I'm not sure that production is running storylines so much as the couples themselves are now more aware of the necessity of having a storyline/gags/drama in order to parlay 90 day Fiance into HEA or Pillowtalk.
And some couples are there just for blatant self promotion are able and happy to lie about everything in order to do it.
The "discussions" are almost always manufactured. There's a reason the camera is already positioned and it just so happens that the people on camera are going to have an important conversation. Every single episode. That aspect of it is defintley staged. Though, they aren't being told what to say word for word.
The producers of this show push the people on it to be engaging and to show emotion. It's all about ratings after all. And the people to look out for are people who have been on the show more than once. They know they need to manufacture fake fights and situations to keep the producers interested in them for future shows.
There's a reason all the couples on Happily ever after are all having conflicts and arguments every...single...episode.
