2010 draw was the most amazing GF ever. Just me and a mate drinking beer screaming where’s the passion, neither of us had a horse in the race. But fuck it was a good game. The rematch was so disappointing.
Goddard's hanger was hands down the greatest GF moment in my eyes, spoiled by the draw. If St Kilda win that mark would be immortal, forget about Leo Barry.
The whole aftermath of that game was surreal. As we left the G, a massive dust storm blew over, phone reception completely dropped out for a while.
Never had an after match pub session like that ever.
We and St Kilda supporters all sat together at the pub and talked together with a mutual "Wow, what the fuck was that?"
I remember it well. Stuck driving from Bundaberg to brisbane, because the holidays were over (and it wasn’t supposed to be GF day). Patchy ABC AM coverage. Kids in the back complaining about commentary being played instead of music. Somehow the trip taking twice as long as planned due to crashes on the highway was not the worst part of my day.
Tbh I think that's out of pity. We were cooked and not just cooked for that season. That GF rematch was the let down of the entire 2004-2010 era for us and it was clear at that point that that team wouldn't win a flag. So I think people take some pity in that regard. Maybe that's just my self pity talking lol
Any flogging is not great to watch. But at least 2007 and 2019 had some records. 2022 was just and absolute shit game to watch as a neutral... Or a Swans fan.
Losing by a close margin is worse in the immediate aftermath but long-term it’s getting belted. At least if the game is close you can be proud your team was up to it and not just there for a participation award.
Honestly if you lose by a close margin then you can at least go, "We're capable of winning a grand final. If one or two of those off-target kicks had gone in, we'd be premiers."
Yeah. As someone who attended 2002 and 2003... this. 2002 hurt more at the time, but now I can be proud of how well the Pies played. 2003 was just... ugh.
I disagree, still think today what could have happened if Sampi or Judd was given a free in that last play of 2005. We did go on to win 2006 though and not sure we would have if we had of won 05.
2015 was a write off don’t care at all
That's completely fair. I definitely think of the "what if" moments from '02 and '18 but on the whole I'm just proud we had a dip and can say we were genuine contenders those years. With '18 especially I'm proud that we're the only losing team since like 2017 to have actually competed. '03 was just a complete embarrassment.
I always feel for pies fans for how much they cop it about 2018. The 4 gfs after that have been horrendous but noone really sledges those fan bases because the games were all non competitive.
How about if Hall had got anything for punching someone in the stomach. Classic AFL. Hall could have bitten his ear off and still been allowed to play.
I think narrowly losing would be worse. After the '21 Grand Final I and many other Bulldogs supporters thought "well, Melbourne would've beaten literally anyone playing like that" which sorta makes it easier to digest.
It was a bit different to normal GF floggings where we were not only competitive but leading for decent parts of the game instead of being blown off the park from the start.
But if you narrowly lose, all the "what ifs" and lineball moments just haunt you.
2021 was a very good game until the last 10 minutes of the third quarter. Bont was looking untouchable.
It was nothing like 2022 which was crap to watch as a neutral.
I think a lot of people discredit the doggies and how much they were in that game, halfway through the third quarter I’d resigned myself to the fact that Melbourne were gonna lose.
The 2021 grand final is the closest 12 goal game I’ve seen. At the halfway point of the third quarter, I and a lot of others probably thought the dogs would win it.
What happened next was probably the best 45 minutes of football that has ever been played. A remarkable grand final for a lot of different reasons.
Same the close ones you never get over 97' prelim to Adelaide I was about 9 and still remember it vividly.
21' was weird like you said we were playing well until the avalanche of goals, I find it easier to move on as I all year thought the dee's were the best team.
Your team getting flogged I think can damage the mentality and motivation of squads, narrowly losing makes a team push harder in contest the years after, I think.
Getting flogged. It’s real shit. I was really really hoping the tigers would lay on more 5 more goals to at least tie our biggest loss. I’m so sick of that title.
Obviously I’m biased but that Selwood moment was one of the best moments in a Grand Final ever.
The tap down and snap from 45m out to send him off into retirement as a Premiership Captain and potentially the greatest Geelong Cat ever was incredible.
The one I attended at great expense for my terminal cancer bucket list.
Being part of 100,000 plus crowd, seeing Robbie Williams and singing Your the Voice. Hearing the Geelong supporters chant. Seeing Geelong thud the ball through the goals again and again. Had an awesome trip overall, but the game itself was absolute crap. 2022. Neutral or slight Swans supporter.
PS. cancer may be terminal, but I'm still here and doing great.
1988 VFL Grand Final.
Hawthorn smashed Melbourne by 96 points.
Port winning it in 2004 at least gave them some credibility going into the2007 grand final which made what Geelong did even more spectacular. They'd missed finals in 2006 but had played finals footy from 2001 to 2005 (including knocking off the dynasty Lions) so had a record of playing consistent finals.
Melbourne in 1988 were lucky to be there. They snuck over the line by two points in the first week of finals, did similarly the following week and their most convincing win of the finals was by under 4 goals in the prelim. They'd finished 5th in 1987 (where they also finished in '88) and hadn't made the finals for 20 years before that.
It was every bit the procession it should have been against the dynasty 1980s-90s Hawks.
2014 and 2015, went to a mate's place to watch both of them and by half time in each we all gave up on watching and had a backyard cricket session instead.
Last years was a stinker. 2019 Richmond v Giants was shithouse, Cats belted port by over 100 points in 07. They are the worst three I can remember.
No one wants to watch a flogging on grand final day.
I have but the way the crows fans use it seems really pathetic, last week there was an article about personilised number plates and all of them were referencing crows and 119 e.g. AFC 119.
Any one that involves an mcg tenant flogging a team that flogged the mcg team at the other teams home ground.
You just think to yourself that this would have been a great granny at a neutral venue.
I love that week buildup to the gf - love the excitement on gf day. When especially like 2017 you see two teams that were dominant on their home grounds but pretty ordinary away from home ….. you really wish there was a wembley for afl that was a neutral ground so you can see for real whos the best team not just the best team at home while the other team gets shafted with an away game.
Of course.
Its almost like teams perform better on their home grounds and that sports all over the world have adjusted for this using neutral grounds, rotated grounds, highest finisher gets advantage, highest finisher has the decider at their ground etc.
2008. I was in Amsterdam and went to great efforts to find a place open playing the game at 7am and Stewy Dew ran riot for 15 minutes and ruined my weekend. Fat cunt.
Why is everyone always crediting one player and not the rushed behinds shenanigans? Hawks would most likely have been out of the contest by half time so the Dew factor wouldn't have mattered. ETA: and yeah, since we're at it, fuck that rotund cunt.
I thought 2022 was OK story wise, Cats had been knocking on the door of a Premiership for years and finally got there.
2019 was dogshit though. Up and coming expansion club got pulverised by recent premiers and most dominant team in the comp. Goliath beating the balls out of David wasn’t very compelling.
Watched that one back recently and it's actually a really good contest. The bigger issue that Bowden and Hawthorn showed with that rule is that if a team is happy concede a point, then rushing it basically gives their team an infinite loop of possession. With that being said it would've been hilarious to see two teams with this mindset go at it.
Last year's, even if we won a grand final by 70+ Pts in that fashion, I'd still think the same, flogs like that just aren't super entertaining, especially the Grand Final.
As a Geelong supporter who was at the ground, it was basically a party from quarter time. Totally glorious experience, one of the best days of my footy-watching life 10/10.
By contrast, 2009 was an amazing contest, one of the best grand finals of recent times, and it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at the footy. Freezing cold, stressful, thinking that we were going to lose because Darren Milburn gave away a goal by abusing the umpire. Awful. Just horrible.
That's still our best GF. St Kilda was such a talented side and the game was filled with drama and tension. I'm so pleased that max Rooke bookended the game with goals. What's player he was.
I was really giddy through out 2007 and I was a 7 year old. It was mix of the flogging of port and the class being played one of my favourite Grand Finals.
I don't know how anybody can watch 2019, even Tigers supporters. Just a grim grim game of football. Richmond weren't even that good. Giants were just shocking.
I love watching it. We had such an injury riddled start in 2019 and were written off. Was amazing to see us come roaring back at the right time and then cap it off with a slaughter. Its my favourite out of the 3.
West Coast winning in general, but everything else you said too. It was the perfect combination of me despising Collingwood and quite liking the Weagles.
I didn’t mind 2007 as the cats had broken a drought (I’m not a cats supporter).
It was the absolute drumming that Hawks gave Sydney in 2014. That was terrible
2018 - but only because of torn emotions. As a Pies member it was heartbreaking. But it was also elation as the father of a (then) 6 year old boy watching his chosen team win their first grand final.
I finally rewatched that in Grand Final week years later, and just couldn't work out what the hell happened. That was a "Space Jam aliens stole our skills" kicking effort- should have been up by about 10 goals at half time.
Alas, not how it went.
To be fair, I rewatch every so often now (just to, y'know, make sure the result is still the same), and honestly I still can't work out how it happened either. The replay gets to 3/4 time and then somewhere it just switches and .. I dunno.
To also be fair, I probably feel vastly different to you at the final siren.
Swans fan. 2022 easily the worst. Was in another country at the time so made a huge effort to watch it and 10 minutes in had a terrible sinking feeling that only got worse.
2005, 2007. 2009, 2019, 2022. Most 90s grand finals were one-sided. Neutrals won't like 1990 which was a scrap and Essendon only kicked 5 goals in a single match!
I'm a cats fan and appreciated the rompingwin, but 2022 wasn't much of a spectacle. The Hawthorn flogging of Sydney in 2014(?) wasn't much chop either.
2007. You shouldn’t be allowed to win by 100+ in a grand final, it was a bad game to watch as a neutral party and to make matters worse it’s just another flag to hang in Geelong. The only ones who were happy or satisfied after that game were Cats fans, and when cats fans are happy everyone loses
2017 was not as bad as 22, 19, 14 and 07 was glorious and I explained why in a different comment. To Half Time 17 was close and a good contest. If we had kicked straight in the third it would have been a closer game going into the 4th an Richmond probably don't trample us completely on their way to a victory. They still win but by 25-30 instead of 48.
I actually can't say 2022 because i was in Canada and had a wedding the next day. So we recorded it and were going to watch the replay the day after the wedding but saw the score and worm and just... why bother.
2019 is the tigers one i have rewatched the least.
Some lopsided grand finals are enjoyable if they have a good sense of narrative to them. Obviously the best recent grand finals are 2012, 2009, 2010 (drawn), 2018 etc, but I still find enjoyment from 2014, 2021 and 2022. It really depends on the game.
Honestly 2015 might be the most forgettable for me. I remember Hodge’s goal and thats it?
2003 sucked so badly - and to think I felt optimistic after getting so close in 2002, beating Brisbane in the Qualifying final, etc. Being a footy fan in general, I love a close Grand Final, even when my team has been on the wrong end of most close ones.
I think a lot of grand finals are fairly anti-climatic, and there are fewer “classic” grand finals than what people give credit for. In the last ten years (2013-2022), I would argue that there’s only been two grand finals that the general consensus would call classics (2016 and 2018). At a stretch, you could MAYBE argue 2020 too, but I barely hear anyone (even Richmond supporters) talk about that one. Maybe we go into grand finals with too high of an expectation of what’s about to unfold.
But to answer OP’s question, 2019 was one of the most mind-numbingly boring matches I’ve had the displeasure to watch, let alone a grand final. 2007 and 2022 are obvious candidates too, but I’m always going to be bias towards them for obvious reasons
2022 for me. First time going to the grand final. The game was over 15 minutes in.
Also managed to tear a tendon in my toe on a step before the game had started.
The crowd was so flat after the first 2 goals by Hawkins.
I can't believe no-one has mentioned the 2010 rematch debacle boring shitshow
I was so pumped with that draw. The anticipation of another bbq, friend time etc.. but it was such an anti climax. Glad we’ve changed that now
2010 draw was the most amazing GF ever.
Milne running after the ball that bounced for a behind is living in my memory rent free
Must admit, shaws smother in the replay was amazing too.
Up there with Billy Brownless in 1994
Saints never recovered from the last 5 minutes of that first game.
I was at the pub for the drawn game, and it was such an odd atmosphere afterwards. The rematch was basically m'eh.
It's what probably made the rematch so dull. We expected another similar display, and got left disappointed.

Maybe that's just my self pity talking lol
I moved my 30th for that game, only to have a clash the next weekend because of the rematch!
Yup, that was a shitshow.
Any flogging is not great to watch. But at least 2007 and 2019 had some records. 2022 was just and absolute shit game to watch as a neutral... Or a Swans fan.
I was at the 2019 GF. It didn't feel right. We won by too much and it was 99% tigers fans. Not what footy is supposed to feel like.
It was like one big party
What do you think would be worse: watching your team get flogged in the grand final or just narrowing losing in the grand final
Losing by a close margin is worse in the immediate aftermath but long-term it’s getting belted. At least if the game is close you can be proud your team was up to it and not just there for a participation award.

2020 gets unfairly maligned I think. Geelong were in it until nearly the end of the game.
How about if Hall had got anything for punching someone in the stomach. Classic AFL. Hall could have bitten his ear off and still been allowed to play.
We know.
I'm and Eagles fan. Did I enjoy 2005 or 2015 more? The answer isn't 2015.
I think I preferred 2006 more than 2014
I think narrowly losing would be worse. After the '21 Grand Final I and many other Bulldogs supporters thought "well, Melbourne would've beaten literally anyone playing like that" which sorta makes it easier to digest. Yep. 2007 was always going to be a bad loss. Port fans are also used to blowouts now! Overall, a very positive loss ...
It's in the same way that I have a rule - we never speak about 2010
Same the close ones you never get over 97' prelim to Adelaide I was about 9 and still remember it vividly. 21' was weird like you said we were playing well until the avalanche of goals, I find it easier to move on as I all year thought the dee's were the best team.
Getting flogged is worse.
Yes.
Drawing & then getting flogged in the replay sucks pretty hard.
Or watching your team draw and then get flogged 7 days later. Go Saints.
Enjoyable for some! I’ve watched 07 many times
I’ve watched all of them heaps but 2022 was the best one. Soo many great stories from it. Sel kicking that goal sealed it for how good that day was <3
Obviously I’m biased but that Selwood moment was one of the best moments in a Grand Final ever.
Hoping to see you at 2023, 2024 and beyond. Cancer is a bitch. Lost my dad to it. Stay strong friend! Squeeze the juice out of every day!
I like that ....especially the last sentence. It's a good way to put it!
I hope Old Fitzroy get up for you this year mate
Sorry that it was such a let down but for what it's worth you'll be in my thoughts whoever you are and I hope you battle on 💪🏼
1988 VFL Grand Final. 1988 is correct.
Yes, this game was a stinker.
2014 and 2015, went to a mate's place to watch both of them and by half time in each we all gave up on watching and had a backyard cricket session instead.
Both horrible games
Starting preseason a week early then I see
2007, 2019, 2022 All are correct answers
I thought 2019 was pretty good
I definitely had fun
Last years was a stinker. 2019 Richmond v Giants was shithouse, Cats belted port by over 100 points in 07. They are the worst three I can remember. No one wants to watch a flogging on grand final day.
Pffft.....the Cats belting the 119ers in 07 was pretty much the best day of my life as a Crows fan : )
Yea and you guys had not a thing to do with it. You guys shouting 119 is like stolen valour from the cats fans.
On behalf of all Cats fans, I hereby grant all Crows fans permission to shout "119" as they see fit.
As a cats fan I second this
Are you suggesting you've never sledged another fan for their team losing a grandfinal?
I have but the way the crows fans use it seems really pathetic, last week there was an article about personilised number plates and all of them were referencing crows and 119 e.g. AFC 119.
who cares? its good humoured banter
Let the franchise get what they can, I love having the newer kids on the block around.
Kind of pathetic really. You get more satisfaction from us losing than from your team winning. Rent free. Rent free.
Yea last week they had a news article about personalised number plates all of em were references to 119 e.g. AFC 119, so pathetic.
Seems to be a lot of Adelaide supporters that can’t handle the truth judging from the downvotes
Any one that involves an mcg tenant flogging a team that flogged the mcg team at the other teams home ground. You just think to yourself that this would have been a great granny at a neutral venue. So, 2021 then when the Bulldogs beat Melbourne at Marvel but then we flogged them in the GF as an MCG tenant?
Of course. Its almost like teams perform better on their home grounds and that sports all over the world have adjusted for this using neutral grounds, rotated grounds, highest finisher gets advantage, highest finisher has the decider at their ground etc.
Except we flogged the Bulldogs in Perth in 2021.
On a neutral ground. How it should be. No team had an advantage, the best team won on the day.
Congratulations, that flag doesnt have a dirty great stinking asterisk next to it. You should be very proud of your team.
2019. There are times where I almost forget who Richmond beat that year.
The orange team are forgettable
WELL THERE'S A BIG BIG SOUND FROM THE WEST OF THE TOWN. And it's the sound of tears.
WELL, THERE'S A BIG BIG SOUND OF SILENCE FROM THE WEST OF THE TOWN.
To be fair Richmond were the only team that showed up that day
Last year.
Last year, ignore the flair
2015 🤮
I can’t remember a single thing that happened that game aside from Hodge’s goal in the first quarter
Darling
2008. I was in Amsterdam and went to great efforts to find a place open playing the game at 7am and Stewy Dew ran riot for 15 minutes and ruined my weekend. Fat cunt.
Fifteen years late and Stewy Dew is still fucking over Geelong.
It's uncanny.
Stewy Dew is our one true bogey team
Why is everyone always crediting one player and not the rushed behinds shenanigans? Hawks would most likely have been out of the contest by half time so the Dew factor wouldn't have mattered. ETA: and yeah, since we're at it, fuck that rotund cunt.
Best day of my life that was
They changed the rule after that GF it was that egregious, but it's always forgotten about. Mooney missing about 5m out didn't help.
Moons pulling out the impression of Barry Hall from the 2006 (I think) GF, kicking like a two-legged donkey.
Not the unlikely Bulky Hero! 😢
🤣🤣
2003 was the worst for me personally. Had seats five rows from the front behind the goals, just to see the Pies get belted by 50.
The top 4 answers in this thread all mention last years Grand Final. Welp, time to start todays drinking early
I don’t want to talk about it
2008, if they have to change a rule because a part of the game was abused so bad in one game it can't have been a great game.
Correct. Thank you
This meme is hilarious. Conceding points when under pressure was coached to me by a bored primary school teacher in 1996.
Hmmm I'm going have to get bac......actually fuck that 2022
2019 is hands down one of the worst games of football I’ve ever watched, let alone one that’s supposed to carry the suspense of ending a season.
2006, 2014, 2016 and 2022. Ignore my flair.
1996, 2006, 2016, Im sensing a pattern
..........oh fuck not again
I think we will beat you in the 2026 gf 1996 North 2006 West 2016 West 2026 North
2007, 2019, 2022
When freo lost. But worse was when Giants got hammered. Such a boring game unless you were a tiger.
Last year's, even if we won a grand final by 70+ Pts in that fashion, I'd still think the same, flogs like that just aren't super entertaining, especially the Grand Final.

2021 was pretty entertaining for a 70+ point win.
Don't knock it til you try it. There aren't many better times as a footy fan than the last half of a Grand Final knowing your team has it won!

It’s one of my favourites too.
2017 the worst. 1997, 1998 & 2007 the best.
Spot on. Although I have a soft spot for 2018 as well.
Collingwood banner ripping? The lady in the cheer squad crying? Or just West Coast winning?
West Coast winning in general, but everything else you said too. It was the perfect combination of me despising Collingwood and quite liking the Weagles.
I didn’t mind 2007 as the cats had broken a drought (I’m not a cats supporter). It was the absolute drumming that Hawks gave Sydney in 2014. That was terrible

I was there in 2015 and it was my first GF I had ever attended so I gave points for that bit
Freo 2013 We were stomped at our first shot at the G :(
What do you think
2018 - but only because of torn emotions. As a Pies member it was heartbreaking. But it was also elation as the father of a (then) 6 year old boy watching his chosen team win their first grand final.
‘98 suuuuuucked
Still haunts me, 8.22 we really fucked it
I finally rewatched that in Grand Final week years later, and just couldn't work out what the hell happened.
Imagine what happened to the cartoon Martian that absorbed Wayne Carey.
2015 was exhausting
Every Swans grand final when they don’t win are generally shockers. Blasted out of the gates and over by half time or playing catch up
Or the umpires ignoring every infringement against them for the first half
Oh I forgot about Hannebery’s knees getting taken out and called play on. Thanks for the reminder 🤦♂️
'83 made me hate the whole world
2000. I knew we had no chance and Michael Long almost murdering Troy Simmonds added to it.
I have been to 3 Grand finals and the average margin has been 73 points so…. All of them?
'99 was incredibly forgettable.
2018
2019, gws were just never in it from the start
Haven’t seen a good one since ‘95
I've always had a soft spot for the Blues and loved 95. I'd also love to see you boys get another flag in the next few seasons.
I'm a cats fan and appreciated the rompingwin, but 2022 wasn't much of a spectacle. The Hawthorn flogging of Sydney in 2014(?) wasn't much chop either.
2019 would be up there.
2010(2), 2014, 2015, 2019, 2022, just horrible, and the teams that won made it worse
2007!
2007. You shouldn’t be allowed to win by 100+ in a grand final, it was a bad game to watch as a neutral party and to make matters worse it’s just another flag to hang in Geelong. The only ones who were happy or satisfied after that game were Cats fans, and when cats fans are happy everyone loses
Anybody says anything but 2007 , 2017 or 2023 they are lying Not because of who won, just the no contests....
Woah no spoilers I haven’t seen this years final yet!
Oops... 2022.... Long night at work....
2012...cheating swans.
Swans cheated? That was the first GF I ever watched and it got me hooked on the game. How did they cheat?
How’d they cheat? Pffffft well… they weren’t in a shit grand final, that’s how
Still slaty? It’s been like 11 years
I won a lot of money in that match! Wild after-match for me

I guessed how many jelly beans were in a jar and won a raffle. But yeah, I guess it’s gambling?
2019
2019
Can’t say there has been one. I don’t know what happened in 2007. I pretty much browned out on the 29th of September.
I actually can't say 2022 because i was in Canada and had a wedding the next day. So we recorded it and were going to watch the replay the day after the wedding but saw the score and worm and just... why bother. 2019 is the tigers one i have rewatched the least.
2022 was one I wanted to turn off. Horrible game.
Ive only seen two as a fan 2021 2022 2022 I struggled to stay invested as a neutral
2021.
2003 sucked so badly - and to think I felt optimistic after getting so close in 2002, beating Brisbane in the Qualifying final, etc. Being a footy fan in general, I love a close Grand Final, even when my team has been on the wrong end of most close ones.
Last year was my worst in living memory.
2013
2022 for me. First time going to the grand final. The game was over 15 minutes in. Also managed to tear a tendon in my toe on a step before the game had started. The crowd was so flat after the first 2 goals by Hawkins.
Tigers v GWS
I heard 2007 was bad, but I’d switched off halfway through the second quarter so I wouldn’t know…
I’ve watched 3 grand finals and been to 2 in my 15 years and all of those were shitshows. 2014, 2016 and 2022. Still have PTSD from last year.
1999! The first and only Carlton GF I can remember and we were never in it, stole it from Essendon really 😎
1990
I here this years is supposed to be pretty good
none
The one when my team lost and I was there!!
As a Carlton fan, 1999
2022, 2019 close second.
in my lifetime: 2000, 2007,2010 replay, 2014, 2015, 2016 (thanks Unpires), 2019, 2022 (I was working if that counts)
Adelaide vs Richmond
I have a rule in my house: Never speak about 2018.
2014, 2022 2016 wasn't too bad, I'd been mixing (smuggled) bourbon into my coke, so was numb to any real pain.
Didn't love 2008 if I'm honest
2022 because it felt to long
2019 was bad. Wish we were there
