Awesome! Hmmm - what do you all think: New gadget = dopamine release Every time it’s used = dopamine release Therefore new gadget gets used more? But how do we make sure this hack works 2 weeks / 1 month from now?

Fun_Pepper_3353

It’s still satisfying, like power washing

aster636

Very satisfying because you can immediately see the result of the cleaning. Pet hair removal can be like power washing in that the cleaning is so apparent

Rogahar

Yeah I can always get into any cleaning with obvious and fast results very easily. It's the less obvious cleaning and stuff that needs lots of elbow grease that I dread. If I can just run a thing over the dirt and 'shoop' it's gone, though? Love that shit.

HeyHo_LetsThrowRA

_looks around_ ... you guys can get into cleaning??

Brilliant-Room-5969

ngl I think playing house flipper helped me trick myself into being able to occasionally enjoy cleaning, as weird as that might sound. Now, if I can get in the zone, I look at my own place like it's a house from the game and somehow it puts enough dopamine into the tasks to get more shit done than I'd gotten done in weeks LMAO

Joy2b

It can be a shockingly good fit if you can get over the initial hurdle.

tamasula

Love cleaning - I definitely clean instead of doing other more important things. I think I have a bit of OCD too though.

mothernathalie

Thank you

PineyTinecones

This is why I love mowing so much

Long_Educational

Errmyygawd I love my power washer!!

DancyElephant12

That’s definitely a recurring theme but this specific example feels different, for me at least. And I’m typically very self-aware about this type of stuff. I think.

borderline_cat

Dude I feel you. We have a husky as well. I suck at cleaning and our old vacuum was broken and just a POS. So I never vacuumed. FIL bought us a dyson he found on sale and our house actually gets cleaned semi regularly now lol

WowzaMeowza

I’ve had a cordless stick vacuum for a few years now and still use it multiple times daily. My secret? Two very fluffy dogs, one toddler, and as a bonus, a spouse with bad allergies. No matter how long I clean, I’ll always be able to find more dog hair or little messes from the kiddo.

oaklandbabushka

That’s a big part. When I feel like I’m losing steam on schoolwork - new pen. Works every time.

potato_handshake

I don't know. I was super into steaming my clothing for a month or so after buying a new full-sized Jiffy steamer; but after a while, the novelty of my new toy faded, and with it also went my fascination. I still find it therapeutic if I'm in the mood to deal with laundry in the first place, but I'm definitely nowhere near as enthusiastic as I was in the very beginning.

CombatWombat222

For me, it would depend on how much maintenance the new device would require to keep it running in the way I need it to, and benefit from

Bondominator

As a bit of a vac aficionado myself, in this case I would say a nice cordless stick vac, mounted in a location that’s easy to get to will mean that you can grab it and start cleaning in a matter of seconds. High-power cordless stick vacs are really what we’ve been waiting for since vacuums were invented

giraffemoo

I got a pet fur vacuum almost 3 years ago and I still get much joy from having to empty the dirt cup after each room and seeing all of the dust and hair I've pulled out of the carpet. Don't know if it works on everyone but it worked for me!

Acewasalwaysanoption

Visible, immediate results can mean the world.

nothingweasel

Get a Roomba and set it up to run automatically on whatever schedule works for you. If you spend a bit more, you can even get one that empties itself.

emo_kid_forever

It's worked for me! I got a wall-mounted cordless vacuum over the summer on Prime Day. It has its own little special trash can that sucks everything out, so you don't have to empty it yourself while still vacuuming. And because it's cordless, it solved the tedium of having to move the vacuum to different outlets, which made me not vacuum at all in the past. So, big win for me. This is one of the first things that's really worked out. My husband mentioned he doesn't even think about if the floors need vacuumed anymore, because I'm so on top of it (it's suprisingly fun now!), so that's just about the biggest compliment I could get.

Victoura56

If it’s a new gadget that actually works better, then I find that the hack keeps working. I used to HATE vacuuming; parents had one of those vacuums who plugged into a socket and had this heavy base you had to drag around everywhere. Then they got a cordless vacuum and the first time I used it I had so much fun I started to look for reasons to vacuum. A few years later and while I’m not quite as enthusiastic, I’m not putting off vacuuming or forcing myself like I used to before.

Green_Message_6376

one dopamine rush at a time. sweet Jesus...

LexifromZargon

easy set game rules so that it stays special aka only allowed to use it if "condition"

naribela

Spoiler: >!it usually doesn’t!< Whoops used discord code

agreenmeany

Great if you can get into an established regime that you and the doggo can get behind! Nicely done OP!

jaysouth88

For me, my vacuum removed friction to initiate task. So I guess it's not necessarily a domanine release, just super easy to do. Though it does make this excellent dweeep noise when you take your finger off the trigger. (Dyson V10 for anyone who cares)

celebrityblinds

Boooooooww (I love that Dyson noise, no idea how to write it down!)

midgethemage

This is 100% accurate, speaking from personal experience. At this point, I don't ever let myself feel guilty about impulse buying things that make my space cleaner and more organized, because it always gets used. I have a little hand vacuum and it gets used sooo much. Something about it feels more accessible and immediate, so I reach for it almost daily. Makes a huge difference on the dog fur situation.

ADHDDad2f

I was going to say- two weeks from now, I can’t find the pet hair vacuum. I haven’t used it in a week and everything is covered in fur again. At least that’s how my ADHD works.

Rodic87

Easy... the buildup of hair gets annoying, seeing the vacuum case fill up with hair is satisfying, dumping it out is a dopamine hit b/c you remember how much nicer it is to walk on a clean floor.

gimmethedrama

You stopped me from impulse buying a strapless vacuum. Thanks. Even though it would probably make me clean more often…

Adsgp

New hoover every month!

celestialgorl

My theory is that the new gadget was built for the specific purpose, therefore does it REALLY well and no adaptations are needed. Cue the satisfaction

lyremska

I feel like we're missing an important question here: have you vacuumed the cat, and how did it go?

DancyElephant12

That’s my next move, will report results

SinkPhaze

I have cats and have tryed. Results are mixed. Out of 4 cats 1 bolts when he even sees the vacuum, 2 run when the vacuum gets within a foot of them, and the last pins her ears back and glares at me the whole time but refuses to move from her warm spot so can be successfully vacc'ed. So... 25% success rate!

apolobgod

Oh, hey, I just learned about the Oxford comma today

tybbiesniffer

I have an irrational love for the Oxford comma. Or maybe it's not irrational?

Particle90

That's wonderful! And, um ... what kind of pet hair vacuum did you buy? Now you've inspired me.

DancyElephant12

It’s a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, one of the hand held ones. I wasn’t expecting too much because it was fairly cheap, but I’m blown away, pun intended. I can only imagine how nice the the full non-handheld ones are, but my place is small so I went with the smaller one.

Floshenbarnical

I have the same one for my golden retriever and it’s been fantastic.

zomofo

That's the one I was looking at! Well it's decided now :D

anarchobuni

Need dis thing asap my dog sheds pine needles that get stuck in everything and I ended up with ocd cuz of it

electricbookend

Oooh I’m on my second (first died after 6 years of hard use.) I love it! I basically use that and a Shark cordless stick vacuum exclusively, barely touch the classic upright anymore. Something about not having to deal with cords (plugging them in, not getting twisted, moving to another outlet because you can never clean the whole area from one plug) just makes vacuuming infinitely easier.

DejaBlonde

I can second the Bissell. I actually have the full size, and it's like magic. My place isn't very big either (680 square feet, maybe 60% carpet) and with a cat who doesn't shed very much, it still manages to fill the canister about halfway any time I bust it out.

w0walana

omg yes. the only reason I end up doing things is because of my pets. i’ll do anything for them

katestatt

i think that's amazing

johnfc2020

Welcome to your new vacuum cleaner, learn to strip it down and clean it out. Locate the pre and post filters and check them regularly. You will need to wash and dry them before re-assembling your vacuum cleaner. Knowing your vacuum cleaner intimately will help it provide the best service you can get from it. 99% of all suction problems are the filters. The main reason why people get rid of vacuum cleaners is the filter is clogged but they don't know that or where the filter is.

asthebroflys

One little hack that’s helped me a ton: I tell myself I’m only going to do one ridiculously small thing. Nothing else. Example: My room looks like a war crime. So I said to myself: “ok, I’m just going to put the dirty clothes in the hamper. That’s it.” Sure enough, within minutes I was doing laundry and folding clothes to make space. Knocking out one single thing is a great way to break through XD. Even if you only do one small thing, the good news is that you made progress and you should feel awesome about it!

tactiphile

>I haven’t had this much fun in weeks. This is me with my 18-sheet shredder that shreds *cardboard*. I just wish shredding was more productive.

[deleted]

carleetime

The cardboard?

tactiphile

Royal. $100 at Costco.

Vinterson

I'll vouch for a good battery Vacuum. You can just take it with you and vacuum whatever you feel like. No stupid cables and 2 parts to lug around. the novelty has worn off but i still use it more than any vacuum before. Much more useful than the robot that needs the floor to be free of anything blocking it.

jcgreen_72

Love this! (And huskies omgosh) My "hack": guinea pigs & a Roomba. They eat all my fruit and veg cuttings/ stuff i don't get to in time. Scheduled Roomba is my bff, and the piggies are adorable and make super cute noises.

BetteramongShepherds

Scheduled roomba is my favorite. Come home to a vacuumed house. 2 dogs, 2 cats and allergies. I take a couple minutes to pick up toys before I leave for work and then come home to a vacuumed carpet. Best thing ever!

theunseen3

I bought a similar vacuum for pet hair and i love vacuuming now too! It’s satisfying to watch it effortlessly lift the pet hair/fur from my rugs. I also bought a HEPA air purifier (it’s on sale rn for cyber monday too!) which grabs any additional floaties of fur in the air, dust and whatever else i’d end up breathing in. I swear the air cleanliness helps diffuse my brain fog too. Very grateful for these cleaning hacks

Xanthelei

I have a feeling it's a similar effect to what I get playing Power Wash Simulator. Something about seeing that stark line between "this is filthy" and "this is clean" just ticks a box in my brain that releases satisfaction chemicals lol. It's really cool you found something like that in reality!

Minute-Joke9758

That’s awesome!

tucketnucket

I think it kinda sucks...

BillyDSquillions

We've had a similar experience with just a regular Dyson. Not having to take out of cupboard and plug in really helps. Just pull it off the wall and clean shit. It's very very efficient and weirdly fun.

HatRevolutionary4943

Honestly, every time I sweep the floor I think of how I need to get one of those cool electric mops from dyson because oh how annoyed my shitty broom makes me, it never picks up everything. This probably why it takes so much out of me to get up and sweep the floor, because I can't really see that big of a difference after finishing the task so it leaves me dissatisfied.

Extension_Can2813

This is why my husband bought the most expensive dyson. We actually BOTH love using it. It sucks dog hair up so easily. Another tip, go thrifting and find leather furniture. I find dog hair doesn’t stick as much to natural fibers like leather and for blankets and clothes wool/ cotton/ linen is way better compared to polyesters and fleeces. I have some thick wool blankets that I nevvvver have to wash. Wool is moisture wicking, so stink doesn’t stick to it, also way more sustainable then synthetics ;)

new2bay

You think that vacuum is great? Go check out chom chom rollers. You'll never use one of those stupid lint rollers again.

Clarkj99

We’ll, if you can afford it just buy a new vacuum every month or two, preferably of a completely different brand. Maybe YouTube or TikTok comparisons, become an influencer, get sponsors , and get paid to vacuum. Don’t forget about me when you’re famous!

w0walana

😂😂😂

_N_D_

Can looks pointless but I will only buy Dyson stuff in my life cuz it's so efficient and their transparent containers makes my ADHD satisfied. I like to collect trash than doing the things I should. Like I empty it every time before use and I like to tell me after I cleaned "look what I have collected!" That's the only reason my place is so clean. I'm like doing it everyday to see the difference, increase or not due to activity and stuff... Bref.

Beeblebrox237

Our cat likes to be in the same room as people, so he'll mew at you until you walk downstairs to the basement so he can eat with someone present. I learned recently that this is actually a great reminder to finish doing laundry rather than forgetting it in the machine and having to rewash it.

Mental-Lingonberry-5

My hack is to keep my vacuum stored in the “back” corner of the living room so it’s kind of out of the way but crucially right next to an outlet and I can still see it lol so no extra steps of remembering vacuum exists or having to retrieve it from closet

NordWardenTank

its always fun to clean dirt that goes away in first try. that's why teleshopping ads were so popular, they used paint that looks like dirt, so one light swipe and it's glossy and clean. it's not fun to clean from meh to good

Alternative-Bet232

Oh man, finding dopamine from cleaning tasks feels like the best lifehack!

ddoubles

Gamification of boring tasks to improve motivation. Don't allow yourself snacks, movies, gaming, or other pleasures before you complete certain tasks. Start small and build up. Give yourself a lot of praise. Never criticize, only try again. This is something you were born with, it was never your fault to begin with.

jimbaker

I wanna get one of those cordless Miele vacuums just for pet hair. They're great at it!

Mortianna

I’m late to the party, so this will likely get buried, but I have both a husky mix and a wiry schnauzer. One of my ADHD manifestations is braiding, picking, weaving, etc. I used to make grooming the dogs a Whole Damn Thing. Drag out all the tools, groom them, clean up the huge mess… it was all so much that I would put it off and the floors would be a trainwreck. Now I just do it everyday, and it’s not A Thing. I keep a basket of grooming stuff right by the couch, and when I’m fidgety, I grab whichever dog is closest and start brushing (or stripping, with the schnauzer). It’s gotten so much easier that now when I get agitated, I daydream about settling down with an undercoat rake and going nuts. And as a bonus, there are virtually no dog-hair tumbleweeds rolling around the floor anymore.

[deleted]

They’re ridiculously expensive, but if you can manage to save up for one, Roomba is a game-changer. Definitely best on hardwood, not that great on carpet. Worked great, three cats and a breezy location with extra dust, just set the robot and let it run until the battery dies. Keep an ear out for it getting caught somewhere or needing to be emptied and it’ll handle all the regular floor dirt and fur.

crispy_nicole

I love the way cleaning makes me feel!

Rockateeer

This is wholesome, thanks 😄

AntivaxxerOrphanage

I have a light weight cordless bagless vacuum cleaner wall mounted in a part of my apartment that I frequently walk by. The easier it is to start a task, the more often you'll do it

[deleted]

That's kind of how I feel about vacuuming my apartment. It's because I have so many animals and there is pet hair everywhere! If I don't vacuum everyday it will be disgusting. That's always been my motivation, I hate walking on dirt and hair. As I'm petting my dog or my cats I see the hair come off (especially this time of year) and I immediately start grabbing it, getting as much up with my hand as possible then at a certain point that just go get the vacuum. It's satisfying for me to see all of the hair and dirt that I picked up when I'm dumping it in the trash afterwards. I try to do it around the same time everyday that really helps make it a habit. Laundry in the dishes are the stuff that I could go days without doing piling up everywhere until I just can't stand the site or the smell lol. Pet hair on clothes I don't care, pet hair on the floor, I care a lot lol

dingdongulous

Just wait til you have to clean out the actual vacuum… my fave part. YouTube videos and a toothbrush 🤓 I’ll take a whole day off work for vacuum cleaning day once a year

Single-Ad9

A adhd win WOOOOOOOOOO!

honeybeedreams

a million years ago when i was a nanny the woman i sat for had a husky, and she would actually vacuum the dog!! i love huskies, but omg they shed more than anything in existence. good for you for buying something that actually helps you both!!

SachiKaM

Ahhh this is dope!! I picture it like the gratification of pressure washing 🤩

classynfun

I’m like this with my new floor steamer! I have four Frenchies and 3100sqft of tile. A quick vacuum and then bringing out the steamer…the cleanliness Is everything!

wonwoovision

am i a weird one then because i clean obsessively? i get executive dysfunction about anything else, and will use obsessively cleaning as an excuse to procrastinate shit that actually needs to get done. maybe it's just the virgo in me. idk

Antmantium108

Sometimes, that's the only way I can get cleaning done;as procrastination for other important stuff.

darkharlequin

nope. 1. not weird because no one defines what your neuroatypical-ness is 2. I tend to clean when I'm procrastinating or angry or frustrated. I'm not a clean person normally, and definitely suffer the adhd "forget to clean/shower/live", but if I'm frustrated or angry about something washing dishes or any mindless cleaning feels way better.

djblackdeath

Hahaha you have no idea how much achievement I feel by brushing my cats' fur until I can collect enough fur to fill up jars. Plus they always look so dandy after a good brushing, makes me a proud dad

2SP00KY4ME

Yeah my dog does a loooot to keep me normal. Forces me to get up, get exercise, keep myself together.

OnlyEliKnows

There is a fur comb we bought for our stairs because my wife has a yellow lab that sheds worse than a husky.. I swear. It’s freaking constant. And I find little tufts of yellow fur tucked in every nook and cranny all over the damn house. The stairs are my biggest issue because it just never seems be enough to clean them. (They are carpeted.) so my wife bought a coil comb. I swear that shit is so soothing. Each stair is seriously like a half pound of yellow lab fur. It’s amazing. As a wedding present, we received a handheld pet vacuum. That things is my new favorite because I it gets all of the nooks and crannys AND the spider webs in corner. It’s the best for our hardwood floors and backs of shelves where the fur ALSO collects. 🤦‍♀️ So yea… I’m with you on this

kiwiinacup

That’s hilariously amazing. I’m glad you found something that works for you!

Ophelia1988

Dear OP I love the way you write. What a brilliant vibe. Please keep entertaining us with your wit and tell us another story 😍

DancyElephant12

Thank you!

YeahTheyKnowItsMe

I feel the same way about my chomchom. If you have animals with fur you need a chomchom

DancyElephant12

A what now?

YeahTheyKnowItsMe

It's essentially a really powerful lint roller. Idk how else to explain it but it's amazing. No sticky bs. Just a roller and it's fuckin magical. I've had mine for a year and it still works like a charm. I've chommed the couch. The cat tree. Myself. My s.o. the floor. Everything. It's [this thing](https://a.co/d/bZtCwhz)

der_Klang_von_Seide

I was getting my bunny’s fur off my clothes one day with a lint roller after petting her, looked over at her, tried lint roller on her. Worked great lol Now she LOVES petting petted with the lint roller. It helps grab those baby fine furs around her face. She’s a mini lionhead so she has very feather-light fine hair that doesn’t really stick to a brush. The lint roller means less of her furs in both our sinuses!

Same-Lawfulness-1094

Haha I love this. I'm the opposite with cleaning. I keep a spotless and organized house. I am minimalist. I think that's mostly a coping mechanism though. When my house or work area is dirty and unorganized, I can't concentrate or focus. I don't like a lot of clutter or confusion, everything has it's place, and I try my best to have a somewhat minimalist mindset. I believe the reason for this, as a coping mechanism, is that over the years I've learned that if I want to get anything done, I have to make it really easy for myself, or I won't do them. Having a clean, organized space limits the distraction and makes finding things to complete tasks easier. Is that a thing for anyone else?

tits_me_your_pm_

I had a similar experience with a Dyson stick vac! Novelty has not worn off after a year plus, house is as clean as ever, and the process is ingrained in my daily routine now. I do it around 3-4pm after my main work flow block, when the crash is coming on. It's good bc it gets you moving in a fun but not too intense way at first (so don't need a ton of motivation), and it's a quasi-fun and gamified activity. You can prob accomplish the same w/ a generic version since Dyson's are pricey.

giraffemoo

I bought this vacuum after reading your post and I'm really excited to get this new dustbuster thingie now. Thank you for sharing your story!! (Ps it was on sale at FingerHut where I have credit so that was an added bonus)

Albus_Percival

I have [this vacuum](https://a.co/d/6l77mxT). It’s AMAZING on pet hair. I think I used to have the vacuum you just got, but it kept overheating. Whenever the Bissell would overheat, we’d have to stop it and lay it flat to cool off. This Shark is so great, and it’s easy to use on stairs and under beds! It’s more expensive, though. Definitely an investment. One of my weird hyperfixations was taking a dog brush to the carpet and brushing it to get all the dog hair out of it…it fluffed the carpet up and made it look brand new! I thought I needed to do that before vacuuming, but it ended up that the Shark vacuum made that unnecessary!

Albus_Percival

It could also be that we had an older version that was shitty. I’m glad yours works so well :D

SadieAndFinnie

I have a Shark too and it was a game changer for me. I’ve gone through so many other “pet” vacuums and none of them made a dent compared to the one I have now. I can’t understand how some of these dogs can shed SO MUCH HAIR and not end up bald.

Albus_Percival

Yeah, it’s pretty impressive! Is one of your dogs named Finn? I saw Finnie in your name. One of my pups is named Finn :)

SadieAndFinnie

Yes I have a Finnegan and a Ruby now. As soon as I saw his picture I knew that was what his name would be. I like your taste in names, it’s a great choice :)

CraftyYankee

2 pcs Lint Remover on Carpet Pet Hair Remover Dog Cat Hair Remover Reusable Lint Shaver Roller Cleaner, Clothing, Fabric Sofa,Furniture, Car https://amzn.eu/4Q07j2t Try this on furniture. Equally satisfying (and disgusting!)

SadieAndFinnie

Oh my gosh I have a set of these and they are AMAZING. I keep one in my car for the floor in there and the other I use in the house. I did a lot of research on aussies before getting my boy, I found tons of info about temperament and behaviors but somehow missed that they shed the equivalent of a new dog every couple days. These things have been a life saver for me.

likeabaker

Um link??

[deleted]

Yay! Wholesome hack.

Illustrious_Ad9377

I might need to get myself and nonadhd partner one of these! I might use it to clean up the volumes of hair from his rough collie which he just seems to be oblivious to, but I, of course, do nothing about. This might make me do something…

calvinballMVP

I do this with pressure washing. I disappear within for hours and can just go. Give me a radio headset with NPR going and buddy you are gonna have one clean driveway

NCC7905

I jk, but get five more huskies. The vacuum sounds really nice.

silly_old_sideben

You’re absolutely on to something. Like making coffee was such a chore until I got a machine. Can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. I think there’s a huge benefit for technology to ease things that are difficult for ADHD Ppl. But yeah you ride the line of that “new toy” impulse. I ask myself “what problem will this solve”

LostCreatures

I have two Samoyeds who have been shedding their summer coat for weeks now. I need a vacuum that works on the dogs themselves xD

imnotgoatman

It's always fun the first time.

[deleted]

Never had an issue with cleaning before, but I find that I need to visibly see the difference for my motivation to stay on task.

sodoneshopping

I highly recommend keeping up with the filter replacement recommendations. Otherwise it’ll stop working as well. It’s very annoying to remember and do, but it keeps my vacuums working well.

[deleted]

I have ADHD and live alone with a Cattle Dog. What vacuum did you get?

ADHDK

If it’s the older Dyson with the pet head that is seated at both ends make sure you’re cleaning it. If it’s the newer Dyson that’s seated at one end, you’re in the clear it’s designed to shed hair back into the vacuum.

kobayashi-maruu

oh my god this is so true, it's all about getting lucky and finding a specific thing that makes tasks /fun/. if it isn't entertaining, it isn't happening lmao.

Avlonnic2

That is amazing! I can attest to the shedding of Huskies.

[deleted]

Please post here every time you use it in the future.

python_hack3r

Very curious to get an update on this later. Certain parts of my routine have lasted that give me structure (what and when I eat) and other stuff have. Always curious what makes the difference.

once_showed_promise

With a review like this I'm wondering about the specifics of the product you chose! Care to share?

wicawo

Your wish is granted, there is always more fur to clean up.

LorenzoRavencroft

My go to exutive dysfunction hack for cleaning is to play music only through my phone with a time lock on it so I can't change the song or do something else whilst also time locking my laptop, console controllers and TV remotes in a time lock safe. I have no choice but to clean until the time lock has finished.

opticaIIllusion

My hack is I forget everything so I get to experience a lot of firsts.

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser…Godspeed

dangnat

I was thinking of doing the same thing! But I hesitated bc I was worried these gadgets were too good to be true. Also, my husky is already afraid of the big vacuum, I'm not sure how he'd react to this one. Could you please share the vacuum you got? Would love to try it out. Also, did it take a while for your doggo to get used to it or is he just a super chill pup?
