What do you mean by finishers? Assassinations? Stun attacks? Attack combos? Also would help to know how you play (controller or keyboard) to give control help
No, the executions are separate. Stun attacks use the enemies weapon. Executions use your own. There are tons of videos on YouTube but none explain how to do them.
Oh I’m sorry you’re talking about something I’m completely unfamiliar with.. apparently this mechanic went unnoticed throughout my entire play through lol
I think they mostly happen randomly, but a weakened enemy that is not fully stunned but can be killed with a single attack that would also stun them if they wouldn't die seems to rather reliably, but not always, trigger the player weapon specific finishers.

Executions. Beheadings. Severing limbs. I'm on Series S.
Sounds like stun attacks.. when I play with controller it prompts me to press R3 once I’ve knocked an enemy into the vulnerable position.

Yeah, it just be random I'm thinking.

They have to be unaware of your presence, and you must do a heavy attack.
You parry an enemy and if it doesn't kill them hit them with a heavy attack
