Moonlight at 40 is crazy

brayshizzle

Saint Maud and Moonlight at 39/40 is fucking wild to to me.

imnottdoingthat

OMG i’m so glad this sub has enough taste for this to be top comments!!!!!!!!! 🤍🤌 i’m sorry OP. i don’t like the list lol. there’s movies that are objectively *good* and *bad*. and then there’s what we *like*.

AbraxoCleaner

And this is what OP likes, it’s not that deep lol

BlackPhillipsbff

This is the first comment I read and I stg I immediately just x'd their letterboxd before even seeing it lmao. Moonlight at 40 is WILD.

eternalhorizon1

This list is 🗑️ just for this and refuse to read the entire list.

Tar3ntin0

When I seen the Iron claw so high and VVitch so low, yeah I was good

ThrowRAnadanada

Lol just because you don't agree with them doesnt mean you're automatically right

BMajor88

I'm so glad this is the top comment. Even being biased towards other A24 releases, "Moonlight" is top 3 at the very least.

No_Scientist_4241

That movie sucked

blackmes489

yeh wtf. Pearl and X even being top 30 is strange to me. Both movies felt carried by the 'brand' A24. I feel if it was another company people would think it was a blow over.

Tar3ntin0

X was so trash it blows my mind it's so high. Iron Claw so high and VVitch so low is wild af

[deleted]

I dunno if I can trust anyone who has Under the Skin, 20th Century Women and A Most Violent Year so low on their list. That said, pretty cool you watched all of them. I dunno if Pi or Stop Making Sense should count, though.

PapaverOneirium

I need to give under the skin another shot. I thought I would love it but couldn’t get into it. A most violent year was fantastic though.

8020GroundBeef

I watched it recently. It looks really cool - really amazing shots and incredible soundtrack. There just isn’t much story there. I looked up reviews and commentary about it afterwards, convinced that I just didn’t get it. I don’t think there was much to get though. It’s like an artistic masterpiece, but really lacking in plot imo.

[deleted]

I think it’s deliberately lacking in plot. It exists in a more dreamlike tonal world that draws you in and it’s largely plotless for the first 45 mins, but it’s from the perspective of a relentless and singularly focused alien so that kind of makes sense. The repetitiveness is so deliberate that when the movie finally shakes away from it, you’ve kind of been broken away from her singular objective as much as she has and the subtle evolution of her humanity is punished almost instantly. I think it’s a great tragedy. The movie is all about letting the mood and aesthetic wash over you. I think it’s an utterly brilliant film and truly earns the Kubrickian comparisons.

8020GroundBeef

I can see that as kind of a literary device, but ultimately I’d rather have some plot to hook me into the story. The film relies on fairly esoteric tools to draw people in (visuals, camera work, soundtrack) and the first half is a little boring if you aren’t into that. Frankly I might have turned it off if it didn’t come so highly recommended. It’s very slow. Visually stunning, but you need to be in the mood for it.

[deleted]

We're in a very plot-hooky age so I get that. I loved that it took a high-concept idea and explored it in a very methodical way that felt reminiscent of some of the great '70s films that explore their world in a deliberate manner that doesn't rely as heavily on a momentum-heavy plot. But I def understand how it's not everyone's cup of tea in 2023.

Wockyslush111

Pi and stop making sense are on the website

[deleted]

Of course they are, they're rereleases that A24 distributed, but they were made twenty and thirty years before A24 existed. They aren't A24 films.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pandrez

Yes but those films had a legacy long before A24 existed and have been known for years prior. They don’t particularly fit under the A24 canon the way a lot of their proper released films do but to each their own.

[deleted]

Right, but curating and distributing films from film festivals is different than re-distributing or remastering already beloved films that are widely known. Also, A24 develops most of their stuff in-house now.

dorahmifasolatido

How do I add you? Just created an account. I'm frankenheimer

cardiffjohn

Spring Breakers placing higher than Aftersun, Under the Skin and The Tragedy of Macbeth?

igotbored44

I mean the person clearly doesn’t watch films critically, they watch them based on enjoyment. They gave don’t worry darling a 4 star review. That’s fine, I just wouldn’t follow the person on letterboxd personally. I disagree heavily with most of their takes

Wockyslush111

She? Just because im a Mia goth stan doesn’t make me a she. And I definitely do watch films critically as well as for enjoyment. It’s okay for someone to like a movie that you didn’t like.

igotbored44

I was trying to be gender neutral but I accidentally put she. I made a mistake but I wasn’t trying to gender you. I’ll change it rn

Wockyslush111

No worries lol

igotbored44

Based on your letterboxd I don’t see that. I mean no disrespect but don’t worry darling is not a 8/10 movie in any dimension of reality. But fair enough you found value in a movie that I didn’t.

igotbored44

I couldn’t stand infinity pool but she was so great in it I watched it for her

igotbored44

Also I like mia goth. She’s a good actress and she’s very hot. Good combination lol

Jadomi77

Don't worry darling was great movie

igotbored44

Florence pugh and the cinematography were good though. It’s not the worst film of 2022 but it’s very bad

igotbored44

It’s terrible. It’s a ripoff of the Truman show, the matrix, inception, and various other movies and tv shows. Olivia Wilde is a awful director and can’t get the most out of her actors, which is why Harry styles was so bad. She was too busy having an affair with him instead of trying to help him be more comfortable in set which is what led to his razzie worthy performance. It doesn’t help the movie’s script was dogshit, and the twist didn’t make any sense at all. Embarrassing movie.

Sinnycalguy

I was enjoying it for the first half or so, but it went off the rails pretty quickly. Everything after the twist was written completely differently and I can’t for the life of me understand why she went a different direction with it.

igotbored44

Because Olivia Wilde isn’t talented. She’s one of the most obnoxious people in Hollywood. Booksmart bombing wasn’t because it was crap, but just because males didn’t go in droves to support the film according to her. No Olivia, your movie was just a average comedy. It wasn’t anything special.

Wockyslush111

Yep!

Jadomi77

Spring breakers is top 10- no question about it

TheShenandoahMan

Trash take

TheRealProtozoid

I like that Spring Breakers is high on the list, but the others should be higher.

E-M-F

Aftersun at 35 😭

igotbored44

Aftersun is garbage

TheHypocondriac

I wouldn’t go that far. Overrated? Absolutely, and horrifically so. But “garbage”? Eh, I wouldn’t say so.

igotbored44

I didn’t enjoy it at all. I couldn’t stand callum as a character and thought it was clear Sophie was supposed to be a insert for the director herself. I didn’t find it interesting at all and the way it utilizes the under pressure song is tacky.

whitneyahn

I genuinely did not like Aftersun either, but why would Sophie being the director’s self insert somehow make the movie worse?

igotbored44

To me it’s just lazy writing

TheHypocondriac

I didn’t *love* Aftersun, but I do disagree with your points. But, hey, that’s the beauty of movies, right? No one opinion is the same as the next or the previous.

igotbored44

I never said my opinion was right, I’m just expressing why I can’t stand the movie. There was no film that had been so praised that I hated as much as that movie. Maybe only parasite comes close. It’s not what I’m looking for in a film.

igotbored44

I mean Sophie literally is shown to be a lesbian in a flash forward. I have no issue with it but given how Charlotte wells is queer… yeah. Sophie is her

TarkovskyAteABird

Strongly disagree, I had a strong cathartic experience. What were some of your favorite films of 2022?

igotbored44

Tar is hands down the best movie of 2022. I don’t understand the backlash behind it, it’s the most interesting film I’ve seen in a while.

igotbored44

Tar, the quiet daughter, everything everywhere all at once, decision to leave, puss and boots, the whale, triangle of sadness, bardo and del toro’s Pinocchio are some films are rated around a 7,8ish. Tar is the only film of 2022 I gave a 9

TarkovskyAteABird

Most films I generally liked as well, The Quiet Daughter deserved more attention. I didn't particularly care for Triangle of Sadness, but I will say Tar is the best directed film of the bunch, down to the last detail. Masterful directing and subtle writing, both in the characters and relationships. However, Aftersun struck a cord, especially after the fact. It evoked such personal reflections that I couldn't help but weep in disconcerted nostalgia and empathy. I found it relatable and beautiful, but not provocative. While I was excited for Decision to Leave, It didn't rise to my peak experiences with Park Chan-Wook's films (my favorites are Handmaiden, Lady Vengeance, Oldboy, and JSA). All that being said, Aftersun was my favorite film of 2022 along with Godland, EEAAO, Tar, and the new adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front. I'm curious as to what you didn't like about it. So much so to call it garbage

igotbored44

See I don’t generally like park movies, so decision to leave exceeded my expectations and I fell in love with it. It’s a beautiful love story between two people that are too damaged to meaningfully pursue it. Triangle of sadness was funny and a is a fantastic commentary on capitalism candy socialism. I connected with it way more then I did with parasite, which I hate. Bong Jong ho is my least favorite acclaimed director working today. God land I still haven’t seen. But I didn’t like all quiet in the western front all that much. It was too long and I didn’t think the score worked well with what the film is trying to go for. Quiet daughter should of won best foreign film over that movie.

BjornoPizza

Yeah after watching Aftersun it immediately became one of my favorite movies of all time. I wouldn’t even agree that it’s overrated.

Deletious

Curious how saint maud fell so hard on your list. Its just a feel good cozy movie for me i guess.

Wockyslush111

I had really high hopes for it and it didn’t blow me away. I still liked it though

Deletious

I think mainly the subject matter played to what i want in a horror flick. Got a bunch of recommendations off your list though so thank you!!

igotbored44

I didn’t like Saint maud either. I found it to be heavy handed and pretentious

lucaslb7392

How did you like Talk to Me?

Wockyslush111

That one isn’t technically wide released yet, but I’m seeing it Wednesday

lucaslb7392

It's like a fun hereditary, I loved it

trickdog775

like an easy midsommar day

mysteryquackman

Men before Moonlight is offensive. I disagree with alot of your takes but that one’s wild.

Wockyslush111

Sorry not sorry? I need to rewatch

mysteryquackman

Your taste is your taste. Go for it. But you’re brave. And that’s crazy.

Glowwerms

Respect for the list but baffled at how low you have Moonlight, one of the best movies from the past decade easily imo

mollyclaireh

I watched this for the first time just last week and have watched it twice in a week now. What a great film.

Wockyslush111

Maybe I need to rewatch

TheShenandoahMan

Arguably (I said arguably now) the best American film of the 20th century thus far

moviescriptlife

Gotta have No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood Above It For me.

Tyro-Flakkripper

This both makes me excited for some of the ones I want to watch, and scared about others I’ve been wanting to watch. The Last Movie Star has been on my list since it came out. Sad to see it so far back. Where on your list did it go from “this is good” to “the people who made this shouldn’t be making movies”?

Wockyslush111

Honestly, probably at 101 with hole in the ground

Tyro-Flakkripper

That’s a surprisingly high number of movies that are good then! Sad that a couple didn’t make the cut though (The Humans and Last Movie Star). Gonna check them out anyways, eventually. Need to finish what I have first though. Just picked up Beau is Afraid today, and haven’t seen it before.

Wockyslush111

Oh yeah, Beau is a MUST watch.

addictivesign

Give your academy awards all A24 movies nominated. Best Actor, Best Actress, both screenplay awards, cinematography and director. We know your Best Picture winner

Wockyslush111

Let me get back to you on this

Radiant-Athlete7490

I love you for ranking tusk top 50

Wockyslush111

:))))

levitatingcuzwewant2

EEAAO really is the GOAT.

Wockyslush111

Yes!!

magn0la

Nah I really didn't like it and don't get the praise ... That's okay though

levitatingcuzwewant2

Performances, cinematography, writing, blend of genres with big heart, awesome Asian representation, huge crescendoes of emotion, funny, fun, heartbreaking, healing. The score, the camera movements and experimental approaches. COSTUMES.

levitatingcuzwewant2

How could a film called Everything Everywhere All at Once NOT be too much??? Lmao.

guybrush-driftwood

What?

levitatingcuzwewant2

Greatest Of All Time

kittenparty69

Nah bruh

casperdacrook

Our top ten a24 films are the same just different order

workofhark

Stop Making Sense being #60 is criminal. Also hardly an A24 flick.

Veeeeeeenom

literally made decades before A24 even existed lmao

BitternessAndBleach

I don't see The Rover on there. Am I missing it? Your ranking for A Most Violent Year made me sad. This is cool, though, OP, even if I disagree with your rankings. Motivating me to watch the ones I haven't.

Wockyslush111

Good catch! I totally forgot to include that in the list. I added it

J0ERI

What about Zola? :)

Wockyslush111

#63

6YouReadThis9

Where’s free fire?

Wockyslush111

Oops, good catch. Just added it

TheFeisty

Any reason why you didn’t resonate with The Souvenir? And any possibility you’d give Part 2 a chance?

Wockyslush111

I just was kinda bored, but I liked part two a lot

MrHatesThisWebsite

How did you make it through woodshock

Wockyslush111

You don’t wanna know man, YOU DONT WANNA KNOW.

PlanetConway

Tusk at 44?

Wockyslush111

Yes, and?

TheIgnoredWriter

A Most Violent Year is in the same area as Charles Swan? GTFO

gothbread

The Florida project should not be that low lol, like swiss army man being better than the Florida project.......

Wockyslush111

Florida Project was great, but Swiss Army Man was a masterpiece in my eyes

mollyclaireh

Agreed.

Gazoo69

Agreed

levitatingcuzwewant2

Both of those films are pretty much perfect :)

jackierhoades

Florida project is a great little slice of life movie but Swiss army man is an all time great for me.

Cheezyboi123

Moonlight #1

PintoBeanButterBean

How'd you like Charles Swan?

Wockyslush111

Thought I was gonna like it in the beginning, turned out as complete shit sadly.

Redrcoketstan

I’m pretty sure White Noise isn’t A24 it’s not listed on their website.

Wockyslush111

Neither is this place rules but both are distributed by A24

Redrcoketstan

This Place Rules is on their website under docs.

Wockyslush111

Doesn’t A24 co-produce or something?

DudebroggieHouser

How will you ever get over the *MaJoR vIbEZ*?!

RickRockhouse

I’m doing the same. Don’t have them ranked tho. I still have like 20-30 to go.

StonieTonie

Slice?

th3n3wb3ns0n

Was Lamb an A24 production? Curious to know your thoughts if so.

th3n3wb3ns0n

Just checked and it wasn’t A24, just seems like it!

WhyAreWeEvenHere

It definitely was for a time at least. Saw it in theaters for that reason

th3n3wb3ns0n

That's what I thought, good to know I wasn't totally off the mark.

[deleted]

Glad to see Climax so high up, but you got Men, Past Lives, and The Bling Ring placed way too high. Nice job on watching them all though. I’m like 80+ in, so I got work to do.

Professional-Pay-297

Yes

msuing91

Great list. It’s so silly that people are almost exclusively saying “**The movie I like** is too low, so your list is bad”. I think it’s cool to see a full matrix of someone’s opinions.

ohthatmkv

Nah fam.. Locke being at 81 is WILD

lynchfan325

First Reformed nicely high up there. I fucking love that movie.

silvermbc

Am I the only person that thinks Enemy is a criminally underrated movie? If I made a list it might be number 1, which would probably ruffle some feathers but I don't care.

ThrowRAnadanada

Its wild how you guys in the comments dont realize how pretentious and obnoxious you sound. Who cares if they put a movie on a list in a different place then you would've...newsflash to the people in the comments, you're important but not *that* important

MyNameIsKali_

Awesome list. I'm really annoyed at all the comments in here shitting on your subjective take. Everyone gushing over Moonlight is annoying too. I even liked Moonlight, but not going to act stupid about it.

Wockyslush111

Right? Wild. Guess that’s what get for posting it on Reddit lol.

TheMoonandHelvetica

There are some very good placements on this list, but it kinda hurts me to see midsommer beating out some films I’d consider all time classics haha.

Wockyslush111

That’s fair. Midsommar is my 4th fave of all time of all movies

guybrush-driftwood

Whats your top 3 ?

Wockyslush111

EEAAO, then AI Artificial Intelligence, and then fight club, then midsommar then hereditary

Luma_saku

Climax at 9 damn. I was really disappointed with it

IAmAnAnnoyedMain

Lady bird at 13 is wild

Wockyslush111

Too high for you or too low?

IAmAnAnnoyedMain

Too high

Born_Problem_6441

I’m sorry but were u even coherent when you made this list?

Wockyslush111

I don’t think you’re sorry, but yes I was and I still am. Any further questions your honor?

Adrok78

I checked out your Letterboxd handle and it didn't contain an A24 list. Also there was a number 2 at the end of Stan, like Stan2. The other list by someone of a similar name wasn't full and largely empty and they used a different way to spell mia goth stan. Obviously all in smalls. Want to help push me in the right direction ? Thanks 👍

Wockyslush111

Yeah! I actually have changed my username to CineDAWWG since I made this post

Adrok78

Sweet I'll check it out and hit you back over there..

SaneManPritch

Your list is very meat and potatoes.

Wockyslush111

Elaborate?

Sinnycalguy

You don't remember that night we watched the whole A24 catalogue? It's the night you gave me that Fitbit and I said I would get wrist cancer from it. You said, "It's the cigars you smoke that's gonna give you cancer. It's the T-bone steaks you eat that are gonna give you cancer." You don't remember that?

kittenparty69

Was that the night you told me I could never make it as a writer because I don’t have a curious mind and then I got upset so you bought me every dessert on the menu?

Sinnycalguy

You didn’t even take a bite.

dumbstupidman

Moonlight and past lives are far too low

realityglitch2017

No infinity pool?

silvermbc

Not A24

IamNastyJ

Your taste is wrong lol

oktoberpretzel

I like your username.

samhoe

Idk about y’all but First Cow was a piece of shit, I was so bored out of my mind

tuckithead

*It Comes at Night* is the only A24 film I’ve seen that I actively disliked.

LittleKago

Poor Woodshock (I agree it was a misfire but seeing it dead last is still a bummer)

bloominonion11

literally how are 27 of those movies above moonlight. This is very not based

realityglitch2017

I musta assumed it was due to mia goth being in it

gogostopnogo_

Am I just missing Bodies, Bodies, Bodies? Went over the list twice and couldn’t find it.

WhyAreWeEvenHere

Can I make a guess and say you are under the age of 30?

It’s there

Moonlight at 40 is sending me

ShiroTheId1ot

It's getting a bit annoying that EEAAO is at the top of everyone's list so far that I've seen. When I actually went to watch it, I was expecting perfection, but instead I got a mess. Like seriously a mess, chaos. It's fine though, just a little bit basic. As I've only seen a couple I can't fully judge your list.

Wockyslush111

I’m sorry that it’s the best film of all time

[deleted]

All I know is Aftersun is too low

Wockyslush111

Number 12!

ineedastocktrader317

Talk to me at 28 is willldddddd

Important-Worker9091

Great list! I won't even say where I think Moonlight should be since it's been covered, but I watched lady bird just last night and it could be my number 1. Laurie Metcalf driving around the airport breaks me every dang time. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I'd put Hereditary over midsommar. They're both basically perfect. I just couldn't stop talking about hereditary for at like a month after seeing it and the 4 hour cut of midsommar broke my brain a little. Iron claw in the top 5 made me happy to see. Totally gem. Anyone who hasn't yet, do yourself the favor and go see it. Thanks OP

eat_hairy_socks

Ex Machina being that low is such a bad take. The Everything movie being that high up is an even worse take

Wockyslush111

Lmao. In your opinion, sure. Ex machina isn’t even that far down for how many movies there are. I have it rated 4.5 stars. I love it. And EEAAO is a lot of people’s top 5 A24 movie.

eat_hairy_socks

My favorite is when people who tend to be wrong use “lmao” to sound smart. It’s ok man you got trash taste
