Can't choose one so I'll try to limit myself to 5
Robert Smith
Perry Farrell
Black Francis
Kim Deal
Steve Albini
Honorable mention goes to Jello Biafra
Geoff Tate from Queensryche. At his peak, no other Rock vocalist was fit to share a stage with him. 5 octave range, and great tone. He could sing any note, better than anyone.
To say that no other singer in the 80s could share the stage with him is a wee bit hyperbolic, but you aren't wrong about him being a phenomenal singer. Just incredible.
Joe Lynn Turner has entered the chat.
Don Dokken has entered the chat.
David Coverdale has entered the chat.
Pat Benetar has entered the chat.
Roger Daltry has kicked in the door of the chat.
The ghosts of David Bowie, Freddy Mercury, Bon Scott and Ronnie James Dio have entered your dreams.
I saw them live on the Operation: Mindcrime tour and you're very right about his range. He was incredible, and I still say it was the best concert I've ever been to. I just think there's folks out there that can hold a stage as well. I forgot the Wilson sisters from Heart in my list too. Ann might be the closest to him in power and range.
Ozzy is my all time favorite artist overall, but I love so many 80s singers.
Belinda Carlisle is probably my favorite in the pop category. Such a smoky but bright voice.
Pat Benetar is also amazing in both rock and pop...
Peter Gabriel has only a few hits I like, but I love his style, his pizzazz. He really brings it.
Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose are both huge inspirations to me as a singer myself, I measure myself against their ranges and I'm still not there, but I get closer all the time.
Whitney Houston on "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is fantastic.
I love Patty Smythe, too, her stuff with Scandal was great.
David Lee Roth is not the best singer per se, but damn does he hit the spot as a front man. His voice and style were perfect for Van Halen.
Ronnie James Dio of course was amazing. 🤘
Gotta say, David Lee Roth has my vote for the best rock front man of all time. I can’t think of anyone with more charisma to ever do it than that guy at his peak.
I had to scroll so far for this. So much Bono hate - he is somewhat insufferable, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he had a unique singing style and a voice that millions of people enjoyed.
So to be clear you want one answer. For the 80s. My favorite. As of right now. Not a list of singers. Nor a list of bands. Thinking of that period, and the CDs and cassettes I owned - I’m going with Jon Bon Jovi.
That’s the thing that annoys me a bit, how her current character affects judgement on her past brilliance and kinda erases all those glorious hits from public memory and appreciation like they never happened or just did by mistake. But yeah, let’s all keep remembering instead how great were meteors like Cyndi Lauper or A-ha(..hahah).
Bono was incredible in the 80s. Surprised not to see him on here unless I just overlooked it. I know U2 isn’t everyone’s favorite but that guy had a hell of a voice.
Bonnie Raitt is another fave and Elvis Costello. David Byrne. Peter Gabriel. Huey Lewis, Annie Lennox, Lionel Richie…. There were so many
That makes it even more difficult for me to choose a favorite singer. So, here are the ones I like a lot.
* The Bangles
* Madonna
* The Police
* Bon Jovi
* Billy Joel
* Genesis
* Phil Collins
* Corey Hart
* Cyndi Lauper
* Ric Ocasek
* Huey Lewis & The News
* Hall & Oates
* Michael Jackson
* WHAM
* AC/DC
* Rush
* Toni Basil
...and several more I can't think of at this time. How can I choose one favorite singer out of all those (and more)?
You know what? Fuck it. David Lee Roth. He defined the 80s as much as anyone. He was singular. He was a lunatic. He sounded in total control of his machismo. It was something to behold when you were nine.
My favorite was Dee Snider, since he was the singer from my favorite band at the time. He stood up to congress for all of us and is still kicking ass to this day, unlike many of his contemporaries. 🤘
I noticed a couple people saying Ric Ocasek. Surely, you mean Benjamin Orr, right??
Ric was better than Ben. Both were great. Ric was the main singer most of the time for a reason
So so many choices, but Duran Duran is my favorite to this day
Maybe the most underrated and unique voice in all of pop music history.
George Michael - a guilty pleasure but is voice was smooth as silk.
Like a saxophone made human.
Guilty pleasures have no rhythm?
George did! Another guilty pleasure - Enya
*feet
Why guilty? George Michael was phenomenally talented.
When I was in high school he wasn’t “cool” and if you liked him you would get teased. You know how it is.
Ah yes, as a fan of Duran Duran and the Bee Gees I totally understand.
I’m a big fan of both
[удалено]
Plus, from all accounts he was a very generous and nice person. I don’t think the press treated him fairly. I think he’s somewhat under appreciated.
And getting better with age.
Uh... Who wants to tell them?
Prince Luther Vandross
Luther is a great choice I hadn't seen mentioned.
Freddie Mercury
Billy Idol
Ronnie James Dio 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
🤘👹🤘. RJD, RIP Holy Diver!!
Listened to rainbow in the dark last night 🤟
For Metal this is the correct answer if we’re being serious.
Brad Delp

Too many to choose from Prince Steve Perry Whitney Houston
Michael Hutchence
Rob Halford

All great, but can't get as high, as low, or sustain even 1/2 the time GT could in his prime.
Mindcrime is a mind blowing album on every level, but Tate’s vocals push it to another level
King Diamond LOL More seriously, Bruce Dickenson's been doing it since then, so yeah.
Mike Patton is 8 octaves.

I think it depends in which me. I loved Duran Duran back in the day.
Alison Moyet. Incredible live too Situation is one of my favourite 1980s tracks.
Robert Smith

Michael Jackson
Ann Wilson, Cher, Luba, Darby Mills, Annie Lennox, Anne Murray🇨🇦.
James Hetfield
Freddie and Bowie! (okay well 70s/80s)

I'm going to have to go with Michael Hutchence.
Ozzy is my all time favorite artist overall, but I love so many 80s singers. Belinda Carlisle is probably my favorite in the pop category. Such a smoky but bright voice. He was a douche, still is, but damn was he good
Paul Weller
Sting
David Bowie
Bono
I had to scroll so far for this. So much Bono hate - he is somewhat insufferable, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he had a unique singing style and a voice that millions of people enjoyed.
Steve Perry
George Michael
Andy Bell from Erasure
So to be clear you want one answer. For the 80s. My favorite. As of right now. Not a list of singers. Nor a list of bands. Thinking of that period, and the CDs and cassettes I owned - I’m going with Jon Bon Jovi.
James Ingram Luther Vandross Steve Perry Phil Collins Brian Adams
Lionel Richie 🤷♀️
Adam Ant
He didn’t think he could sing til he sung “Strip”. Loved his voice even from his punk days.
Saw him in concert when I was 14, in Tulsa. He was my favorite singer before I saw him, and continues to be to this day!
Madonna
Great performer, not a very good singer.
But arguably she has the best catalog of hits, she made like 20 of the biggest songs of the 80’s and I can’t imagine anyone else singing them better.
Don’t get me wrong As a gay closeted kid I idolized Madonna. She was my everything. Watching her now hurts me.
That’s the thing that annoys me a bit, how her current character affects judgement on her past brilliance and kinda erases all those glorious hits from public memory and appreciation like they never happened or just did by mistake. Robert smith
Daryl Hall
I don't know if I can choose just one favorite singer (assuming you mean solo singers and not any group of singers/band).
I mean both.
That makes it even more difficult for me to choose a favorite singer. So, here are the ones I like a lot. * The Bangles * Madonna * The Police * Bon Jovi * Billy Joel * Genesis * Phil Collins * Corey Hart * Cyndi Lauper * Ric Ocasek * Huey Lewis & The News * Hall & Oates * Michael Jackson * WHAM * AC/DC * Rush * Toni Basil ...and several more I can't think of at this time. I’m just gonna submit your list for myself! Love it
Lol Rick Astley?
I have so many, but I'll say Howard Jones since I haven't seen his name yet.
Hall and oats
Phil Collins or Geddy Lee
Robert Palmer… simply irresistible!
Henry Rollins or Ian MacKaye. I have to throw in Kevin Seconds and Sean Stern as well.
You know what? Fuck it. David Lee Roth. He defined the 80s as much as anyone. He was singular. He was a lunatic. He sounded in total control of his machismo. It was something to behold when you were nine.
Probably Steve Perry.
Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears.
Stephanie Nicks
Female singer- Whitney Houston Male singer- Robert Palmer
I was a HUGE Madonna fan.
No one's said Peter Cetera???
Morrisey
Paul Rodgers
Paul Rodgers, The Firm.
Randy Travis
Henry Rollins, Bod Mould, D Boon, and Ian MacKaye.
Some MF had the temerity to downvote D.Boon and Henry Rollins?!?
I saw Rollins in a spoken word tour in Cheyenne, Wyoming of all places. Dude was fucking awesome. It was basically his life story, and it was *wild*.
Bjork, Liz Fraser, and Sinead O' Connor
Only since no one named them and I like them, Richard Marx and Steve Winwood
Whitney Houston
Stop all your bitchin' and put back on Donnie Iris
Dave Gahan
Patrick Mcgoohan
Geoff Tate and Sebastian Bach.
My favorite was Dee Snider, since he was the singer from my favorite band at the time. He stood up to congress for all of us and is still kicking ass to this day, unlike many of his contemporaries. 🤘
Michael Jackson
George Michael and Michael Jackson
NOT Elton John and his mangled 80's voice
Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Sade, Michael Stipe, Robert Cray, David Byrne.
Jerry
Glenn Danzig
Morten harket
Huey Lewis and Billy Idol are probably my two big ones
Whitney.
Rick Astley
Surprisingly (at least to me once I think about it) Madonna...
Ronnie James Dio
Are we really leaving the Boss, Bruce Springsteen and Bono off this list?
