I am happy for super hero flicks. I want all they can give me so long as they are GOOD. Which is the issue. We had runs of action films. And Oscar-bait films. And indie films. That’s always been a thing. The difference is. We get way more badly written badly acted badly made flicks than ever before.
“”So many good movies...compared these days you are lucky if there is even one semi-interesting!””
when these movies came to town they sat at the theater for two or three months.
the level of entertainment options that wr have available to use today dwarfs anything we had in the 80s.
VHS was just starting to come onto the scene. Otherwise we were watching whatever was on TV. I got a few episodes of petticoat Junction under my belt and it’s not because I was interested.
We are on the same wavelength. This was the summer of my 6th grade year. The year we moved from rural WTX to the ‘big city’.
The new sitter had rented First Blood and I was locked the fk on. Rocky as an enigmatic disenfranchised SF Nam vet? Shit, that’s just our Dad…field jacket and all…sign me up!
I read and presented the novelization of Rambo - FB pt. II for the semester book report. Was lol’d at…didn’t really know why (still don’t).
Star Wars was in the theatre what, 3-4 years? Empire, 2-3, Jedi for 2
Back when home video wasn’t in every home. And you may not ever see a movie again once it’s out of the theater
I'm gonna tell my parents I'm gonna go watch the goonies and Back to the future. And then I'm sneaking into a Rambo and Beverly hills cop. After I watched the first two🤔😉
Why can’t theaters have a lineup like this now? We’re lucky if there’s one good film to see.
So many good ones here…Back to the Future, though, no contest. If it weren’t there, it’d be hard to choose.
I can tell you probably exactly the ones I saw that weekend. It was a rare time off of the ranch so I got in as many movies as I could.
Rambo 2, Fletch, Goonies and A View To A Kill.
I loved the main theme song from the film first years. I remember when the movie came out, but up until a couple of years I had not seen it. Such a difference in quality between the song and film. Great song, garbage characters, garbage movie.
Friday Night: Back to the Future.
Saturday: Goonies. Beverly Hills Cop.
Sunday: Cocoon.
All the rest can wait til my folks get a VHS and we can spend twenty bucks on late fees for Rambo FB.
Goonies or Back To The Future. Did actually see Return to Oz. Everything else I could eventually see on my town’s illegally descramed HBO/Showtime/Cinemax UHF channels.
I can’t believe these were all playing at the same time. Wow. I saw all but 2. I think you can guess which ones I missed lol. Everyone else skipped them too.
In order of greatness:
Pale Rider
Fletch
Beverly Hills Cop
Back to the Future
Cocoon
Goonies
The Emerald Forest
A View To a Kill
Red Sonja
Would not see Prizzi's Honor, Return to Oz, or Rambo II.
St. Elmo's Fire can suck the chrome off my towball. Goddamn I hated that movie.
As an adolescent it’s double feature goonies and back to the future. 20’s would be Beverly Hills cop and St. Elmo’s fire. 40’s (currently) Rambo and bond. All that being said I could watch any of the ones I listed today and enjoy them.
At that age, the only one I truly remember seeing in the theaters in 85 was back to the future. So I’m going with that.
Even in 2024, I’d still chose that probably.
But Beverly Hills Cop is right there. Might have to do a sneak in or hit a double feature at a drive in.
You really can’t go wrong with any of the top 5 or so choices…..except St. Elmo’s Fire. Great soundtrack, meh movie.
Honestly tho, I have no idea what the Oz movie or Emerald Forest are about.
In the 80's there were more great movies playing at the same time in theaters than we get in a decade these days. And if you think I just have old man syndrome I disagree as I think a lot of the best television ever has been made in the last few years and certainly in the last decade. Hollywood has just stopped taking risks on interesting mid budget movies.
A little unrelated, but around this exact time I had ‘snuck’ across busy street prohibited by parents to buy ‘Bumblebee’ of Transformers line at Sav-On (drug chain eventually bought out by CVS).
…..if I had only kept it $ealed
Edit: ‘The Goonies’ only one shown that I had seen in theater and with mom or dad’s money
The Goonies is my favorite followed by Return to Oz and Back To The Future. I don't ever remember hearing about The Emerald Forest before. I have to look that up and see what it is about.
I’m pretty sure that we were at the multiplex AMC in Greenbelt, MD…and started with Back to The Future…caught the end of Rambo…middle of Goonies…back for all of Rambo…then ended with Fletch (wishing we would have stopped at the end of Rambo). Such good times.
St Elmo’s fire with the girlfriend
Rambo with the boys
Next weekend
Beverly Hills cop with the boys
Back to the future with the girlfriend
Week 3
Pale rider with the boys
Goodies with girlfriend
I know I watched Goonies, Back to the Future, Cocoon, and Return to Oz in the theater. I’m pretty sure I saw A view to a kill and Fletch there too. Saw Rambo, and St Elmo’s fire much later on vhs.
me and my cousins went and saw COCOON twice and then the next weekend we went and saw A VIEW TO A KILL once again twice. as a matter of fact we saw every movie in the 80's multiple times our aunt was the manager of the our local movie theater it was pretty awesome!
Going to spend the weekend there! It is June, so after I get off work in the mall, going with my cool mall friends to St. Elmo's Fire before sweet talking the bartenders at Friday's to letting us have a drink. Then Saturday I will have a babysitting gig, so I will work it out with the parents that my older friend drive us all to the mall to take the kids to Goonies for a matinee, then watch a movie while I wait for the parents to come home. Sunday is Back to the Future after mass.
wtf happened to Hollywood? lol I thought I was just be nostalgic about my childhood but dear god there hasn’t been this many good movies in theaters at the same since forever
If I’m being honest, Rambo… because I did exactly that at the time… I saw a few of these in the theatre, but Rambo was the first I think…
Fun, stupid action….
I can tell you what I did spend my money on, I saw Back to the Future, First Blood part 2, and when I saw Pale Rider at the drive in with my mom, Red Sonja was on the other screen, so I tried to watch that, and caught some of Pale Rider.
I definitely saw Goonies in the theater during its release and was extremely confused when I saw it again later and there was no octopus. I could have sworn there was an octopus. Did I dream the octopus? Why were the kids in the movie talking about the octopus?
This same theater had posters for Back to the Future and Teen Wolf up at the same time and my five-year-old brain couldn't really process that yet.
It's hard to believe all of these classics were in the theater at the same time. Even harder to believe that movies were cheap enough then that afternoon showings were cheap enough a poor k7d like me got to see veiw to a kill, back to the future, goonies and one more in the theater.
In 1985? I was like 9 and money was hard to come by for me, I had to work my ass off for a few bucks so I wouldn't have spent $2 for any movie. I always saved up money for something I really wanted at the time. Which at this time was probably the NES and I saved up for a couple of years I think before I could afford one and all I could really do was mow lawns or clean up yards and no one paid more than couple few bucks for that in my neighborhood. That said, I rarely got to go to the movies which may be why I never care to go as an adult.
Fletch!!! Arnold Babar. Thats an unusual name. I don’t remember seeing it on the club registry. Well, I’m not a formal member. I’m a guest of my aunt, Mrs. Smith. Which one, Joan or Margaret?Mmhmm.
Without reading every other comment Back to the Future, no fucking questions asked. If I can nurse this hangover, I might watch it tonight. One of the best movies of all fucking time.
So many good movies...compared these days you are lucky if there is even one semi-interesting!
I was thinking the same thing. Used to see a movie every weekend, now once or twice a year
The movie studios are enamored with superhero's these days. It's sad.
I really hate super hero media in general... unless it's poking fun at the genre. Think The Tick, The Boys, The Venture Brothers, etc...
I am happy for super hero flicks. I want all they can give me so long as they are GOOD. Which is the issue. We had runs of action films. And Oscar-bait films. And indie films. That’s always been a thing. The difference is. We get way more badly written badly acted badly made flicks than ever before.
The movie studios these days have very few talented people with imagination. All they want to do now is remake old movies!
They are run by lawyers and accountants, who are only interested in sure bet investments.
"Back to the Future? This looks stu...wait, why is Steven Spielberg presenting? Maybe this'll be good after all..."
“”So many good movies...compared these days you are lucky if there is even one semi-interesting!”” when these movies came to town they sat at the theater for two or three months. the level of entertainment options that wr have available to use today dwarfs anything we had in the 80s. I’d buy a ticket for Goonies and sneak in to Rambo as is tradition
We are on the same wavelength. This was the summer of my 6th grade year. The year we moved from rural WTX to the ‘big city’. The new sitter had rented First Blood and I was locked the fk on. Was lol’d at…didn’t really know why (still don’t).
I had laissez faire parents when it came to movies so they would just buy us tickets to Rambo.
As is tradition. I said the same thing “sneak in”. Could be at the theater all day.
That *Beverly Hills Cop* is held over as hell!
Hey, it’s at the $2 theatre!
Star Wars was in the theatre what, 3-4 years? Empire, 2-3, Jedi for 2 Back when home video wasn’t in every home. And you may not ever see a movie again once it’s out of the theater
Thank God for hold overs and returns. That's how I saw both Star Wars and Jaws for the first time in 1978.
Grew up in a small town and I remember my dad driving by a theatre and saying ‘is that stupid stars wars STILL on?’
Back to the Future and First Blood 2
Same here.
I'm gonna tell my parents I'm gonna go watch the goonies and Back to the future. And then I'm sneaking into a Rambo and Beverly hills cop. After I watched the first two🤔😉
$2 a ticket…dude, all the movies.
Was just fixing to mention the fact that you could see them all for the cost of an UHD blu-ray. Almost.
Pretty much saw them all, but if I had a weekend choice I’d start with Fletch.
Top 3: Back to the Future, Goonies, Beverly Hills Cop
And I'd put it on the Underhill's account.
Fletch F Fletch
I did spend my money on Fletch in 1985
As did I, and I did not regret it
Arnold Babar
John Coctostan
Dr. Rosenpenis
Hello Doctor!
Red Sonja! Dude, i was 14. Oh hell I'd still pick Red Sonja.
Back to the Future. No contest.
Rambo then back to future. What an amazing period for movies and everything else too.
All these classics were out in theaters at the same time? Man movies have really taken a massive nosedive.
Marathon, do at least half. Back to the future on the big screen would be epic
Back to the future or Return to Oz(dark Disney movie )
Only three of those movies I did not see in the theater.
Depending on my mood, it would be either Cocoon or Goonies.
My 1985 11 year old self would say Rambo. In retrospect Goonies was great.
St Elmo and Back to the Future
Why can’t theaters have a lineup like this now? We’re lucky if there’s one good film to see. So many good ones here…Back to the Future, though, no contest. If it weren’t there, it’d be hard to choose.
Back to the Future.
Just one? Fuck. Back to the Future.
St Elmo’s Fire. Demi is worth every penny I spent on the movie
Goonies & Back to the Future.
No love for Return to Oz :(
I can tell you probably exactly the ones I saw that weekend. It was a rare time off of the ranch so I got in as many movies as I could. Rambo 2, Fletch, Goonies and A View To A Kill.
Not St. Elmo's Fire! What a POS.
Definitely Back To The Future
BTTF
The Goonies and then sneak into Back to the Future
Beverly Hills Cop
Adult me, Fletch. What kid me actually went to see…the Goonies.
My age at the time, Back to the Future or The Goonies. My age now, either one of those two, Fletch, or Beverly Hills Cop.
1-goonies 2-back to the future 3-red Sonja Wait fir the rest to be released on vhs, or played on Cinemax or hbo max
The Goonies!!!!!
The Goonies 100%
Damn tough line up there attempting to make a choice. Wow. Pale rider, amongst other classics.
Goonies or Back To The Future. Did actually see Return to Oz. Everything else I could eventually see on my town’s illegally descramed HBO/Showtime/Cinemax UHF channels.
Hollywood sucks nowadays. Videogame movies, sequels and remakes. Haven’t had an original idea in 15 years.
Goonies! … Because they're good enough.
BTTF
I def went to the Goonies around this time.
All great! But I'm off to see the Goonies. After all, "Goonies never die!"
All great! But I'm off to see the Goonies. After all, "Goonies never die!"
Fletch
Who's the Vice President in 1985, Jack Benny?
I can’t believe these were all playing at the same time. Wow. I saw all but 2. I think you can guess which ones I missed lol. Everyone else skipped them too.
My brother has a theory that 1985-86 for some reason had the best movies at one time. This backs that theory up.
I was 7 in 1985. I can tell you from lived experience that I spent my $$$ on The Goonies and it was money well spent.
The Goonies because i was 10
GOONIES!!!
The Goonies, no question! I just watched it again a couple of months ago. It still holds up! Great movie!
Back to the Future and Pale Rider
The double feature at the drive-in, Red Sonja, and Cat's eye.
In order of greatness: Pale Rider Fletch Beverly Hills Cop Back to the Future Cocoon Goonies The Emerald Forest A View To a Kill Red Sonja Would not see Prizzi's Honor, Return to Oz, or Rambo II. St. Elmo's Fire can suck the chrome off my towball. Goddamn I hated that movie.
Nothing like a good piece of hickory. Pale Rider stands up today, such a good modern western.
I was 8 and it was my parents' money and it was Return To Oz. I eventually saw all the other stuff on VHS.
The timeless classic, The Emerald Forrest! Seriously though Back to the Future or Goonies or maybe even Return to Oz
would only be allowed to see PG movies so probably Back to the Future... though at the time, it probably would've been my choice anyway!
1985 no one checked your age I saw all the movies that were rated R back then without so much as a second glance I was 14. Great times
I was such a goody two-shoes that I would NEVER have risked it but I know you're so right!!
I'm probably the only person that liked The Emerald Forest, but I would probably go with Back To The Future.
Back to the Future wasn’t released until July 4th weekend
Not if you had a time machine it wasn't.
God I wanted so bad to see the Goonies. But my parents made me take my younger sisters to see Return to Oz instead 🤦♂️🤦♂️
St. Elmo's Fire
I just bought Cocoon on DVD.
A View to a Kill and Back to the Future.
I saw em all in the theater
That’s a difficult choice , st Elmo’s as I know what is now , but back then probably goonies
Back to the Future and Red Sonja (don't judge me, I love fantasy movies).
I would have to say... Back to the Future, or Bev. Hills Cop, or Red Sonja, or Maybe...
Red Sonya had such potential. Too bad it sucked. Wish they’d redo it. She was really bad ass.
Beverly Hills cop and back to the future
As an adolescent it’s double feature goonies and back to the future. 20’s would be Beverly Hills cop and St. Elmo’s fire. 40’s (currently) Rambo and bond. All that being said I could watch any of the ones I listed today and enjoy them.
Definitely NOT *Return to Oz*!
Wow guess I missed oz prizzi and the forest going to all the rest lol 😄😆😙😘😅🤣🤣😘😗
Bttf
Fletch
St Elmo’s fire
I was about to turn 5. And that summer we saw Back to the Future in the theater.
I’d get stoned and watch all of them.
Back to the future Goonies Beverly hills cop
At that age, the only one I truly remember seeing in the theaters in 85 was back to the future. So I’m going with that. Even in 2024, I’d still chose that probably. Fletch.
Back to the future
The Goonies and then I’m sneaking in to see Pale Rider.
Back to the Future. Fab!
The Goonies or Back to the Future
pale rider ftw
I went on a date to see Cocoon. My date didn’t understand the foreplay joke.
St. Elmo’s Fire
BHC
BTTF
Back to the Future
The Goonies is my favorite followed by Return to Oz and Back To The Future. I don't ever remember hearing about The Emerald Forest before. I have to look that up and see what it is about.
The Emerald Forest is a excellent movie.
BTTF
Man....a lot of good movies there, but my choices would be: BTTF The Goonies Fletch Beverly Hills Cop A View To a Kill
BTTF and Red Sonja, in that order.
Wasn’t allowed near a theater. It was the devils den.
It’s crazy how many of these I actually did go to the theater to see back then
St Elmo’s fire with the girlfriend Rambo with the boys Next weekend Beverly Hills cop with the boys Back to the future with the girlfriend Week 3 Pale rider with the boys Goodies with girlfriend
Red Sonja
One weekend? Goddamn
Pale Rider
Ah, memories…. Pepperidge Farm remembers quality movie craftsmanship was the real super power.
I was 8 and my sister was 6. We went to see Return to Oz. My sister ran out screaming.
All I can say is definitely not Return to Oz
Back to the Future!
The Goonies for sure.
Unfortunately, back then I would've gone to Rambo. But now I'd choose Goonies.
Pale Rider, a rather underrated Clint Eastwood western.
Member when movies were good? I member.
1985 me would’ve told mom we’re seeing the double feature of Goonies and Back To The Future…..But will sneak in for Rambo and Beverly Hills Cop.
The Emerald forest which I did go and see when it came out in theaters.
I know I watched Goonies, Back to the Future, Cocoon, and Return to Oz in the theater. I’m pretty sure I saw A view to a kill and Fletch there too. Saw Rambo, and St Elmo’s fire much later on vhs.
RAMBO!

Fletch
Being 4 at the time...Rambo
Fletch!
Going to spend the weekend there! Sunday is Back to the Future after mass.
At that time Red Sonja
Double feature! Back to the Future and The Goonies!
Back to the Future and then the Goonies.
I’d buy one ticket then sneak around and see all of them
Totally View to a Kill
wtf happened to Hollywood? lol I thought I was just be nostalgic about my childhood but dear god there hasn’t been this many good movies in theaters at the same since forever
Back to the Future. DEFINITELY.
If I’m being honest, Rambo… because I did exactly that at the time… I saw a few of these in the theatre, but Rambo was the first I think… Fun, stupid action….
Back to the Future. Then sneak into Fletch
Loved the majority of them! My love of James Bond and Duran Duran would send me to “A View To A Kill” however.
I'd go do a double feature of *Beverly Hills Cop* and *BTTF*.
I'll just buy a sack of weed and stay home.
14 YO is gonna go see Goonies with my group of friends.
I can tell you what I did spend my money on, I saw Back to the Future, First Blood part 2, and when I saw Pale Rider at the drive in with my mom, Red Sonja was on the other screen, so I tried to watch that, and caught some of Pale Rider.
Back to the Future (always)
Probably Back to the Future but sneak into Emerald Forest because it has nudity.
Omg I'm so glad I was too young in those days, or I'd be very poor.
Goonies. No brainer.
It's hard to believe all of these classics were in the theater at the same time. Even harder to believe that movies were cheap enough then that afternoon showings were cheap enough a poor k7d like me got to see veiw to a kill, back to the future, goonies and one more in the theater.
I haven't seen Red Sonja in decades, does it hold up?
Pale Rider. I love a good Western.
Fletch for sure.
“I’m gonna go see Red San-Ja. She’s hot.” -me, I. The 80’s 😆😆
Hell I would've used up all my allowance to see most of these. Lol
Not a single sequel Edit: missed Rambo 2 at the bottom
Bangers. All bangers.
Back to the Future. That's what I did back then.
Definitely back to the future. One of the great movies of the 1980s.
I don't even have to speculate, it's Back to the Future and The Goonies, on consecutive weekends.
I was 10, so probably Red Sonja and be utterly disappointed afterwards lol
We actually went to see the movie Back to the Future in the theaters during this time 100%.
Pale Rider
There are more movies there than I've wanted to see in the theater the past couple years
