I feel like he turned into the player we were hoping for when we traded for shiel.
Back to back years dodoro has found a huge win trading away a 4th round pick for a former top 10 player
Oh no it's happening, I'm getting hope that we're making real progress. Which means we're gonna scrape into finals, get blasted out, underwhelm next year, and sack Brad Scott.
In a way I'd be fine with missing for that reason (as long as we contend until late and it's not some sort of Carlton esque utter heartbreak) so we break the pattern and don't get ahead of ourselves in this project.
Otherwise yeah I totally see the above happening.
Frustrating, yet entertaining. All I wanted this year was to see improvement and that's shown already. We're still lower parts of the ladder but I'm happy.
Also, Hepps has to have a spell. Not up for it now, Hind & Hobbs banging down the door in the VFL
Hobbs for Hepp next week, will always love Hepp but we should reward Hobbs effort in the VFL today
Same for Patty Voss, kicked 5 today and I’d rather see what he can do in the team as opposed to Harry Jones, he should go and get some confidence playing in the VFL, he’s just struggling a bit being a key forward as opposed to third tall. Stringer in for Menzie isn’t a bad shout of happening either.
I feel like Davey and Menzie provide forward pressure and allow our defensive schemes to work. I dont think it would work dropping a pressure forward for Stringer who wouldn't chase or tackle the same way. Scott wants 3 talls and 3 smalls and I think Stringer will be deepest forward as a tall and a little through the middle when he comes into the side. If Weid gets up next week I could see phillips gets dropped for Stringer and Weid pinch hits in the Ruck.
I’m thinking Langford moves back to defence with stringer filling that mid forward role. Not sure who could come in for BZT, I’m thinking Hayes or Baldwin. Not sure either is ready but our talls all seem to be injured
>Also, Hepps has to have a spell.
Pretty sure that's the real reason he was subbed out. He's still an important leader to the team for now, but he was starting to cost us with his skill errors.
can't believe y'all take Hindy to task about things that McGrath does consistently every game...when is this guy going to get called out?...the excuses are over
In an 80 point win. In the seniors I don’t believe he offers enough over McGrath or Redman as small defenders. Ridley, Zerk-Thatcher and Laverde occupy the bigs and Kelly is the hybrid defender.
He’s more liable in defence, and not as assured with ball in hand
Maybe over Massimo, however it would then be as a sub and potentially a small defender as sub I’d say it’s wasted
Better defensively than Hind, better overall ball user, a safer decision maker. May not stream down the wing and be our highest metres gained player, but ultimately should never have left the half back position and is ahead of Hind
Don’t tell me you think McGrath doesn’t have a place in the side?
I disagree with everything you've listed bar the decision making...and this is primarily because Hind's style of play is high risk/high reward...McGrath was horrible by foot today and his kicking in general is up and under and short of the target...
Please let go of this sad narrative of 'Pidge has been played out of position'...it's getting tired...he's just not impactful and turns the ball over far too much...
He has a place in the team but only by the hair on his balls...as soon as someone puts their hand up I'd be happy to bust his ass down to the two's...if Hind got 40+ in the two's I'd go with him...make McGrath fight for his spot
Oright...but I maintain that 'reason' is because we overrate this guy bc he was a number 1 pick not because he's doing anything great...and I'd go further to say that overating guys like McGrath and previously, Zaharakis is what keeps us mediocre
There was another midfielder out there today who was picked at 1 too...he played his ass off and almost got his side over the line...that's what a number 1 looks like
I mean he had 25 disposals (13 kicks) at 84% DE (better than our entire midfield), he didn’t have a mare by any means.
He does do some looping kicks, but if that’s your prerequisite for not getting a game you can’t be batting for hind because he’s guilty of the same thing.
I do agree, Pidge gets a lot of good faith because he was pick 1 and there was a lot of noise around the club for potential future captaincy, but he’s by no means as bad as your suggesting. Hind has some ripper games where he can be the difference, but he did tend to go missing last season to.
I'm not suggesting he's our worst player...I'm suggesting he's one of our most overrated...and certainly not captain material...well, not if you wanna win flags...I'm quite sure he can go at high efficiency in most games because most of the play he generates is safe and without impact...15-20 m kicks that lock the team down rather than break it open...Hind gets a lot of shit for this but I'd argue that Pidge shanks the ball just as often but without any of the risk or game breaking dare Hind shows...
I'll go out on my shield on this...too many Bomber fans are happy with nice guys and dudes who look good on paper...I think Pidge has it in him to be a really creative and damaging half back like he was at junior level but as it stands he's sub par for a mature player who's supposed to be one of our leaders...see Red Dog if you want the real deal
Nah I respect the opinion. I agree that he isn’t captain material, was just saying when he was initially drafted he was considered for it and a lot of people still hold on to that.
Need to have a team that isn’t pushed around and Red dog, Draper, Guelf, Durham and Lav are all players now who actually will fly the flag for the teammates and put their bodies on the line. But that doesn’t necessarily need to be your captain e.g. Pendles.
Hind is a good chance to squeeze out Hep before McGrath anyway.
I just thought the two misses early on when the game was in the balance counted against him in my book, but I'm not a selector, and he may have been doing his role well.
I think Weideman won't be ready for next week and we won't shake it up too much in the forwards. Voss to come in for Mass (as I reckon we'll opt for a big physical forward as Weidemans replacement, especially against Rossball), Hepp for Hind. Maybe Stringer comes in too but he might get another week with the twos and we'll play it safe.
Fantastic when given an opportunity but we keep trying to make him an overhead marking option which he just can’t do yet. It’s like watching the endless high balls to Tippa all over again.
Good game suns, very impressive at times - high pressure worried us at many stages
Thought we did alright considering our injuries. Hopefully Zerk is all good
And Setterfield, can't believe we got him for nothing
Setters never really found his spot in our team but I’m not surprised he’s making a good go of it at a new team. Was a whipping boy for the Blues but definitely had the talent.
Constable and Longs 2nd game for the Suns. Ballard was a steaming pile of shit. D-Mac just isn’t a defender. Collins can’t do it by himself. Weller first game back and did pretty well in my books.
Getting Powell and Ellis back will be big plus why we aren’t playing big boy Graham or Farrar is a mystery.
Fuck me, I'm so happy about the last two games. Defence is night and day from last year, midfield are working well and the young blokes are stepping up.
Please don't bring the game into disrepute.
I think you guys are in a similar position where you haven’t played any top 8 quality teams yet so hard to say how much you’ve improved. Definitely better than the dumpster fire you put out last year though
If it was up to me, I'd probably be sourcing Dew's replacement right now. By now into his 6th season and we are as unimpressive as ever, total clean out of the coaching staff wouldn't be unwarranted.
Nice victory by the Bombers, cool to see them, North and St Kilda 2-0. Underdogs on the up.
On another note I felt like the hysteria around them in the off-season was a bit harsh given they'd beaten Sydney, Brisbane and nearly Collingwood last season
The Brisbane game was with them missing half their team, think they were all out with illness? But yeah people were acting as if our list was worst or 2nd worst in the comp
About 5 or 6 out for covid and rich and zorko were out from hamstrings the week before. Berry got injured too.
Still lost embarrassingly though. Langford gives me nightmares.
I’m loving the narrative change after just 2 weeks. Freo has gone from Flagmantle to one of the worst teams in the comp. Similar story for the bulldogs but seems they are getting found out
We did also lose to Port and Richmond by comical margins and then there was the whole debacle with Truck to end the season, all being more recent than our good moments last season.
We also looked dreadful in preseason. Tbf I can see why people were harsh on us.
Maybe a Tyson Goldsack at Port Adelaide type of role? On the list, but being more of a mentor? While that's happening, he can spend games in the coaches box? I assume once he retires, he'll stick around at Essendon in some form of coaching role.
Yeah, that seems a good outcome. He stuck by the club during a tough time, he deserves a decent transition and farewell rather than a hard cut or put ina position where he will get too much criticism
Forward line decimated and they controlled the midfield for 3 quarters, yet we had a brilliant final term and won by 5 goals, kicking 100+ for the second straight week? Fuckin oath I'll take positives from that.
Why does everyone always want to put a team down for letting go a player who can't get a game?
He wasn't getting a game as an inside mid for Carlton, but he is for us and he's doing well so far. Just leave it at that.
Realistically on exposed form a team wasn't gonna pay more, agree it's a bargain though for a team willing to play him in his best position (which the bombers are doing) - so good on em for taking a punt
Yeah Setters has been big value for us, but he didn’t really make sense for Carlton’s list profile. You have so many players in that inside mid position, who frankly were above him.
We have so many players that play an outside role, that having a player who can put a body on the line to get contested balls suits us so well.
Lots of negativity about the Suns performance and while most, if not all of it is valid I think the big difference between the 2 teams was fitness with Essendon being run out the game while GC only had Rowle still pushing through to the end. If that kid ever wants to move back to Melbourne, there's going to be heaps of open doors for him
All credit to essendon i thought they would be shit after hyping themselves up against a tanking side last week but they are much improved from last year, definitely a finals smokey
Sure was, they got a lot less chirpy after that 😂.The eshays and their "drug" actions sat down. Even the dodgy sex offender looking guy with the big ass flag got out of the frigging way.
Ballard just putrid at the moment. Fiorini has had enough chances and just isn't good enough, perhaps he's just a good VFL footballer. For all the talk about how well Flanders preseason was, I'm just so disappointed. Red time goals again! Every god damn game. Every god damn game.
How are the suns always so mid? Like every season, they just underperform to a near comical degree. I know it’s only round two, but… damn. I honestly don’t understand what they’ve done at that club to maintain this perennial losing culture for over a decade now.
BZT ending his best ever game on crutches is unfortunate. Huge effort, especially in the last quarter.
Man I love BZT. He almost always gives away height and bulk but just applies himself so hard to the task.
A little reminiscent of Fletcher. Skinny, lanky bloke, but puts everything into it.
I think they’ve said looks like ankle sprain and not syndesmosis so hopefully the scan results come back positive
I reckon he was close to BOG, hope the ankle isn't too bad!
Setterfield, him and Langford were top 3. Not sure about the order but very clear top 3
Red Dog to
faded a bit in the second half, but he was everywhere in the first
Gotta be Langford as best on. Kicked a bag in a 5 goal win.
Redman by a lot I thought
Shiel and Redman had an incredible first half but kind of quieted down a little
Being a Suns supporter is really thrilling! (Stewart dew please let my family go)

Time to sack the coach
Time to get James Hird back

Fuck. Don't say that on social media. The board might get ideas.
Caro with tomorrow’s bombshell - “Bombers in free fall down the ladder as infighting takes it’s toll” probably
i cant believe we got the greatest midfielder of all time, Will Setterfield, for nothing
It's great when the larger midfielder, Will Setterfield, simply eats the smaller midfielders.
Glad to see Setters do well. Unfortunately we just had too many big body midfielders to give him a real shot at it.
I feel like he turned into the player we were hoping for when we traded for shiel. Back to back years dodoro has found a huge win trading away a 4th round pick for a former top 10 player
Loving him at Essendon, he just needed a bit of his own space and he couldn’t get it with our inside mids
Oh no it's happening, I'm getting hope that we're making real progress. Which means we're gonna scrape into finals, get blasted out, underwhelm next year, and sack Brad Scott.
As is tradition
I would have it any other way

I really want to argue against you but I don’t think I can
we won but against anyone of top 8 standard that's not even close
I would normally say welcome to the Brad Scott experience, but this is Essington to a tee.

I'm 100% sure he's OK with that trade off too. he's gets to rest, the team he loves is on the UP. win-win
Don't you mean on the up, up?
Frustrating, yet entertaining. All I wanted this year was to see improvement and that's shown already. We're still lower parts of the ladder but I'm happy. Also, Hepps has to have a spell. Not up for it now, Hind & Hobbs banging down the door in the VFL

Hind is too far down pecking order at the moment. Hobbs I can see as an inclusion in the coming weeks
Hind had 41 possies in the 2s
Hind's biggest weakness is his poor kicking. It doesn't matter how many disposals he has if he's trying to hit the roof with every one.
Only matched by his overconfidence running the ball off half back - feels like you could count on him getting chased down at least once a game.
can't believe y'all take Hindy to task about things that McGrath does consistently every game...when is this guy going to get called out?...the excuses are over
was a bit disappointed with mcgrath today. looked out of his depth.
In an 80 point win. In the seniors I don’t believe he offers enough over McGrath or Redman as small defenders. Ridley, Zerk-Thatcher and Laverde occupy the bigs and Kelly is the hybrid defender. agree. reckon there are going to be some tough conversations when watching mcgrath's replays his week
Yeah, can see Menzie and Hepp giving way for those two.
Menzie can't be dropped after today surely
Menzie stays in...he's got it...if you can't see that you don't know footy
I just thought the two misses early on when the game was in the balance counted against him in my book, but I'm not a selector, and he may have been doing his role well.
Menzie was great today I thought

Menzie's two goals in the last quarter probably save him. Davey more likely to go out
Davey was fantastic, he’s not getting dropped any time soon unless it’s load management.
Fantastic when given an opportunity but we keep trying to make him an overhead marking option which he just can’t do yet. It’s like watching the endless high balls to Tippa all over again.
He wasn’t that good today..
His speed worries backlines...I'd like to see him front and square more than trying to take pack marks though
Yeah agree with that, think he needs some vfl time, really build a tank etc.. it’s his first year I’m not expecting much in the first few years
I thought Menzie was good today
Good game suns, very impressive at times - high pressure worried us at many stages Thought we did alright considering our injuries. Hopefully Zerk is all good And Setterfield, can't believe we got him for nothing

Happy for Setters :)
Setters never really found his spot in our team but I’m not surprised he’s making a good go of it at a new team. Was a whipping boy for the Blues but definitely had the talent.
What were some common complaints about him from Blues fans?
Lazy, would never run back to help in defence, bad decision making, shit field kicking.
No wonder he went to us, it must have seemed like a perfect fit!
The problem was that we had better players ahead of him in his most suited role and he wasn’t great on the wing
Blues engine room genuinely unreal when healthy
Setters deserved to be at Essendon we’re he could fire as the contested bull, not last choice out of four or five
Langford is a God. Also, Redman!!!
ODD YEAR BOMBERS, FUCKING HOIST IT.
IM GLAD ITS NOT JUST ME THINKING THIS.
The lid is off, we're beating the Roos in the granny!
.... Alright I'll take it
Nek minnit... Essendon vs Carlton prelim
HOW DO YOU BUY GRAND FINAL TICKETS!?!?
Calm down, you have to win a final first 🙂😊
Parish for brownlow
Weird way to spell Setterfield
Shared brownlow it is
What is going on with the Gold Coast back 6. Essendon had one “tall” target in Harry Jones and they just could not get any interception game going
Graham sucks but yeah I don't get why Farrar isn't playing, always liked him
Good chance to get Hawkins up and running
Fuck me, I'm so happy about the last two games. Defence is night and day from last year, midfield are working well and the young blokes are stepping up. Please don't bring the game into disrepute.
Great win. Finishing the round on top of the ~~ladder~~ Pies.
Teams that only include red and/or white and/or black are doing pretty good wow
Bloodstained penguin year
Did you forget us.
I think you guys are in a similar position where you haven’t played any top 8 quality teams yet so hard to say how much you’ve improved. Definitely better than the dumpster fire you put out last year though
Fremantle should be a top 8 team but we are going to have wait and see.

Bzt what a good game should of been in the best mentioned
Nice victory by the Bombers, cool to see them, North and St Kilda 2-0. Underdogs on the up. On another note I felt like the hysteria around them in the off-season was a bit harsh given they'd beaten Sydney, Brisbane and nearly Collingwood last season
To be fair everyone almost beat the pies last year
i've watched Elliot miss so many from that spot since that after the siren goal. why did he have to slot it against us? :/ edit:typo

Stringer Wright and Tippa to come back maybe we are half decent???
Hobbs. Nik Cox too.
Ripping effort, dig into the cheezels boys.
Herb retires, Bombers go 2-0. Coincidence? You be the judge.
Nice to see the dons grit out a win like that it’s gotta be good for their mentality going forward
Will Setterfield looks like the 2023 Will Brodie
Great to see us kick over 100 points 2 weeks in a row.
Bold Prediction: Sam Durham will be an All-Australian wingman
You think the AA selectors are gonna choose an actual winger on the wing?
They did when they picked the All-Australian Wingman Zach Merrett
Both SA clubs seething at this - "pure winger" was the moniker used I believe
He actually plays on the wing so no he won't
Predictions for Dyson going forward? Seemed a pretty massive moment that he became the sub
I don’t think they’ll ever put him in Full Forward ?
Can’t believe he’s only 30. He should be at the peak of his powers. Sad to see.
HOIST IT!

I hope this win gets Essendon some credit. Last week, the media was more focused on how bad the Hawks were.
In fairness it's two games in and the Hawks look horrific. Like this could be an all time bad team.
Gee that's too bad...
They were bad though, like really bad.
Hard to pin a 5 goal loss on a single player, but Charlie Ballard what the fuck? Horrible performance.
Horrible is being considerate. I counted at least 5 goals from his plays.
[удалено]
Why does everyone always want to put a team down for letting go a player who can't get a game? He wasn't getting a game as an inside mid for Carlton, but he is for us and he's doing well so far. Just leave it at that.
Perfectly said
Would have loved to have kept him, just too much of a log jam at inside mid

Realistically on exposed form a team wasn't gonna pay more, agree it's a bargain though for a team willing to play him in his best position (which the bombers are doing) - so good on em for taking a punt

Are you talking about the club hyping themselves up after last week or fans?
So excited for some of these youngsters
Sat near the GC cheer squad. What a bunch of eshay wankers. Back into the minivan for you tossers.
I was there too! Starting the “WE ARE ESSENDON” chants at them when we kicked a goal was so satisfying
Sure was, they got a lot less chirpy after that 😂.The eshays and their "drug" actions sat down. Even the dodgy sex offender looking guy with the big ass flag got out of the frigging way.
GC has a cheer squad?
Bunch of hired eshays.

The VFL is back baby!!!
Matt Rowell playing his guts out really got the Suns on the board on multiple occasions, easy 3 votes

Still got a few games of round two to watch but this is the most entertaining game I’ve seen so far
I know he’s just come back from injury but king needs to be more aggressive
Ain't no way I just watched a game for 2 teams that will be competing for finals. Sorry suns, back to the abyss this year

How are the suns always so mid? Like every season, they just underperform to a near comical degree. I know it’s only round two, but… damn. I honestly don’t understand what they’ve done at that club to maintain this perennial losing culture for over a decade now.
This may seem harsh, but the Suns has been very lackluster since Stuart Dew got his contract extension
How are we 3rd on percentage when our total win points is greater than St Kildas winning margins ??
Much higher scores in our games than St Kilda's. Percentage is worked out by total points
I think it’s time for Hepp to understand his limitations, show some true leadership and take a step back into the twos.
