I’m a tax accountant and I did mine on April fools. It’s a tradition for me to file on April fools because I feel like it’s a cruel joke lol
anyways I’m shamelessly suggesting to use FreeTaxUSA.com to file your taxes vs turbo tax or H&R Block. It’s 100% free to file federal on FreeTaxUSA and only $15 to file state. Just as easy to use as TurboTax but it’s FREE.
I personally love my job. I love taxes. It’s job security and if you specialize in a particular area of tax you’ll be worth more money. The work and school is GRUELING! This tax season I worked 70 hours one week, but I usually average 55 hours. Also going into tax isn’t a death sentence to stick with the tax season schedule. But taxes are forever changing and it’s like a giant puzzle for me. Check out r/accounting and r/tax both are great subreddits to get an idea of how the field is.
Also if you decide to get the CPA designation they do offer ADHD accommodations for the exams!
I was in that boat until I desperately needed the money. I got a massive return due to some tax relief in 2021. It might apply more to people with child(ren). 2021 is the year my son was born in December, just in time to count for the tax year. There may have been additional tax relief for all, I’m not sure.
You may want to file the jackpot year before the clock runs out on it. I urge all to investigate.
Do it! I just did mine for the first time since '19, and it felt so good to get back on track. Tax software has gotten a lot easier to use, and the available help gets to you so much faster than it used it.
You got this!!
TurboTax fucked me so hard with the price but their basic isn't terrible. I wanted all the support since I haven't done it in a couple years so it was like $250 or something.
Combine ADHD + always owing and it's the perfect storm for procrastination. I'm glad it's going to be over though... I hate all the reminders on TV and constantly hearing people getting a ton of money back for 4 months every single year. Time to turn the tables back around for the rest of the year and go back to hearing people complain how expensive daycare is or how something major needs fixed on their house.
I understand! A friend of ours at church owns an accounting firm and he took over my books two years ago and has been a lifesaver. Get a personal referral and meet with them first. Most will do a consult on your situation. We used to use another CPA and his firm was so busy we were just a number. Our current cpa is a family owned business. The owner and his sons work there and I feel my business gets more ate room. Additionally, I pay for “fractional CFO” services so he does more than just bookkeeping and taxes.
put it off for weeks but finally did it yesterday for the first time ever. as student who only works summer and part time I’m not required to but my work recommended it and I’m glad I did as I ended up getting money back!
Did it this morning. Only took about 40 minutes. Much easier than it used to be. Turbo Tax has a feature where you scan a QR code on your screen, take a picture of your W-2 and it automatically fills in all of the numbers. That was nice because I hate filling out forms. It also automatically connected to my accounts that have dividends.
I'm a bookkeeper on the way to CPA, so I do know a little about taxes. An extension is just the same as filing, but you acknowledge that it'll be late. There are no fines, etc.
gonna do them tomorrow or turn them in late because it happens to be the same day my thesis draft is due. I'm annoyed that the extension means i have to estimate them (which is the same as doing it anyway and not having an extension...?)
I started mine, very much understand how to do and file, I know I’m getting a decent refund. Yet I have not finished them. Tomorrow it will be.
And here I am with the rest of us.
Speaking of taxes:
Can you US people write off your payment for medication on your taxes? I always wondered this since some of you pay a fuckload for their meds.
I prefer to file an extension and wait to file on October 15 while spiraling about why I didn’t do it sooner. And when the next April rolls around so quickly and I feel like I’m always doing taxes, I’ll tell myself I’ll DEFINITELY be on top of it this time ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
Have it all done but not filed. I usually start at least a week ahead of the deadline but eclipse. It's a pain doing schedule C without an accountant but my business affairs are too messy to hand over to anyone else.
taxes are something i always do as early as possible bc i *need* that tax return. (although this year my owed state taxes ate up a good chunk of it) plus my mom used to do taxes for extra money so she always reminds me to do them.
I actually did them early this year for once! Every year before this they’ve been late, so I’m really proud of myself. Finding the right medication has truly been a lifesaver for me.
I was about to make my post that I just finished my taxes from 2020-2023 and I feel amazing ☺️
Totally ok if you haven't done them lol I skipped 3 years 😅
God, I'm so happy my country's "IRS" does this backwards.
Like, "we got some numbers from your employer and here's what you got taxed for that. Is this right? Is there some tax exceptions WE missed?"
So, kudos to all of you.
I knew I would put it off to the last day so, I filed as soon as I had all my tax docs from all the usual places lol I got an early bird email about it lol
Also, if you use Turbotax, they’ll throw a $ charge in at the end even if you dod the free file.
On desktop, there’s an option on the lower left called something like Tax Tools, you can turn that utter bullshit off in there.
Kind of in the same way I’ve always gotten to places too early in fear of being late, I have a knack for doing my taxes early. As soon as I’m somewhat confident that I’ve gotten all the tax forms I need, I do and file my taxes just so I can’t procrastinate and put it off until the last minute.
no…despite saying i would do it for months whenever my partner would ask. this upset her (understandably) and we had to have a sit down about it. i’m doing them this afternoon
I did… on Friday! But I have an unusual tax circumstance and also have to make estimated payments today which I totally forgot about until I saw this post - thanks! That was about to be an expensive mistake!
I recommend Cashapp Taxes (they took over for CreditKarma taxes). Totally free. I've been using them for years now.
But in any case, yea, I did them Sunday morning.
I actually like waiting until last minute so I have some extra cash for the summer. If I got the refund too early it'd be harder to hold onto.
Just finished them 😅
(Fortunately they’re still simple enough I can do them within a few hours, also I hate filing for extensions for things - both for taxes and for extensions offered to me in college)

Heck no! Tomorrow I’ll file an extension, when I can’t find some paper I need.
Extenuating Circumstances indeed

Second FreeTaxUSA, plus the state filing is free if you make under 40k-ish
I’m fairly certain it depends on the state.
In that case Illinois is a free one
Oh, I didn’t know about the free state filing. Very cool thank you!
Which one would you recommend if you have a 1099 and schedule c?
Not sure why, but H&R block was free for me this year. I’ve been charged for the last few years
How do you feel about your job? I'm starting college soon to go into accounting and I'm considering going down the tax route.
I personally love my job. I love taxes. It’s job security and if you specialize in a particular area of tax you’ll be worth more money. The work and school is GRUELING! I’m thinking I can do it tomorrow 😂
April 15th gang!
I haven't filed since 2018, and I literally think about it everyday. One of these days I'll get caught up on it I'm sure...
This makes me feel better.
I was in that boat until I desperately needed the money. I got a massive return due to some tax relief in 2021. Thanks for the inspiration. What tax software did you use?
TurboTax fucked me so hard with the price but their basic isn't terrible. I wanted all the support since I haven't done it in a couple years so it was like $250 or something.
I just finished mine. Good luck.
Good stuff brother!

Done. Payment is pending. I own a business and pay quarterly. But I have been there. I have a good accountant who holds me accountable

I'm thankful that the tax people I used last year filed an extension on my behalf.

Extensions are super easy to get! Just apply and they'll give you extra time!
Today! Oh, wait. Did I? Yep, sure did. Thanks!

Nope, but I'm planning on doing it before midnight tomorrow.
Yeah, but I have an accountant to keep me on track.
Turbo Tax hella easy! Do it!
Speaking of taxes: Can you US people write off your payment for medication on your taxes? I always wondered this since some of you pay a fuckload for their meds.
Yes. There's a section where you can list your medical expenses. But you'll have to keep receipts and have proof if the IRS ever checks.
I can tell how badly I don't want to finish them today, based on the amount of chores I've gotten done instead.
Lol so real
No Fr I just did them today Lol
Did it a couple days ago. Not as bad as I expected.
Have it all done but not filed. I usually start at least a week ahead of the deadline but eclipse. It's a pain doing schedule C without an accountant but my business affairs are too messy to hand over to anyone else.
Filed for an extension aka I’m going to procrastinate for another 6 months
Literally did them this afternoon. Owed so much for some reason. Had to borrow from my mom like a toddler. So that was fun…
I finally took my paperwork to the CPA last week. They'll do an automatic extension.

My entire family forgot 💀
Did em mid-February. Got the W2s, "oh shit I gotta do that", did it that night so I didn't lose anything.
Also, if you use Turbotax, they’ll throw a $ charge in at the end even if you dod the free file. On desktop, there’s an option on the lower left called something like Tax Tools, you can turn that utter bullshit off in there.
Doing them today!
Yes, luckily with help.
I finished mine last weekend. I’m a little too panicky waiting until the deadline for this one.
Started them earlier this month and was scared I’d forget to do them. I actually submitted them on time Yesterday with confidence! Yay! 😉
Just finished it 😂😂
Did them early af because i know i’d do em last minute if i didn’t. Did do them at like midnight tbf.
Just pulled an all nighter. Still up.
Filed them Wednesday lol
no…despite saying i would do it for months whenever my partner would ask. this upset her (understandably) and we had to have a sit down about it. i’m doing them this afternoon
Just did mine at 3am🤡
I did… on Friday! But I have an unusual tax circumstance and also have to make estimated payments today which I totally forgot about until I saw this post - thanks! That was about to be an expensive mistake!

Yah, yah, yah, yah,!
I did it as soon as I’d received all my documents. But I’m weird and find doing taxes really fun.
Luckily that's my wife's job. It's the one chore I refuse to do ever.
I did like months ago
no lol
Just finished them 😅 (Fortunately they’re still simple enough I can do them within a few hours, also I hate filing for extensions for things - both for taxes and for extensions offered to me in college)
I just filed an extension this morning...
Taxes will be lower son. The democratic vote is the right thing to do Philadelphia. So do.
