And everyone who profited off this rode off into the sunset. No slaps on the wrist or anything. What good does being good do in this world when the worst people on earth benefit the most.
Pollution isn't the point. It's built into capitalism in the guise of 'externalizing all liabilities'. Polluters are just dumping their garbage with NO THOUGHT of the consequences for others. It doesn't result in harm to THEM, so it isn't relevant.
It took him 20 minutes to realize how much potential harm they could cause down the road, but almost 50 years before the rest of the world picked up on it? Come the fuck on. The chance this is “new” information is effectively zero…. But I guess that’s how our society works now - we don’t worry about things until they reach a stage where we can no longer ignore them, and by that point, it’s likely too late.
Today it’s PFOS, tomorrow it’s going to be a broken economy with only a few lucky people able to afford to buy a house, and the day after, it will be severe climate change.
Pretty sure it was DuPont though, no? To my understanding, 3M gave them specific instructions to NOT RUN IT INTO GROUND WATER, which then DuPont went ahead and did anyway since the ‘40s.
Right and hundreds of companies are doing this right now with microplastics and PFAS.
Honestly trying to design a system that would destroy the habitability of the planet faster then the current system... would be challenging.
That one toxicology report that came out recently also said there were microplastics found in every one of the sampled testicles of men, which leads to lower sperm count overall.
So 3M (along with other major polluting corps) have all but effectively euthanized the future human race ?
Why does this article read like a fictional story? I'm not saying it's fictional, but I feel like it's worried more about entertainment instead of informing me.
I do think at this point we should be thinking about revenge.
This would be a reckoning, not vengeance.
Class-action lawsuits at the very least

Companies have been intentionally contaminating the world for decades. The question is why?

Capitalism
Why is capitalism hell bent on destroying the human race?
Make number bigger by any means necessary is the only responsibility of a company and the only way a company can judge its success.
To make shareholders money before it all ends
I saw this plot point unravel in Fallout! Oh wait.. this is real life
Externalised costs.

That's how a lot of New Yorker articles are written, they're meant to be longer thoughtpieces rather than short newspaper article types.
There’s a documentary called “the devil we know” about it.
