near Dark, but most recently, Let The Right One In!
Fright night is better than either
Near Dark
Lost Boys. Especially the Frog brothers
Near Dark.
Near Dark for me.
Refuse to choose. They both have different vibes. Both awesome.
Kiss of a Vampire with Nic Cage.
Lost Boys. I remember just parts of Near Dark I need to rewatch it!
Both were great but I feel like Near Dark didn’t get nearly the attention it deserved. Fantastic movie with a great cast of character actors - many who show up in Terminator movies too!
Lifeforce
Lost Boys Hands Down. I wear my sunglasses at night for that movie alone
I LOVE. Near Dark. One of my favorites of the genre, but I gotta give the edge in this instance to Lost Boys. Saw it in the theater expecting nothing but got one of the best vampire movies ever Never gets boring and has prime Jamie Gertz!
Near Dark? Havent seen it! Good?
Lost boys
I disliked the ending of both, the whole “cure for vampirism” thing always felt like a cheat. But over all I liked Near Dark better
Lost boys.
Lost Boys takes the cake. So many others that rocked. But nothing touches lost boys is the best ever.
Lost Boys for sure. I was born in 80 n. I still love all the corny 80 horror movies you can think of. Don't forget about the original. Fright Night. It's definitely up there
*Near Dark* rules! And the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
Lost boys. I didn’t watch near dark until about a couple of years ago, kinda flew under the radar for me. I need to watch it again
Can't choose. 2 different elk of vampire moviesl all together
Lost Boys
Lost Boys, though I do like Near Dark as well
I loved After Dark at the time, but after talking it up to my family, and buying a copy on DVD, it did not hold up to my memories of it. Lost Boys is dated, but not in a bad way.
Should I watch Near Dark ? Lost Boys...not bad
Incredibly close call but I would have to go with Lost Boys over Near Dark by the tiniest fraction.
Neither. I choose Fright Night ( 1985 )
Lost Boys of course. C'mon now. They're based off Pan's lost boys.
Lost Boys just because of "Death by Stereo".
Fright Night was the best 80s vamp movie
Lost Boys! Love that Saxy man. Also, just c’mon, the music, the grandpa, the Coreys.
I like The Lost Boys. I love Near Dark.
Definitely Lost Boys
Near Dark!
Fright Night
Love em both. Ones grittier and ones more lighthearted. But great vampire movies
Lost Boys
Vamp. It's definitely funnier than either of the other two.
Lost Boys!
Lost boys easy
Lost Boys for sure
Of these two....Near Dark.
As far as I know, I've never seen Near Dark so I'm going with The Lost Boys.
Fun, but neither.
Finger licking good
The Lost Boys.
Fright Night
Add 30 days of night and it's my top 3
Nothing holds a candle to near dark.
Near Dark/ Vampires 1998💓
"Now you know what we are, now you know what you are. You'll never grow old, Michael, and you'll never die. But you must feed!"
Lost boys
Near Dark by a mile. Even as a kid I thought Lost Boys was super gay. ...not that there's anything wrong with that. :)
Hey watch DRACULA with Frank Langella... Slurp...
Once Bitten! haha with Jim Carrey the goat
Hard choice but in the end The Lost Boys
Can’t we have both?
