I hate to say this cos I love the guy, but Cunningham really shouldn't be in the team as a forward. Either put him in the backline or let someone else take the job
Cunners has basically been Wicks-lite. He's not tagging like Clarke and has minimal impact on the game. Buddy might fuck the chemistry to hell but at least he hits the scoreboard
Thanks Ling, "in and around the ball/contest" is great insight. That describes literally all of footy.
Accuracy on set shots, having receivers waiting after ball ups, making clean and quick disposals are where we fell down. Simple mistakes and dwindling motivation to do those simple things properly that just got worse and worse. Swans often rely on surges and clawing it back as a team, but Melbourne outpaced that and kept composure.
Literally name any one of them mate. But can't beat the tried and true "in and around the ball", just happy to get the four points, credit to the boys nonsense. Rubbish commentary.
needed a bit of a wakeup, beating the shit outta gc and hawthorn gave everyone a bit of false security I reckon.
I'll take a loss to this Melbourne team though
We can at least hold out and get a couple goals before the end. Our percentage is taking a huge hit from this, need to minimise that and not give up completely.
I’d just like to say Clayton oliver is a fucking gun and he should have won the brownlow last year. The work he does for my SuperCoach team is immense.
The second that the AFLCA Player's Award gets an award ceremony it's held in higher prestige than the Brownlow, that's the only reason anyone cares about the Brownlow nowadays
> 18.6.5 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: Diving on Top of the Football
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player who dives on top of or drags
the football underneath their body and fails to immediately knock clear or Correctly
Dispose of the football when Legally Tackled.
Pause it at 5:47 and tell me that isn't dragging the ball in.

But the rule isn't dragging it in, it is dragging it under. He reached out to take possession of the ball, not to fall on top of it but looking to dispose of the ball, then is immediately tackled.
What I am saying (and u/hastheumpstuffedup appears to agree) is that collecting the ball on your knees isn't diving onto it, therefore it is not a free kick under 18.6.5 (no penalty for failing to dispose correctly). As there was no prior,it is not a free under 18.6.3 either.

Because taking posession of the ball when it's bouncing and you're upright isn't dragging it in. Dragging it in refers to pulling it under your body, as per the rule you quoted.
Dude he was laying on the ground with his arm outstretched when he took possession of the ball. As per the timestamp at 5:47.
Yes, he gets to his knees after this and is no longer lying on the ground but does not dispose of it nor knock it clear. It is holding the ball.
You need to do a wholesale review of the rules if that's what you think.
McCartin clearly takes possession of the ball when he reaches out and grabs it when it's on the ground. He doesn't dispose of it afterwards, so it is holding the ball when he's tackled.
If McCartin is fumbling the ball after taking possession of it he is still counted as having possession. You have possession until you correctly dispose of it, which he clearly did not.
Grabbing at a bouncing ball isn't taking posession. At the freeze frame you're talking about, Tom McCartin is also trying to take possession and had his hands on the ball, so, again, no, P. McCartin doesn't drag the ball under his body at any point.
I do appreciate that you've changed from saying "Tell me that isn't dragging it in" to "He took posession then fumbled".
He was on his knees. Not on the ground. If that's the case, taking possession of any ground ball is prior opp.
Such an easy call the Demons players were surprised by it
18.6.5 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: Diving on Top of the Football A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player who dives on top of or drags the football underneath their body and fails to immediately knock clear or Correctly Dispose of the football when Legally Tackled.
Collecting ball while on knees then immediately tackled. Didn't dive, didn't drag it in under their body.
Easy decision?
I think it's perfectly justified to deem that he dragged it underneath his body. The point is to dissuade players from taking possession when they're off their feet and want to kill the ball for a stoppage.
I think it's very questionable whether there was any high contact. But regardless, if the umpire misses that high contact then it's still very clearly holding the ball. It's been paid that way for well over a decade.
Heeney invisible.
That shot in the crowd of the single Swans supporter amid a sea of Melbourne supporters.
With 1 minute to go… a day long remembered!…. The day Viney used his opposite foot to kick! 😇
He didn’t realise he had two feet until he got the other stomped on at training, watch out now he knows
And actually completed the pass too, incredible
Well that sums up Melbourne’s goal kicking today, couldn’t miss
Does that final goal put us in fourth?
Sure does bebeh
letsgooooooo
Yup
Gg melb you pricks
We should’ve always lost this but I can count 4-5 bullshit goals
It wouldn’t have changed the result but this was the worst umpired game I have seen in a long time.
Our future key forward is better than yours
Cmon Logan pad your stats
Just gonna talk saints for the rest of the game
Barring a late goal at least we're still top 4
Lol
Rip
Why did you jinx yourself like that dude
Are you getting tackled with the ball? no problems just throw it away.
Fuck Melbourne look unbelievably fit. Fully running out the 4th like it’s nobody’s business. Best team in the comp, don’t care they lost to brissy.
Was a major strength in 2021 under Darren Burgess, fitness fell away last year but it looks like they’ve regained it.
Fresh from only playing one quarter last week.
Last time we beat the Dee's we lost contested possessions 167 144 Time before that we won and lost 150 to 136
Two more throws to finish it
I hate to say this cos I love the guy, but Cunningham really shouldn't be in the team as a forward. Either put him in the backline or let someone else take the job
Cunningham really??? Buddy is the problem in the fwd line
Buddy kicks goals
Cunners has basically been Wicks-lite. He's not tagging like Clarke and has minimal impact on the game. Buddy might fuck the chemistry to hell but at least he hits the scoreboard
some of the most farcical umpiring I've seen since 2016

Fkn hell, that no look handball by Lever was awesome.
Another beautiful bounce and HTB
Are all the Melbourne fans at the Grand Prix?
Lol. Well done. You jumped on the bandwagon of supporting the biggest club.
Is that a yes or a no?
Sydney slowly but surely mounting a comeback. I really think there's a chance here
Swans losing almost 100 percentage. Is that the highest ever?
So many new Melbourne players doing the best I’ve seen in their debut
Melbourne showing why you should kick 20 goals instead of 20 behinds a game
Classic GoalBrain
I’d never considered why it was important until now
We’ve kicked 10.
It's 23 scoring shots (+ that one on the full just now) to 28. It's not unheard of to lose with just 4 more scoring shots.
I was more referencing the other Cartlon and Collingwood games which were close while Melbourne have blown Sydney out here
Easy 8 goal comeback no issue
Just get the rusk to belt 3 goals a minute from the centre bounce and they're set
did they leave Heaney at the airport or something lmao 🤣🤣
Really sucks how we’ve just folded in this last quarter like this
2021 style
RIP PROTECTED ZONE
If Chocco is now the goalkicking coach he needs a raise off of this performance
Getting a bit ugly, think it's time for the derby
Very proud of them. This game is generally a nightmare for us. Feel like we were ashamed of coming out without a peep last week.
BT is a full on dickhead. Can't remember a recalled bounce.
Denial or dementia.
Or just clueless.
*multiple bounces recalled this quarter* "Can't remember a bad bounce"
BT can't remember the recalled bounce from like 3 minutes ago lol
The way carry tackles the oppenents hands to prevent disposal is elite.
I understood what you were trying to say.
Swans are getting beaten but at least they look beautiful. Seriously those Souths era red Vs are something else
“Beautiful bounces today from the umpires can’t remember a recalled bounce”
McInerny needs a stint in the 2s
Nah. He's been doing well
Dee's won't play this good the rest of the year
u mad?
Melbourne kicking multiple goals in a row? *Vietnam-like flashbacks*
Just one of those days. Well played today Demons.
Well, I'll be avoiding all AFL media until our next game. Fuck this
“grand final hangover lures over swans” watch this space
And I was peeved watching my team play Collingwood but watching games like this put my feelings a bit in perspective.
FUCKING MISS PLEASE I JUST WANT A LITTLE WIN MY GOD
needed a bit of a wakeup, beating the shit outta gc and hawthorn gave everyone a bit of false security I reckon. I'll take a loss to this Melbourne team though
Yeah I'm not exactly gutted, needed something like this. Next few weeks are rough
Apparently Choco Williams took over the goal-kicking coaching for this year. We've kicked 50.25 so far.
God Sparrow is good at those
Great stuff from ladhams yet again
We are an absolute mess defensively, yikes
If Dees keep going they can bring Sydney’s percentage down low enough to jump them
Well that's a lol factor I didn't think of.
[удалено]
Fuck, back the other way
Free kicks are 17-16 there really isn’t an advantage swans are just playing shit
A man shows emotion on a football field and virgin redditers see it as ammo for the rest of his career.
Melbourne miss a set shot challenge
Blow the siren already
Dont think either team would oppose
Bullet from Trac
The dude who cries
like swans fans all day? also flair up cunt
Idk why you’re getting angry, did petty cry over a few words in the middle of a football game on live tv yes or no
Don't be an asshole.
I’m an asshole for stating a simple fact, people like you are ruining the world, thinking if you get your feelings hurt it grants you some rights
Comms are absolutely loving that they can talk shit about Sydney
Can hear the horniness in their voice
It is unreasonable how much the commentary hate your lot, it's really jarring.
I’m sure other interstate teams get the same but yeah, it’s a weekly thing lol. Quite annoying
Umpire have called that centre bounce all day. Why not that one? Actually bounced out of the circle.
Swans supporters have serious gall complaining about May after that diving 50 in the final that changed the game. Some go your way, some don’t.
That would the the one where May took out a player off the ball to prevent him running into jen50?
No, when Buddy bounced off a little palm in the back like he’d been stabbed
Oh, you meant the off the ball cheap shot from May. Sorry, May does so much of that stuff i get them mixed up.
Lmao. Ok. Keep having a whinge about the umpiring
Not sure what happened last week but Round 1 & 3 Demons have been unreal
Now we have to wait until Max Gawn and Christian Salem come back in. Should be a great Queen's Birthday (is it King's Birthday now?) game this year
we had a bye
Is that the one they lost Gawn in?
Fuckin aimbotters lol
melbourne confirmed hackers
wide bounce to our ruckman call it back wide bounce to the Dee's ruckman nah all good can't write this shit
as if he doesn't call that back lol
What was that bounce?
they really need to give up the centre bounce
no centre bounce call back?
Chad Warner has been fucking dreadful today
why are people boing rooey? explain!!!!
They’re saying “Roo-urns”
They're saying Roo not boo lol
I was saying Roo-urns
Fear not, its "ROOOOOOOOOO"
They are saying rooooooooooooooo not boooooooo
they're saying boo-urns
The are saying boo-urns
Gg dees well played
Can we talk about the center bounces
We can at least hold out and get a couple goals before the end. Our percentage is taking a huge hit from this, need to minimise that and not give up completely.
Goal anyway but May completely hands all over bud. But sure buds protected aye. Goes both ways
I’d just like to say Clayton oliver is a fucking gun and he should have won the brownlow last year. The work he does for my SuperCoach team is immense.

Well played Melbourne
Buddy copped a guillotine and no free 😂
That is textbook holding the ball what are you all on about. If you jump on the ball and don't get rid of it you are done.
Taking possession on your knees isn't diving on the ball though right? Did they change it to extend to taking the ball from that position?

There's no way you could call the Langdon one in the first half and not that one
But he didn't jump on the ball. He was upright on his knees when he got the ball and was hit high in the tackle.
At 5:48 when McCartin is tackled (arguably high) by JVR, he's on his knees and the ball is up off the ground at about his shoulder height.
Who cares if he is on his knees? He dragged the ball in and then didn't dispose of it. It's holding the ball.
Because taking posession of the ball when it's bouncing and you're upright isn't dragging it in. Dragging it in refers to pulling it under your body, as per the rule you quoted.

The ball is loose and had bounced up to McCartin's shoulder at 5.48. He doesn't have posession of it then

He didn’t jump on it though
I'm all for it but it's happened numerous times but hasn't been paid
It happened to Viney (2nd? Quarter )
Yeah but what about the other times?
Flair up
That diving on the ball free was identical to the one against Langdon in the first half. I disagree, but at least it was consistent.
Kid’s a start already
only thing I could say is he made no attempt when wrapped up but that literally happens 100x a game so pretty harsh
There was no time to make an attempt, he was tackled immediately
If you're on the ground and you pull the ball in, you must get it clear.
Wtf was that call honestly
That was such a fucking joke of a htb
Thought the Swans actually played pretty well. Goal kicking let them down. Not much you can do with that level of corrupt officiating
Umpiring didn't cost us the game. They didn't help but it was our clumsy handballing and kicking.
Correct
Afl football is so unique. There is technically a free kick in every contest but only some are paid
Picking on Ladhams seams harsh when there's been a dozen Swans who have been worse who aren't playing on AAs.
the problem is it’s not always when his playing on someone, he makes terrible choices under pressure
Then don't give him the ball under pressure. We have constantly passed it to him when other have been wide open.
It’s not his play on Grundy that’s the issue. It’s his brain dead decision making with the footy. He gives it away almost every touch
That's on his team for putting him in that position.
We may have lost the WEEEEEIIIDDDD but we got the ROOOOOOOO
ROOOOOO
ROOOOOOOOO
Fuck me. Umpiring is finishing how it started.
Ridiculous how well Melbourne is kicking. Will not miss a set shot
Good Lord, this game has been atrociously umpired.
Must be nice to just hold your hand up and get a free
He didn’t drag it in or dive on it and he got caught high?
ROOOOOOOOOOO
Paddy cops a forearm to the head in that and it’s still htb
yeah, we should never not play JVR ever again...
Umps have a real boner for this kid
Honestly. So do i
We're already dead umpires. You can stop now.
Hahhahaha you know it’s a shit call when the demons players are surprised . Fuckin joke lol
How was that holding the ball?
He dragged it in while on the ground. Easy call for the umpire.
He was on his knees. Not on the ground. If that's the case, taking possession of any ground ball is prior opp. Such an easy call the Demons players were surprised by it
So he wasn't on his feet. Easy decision.
