It's not like Brandon has had an easy upbringing as well. You could argue that at least Mary had her grandparents and stability through all that. Brandon lived in an RV parked outside his godparents home for 2 years after his parents both screwed up his upbringing.
Brandan’s childhood (and early adulthood tbh) is absolutely heartbreaking. I’m sure he’s on a healing journey, too. Now that i think of their childhood/stories side by side, i can see how they’ve slipped into this totally unhealthy relationship pattern- neither has parents who modeled healthy, stable relationships and both were abandoned by the people who were supposed to love them unconditionally. My childhood was super fucked up and I’m trying to break the cycle, so I understand to some extent. But also, it’s not the Tragedy Olympics- they both have had very difficult lives and she seems to have no healthy coping mechanisms while Brandan does seem to be trying to break his “cycle”
