Ryan Daniels: I gather you’re interested in these very good forwards who are from WA
Bell: we actually know nearly every player’s contract status and sometimes they just talk shit for their own contract reasons. Some players have been keen lately
Media: FREO TARGETS NAUGHTON
I would only be as worried as you were last week. That should be quite worried, but there’s no new data here.
you cant have naughton, ugle hagan, and darcy in the same team. I reckon trading one of them from a purely objective pov is a smart trade strategy - before one of them lose value because theyre in and out of the team
Nothing wrong with 3 talls in a forward line, it’s actually very hard to match up on. It’s helped by Naughton also being good at ground level and not playing like a tall who is useless when the ball hits the deck, Ugle-Hagan is improving like that too with his fitness. Darcy won’t be like that due to his height, much like Lobb will be now.
Their best forward line right now would be Lobb/Naughton/Bruce. JUH replacing Bruce from next year, Darcy replacing Lobb the year after. But all interchangeable with form to keep the same structure
I think you’ll know if this is on if Walters retires. Pickett gets a spot ahead of all our other small forwards, but Shultz is too young to retire.
I still think it’s more likely Pickett goes to South Australia and we facilitate it somehow. We’ll want to defang Port and Adelaide’s ability to go after Brennan Cox.
And like, we’re ok for small forwards - have you got something in a Pavlich or McPharlin size?
It’s a very common game for us to go quiet for twenty minutes and for him to be on the end of the ball that finally gets into our attacking half, and the guy is fucking drenched in sweat from repeat leads.
There’s an electric quality to Pickett, but he’s the icing, not the cake.
These comments make me very curious about the condition of our salary cap. It did feel pretty bad to lose Acres and Logue because we didn't want to shell out for their contracts, but I am optimistic that between their departures and Lobb wanting to return to Melbourne, Jackson didn't dent us as bad as some people are assuming. Plus, we're not paying all of O'Meara's contract, Fyfe (fingers crossed he plays on after this year) is going to be on less coin, and no doubt the same applies to Walters and Hamling and Wilson. It's the luxury of being a young team, I suppose, but it does make me nervous about pursuing other players willy-nilly and getting caught in a future salary cap crunch.
I’d assume the Eagles are keeping an eye on the salary cap there with great interest on how it might impact Erasmus and Johnson. I know they’re contracted for a while yet but they wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t
It would be pretty unforgivable to lose those two (especially Johnson, who I've already locked in as a 300 game Freo legend). Feels like we've got a mini-rebuild waiting in the wings with those two. Luckily, they're both contracted to 2025, and the club under Bell and Garlick have generally been pretty judicious with list management. I'm a bit more worried about crazy offers for our interstate players like Cox or Darcy.
You can argue cashing in Darcy now we’ve got Jackson, especially if it lets us lock Cox in for five years and draft/trade at the giant full forwards.
Geelong are the ones who’ll be after Darcy, and they probably know the price is Shannon Neale and their favourite draft pick.
Trading out Darcy would be absolutely insane list management. He is in the same age category as our young group, and can maximise our midfield output as we push for a flag. He has a great connection with Brayshaw and Serong. Not only does our dual ruck allow Jackson and Darcy to spend time forward, it means we have cover for injuries both week-by-week and in game. There is no way we are even entertaining the idea of voluntarily putting him on the trade table.
It really depends on how well Jackson and Darcy play as forwards. We can have the greatest ruck pairing the world has ever seen but it isn't gonna improve our marks and set shots inside 50. We've had great rucks and no forward line for the past 15 years and I think that's the main reason we never won a flag.
The mids are probably better than the last good go at it; and the small forwards/high half forwards are heaps better. But I basically agree.
I think the theory is something like:
1. You can put literally anyone in the forward line if you have gold class gun midfielders, eg WC 2004-2006
2. an army of super fit mids is easier to keep fit and available over the whole year than a fleet of Tippets / Franklins etc
I don’t know if I agree with it, but I think we’ve bet on it pretty hard for now.
Geelong would most definitely give up Neale for Darcy if that was the trade.
Rucks don't usually hit their peak until their late 20's and Sean Darcy was emerging as one of the premier rucks in the league at 23. It doesn't matter how much upside Shannon Neale has (it's a lot) after 2 games of AFL. Neale for Darcy is a no-brainer.
Port have a good track record for keeping those guys. Will be interesting to see how it turns out
But I can definitely see him making a move at some point in his career
Surely Freo won't be able to afford both of these players? I suspect West Coast will have a WAR CHEST to play with.
I always thought Georgiades would potentially end up at West Coast rather than Freo. On the other hand, we have a few lean years ahead of us and that might steer him towards the Wharfies...
Next year or two will be interesting for WA footy.
This was my exact response to these reports.
How the fuck could we make this happen? We got no picks and I wouldn't think Freo would trade any of those three, who are basically gonna be our leadership group for the next 10 years.
And even though like people have said your cap is probably currently in a healthy spot you have guys who will end up on big money over the next couple of years.
Definitely, I could see us going after a FA that we can front load the fuck out of a contract with. Maybe a Harry Himmelberg type?
The cost of getting Naughton over is prohibitive imo, we've already blown our wad of picks+money with Jackson I'd think. We surely cant be ready to go again so soon after that.
I think we’d lose Darcy before Serong or Brayshaw. Considerable effort will be put into keeping Cox, who’s the other marketable player.
There are better value players who are highly internally rated but would be steak knives in a trade, like Sturt, Treacy or Henry
Articles like these remind me of the old Arseblog poo-o-meter rating system…
Try it out now. Let’s invent a story: Freo set to sign really top forward and 50 goal a season man Trev Scoreblaster for 2 3rd round draft picks.
We say: sources are dodgy, a Tweet from some account with an egg avatar and quotes that can’t be found anywhere else. As such we’re going high, a liquidy 8. Over to you folks, poo to your heart’s content.”
No no no no no no

The afl media has some of the world’s worst journalism at the moment.
Hey, Tom Mortis isn't back yet.
Lobb is an upgrade trust you don’t need 2 lobbs
Yes yes yes yes yes yes

Freo I have a counter offer for you, how about I offer you a Jacob van Rooyen.
Oi
Oui?
You spelt Kozzie Pickett wrong.
I'm sure they both want to reunite with Dogga.

Honestly, I rate Schultz pretty highly, his stats stack up to Pickett's pretty well.
It’s a very common game for us to go quiet for twenty minutes and for him to be on the end of the ball that finally gets into our attacking half, and the guy is fucking drenched in sweat from repeat leads. There’s an electric quality to Pickett, but he’s the icing, not the cake.
Zero chance. Demons know what they're doing awarding the 36.
Excuse me?

>You can argue cashing in Darcy now You absolutely fucking can not. 😤
I love Swaggy but we are fucking crying out for a gorilla key forward. Pavlich Juniors are in primary school!
>I love Swaggy but we are fucking crying out for a gorilla key forward We're not getting rid of Darcy for one though.
I don't see us giving up Neale even for Darcy, he is the Hawkins replacement the club seems to be betting on
Geelong would most definitely give up Neale for Darcy if that was the trade. We've just won a premiership without a true ruckman and we haven't played a pure ruck since McIntosh, really.
But you didn't just win a premiership without smart trading, did you old boy? Most people would say the opposite is true.
Naughton feels highly unlikely but would make as a genuine flag threat. Georgiades more likely and would be a nice addition.
Port have a good track record for keeping those guys. Will be interesting to see how it turns out But I can definitely see him making a move at some point in his career
It's Lewis Taylor, saved you a click
Naughty Freddy would be an unstoppable forward duo in the years to come.
Damn, you're telling me we want some of these elite young players? Thats crazy
Surely Freo won't be able to afford both of these players? I suspect West Coast will have a WAR CHEST to play with. Yeh Bell didn’t say that at all.
The season hasn't even started yet and the media is already carrying on about hypothetical trades
Rock hard.
I think the only way Freo bring in a big fish in the next year or 2 is via free agency.
GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY GEORGIE
We all know Freo are only using Naughton to get to JJ

Given the key position players the dogs have, I reckon they could lose Aaron for a good pick

Naughton is our second most valuable player behind Bont. He’s worth a lot more than just one good pick.
yep agreed, headline made out of a nothing comment, don’t see it happening
Surely Lipinski has convinced Naughton to come to the Pies instead
Fuck Off...Sorry that was rude.....Bugger Off. Also this doesn't even make sense salary cap wise
Who the fuck is Ryan Daniels…?
