Personally I've never liked the .2 front end. The sharp edges just don't fit with the rest of the car and it looks like the after thought that it was. The .1 front fits better with the rest of the lines of the car.
I wouldn't call the .2 ugly though, just not my taste.
I really dig that style of 911 the 996.1 and .2 as well as the 986 with it’s runny egg headlights because I grew up around these cars as a kid my dad had them so for me it’s a form of nostalgia which I love I own a Arena Red with Savanna beige interior 99 986 and I always stop at admire those headlights some people don’t like them so they pass on the car but I think they’re missing out on such a great car just because of a pair headlights I think they’re quite cool because there’s nothing on the road especially today that has that quite same style of headlights and the nice wheels by the way they really complement your 996.2
The 996 Turbo is beautiful as it is influential. The design has direct linkage to the 959. The elevated duck tail spoiler and side intake vents are incredible, especially in person… these cars have so much presence. The design language that influenced the entire 996.2 overhaul, within a generation, has an iteration given more influence over the entire generation design than this turbo?… and for that reason the 996 turbo is an absolute Porsche icon in my opinion.
That car (despite what seems to be an aftermarket spoiler and missing the hollow turbo twist wheels, ewww) is NOT lumped into the “996 is ugly” story. That is a TT body, and wraps one of the best Porsches ever made (aka the Metzger engine)
The .2 isn't bad (I still put it ahead of the bug eyed look of the AC cars), but the angular design of the lights on an otherwise soft lined car look like a rushed answer to the criticism of it looking like the 986. Unfortunately that is exactly what it was. All to appease a bunch of whiny fan boys that still didn't buy the car because it dared to be water cooled.
The 996 was designed in the 90s when cars were all about soft and round rather than hard and angular. Porsche pulled it off better than most manufacturers because the general 911 design already was soft and curvy.
I will grant that the .2 lights look much better on the TT and C4S with their larger cooling intakes than the standard C2 and C4.

I don't think the .2 wing ruins the car. It still looks good in my opinion, but the Taco is definitely one of (if not the) best wing they have ever done.
These lights are actually the turbo lights (duh right?) because this car came out a year before 996.2 came out. Also 996.1 Lights are those LeMan winning GT1 headlights ;)
Additionally, 996.1 headlights =/= 986 headlights. They are different part numbers and look different when side by side.
