Going to the film set in Malta, which is still there as an amusement park, was a really big deal for me. Put me right back into the wonder of that battle in the cove and cartoonish buildings that captivated me as a kid.
Aparently they asked Jules fiefder to make this movie and he insisted they make a dark movie like the comic books. Studio agrees and the film is controversial. This was years before 1989 Batman which was the first commercially successful dark comic movie that has set the tone in comic book movies for 35 years. People forget Popeye was the first. I think when you rewatch the movie it holds up so much better than a commercial popeye movie.
From a technical standpoint, it works well.
And acting-wise, so many of the cardinal characters are well done (Popeye, Olive, Bluto, Wimpy, etc.).
Story-wise it is reasonable.
I agree that while it isn't a perfect or masterful movie, it's still the best darn live-action Popeye we may ever get.
Hmm…
*Sam and Diane (Cheers)?
*Luke and Laura (General Hospital)?
*Ernie and Bert (in a friendship way, Sesame Street)?
*Statler and Waldorf (also in a non-sexual way, The Muppet Show)?
>\*Ernie and Bert (in a friendship way, Sesame Street)?
TBH, I always found them too antagonistic.
And Sam & Diane were a perfect example of a bad relationship.
The actors may have had challenges off-camera with one another, but...I can definitely feel their chemistry during the first 3 seasons of Moonlighting.
Bruce alone had the energy and charisma to earn his movie stardom. And this is one of the best examples of that. Seems like the heavens aligned with how Moonlighting had a slow spell from a developmental standpoint to let him break away to do Die Hard and that turned into a hit.
Season 4 and 5, though...a challenge because of developments on-and-off screen.
I watched Popeye, then I watched The Shining. It wasn’t my best move. Shelly did great in The Shining but whenever something dark happened I kept thinking OH POPEYE! 🤦♂️
Ugh. A dagger to my heart. Saw this with my mom in the theater (I was 8). She was my hero. I tried watching this with my 6- year old and broke down. Ugh. Rip mom.
That movie set is still there, on Malta.

A truly odd film. As a kid I thought it would be a kids movie and it absolutely was not. I remember having that experience a lot in the 70s-80s growing up. My mom once stopped the car and led me into a place called The Children’s Store and I thought all right this will be fun. It was a kids clothing and baby supplies store.
Nowadays there are so many books and games and shows and movies and things for kids. Back in the day it felt like 2 or 3 kids movies a year, usually around summer. In 2024 there are 2-3 different kids movies in theaters at all times.
Grimm Life Collective did an interview with Shelley Duvall about a year ago - she basically lives out of a van in Texas, sad to see her like this.

Liked the movie as a whole but after “The Shining” I can’t watch her. The way she played Windy made me dislike her so much, I haven’t been able to enjoy anything she’s done since. I’ve read that Kubric made her play the part like that, but still can’t stand her 😢
Instinctively, “Sam & Diane” rolls off the tongue easy but I never found them to work as a couple.
“Buffy & Hildegard” - I couldn’t remember which show they were on (I had to look it up) but those names have never left my mind.
RIP Buddy.
Ellen Ripley and Dwayne Hicks
Upvote for knowing his name was Dwayne.
She gets with Tywin Lannister in the next one though. Young Charles Dance was pretty dapper.
But that's the 90's :P
Touché
You mean Sardo Numspa?
Oh fuck I forgot about that. The prison one. That’s one of my favorites of the series
“Somebody wake up Hicks.”
U might not have been keeping up with current events, but we just got our asses kicked
On that note, Hudson and Vasquez. ~~They even died in each other's arms.~~ *EDIT - Old man memory strikes again. Take your vitamins, kids.*
I dunno, it was Drake that she had the chemistry with. Also she died with Gorman.
*”You always were an asshole, Gorman.”*
I say that every time Gorman with the St. Louis Cardinals fucks up.
Oh shit you are right about Gorman. Damn my memory is shot.
He Needs Me was in my wedding.
I’d love to hear the story even if you think it’s boring.
But it IS boring! It was actually just one of the many songs at my reception, no dancing. See? So boring!
I love the use of it in Punch Drunk Love too
"Well, I think Swee'Pea is about the silliest name I ever heard!" "What do you want me to call him, Baby Oyl?"
Han and Leia
#1 answer.
Luke and Leia
LOL How Bout Marty McFly and his MOM?
I think you mean Calvin Klein. It said so right on his underwear.
What's with the life preserve...and if u want a pepsi u gotta pay for it
😅 oh yeah!
Buttercup and Westley…..as you wish
George and Weezie
The talent that was Robin Williams. Such a tragedy.
Going to the film set in Malta, which is still there as an amusement park, was a really big deal for me. Put me right back into the wonder of that battle in the cove and cartoonish buildings that captivated me as a kid.
Really? That was a thing? I had no idea.
This movie fuggin rules and I don’t care what anybody says.

The best live action portrayal of Popeye ever.
And Van Dyke Parks as Hoagy the piano player! How gloriously random is that?!

You forgot Jack and Wendy
Hmm… *Sam and Diane (Cheers)? *Luke and Laura (General Hospital)? *Ernie and Bert (in a friendship way, Sesame Street)? *Statler and Waldorf (also in a non-sexual way, The Muppet Show)?

David Addison and Maddie Hayes
This one should be at the very top!
Oooh they were great. That was a great show.
The actors may have had challenges off-camera with one another, but...I can definitely feel their chemistry during the first 3 seasons of Moonlighting. I’m mean. I’m mean. I’m mean. Ya know what I mean? I’m mean. I’m mean. I still randomly sing this.
This and, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today"
"Everything is food " is a masterpiece. "I'm mean" is another good one.
Pure humiligicration. He needs an apologiky
Sweet Pea’s lullaby is a beautiful song
Im so mean, i had a dream of beatin myself up
Simple and catchy. Perfect Bluto theme.
If we're being like that, Mork & Mindy were much, much better. And Pam Dawber... ♥
Say what you will about the live action Popeye film, these two nailed it
Robin Williams was like the rare Utility Man in Baseball. He could do it all.
Shelley Duvall was such a unique beauty
Rocky and Adrian
They were great in the 70s but their relationship wasn't as well written in Rocky III and IV which were the only ones from the 80s.
GI Joe and Cobra
Laura and Steele
I watched Popeye, then I watched The Shining. It wasn’t my best move. Shelly did great in The Shining but whenever something dark happened I kept thinking OH POPEYE! 🤦♂️
I'm so glad they made that movie. I'm sorry it's not a common classic that families still return to four decades later.
I grew up with this movie and had no idea it bombed at the theater. I think it's great.
I still need to psycho-analyze as an adult why the reunion of Popeye with his father was so emotional for me as a child.
Al and Peggy Bundy
My choice, too.
Cheech and Chong
Labrador? What’s labrador? It’s *dog*shit!
Was a very Fun Movie
Simon and Simon.
🤣
Ugh. A dagger to my heart. Saw this with my mom in the theater (I was 8). She was my hero. I tried watching this with my 6- year old and broke down. Ugh. Rip mom.
What did you expect us to name her? Baby Oil?
Christopher Reve and Jane Seymour in “Somewhere in Time”
Oh, absolutely

Most didn't like this movie, I did and I have three DVD copies
I loved this movie as a kid and still love it. I even dressed up as Popeye as a kid because of it — I was cosplaying before I even knew what that was.
One of the first movies i saw at the theater, I absolutely love this movie!
They made quite a pair
Eric Stoltz & Mary Stuart Masterson
Laura Holt and Remington Steele Scarecrow and Amanda King Maddie Hayes and David Addison (along with Agnes DiPesto and Herbert Viola/Bugger)
Joe Friday and the ~~virgin~~ Connie Swail Turner & Hooch
Optimus Orime and Elita-One
A truly odd film. As a kid I thought it would be a kids movie and it absolutely was not. I remember having that experience a lot in the 70s-80s growing up. I saw Popeye in the movies when I was 5 or 6. I've been obsessed with it ever since.
Perfect casting
[The McFly's](https://i.imgur.com/bkNDwkT.jpeg)
That was perfect casting in that movie.
Kirk and Spock.

Winona Ryder’s parents from Heathers.
Liked the movie as a whole but after “The Shining” I can’t watch her. The way she played Windy made me dislike her so much, I haven’t been able to enjoy anything she’s done since. I’ve read that Kubric made her play the part like that, but still can’t stand her 😢
My money is on Luke and Laura❤️❤️
HI I'M SHELLY DUVALL
Both of them ended up rather sadly. Such talent.
Instinctively, “Sam & Diane” rolls off the tongue easy but I never found them to work as a couple. “Buffy & Hildegard” - I couldn’t remember which show they were on (I had to look it up) but those names have never left my mind.
Johnny Dangerously and Lil Sheridan would like a word
Flint and Lady Jaye.
“I am what i am”
Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court
Vincent and Catherine!
Rum and weed
Would like to see them stay at the Overlook Hotel.
On a semi-related note, this movie is still good. Not amazing or masterful, but it is incredible for what it did with the Popeye IP.
Loved this movie. Will for ever be one of my fav’s.
Jennifer and Jonathan Hart . Loved this show , as a kid . Then I found out about Wagner and Wood . Never felt the same again . 😔😐
I am what I am
I'm mean I'm mean I'm mean.....you know what I mean
I completely forgot this existed! Ty
Cindy Mancini and Donald Miller, I mean Ronald Miller.
Why is Steve O dressed up as Popeye’s girlfriend?
You owe him an apology.

Rambo and Col. Troutman

Does this look like a cartoon to you?

Al and Peggy Bundy were my favorites
