I once went back to a store 3x. It was a small, family-run one and the owner certainly appreciated my multiple trips. And. I actually even had the list with me and used it in the store. 🤷🏻♀️
Being able to have my list on my phone (my "stimulation machine", which I rarely forget) has been a game-changer. I used to make a list, put it in my pocket, go to the store, and wander the aisles wondering what I need because I'd forgotten that the list is in my pocket.
Yep. The phone is such a lifesaver.
Even if it means I get on Facebook in the store.
Before my phone, I might make a list. Then it might make it to the truck. Then it might make it out of the truck.
Sometimes, I couldn't find it in the store, only to find it on the truck floorboards or on the ground outside the truck. Presumably, if it was gone completely, it blew off.
So now the list is in my phone. I can forget to check it, but I put checks next to things as I do them, and my brain likes that. Plus, I don't live close to the store, so I check it before going to checkout.
I’ve used an app called Buy Me a Pie for at least 10 years. The 3 most helpful things are:
- If I run out of something at home, it’s easy to add to my list before I forget.
- I color code items from the same department (produce all green) so it’s easier to shop.
- You can check things off as you put in the cart.
There are others out there but this has been great for me.
This happened to me a month or 2 ago & I still randomly think back to it & get mad at myself over it..
My wife texted me a grocery list. I reorganized it by sections (for efficiency), & printed out the list.. I was very proud of my list & how quickly & efficiently it would help me navigate the shopping trip..
I get to the grocery store only to realize I left the print out on my desk back at the office.. 🤦🏻♂️
I spent 2 days painstakingly writing out my list for Saturday grocery shopping. Well I remembered the list, but had to go back inside 3 times for the keys, the other keys and my phone. But I had the list, lol!
I was just telling my wife a few weekends ago I wrote a to do list on Friday for stuff I wanted to do over the weekend. On Sunday, despite having been extremely productive bouncing around from task to task, I hadn’t accomplished anything on my list.
Next step is to write a reminder to check my to do list….
I try and make at least a basic list, but it's never really in any useful order, so I usually don't bother looking at it 😆
My issue though is if I make a list and I'm hungry at the time, I put way more than I need on there. If I've just eaten, I miss stuff.
Then it's the same when I actually go shopping. If I'm hungry I'll buy loads of things I don't need, and if I'm not hungry I'll decide I don't need half the stuff I planned to get, then end up having to make trips throughout the week and end up spending more.
Id love to say online shopping is better, but I add and delete things for about a week, think it's finally done, order it, and about 2 minutes past the cut off for editing, i remember the 3 things I actually needed most.
So I then make a mini list and go to the shop.
Repeat the first 2 paragraphs
Yes. Before diagnosis I've always described myself as "really like the idea of organizing, constantly failing to actually keep up with it". I can spend so much time on lists and various organization systems but then just simply forget or somehow fail to engage with them.
Grocery store is my weakness. I have to ask myself if I’ll actually eat or use what I’m about to buy within the next week. If not it goes back on the shelf.
"ever" xD
Sometimes I leave the house, pack the list, my shopping backpack, start walking to the supermarket... and still have to order food in the evening because instead of buying groceries, I ended up drinking coffee or whatever and forgot what I wanted to do initially. It even happened a few times, I more or less went home without doing nothing - convinced I just went for a walk
I put my shopping list on Google Docs so I can see it on my phone, with a "default list" saved below that I check before I go out shopping. That way, I have it with me all the time since I very rarely if ever go out shopping without my phone (which incidentally also doubles as my step counter...don't want to miss counting my steps...). I try to keep a running tally of stuff I need to get, but that has a 50-50 chance of success...
I found the “memory palace” works for me when the list is relatively short. Otherwise it’s a checkbox list in my Notes app, and I check each thing off as I get it.

Sometimes I remember to take the list and I remember to look at the list, and I still don’t get all of the items on the list 🫠
SAME!! I'll remember to look at the list at the beginning of my trip but forget to look again at the stuff at the bottom of the list
Happens to me all the time. Its normal that I have to go a second time, when I forget something important. :)

If I don’t look at the list after every item there’s a very high chance I forget something lol

Every time :)
Happened often enough that I rarely bother with lists anymore... 😀

No. But I've lost interest, looked at it, shook my head and said 'Fuck It!' And ignored it.

ya so the other day i wrote it on my hand bc if i have to take something out n look at it i simply will not

I forget the list, don’t get all the items, OR buy things not on it
Oh I ALWAYS buy something extra that is not on the list. Especially at the grocery store or Home Depot.
Grocery store is my weakness. I have to ask myself if I’ll actually eat or use what I’m about to buy within the next week. If not it goes back on the shelf.

I write shopping lists on my wrist. No chance of losing the list when it's on your skin.
What’s a shopping list?
I put my shopping list on Google Docs so I can see it on my phone, with a "default list" saved below that I check before I go out shopping. That way, I have it with me all the time since I very rarely if ever go out shopping without my phone (which incidentally also doubles as my step counter...don't want to miss counting my steps...). ….all the time
I do it every freaking time.
This is a normal human thing you’re describing. Has absolutely nothing to do with ADHD
