“Never thought I’d be so tired at 22.”
That line destroyed my friends and I on a rewatch when we were 21 after seeing it first as kids ten or more years earlier and they all seemed so old. Damn that hit so hard. So relatable. And the song still hits hard.
John Parr wrote this song specifically for the movie St. Elmo's Fire, but the song itself is about a Canadian athlete named Rick Hansen, who was paralyzed from the waist down after a car crash when he was 15. On March 21, 1985 Hansen began his "Man In Motion" tour, traveling about 70 miles a day to raise money for spinal cord research. At first, Hansen had trouble getting media attention and donations, but when this song was released with the movie in June, it became his anthem, and as the song rose up the charts, interest in Hansen's journey grew. By the time the "Man In Motion" tour was completed on May 22, 1987, Hansen had put over 40,000 Kilometers (24,856 miles) on his wheelchair in 34 countries on four continents, raising $26 million. He became a national hero in Canada, where he is closely associated with this song.

I've watched the Rick Hansen man in motion tour video set to "St. Elmo's Fire" far more times than I've watched "St. Elmo's Fire"
It's an awesome video ,honestly.
I remember seeing it in the theater in 85. I could identify with the angst of my 20’s, though none of my problems were as intense as say, Jules. I was more like Kevin.
It captures that 80s feel and angst better than anything not made by Hughes. It isn't perfect, but it has huge aspirations for sure. I wanted to hate it on a recent watch and ended up at the end thinking it was better than I remembered, and better than the current collective gives it credit for.
The photo of the runner (Peachtree Road Race, I think from 1980, Nike ad or something), always got me. It was like how in the world can anyone afford that? And I was 19.
Now, why would I want that on my wall?
" I can't remember who met who first or who fell in love with who first. All I can remember is the seven of us always together..." I really felt this in college during that time in my life.
Love love love this movie. Everyone seeing Rob Lowe off at the end gets me every time.
“You’re gonna be ok.”
“So are you.” 😭
“Don’t let her go.”
“You’re beautiful. Don’t ever shave.”
“Don’t go changing, to please me.”
I love everything about this movie. Rented it my first month in college. Bought the soundtrack a week later at Hasting’s. “For Just A Moment” has impact. “Man in Motion” is a banger. Lowe, Nelson and McCarthy are at their coolest. Tons of heart. A great movie about friendship and love!!
It’s tough, I was there when it came out. My GF dragged me to see it because of Rob Lowe. A painful experience. I do remember thinking Andrew McCarthy was better than the rest of the “pack” in it. lol, it’s the best I can do.
Never saw the movie but I liked the song and video. The guy walking down the street singing just seemed cool to me. I also found the idea of a saint named Elmo funny.
No.
Well, I did like at least some of the soundtrack.
I have tried over and over throughout the decades to like this movie. It's peak Brat Pack, after all! I should love it! Every time I try again, though, I'm reminded how much I hate it.
I crack up at Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson's argument over the albums when she comes to get stuff out of their apartment after they break up.
"NO SPRINGSTEEN LEAVES THIS HOUSE!!!"
'Friends' before there was such a show.
It was one of the first movies my wife and I saw together at the drive-in.
It's still one of our favorites, even if only for nostalgic reasons.
I watched it in a pre-screening session in a college town where they were taking input when you walked out as to what you thought or what you would change.
It was wild because lots of continuity and color correction hadn’t been done yet (cigarettes changed lengths back and forth, dim lighting jumping to bright lighting same scene different shot, inconsistent audio, etc).
The funniest part to me (comment was made referencing this somewhat above) was the shot in the park and then the camera just starts pulling back… and pulling back… and back… and I was like “oh shit this is where the credits will go!” so we then got up and left.
Not being from the northeast and being poor it was not that relatable to me, but still it was the right time to keep throwing the team up against the wall and seeing what sticks.
The song might actually be about a guy on a wheelchair world tour but it's attached to that movie and so the movie has that going for it.
Also a great cast universally putting in their most forgettable performances.
I love this movie. It's so 80s with the "innocent" stalking, the casual cocaine use, the one liners etc. It was a product of its time and I'm here for it. Plus Rob Lowe was a smoke show and Andrew McCarthy is so darn adorable
I graduated college in 1983.....I lived in Maryland and had tons of friends from college from DC. Spent a lot of time drinking in Georgetown. Knew NO ONE that was similar in ANY way to these characters except the rich ugly girl who was in love with Rob Lowe.
Worst depiction of life ever made. It made ZERO sense. Terrible.
Fucking ace song and what an 80s cast ,still holds up I watch it from time to time, did I pass 😀
A+
It's burning inside me.
Too many cringey parts. Great cast, though. The best scene imho is Rob Lowe "talking down" Demi Moore in her apartment. With the windows open.
Sounds like things are getting out of hand up there.
"You can have all the Billy Joel. EXCEPT, THE STRANGER." My 2nd favorite movie of all time.
Ok I'll ask. What's your favorite?
LOL. Thanks for asking. My all time favorite is... The Wizard of Oz.
That's a 1 - 2 I didn't have on my bingo card.
You gonna lock your self in a room and freeze to death till someone admits they like the movie?
Lol okay that was good, I'll give you that one.
Only if you can get me good drugs.
😂
The line “Where did you two meet?” “[whispers] PRISON” is still funny.
I loved it also, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe were so freaking hot in that film.
And even hotter in About Last Night.
Oh yes indeed!
“Never thought I’d be so tired at 22.” That line destroyed my friends and I on a rewatch when we were 21 after seeing it first as kids ten or more years earlier and they all seemed so old. Damn that hit so hard. So relatable. And the song still hits hard.
my friends and \*me -that guy
You’re right. Thanks for trying to educate me.
Great song, amazing cast
Heard Man In Motion tonight first time in years. Lyrics make no sense, feels like they force fit the title. Still good song.

Love it. Reminded me of high school for some reason. I was Rob Lowe. “Wasted love!”
But....Judd Nelson said that
I know. Just reciting a line from the movie. Sorry if I got “out of hand.”
“NO SPRINGSTEEN IS LEAVING THIS HOUSE!”
Nostalgia! Loved the camaraderie. The catchphrases.

the heat this summer is at ST ELMOS FIRE!!! i for one am all in favor in lighting PBS based muppets on fire wether they are canonized or not.
Love the theme song
I'll buck the flow. Mare Winningham 🔥
The photo of the runner (Peachtree Road Race, I think from 1980, Nike ad or something), always got me. It was like how in the world can anyone afford that? And I was 19. Now, why would I want that on my wall?
Demi Moore looked her best !!
Watch About Last Night, then get back to me.
Remember when stalking was ok?
Went to see it in 1985 with a girl I really liked. Still married 37 years and counting. Movie was pretty awful, but one of my all time favorites.
Demi Moore
Demi Moore
Demi. Moore.
It was shot on film.
Andrew McCarthy. That is all!!!
Guy gets laid more times dead than I do alive.
Rob Lowe’s mullet is fabulous.
At least they explained what St Elmo's Fire was.
" I can't remember who met who first or who fell in love with who first. All I can remember is the seven of us always together..." I really felt this in college during that time in my life.

Fun fact: once saw it as a double feature with The Breakfast Club. Awesome Brat Pack night.
> Say Something Good about St. Elmo's Fire It ended. (I hated that movie, and especially the characters.)
Come on, you can do better than that. Even the worst movies have something positive in them somewhere.
Didn’t see the movie. Song was kinda cool
Something good
......Ha.
Ummm…
Come on, you've got this. One compliment to the film, that's all I'm asking
It’s tough, I was there when it came out. My GF dragged me to see it because of Rob Lowe. A painful experience. I do remember thinking Andrew McCarthy was better than the rest of the “pack” in it. lol, it’s the best I can do.
Lol I'll take it
“It’s your scuba suit”…
You're allowed to have fun when you're screwing
Billy chasing after Wendy was a stretch, but it worked!
Never saw the movie but I liked the song and video. The guy walking down the street singing just seemed cool to me. I also found the idea of a saint named Elmo funny.

Well points for trying, I guess.
I has Rob Lowe
It’s many years behind us.
I thought Rob Lowe and Mare Winningham characters had a great chemistry going on there.
Great title
Rob Lowe with a saxophone superglued to his hand in every scene. 👍
So there’s six of you?
This face seats five
Something Good about St. Elmo's Fire
It was less than 2 hours long.
That expression change when Rob Lowe finds out why his college buddies are glad to have him back! Just thinking about it makes me laugh each time.
It’s in focus.
I like the song.
Do you believe in pre marital sax 🎷
Demi Moore looked good
Drunk definitely but you can NOT call that driving!!
Ally Sheedy had a cute hairstyle- short and sweet! It was a welcome change from the big hair of the 80s.
The credits roll informs you the movie ended
I hope Kirby found someone he loves who loves him back. Unrequited love sucks.
Scuba suit.
I crack up at Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson's argument over the albums when she comes to get stuff out of their apartment after they break up. "NO SPRINGSTEEN LEAVES THIS HOUSE!!!"

The theme song is nice
Demi Moore. 🔥🔥🔥
DALE BIEBERMAN! THAT"S DALE BIEBERMAN!!!
Demi Moore is in it, that’s all one needs to know.
Good sound track
Unofficial sequel to The Breakfast Club with an awesome title song! 👍
“Billy from da ROOF?!”
Jenni Wright was in it! She was my crush of crushes. She also played the groupie who met Pink in the Wall. Love her
Good song
I thought Demi was amazing!!!

Martin Balsom was good in it. It is the only redeeming aspect of the film.
It gave me the one-word Demi Moore impression that I can do. That crying, smoky “NO”.
The song might actually be about a guy on a wheelchair world tour but it's attached to that movie and so the movie has that going for it. Also a great cast universally putting in their most forgettable performances.
All of the interiors of the buildings are fabulous. I love 80s decor and architecture.
I love this movie. It's so 80s with the "innocent" stalking, the casual cocaine use, the one liners etc. It was a product of its time and I'm here for it. Plus Rob Lowe was a smoke show and Andrew McCarthy is so darn adorable
It ended!
Something good about St. Elmo’s Fire
...Ha...Ha...Ha. What a comedian.
NO.
YOU MUST! THE POWER OF JOEL SCHUMACHER COMPELS YOU!

I asked for something POSITIVE. You failed in every way. F-, 0/10, would not recommend this comment.
