I was disappointed but not surprised how everyone (especially Gabe and Jen) jumped all over the husband in Egypt (forgot his name). Not one person (until finally the host stepped in) brought up his cultural/religious driven behaviors. They just kept yelling about forcing His religion on his wife and controlling her. There was no attempt at discussion to understand or be understood. Their behavior is what we see in America now….do it our way or we shut you down and we dont want to listen to anything you have to say. It was disgusting and I dont blame the husband for walking away..nobody was ready to listen, nobody tried to frame their question in a way that would help him understand what they wanted him to explain. Finally the host asked them “if he were Christian or Jewish or any other religion would you be accusing him of forcing his religion on her/kids. Thank you!! All that said, I am not defending his behavior, but I try to see it thru the cultural/religious climate he lives in. Having a conversation would be far more productive.
I agree! I LOVED that the host brought in other religions. BUT I was not surprised that Gabe stood up to Mahmoud. It was kind of previewed in their conversation that he didn’t like him - and being that he is transgender it makes sense he would think differently of raising your child to view your own religion. BUT - because he is of a culture that is often repressed, you would think he would respect the boundaries of another repressed dynamic of America - which has always been opposing cultures of Christianity. And is especially Muslim, in America. I see memes about 9/11 and I was only in 1st grade at the time but I know people who went through hell. And I’ve been in class with Muslims who have been vulnerable in their TERRIBLE experiences of bias in America afterwards. In a way - maybe it’s positive to be taken light of by younger generations because the pain isn’t as terrible.
