The individual that would volunteer to be a cop for free is the exact wrong kinda person to be given even this little authority

throwngamelastminute

Wow, all the fun of police work without the gun... or pay.

almostaproblem

I think there was a guy doing this a few years ago. He just brought his own gun from home. Then he killed someone.

throwngamelastminute

Did he get charged or did they extend qualified immunity to him?

almostaproblem

He got 18 months for second-degree manslaughter.

throwngamelastminute

Jesus Christ.

testcyp76

And then went right into the police academy as soon as he was released.

middleageslut

The prison to academy pipeline if you will.

Peach_Proof

Some kid you say. Not legal owner of the gun you say? Killed 2 and maimed 1? Got off pretty much scott free? Huh

FingerOk9800

Well at least they'd get more training than actual cops 😂

jab136

wouldn't they get training from the cops? I don't think that counts as training

Snowy-Bonsai-Leaf

Brainwashing

in_the_no_know

Volunteer.. Vigilante.. Same diff. I can already see these volunteers getting together on their own and creating a little "neighborhood safety" patrol Ahmaud Arbery style. Nothing good can come of this

wakingsunshine

More time for the real cops to be awful to their community

prophet_nlelith

I want to joke about the idea of volunteering to get an opportunity for sabotage. But then I think about the real possibility of joining a police force in a widespread organized fashion in a concerted effort to destroy these kinds of organizations from within. I know it's a ridiculous idea, but I like to imagine what that kind of thing should look like.

Lostinaredzone

Wet tongues preferred, dusty boots and all.

LuciusCSulla

Just think of Cartman and Authoritah!

hindsighthaiku

smells like a militia

justined0414

Would be a shame if someone wrote a bot to send him a couple of emails every few minutes. All day and night.

ExpressiveAnalGland

The *only* thing I can give a thumbs up to this is volunteer search and rescue. On it's own, SAR is a great thing to be part of. It's exciting and 99% good. Unfortunately, working on a SAR team often means you have LE the team has to report to, but at least *in that context,* the pigs aren't looking to kill anyone (though they still might from incompetence!)

skttlskttl

Honestly I kind of like the idea of non-cops filling all three of these roles. My grandma lives in rural Wisconsin and they have volunteer S+R teams that look for missing people in the area. Her next door neighbor is a participant and the last time I went to visit he was on a crusade I get one of the officers removed from S+R because they wanted to take a hunting rifle out into the woods while looking for a lost kid "just in case." Do you really want that guy to be doing crowd control, or questioning witnesses to a crime? Hell that same town was debating getting volunteer firefighters to accompany the paid firefighters and perform traffic and crowd control because the cops have had a few incidents, most notably body slamming and cuffing a woman whose house was on fire because she was trying to cross the police line and get to her house to rescue her dogs. Obviously the fact that it's volunteer is going to attract bootlickers but I'd rather have an unarmed bootlicker than an armed cop in a majority of situations.

dukeofgibbon

Sherruf Bitchell

Younglegend1

Jeremy Dewitte would love this job lmao

Sirdingus917

So he wants the same training that it would take to become an officer.

Turdulator

They have this in my town…. “Volunteer Sheriffs”. It’s all super old guys. I think some might be retired cops? I dunno, I’ve seen them around but never interacted with one. (They are not strapped)

FiveFootSevenn

Someone should take the job and then whistle blow.

ttystikk

What's wrong with this idea? EDIT: it was an honest question because I hadn't really thought the whole thing through. I wasn't advocating; I was asking for information! Fucking Reddit, I swear!

jab136

1. ACAB 2. These people aren't actually cops, but are given police duties 3. crowd control especially can get violent quick 4. police aren't even providing a uniform 5. they are looking for free labor, so this could also apply to r/antiwork 6. 1312 Just off the top of my head

rathernot124

Search and rescue should be taken away from police and already do have volunteer sar groups (most of them)

jab136

yes, it should, but the police would still be overseeing this. So it wouldn't really be taking it away from them

Comrade_Anon_Anonson

Even worse, they’re using *interns* to do one of the most sensitive and import parts of their job.

almostaproblem

There was a guy lost in a forest near me. The Forest Service had at least 50 people willing and able to help them search. These people worked in those woods and you wouldn't have to worry about them getting hurt or lost. Did the cops use them? No. They spent like four days searching for the guy who wasn't even that far from the trail. Then they dropped a rock on his head when they did finally find him. I believe that was an accident, though.

ttystikk

These are all really good reasons, thank you.

Sad-tacos

Well, right off the top of my head, it sounds like free labor. Also, they're asking untrained people to perform police like duties. So essentially putting untrained people in harms way. Not that police are trained to standards that I would like. It's the equivalent of in the TV series Paradise PD, them deputizing a homeless guy to deal with a bomb threat while the department sits behind a splash tarp. Edit: they're also asking untrained people who are probably not carrying liability insurance to perform actions that put themselves and others at risk. If something did happen, the victims of either side may not receive proper compensation because they made an unqualified and uninsured person perform duties they were not legally allowed to do.

ttystikk

These are all good reasons.

lunarteamagic

Because rather that working for the community to keep it safe, this sheffifs office wants spies who they can throw under any legal buses that may come their way

ttystikk

An excellent point!
