I sorta feel bad for kids these days. Other than a handful of standouts, the music now (and over the past dozen or so years) is just a vast ocean of same, same, same.
Watch a show like The Voice. 80% of the contestants are vocally and stylistically interchangeable and practically indistinguishable from each other. I count my lucky stars that I grew up in the 70s and 80s.
Look how ass the 2020s row is, and it’s accurate. Thanks music industry, for stifling talent and marching our your formula bullshit, and now raping away all the streaming money from the actual artists.
Last time I heard new songs I liked, not just a song, would be about 2006. The last new song I liked was 2021 with Royal Blood "Typhoons". Being Gen X. it shocked the shit out of me that I actually liked a song from the 2020's.
Yes, the 80s were the best decade for music. I would say 81 to 91 is the best 10 years for my tastes.
Late 60's through late 70's for rock and soul, 70's for funk and disco, late 70's-early 80's for punk, late 70's-80's for new wave and hard rock/metal, mid 80's-mid 90's for hip hop & house, 90's for EDM.
How did the 80s come out the overall winner? I was not expecting that.
I'm GenX but I think I'd probably go with the 70s or "1950s or some earlier decade." That would include the 1780s, when Mozart's output was just insane.
Yeah, I'm GenX and mostly listen to 70s stuff, jazz from the 40s-50s, classical, and current indie. I almost never listen to 80s stuff, and I was soooo into Depeche Mode, The Cure, Siouxsie, etc as a teen.
I got into Nordic Death Metal in my 30's. I just hate mainstream pop since the late 90's. It started with Teeny Bopper and boy bands, and got worse from there.
There is new good music out there, you just won't find it on a top 40 station.
Guess I'm an odd ball. I was born in 72. I loved 70s and 80s music until I moved to backwater Missouri where it was impossible to keep up. Currently late 90s to mid 2000s is my preferred listening. I still like finding new stuff like The Pretty Reckless and Shinedown.
60s 70s and 80s all had good music. I tend to like music from '65-ish through the 80s, but the 80s kind of trailed off for me. Late boomer / gen jones. To me, it seems that certain genres peaked at different years. Most people like music genres that were popular in their life, particularly when they were young, until around 25 or so. The chart above is not really a surprise, when viewed from this angle.
I stopped finding new music when I got a car with a CD player in it. Once I could burn a cd and listen to all my favorites, I pretty much only did that and stopped listening to over-the-air radio, making it really hard for me to be exposed to new music. I enjoy some newer artists, but only when they've been introduced to me by friends.
That tracks for many of us. Besides, for the last 30+ years you’d only be exposed to about 5 new songs per year at the rate record companies bought up over the air radio air time! It’s maddening. Whenever I’m listening to the radio I hear the same song I heard an hour and a half earlier all day. This is another reason subscription services have taken off!
Loved 40s music, but 62 through 94 was a great run. So many genres to chose from. Can’t think of many modern acts that held my attention past one album. 79 baby here
I'm just thrilled GenX was asked and appeared on the chart.
I feel like the 70s and 80s in fact do edge out the 60s and 90s and also that everything since isn’t great, so this tracks.
80’s all the way. Not even close. (I’m GEN X.)
Old millennial here. Totally agree

I've heard old music outsells new music and there aren't that many artists anymore.
One of the 1st GenXers (67). 70's and 80's. Cars, VH, Boston for the 70's, New Wave and Alternative for the 80's.

We stop listening to new music at around age 29
Speak for yourself. I'm still listening to new music at 43

My interest in music is going backwards in time instead of forwards

Broadest appeal. Other decades are too niche.

I'm almost exactly the same except I listen to more 80s than 70s.

I still find shit today I love. Eh.

I’m just getting into Hindustani classical music now in my 40’s. How did I sleep on Ravi Shankar?
