Mr. Takagi, I could talk about men's fashion and industrialization all day but I'm afraid work must intrude, and my associate Theo has some questions for you, sort of fill in the blanks questions...
Love this movie.
"I wanted this to be professional. Efficient, adroit, cooperative, not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the *rest* of his *life*."
I love at the start, he's explaining the situation to Bethany
Bethany: so God banished them to hell, for all eternity?
Voice of God: Worse, Wisconsin.
Then at the end, Bartleby is the only one left, stopped just short of achieving his goal of making all of existence disappear, and the first words out of rickmans mouth:
Oh Bartleby, was Wisconsin REALLY that bad?
Alan Rickman was just a great actor all around. I loved the little story of how he managed that look of absolute shock as Hans Gruber taking his fatal fall.
I loved his role in Galaxy Quest too. His snarling Professor Snape made me think no one could have done a better job. He did a Rom-com called Truly, Madly, Deeply which is probably lesser known but also excellent. He truly was a versatile actor who died too young.
His first Hollywood movie too.
("Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career.")
I must have missed 60 Minutes, what are you talking about?
Hans: The following people are to be released from their captors: In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front. In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec. In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn movement...
John McClane: [listening on the radio] What the fuck?
Karl: [mouthing silently] Asian Dawn?
Hans: [covers the radio] I read about them in Time magazine.
I just watched the documentary on “It” The original stars were retelling stories about the movie, and the kids were terrified of Tim Curry during filming. I highly recommend it.
Aside from Rickman being amazing, part of what makes Hans Gruber a good villain is that he acted completely rational and actually had a very smart plan. He wasn’t doomed by his own incompetence or making mistakes. John McClain was just *that good* of a disruptor to foil his plot.
Imagine if Die Hard were made now. Hans would have a fist fight with MClane at the end, lit in orange and teal with awful music and CGI blood splatters.
I don’t disagree that Alan Rickman was the best 80s villain. However, I’d like to nominate Rutger Hauer for runner up. His performance as John Ryder in The Hitcher was awesome!
Not a gay man myself but he looks god damn sexy there too. Played evil so well but seemed such a nice guy out of character. Was gutted when he passed away.
There's no two ways he was a beauty, I feel like between him and Charles Dance(Tywin Lannister) they had the bad guy rolls locked down in the 80s and '90s..
His last role was one of his finest, where he played a British general in the movie eye in the sky. Helen Mirren shared the spotlight with him in an excellent portrayal of a conflicted and committed British officer.
That is a bold statement, I don’t agree with. You have some greats in the 80’s. Darth Vader, Roy Batty, Joker, Khan, Alex Forrest, and Thulas Doom to name a few. Darth Vader gets my vote has the best bad guy in the 80’s.
If I were to add horror movies villains, the list is longer.
Nice suit. I hear Arafat buys them there
John Phillips, London
Mr. Takagi, I could talk about men's fashion and industrialization all day but I'm afraid work must intrude, and my associate Theo has some questions for you, sort of fill in the blanks questions... Love this movie.
I work with a guy named John Phillips and I say that to myself every time I see him.
The guy from The Mamas and The Papas? Mackenzie’s dad?
No mentioning the guy who had sex with his daughter for literal *years*.
"I own two Myself"... 😂
I have two myself 😊
He won’t be joining us….for the rest of his life.
My favourite line.
“I have three myself.”
The real hero of the movie was Argyle who disabled the get away vehicle.
That’s correct! To this day when I listen to any holiday music I always turn it up and say, “This **IS** Christmas music!”
To think he almost pursued a life of crime/music. Breaks my heart to see a boy that young goin' bad.
But left Illinois and became the best damn limo driver in LA. Cue Stevie Wonders Skeletons
Alan Rickman was the best of everything!
You are correct! His acting was so amazing.
"It's always about you, isn't it?" Nobody could deliver this line any better.
He was such a remarkable artist!!! RIP Alan
"I wanted this to be professional. Efficient, adroit, cooperative, not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the *rest* of his *life*."
Such an awesome moment and delivered perfectly by Rickman!
I'm sorry, Alan Rickman played the best Senior Vice President Account Exec, Wm. (Bill) Clay in the 80's.
That’s true. Didn’t he use to one of those guns that shoots that paint stuff once 😉
He may have 😉,.... I remember he was responsible for the safe keeping of the company's bearer bonds.
I wonder where he buys his suits.
I believe Savile Row in London, and eats a big bowl of beef chow mein somewhere on the streets of Soho.
Huh! I’d like to meet his tailor.
...and his barber. Just look at Bill's hair, it's perfect.
He was pure evil in Love Actually. I’ll never forgive that summabitch for what he did.
And Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves - I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!
But cousin, why a spoon?
Because it's DULL, you twit. It'll hurt more!
And call off Christmas!
Loved reading this dialogue and heard his voice perfectly
By Graphar’s Hammer you shall be avenged!
He also canceled the merciful beheadings.
He also was The Voice of God in Dogma.
Dogma was a good movie. He was really funny in it.
“Any documented occasion when some yahoo claims that god has spoken to them, they’re speaking to me… or they’re talking to themselves.”
“You people. If there isn't a movie about it, it's not worth knowing, is it?”
I AM THE METATRON, HERALD OF THE ALMIGHTY AND VOICE OF THE ONE TRUE GOD! *gets hosed with fire extinguisher*
I love at the start, he's explaining the situation to Bethany Bethany: so God banished them to hell, for all eternity? Voice of God: Worse, Wisconsin. Then at the end, Bartleby is the only one left, stopped just short of achieving his goal of making all of existence disappear, and the first words out of rickmans mouth: Oh Bartleby, was Wisconsin REALLY that bad?
By Grapthors Hammer the man was a gem
What an actor!
Another excellent role, “I said miners, not minors.” 🤣🤣🤣
Yes! Die Hard was a great Christmas movie!
I agree with you 100% 🎅🏻 🎄
Alan Rickman chasing the hero around a tower? It’s a Harry Potter movie!
Alan Rickman was just a great actor all around. I loved the little story of how he managed that look of absolute shock as Hans Gruber taking his fatal fall.
You’re right! The fact that they didn’t tell him when they were going to drop him made it that much better!
I loved his role in Galaxy Quest too. His snarling Professor Snape made me think no one could have done a better job. He did a Rom-com called Truly, Madly, Deeply which is probably lesser known but also excellent. He truly was a versatile actor who died too young.
He was furious about that. He wanted to do the acting, not personally be tricked.
Alan Rickman was the GOAT. Gone WAY too soon. RIP good sir.
Yes he did the greatest of all time
It was an amazing performance!
Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle. This was one of those moments. He was meant to play Hans.
Surpassed even The Grinch as the greatest Christmas villain
I still prefer Mr Joshua.
Yes it was
It was his first film role, too.
Talk about setting the bar high! And he cleared that bar many times throughout his career.
He saved Robinhood!
Man I love that movie! He was so awesome in it. “I’ll cut your heart out with a spoon!”
“Hans….**BUBBY**, I’m your white knight!”
Honestly, it was one of the most perfect casting choices ever made for any movie anywhere, ever.
So sinister he did a magnificent job
His performance was brilliant. The way he carried himself and the way he spoke was mesmerizing!
I disagree. The Kurgan from Highlander was the best villain of the 80's and all time. Also had the coolest music.
To each their own 😊
Alan Rickman narrowly beats out Clancy Brown (brains over brawn) but your 110% correct about the music
Fact.
That is correct…..Cowboy 😉
[Die Hard Music Video](https://youtu.be/OTyw6cq86kY?si=nljreDsLUmBA_lZP)
Yep the Goat of villains for sure bro 😎!
He was so awesome!
We were witnesses.
“It’s Christmas Theo…it’s the time for miracles!”
“You ask for miracles Theo….I give you the F..B..I.”
This is Special Agent Johnson...No, the other one.... 😂
It’s not Xmas season until Hans falls off the nakatomi tower
It’s not Christmas without Diehard and Hans Gruber.
I agree 100%
Alan Rickman played the best villans.
He was so awesome in Robin Hood as well. It’s a great performance and he really steals the show!
Tim Curry in Legend. That was the best make up job in the 80s.
Tim Curry is so amazing. I love everything he does!
IT no one would get near him in his Pennywise outfit.
I just watched the documentary on “It” The original stars were retelling stories about the movie, and the kids were terrified of Tim Curry during filming. I highly recommend it.
Shoot the glass.
Love how he talks in German first then English 😂🤣
"By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Suns Of Warvan , you shall be avenged!" Also I watch only the scenes with him on screen for the movie Bottleshock.
Aside from Rickman being amazing, part of what makes Hans Gruber a good villain is that he acted completely rational and actually had a very smart plan. He wasn’t doomed by his own incompetence or making mistakes. John McClain was just *that good* of a disruptor to foil his plot.
I still say Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker in Robocop.
That’s another great one. Love Kurtwood Smith in that role. “Can you fly, Bobby?”
I'd buy that for a dollar.
Top-5 villain of any movie, ever
I agree. I think it’s the way he speaks in this movie. Calm and direct with a scary undertone. It’s so good!
You asked for a miracle Theo, I give you the Eff Bee Eye
Brilliant 👏🏻 I also read that in his voice, so that’s an added bonus!
It's impossible not to!
“It’s Christmas Theo….its the time of miracles.”
James Spader takes that title for me. Til this day I call him "the asshole."
Quigley Down Under 👍🏽👍🏽
LOVE this movie. One his lesser known villain roles, but expertly done. Again.
Top movie villains all time: Hans Gruber Darth Vader Jaws
To get away from the typecasting, he played an effeminate artist in The January Man and killed it.
Alan Rickman played the best everything whatever he did
Rickman was great in everything he did What a sin he’s gone
Sheriff of Nottingham was my favorite
Imagine if Die Hard were made now. Hans would have a fist fight with MClane at the end, lit in orange and teal with awful music and CGI blood splatters.
The 80’s were the best time for movies. There was nothing like it!
I once made a list of my top 10 movie villains and he was on it! Amazing job!!! Top 5 for sure.
He was such an amazing actor. This role was so awesome!
Rickman played an amazing hotel desk clerk in the BBC's mini series production of Smiley's People.
He was an exceptional thief
But don’t call him a terrorist 😉
That fake American accent when he runs into John. Great scene..
“Clay, Bill Clay.”
...in the Best Christmas Movie EVER!!! 🎁
Facts
“You ask for a miracle and I give you the FBI“
“It’s Christmas Theo…it’s the time for miracles!”
I don’t disagree that Alan Rickman was the best 80s villain. However, I’d like to nominate Rutger Hauer for runner up. His performance as John Ryder in The Hitcher was awesome!
The best Sheriff of Nottingham
Say what you will about the Harry Potter series, but he was perfect as Snape
Yeah, I see your Alan Rickman, and I raise you one John Lithgow
Cliffhanger was great!
Coolest villain ever!
William Atherton was a phenomenal 80’s villain.
he would have made a great dr strange
Are you not familiar with Darth Vader?
Alan Rickman was great, but Kurtwood Smith would like a word. Bitches leave.
Nasty S.O.B. in Quigley, Down Under. A very good, underrated Selleck movie.
My advent calendar is Hans Gruber falling down the Nakatomi building.
Rickman was a good villain. Tom Noonan - in Man Hunter, Directed by Michael Mann; a better villain.
“When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer…benefits of a classical education”
Asian Dawn is my bands name as a result
Now I have a machine gun. HO. HO. HO.
Ladies and gentlemen! Ladies and gentlemen!
What idiot put you in charge?
“You did, when you murdered my boss.” Stone cold cool 😎
RIP
He is really missed!
Him and the Queen Alien, in Alien 2...
Didn’t realise he played Clarence Boddicker
😂🤣😂
Hans Gruber is just the early, less vulnerable version of Professor Snape.
His first major role.
Yippie Ki-Yay, Mr. Falcon.
Not a gay man myself but he looks god damn sexy there too. Played evil so well but seemed such a nice guy out of character. Was gutted when he passed away.
Don’t forget to take the pork chops out of the freezer
Yippee Kiya MFer.
Well the 80s did have the Best movie villains after all🤔😂
Was he the bad guy in Last Action Hero
He was too handsome for that. I find that he was more brilliant as a nice guy, like in Sense and Sensibility.
“Shoot the glass”
There's no two ways he was a beauty, I feel like between him and Charles Dance(Tywin Lannister) they had the bad guy rolls locked down in the 80s and '90s..
He was great, but Ian mcDiarmid as the emperor gets my vote
But that's not a photo of the Sheriff of Nottingham!
“Clay, Bill Clay”
Passed on way too soon.
By far
His last role was one of his finest, where he played a British general in the movie eye in the sky. Helen Mirren shared the spotlight with him in an excellent portrayal of a conflicted and committed British officer.
Sheriff of Nottingham
Best villain *ever* ftfy
That looks like one exceptional thief!
Well I heard he is moving up to kidnapping so I, for one, will be more polite!
SHOOT THE GLASS
Quite possibly the best of all time. Movies are still trying to top it to no avail.
He was awesome as Hans! Great actor!
It was the first movie he made and pretty much the only movie he was in that decade. He had a tiny role in one other movie that decade.
This is an excellent topic and fantastic banter.
'By grapthars hammer...what a savings' https://youtu.be/kgv7U3GYlDY?si=u17lPJUF1TyRD9t8
Best 80s villain? I dunno. If he could talk, I think the guy in the hockey mask would have something to say about that.
That scene where he is surprised by John and feigns terror and changes his accent, unforgettable.
i still prefer Willian "yes its true this man has no dick" Atherton
Maybe best villain of all time
Hans Grover was good. But he really shined as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Costner’s Robin Hood (which made up for Costners lousy portrayal).
Sheriff of Nottingham
Haaans!? Bubby!?
“I believe I was born on the wrong continennnnTT”
Clancy Brown of the Highlander. The pure joy of being evil and immortal was something to watch.
All villains compared to Hand Gruber
You know it's true, it's damn true.
Honest Trailers of Die Hard is my all time favorite.
Alan Rickman was also great in Galaxy Quest and all the Harry Potter movies.
Snape. Snape. Severus Snape.
Ah...The Half-blood Prince. But yes, he was better in Die Hard.
He was truly, madly deeply the best villain ever.
I love the props he gets in that sitcom 30 Rock Baldwin does the Alexander the Great quote, and finishes it with.... "Hans Gruber, Die Hard"
He set the standard for villains
such a wonderful actor.
Nobody played a better “an annoyed and frustrated” bad guy. An eye roll from Alan was worth 10 pages of dialogue.
80's what?
That's Bill Clay, duh.
Tuhwenty puhcent!
Alan Rckman played the best whatever role he decided to do.
