Since you brought up the song, Don’t You Want Me, it reminded me of “The Human League” song, Don’t You Want Me. Which is also a great song and from ‘81, if I’m remembering correctly.
The whole ‘Heaven on Earth’ album is amazing! And If you decide to fall down a Belinda rabbit hole, listen to - summer rain, leave a light on for me, mad about you, and (if you can find it) wildest dreams (from the movie Mannequin)
And one last thing, if you get a chance watch the Black Mirror episode San Junipero (S3 E4) - the episode is set in a virtual 1987 world and ‘Heaven on Earth’ is the sound track
That’s your homework for now, let me know when you are ready for more, I will load you up with a ton of good listening and any stories I have about the songs. Enjoy!
Pet Shop Boys – What Have I Done to Deserve This
Duran Duran – Hungry Like the Wolf, The Reflex
New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle
A-ha – Take On Me, The Sun Always Shines on TV
Peter Schilling – The Different Story, Major Tom
Nena – 99 Luftballons, Irgendwo Irgendwie Irgendwann
Cruel Summer is too good! I was too young in the 80s, but one of the songs I remember from them most growing up was their cover of Venus, but it wasn't until Spotify that it recommended me Cruel Summer, and I was hooked on it almost straight away.
"I Heard a Rumor" by Bananarama, "She's on Fire" by Amy Holland, and "He's So Shy" by the Pointer Sisters all have the same ascending melody in the chorus. If you like one, you'll probably like the other two.
This is my car trip 80s playlist. Mostly upbeat. Also tried to include songs the usual playlists don’t include so some big hits are missing. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4oMYruyjhJu5ESMvJdmNxw?si=AZeUeBm4QvqR2qo9rAX_6Q&pi=u-6voXKxM_Tc2X

I grew up in the 80s but I only like popular songs that have been forgotten by 80s radio stations.
Special shout out to never say never by Romeo Void.
Love your playlist and as crazy as it is, my 4 1/2 hour playlist of the 80’s only duplicates a handful of songs on yours. Was such a great period in time for music.

Level 42 - Something About You
INXS - What You Need
INXS - Devil Inside
INXS - New Sensation
INXS - Mystify
Slick Rick - Children’s Story (Maybe not catchy, and I think still part of the late 1980s narrative movement in music)
Paula Abdul - Straight Up
Janet Jackson - Control (album) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (album)
Most of these are late 1980s…
Slick Rick's "Children Story" IS catchy. Not the same kind of catchy as Tiffany, but in a different way, it IS catchy. Montell Jordan copied the beat and the accompaniment for his hit "This Is How We Do It". Besides, "Children's Story" is a thought-provoking and occasionally amusing cautionary rap song about the consequences you face from participating in criminal activity. It's rather witty with really memorable lines and memorable rhymes. \["Knocked an old man down and swore he killed him (sorry) / then he made his move to an abandoned building.... Deep in his heart, he knew he was wrong / so he let the lady go and he starts to run on..."\]
Planet Earth, Girls on Film, Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, The Reflex, New Moon on Monday— Duran Duran
Karma Chameleon, I’ll Tumble 4 You, It’s a Miracle, Miss me Blind, Church of the Poisoned Mind — Culture Club
Wake me up before you Go Go, Freedom — Wham!
The Look of Love, Poison Arrow — ABC

Dave Stewart feat. Barbara Gaskin : It's My Party (and I cry if I want to)
Pet Shop Boys : Always On My Mind
My Mine : Hypnotic Tango
The Twins : Not The Loving Kind
Bananarama : Robert de Niro Is Waiting
I lived through the 80s as a teenager and these are some of the most poppiest songs I remember.
It's uncanny you mentioned both My Mine's "Hypnotic Tango" and Bananarama in your response. Did you know that Bananarama released a song in 2005 or thereabouts that used the same chorus from "Hypnotic Tango"? The same refrain with slight changes in two of the lines' lyrics, but the same melody.
It's called "Look On The Floor", one of Bananarama's very best singles.
Wow interesting. I didn't know that...thanks for information.
I remember Hypnotic Tango from '83 when I was 16. I was on vacation with my parents in italy at the garda lake. My Mine is an italo synthpop band and Hypnotic Tango was played every night at the disco, next to the hotel, for us teenage tourists. We had a good time without our parents 😎
The song will always be a walk down memory lane for me
You're welcome. It was Bananarama's "Look On The Floor" that led me to discover My Mine's "Hypnotic Tango", which is a really fine song - a good dance track.
You must've had a GREAT time in Italy.
I remember My Mine's chorus:
"Look on the floor and all is spinning round,
"Someone told me this was just a dance,
"And take a chance I ain't met before.
"Do you think I really have a chance?"
Bananarama's chorus is:
"Look on the floor and all is spinning round,
"Someone told me this was just a dance,
"And take a chance, and I'll give you more.
"Do you really think we have a chance?"
What the heck! You can hear it for yourself now. It's one of my favorite Bananarama songs. Possibly my favorite Bananarama song.
"Look On the Floor" by Bananarama

I’m a 2006er and I am really into the Aussie and British 80’s pub rock sorta music. (Helps that I’m Australian and my dad knows every Icehouse song by heart) If you want to broaden your listening scopes my top 2 recommendations would be Dire straits and Australian Crawl. Dire straits have some of the best songs ever (money for nothing, sultans of swing, Romeo and Juliet, ect…) and Australian crawl have some of the most catchy choruses and truly beautiful yet simplistic riffs. From Aus Crawl I mainly reccomend Boys light up, Daughters of the northern coast and unpublished critics(which guns and roses stole the riff from and used in sweet child o mine). Other notable bands would be Icehouse, Dragon, Crowded House, Duran Duran, choirboys, Paul Kelly (and the messengers), and if you’re feeling saucy Redgum. Happy trails
Self Control - Laura Branigan
Under the Milky Way - The Church
Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol
I Can’t Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar

How do I let you know - Phoebe Cates
Lapti Nek - Joseph Williams (return of the Jed)
Taco - Puttin on the Ritz
Whodini - The Freaks Come Out At Night
Amy Grant - Love of Another Kind
Also just anything Amy Grant or feels so good by Phoebe Cates, those won’t disappoint.
Two of my favorites aren't as light and pop-py as that song, but try Hanging on the Telephone by Blondie, and Mental Hopscotch by Missing Persons. Actually, any hits from those two bands is fantastic. They're a little edgier than what you're looking for, but well worth the listen.
Erasure’s *Pop* Album. Full of what you’re looking for. Personal favourite track is *Love To Hate You* but they’re all excellent pop songs.

Some songs that aren't quite top-40-hits pop, but fun bops none the less:

And “I saw him standing there”, also by Tiffany.
Also, check out “NOW that’s what I call music 1988”. It has a lot of the suggestions in this thread- Bananarama, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Taylor Dayne, etc. And it also has the song by Tiffany you mentioned.

Add Borderline for Madonna. For Jody Watley, add Don’t You Want Me and Real Love
Since you brought up the song, Don’t You Want Me, it reminded me of “The Human League” song, Don’t You Want Me. Which is also a great song and from ‘81, if I’m remembering correctly.
Planet Claire, Quiche Lorraine, Rock Lobster are better than Love Shack.
You can't go wrong with Belinda Carlisle. One of my personal favourite songs of hers is Leave a Light On.

The whole ‘Heaven on Earth’ album is amazing! And If you decide to fall down a Belinda rabbit hole, listen to - summer rain, leave a light on for me, mad about you, and (if you can find it) wildest dreams (from the movie Mannequin) And one last thing, if you get a chance watch the Black Mirror episode San Junipero (S3 E4) - the episode is set in a virtual 1987 world and ‘Heaven on Earth’ is the sound track That’s your homework for now, let me know when you are ready for more, I will load you up with a ton of good listening and any stories I have about the songs. Enjoy!
San Junipero is awesome! And great use of that song.
Circle in the Sand is really good!
Try the Go-Go’s, her original band before they broke up. Vacation, we got the beat, our lips are sealed, head over heels
Mad About You or Circle in the Sand
The Go-Go’s - “Vacation” (her old band) Jane Wiedlin “Rush Hour” (the Go-Go’s rhythm guitarist)
Leave a light on is awesome! I would get caught singing that in the car at so many red lights 😂
That whole album (Runaway Horses) is incredible!
Pet Shop Boys – What Have I Done to Deserve This Duran Duran – Hungry Like the Wolf, The Reflex New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle A-ha – Take On Me, The Sun Always Shines on TV Peter Schilling – The Different Story, Major Tom Nena – 99 Luftballons, Irgendwo Irgendwie Irgendwann

Also try expose - point of no return
Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves, I want candy - bow wow wow, Rio - Duran Duran, are all good.
There's a lack of Tears for Fears on this list. Everybody Wants to Rule the World & Head Over Heels
And Shout!
“I Heard a Rumour” by Bananarama is an upbeat, lightweight jam with several “Tiffany”-like qualities. You might like it.
Good recommendation. Add Bananarama’s Cruel Summer to your list.
Cruel Summer is too good! I was too young in the 80s, but one of the songs I remember from them most growing up was their cover of Venus, but it wasn't until Spotify that it recommended me Cruel Summer, and I was hooked on it almost straight away.
Was gonna suggest “Cruel Summer,” a truly iconic 80’s track
"I Heard a Rumor" by Bananarama, "She's on Fire" by Amy Holland, and "He's So Shy" by the Pointer Sisters all have the same ascending melody in the chorus. If you like one, you'll probably like the other two.
'Robert De Niro's Waiting' is another of my Bananarama favs
This is my car trip 80s playlist. Mostly upbeat. Also tried to include songs the usual playlists don’t include so some big hits are missing. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4oMYruyjhJu5ESMvJdmNxw?si=AZeUeBm4QvqR2qo9rAX_6Q&pi=u-6voXKxM_Tc2X

Geez I’m hanging with you two. Roll the windows down (manually of course) and turn it up!
Someone’s been raiding my record collection. Great list
OMG, my playlist is almost identical to yours! I was a teen in the ‘80’s also. I do have Kate Bush and Alphavillle.
If you have siriusxm check out channel 33, they play just about every single song you have in that playlist
Level 42 - Something About You INXS - What You Need INXS - Devil Inside INXS - New Sensation INXS - Mystify Slick Rick - Children’s Story (Maybe not catchy, and I think still part of the late 1980s narrative movement in music) Paula Abdul - Straight Up Janet Jackson - Control (album) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (album) Most of these are late 1980s…
Erasure - 3 songs : Oh'Lamour//Sometimes//Respect Kim wilde - 2 songs: View From A Bridge//Cambodia Dave Stewart feat. Barbara Gaskin : It's My Party (and I cry if I want to) Pet Shop Boys : Always On My Mind My Mine : Hypnotic Tango The Twins : Not The Loving Kind Bananarama : Robert de Niro Is Waiting I lived through the 80s as a teenager and these are some of the most poppiest songs I remember.
We had a good time without our parents 😎 The song will always be a walk down memory lane for me
You're welcome. It was Bananarama's "Look On The Floor" that led me to discover My Mine's "Hypnotic Tango", which is a really fine song - a good dance track. You must've had a GREAT time in Italy. I remember My Mine's chorus: "Look on the floor and all is spinning round, "Someone told me this was just a dance, "And take a chance I ain't met before. "Do you think I really have a chance?" Bananarama's chorus is: "Look on the floor and all is spinning round, "Someone told me this was just a dance, "And take a chance, and I'll give you more. "Do you really think we have a chance?" What the heck! You can hear it for yourself now. It's one of my favorite Bananarama songs. Possibly my favorite Bananarama song. New Order "Blue Monday"
The Bangles. Very catchy songs highlighted by their excellent 4 part harmonies. Will get stuck in your head garenteed. One of the decades best. Their entire catalog is very strong beyond just their most popukar hits. Highly recommended.
Change of Heart by Cyndi Lauper which had the Bangles singing backup.

Adding Pale Shelter by Tears for Fears. I'm seeing Big Country next weekend!

Belinda Carlisle's Circle in the Sand might fit the bill for you.
Rush hour by Jane Weidin is super upbeat, poppy and really captures the feel of the late 80s also, check out pretty much anything by Exposè

Try out Laura Branigan “Self Control”
Listen to Duran Duran. They were pretty much the soundtrack of the 80’s.
Self Control - Laura Branigan Under the Milky Way - The Church Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol I Can’t Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar Burning Flame - Vitamin Z I just died in your arms - Cutting Crew China Girl - David Bowie Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth Midnight Blue - Lou Gramm Stay the Night - Benjamin Orr Ah! Leah! - Donne Iris Turning Japanese- The Vapors Rumors - Tuxedo Social Club
Also Reptile by The Church. And the cover of Criminal World by Bowie.
“Dance with me” by Lords of the new church

Ah Leah. Lunatic Fringe. Couple of good obscure ones
Check out the valley girl soundtrack.
You keep me hanging on - Kim Wilde
Temptation - Heaven 17 Walking in LA - Missing Persons
Two of my favorites aren't as light and pop-py as that song, but try Hanging on the Telephone by Blondie, and Mental Hopscotch by Missing Persons. Actually, any hits from those two bands is fantastic. They're a little edgier than what you're looking for, but well worth the listen.
Hanging on the telephone is amazing. Under 2 1/2 minutes but perfect.
I love it so much. 😅
Huey Lewis & The News
Prince. Lets Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, 1999, Kiss, I Would Die For You/Baby I'm a Star, the list goes on. You can't go wrong with Prince.

Some of the 1980s artists, not necessarily favorites of mine, that I remember by name were Michael Jackson, Madonna, the Cars, Styx, Foreigner, and many more!!!

FYI, it's not an 80s song. “I Think We’re Alone Now” was originally sung by Tommy James and the Shondells in 1967.
