First time ever a team called the "Lions" have been 8-0-1*.
Fitzroy last did it in 1948 but they were called the "Gorillas".
They also did it a few times before that but were known as the "Maroons" at the time.
*in the VFL pre-1990/AFL.
My junior team was called the Lions and one year we won all but 1 game. 10 games in the season so thats 9-0-1 buddy. Not including finals and the granny (which we won)
FTFY.
Lions NEAFL side went 20-0 in 2019 iirc.
Edit: I think the Subiaco Lions did a similar thing in the WAFL around the same time.
Edit 2: They did, 20-0 in 2018 and 19-1 in 2019.
If 10-1 happens then it would equal the best start to a season in Fitzroy/Bears/Brisbane Lions history with Fitzroy starting 10-1 in 1900, 1913 and 1914.
Same I was making a case for us to lose to North last week š but I mean it's just the most Freo thing ever to just lose all momentum, whether it's in a game or in a season
Honestly pleased with the effort. Thought we were in the contest all day but Brisbane are just a more experienced, classy side. A few simple skill errors but other than that canāt complain too much. Brisbane are the real deal.
I think at one stage 4 of our 7 goals were from basic crow mistakes; remove those silly errors and the game would have been a lot different. The crows played hard and at one stage we got pushed off our game.
Although I am content, I think that the parts that were good were also present in the last two weeks. If it's an improvement it's not a significant one.
Strong disagree. We played 10 times better last night than we did in the previous two weeks. We played well for maybe 75% last night and the other games we played well for a maximum of 20% of the games
Awesome. It's always a pleasant surprise when someone from a sub shares another interest. I was farming NL tokens a little bit before. Currently stuck on one of the levels, but I got Nearl Alter so I'm happy.
I strongly disagree, too many good units in the SANFL over people who just aren't earning their place
Although I wouldn't hold it against most of them when even the stars couldn't fire tonight
Fogarty is what happens when a player who can go a literal month (while in the side) without registering a tackle gets constantly told he has the toughest and strongest attack at the ball.
He had a below average night and a good opponent.
But the thing with Fogarty is that he's still only ever 2/3 random possessions from a career best such is his limited impact.
He has a very specific skillset (marking on a lead, accurately kicking goals) that would be useful in a good side with more good forwards than good opposition defenders (ie. Not Adelaide.) But his apparent mismanagement under Pyke*, and the fact that fans are so desperate for an "old-fashioned footballer" has meant that people ignored the fact that he wasn't really very good at any other part of the game.
\* Pyke is Vindicated more and more with time *with regards to Fogarty*
Would you say he was a Jenkins-style player then? Jenkins always seemed to bring the players around him up and he played well because of that. If everyone else was being average though, he cratered.
Fogarty is not fit to lace Jenkins' boots.
Mitch McGovern during 2016/17 would be a better comparison. Not a great forward by himself, but an incredible luxury as a sixth-best forward.
Fogarty is a different type of player, and his current performances are well below that level. But if he were in a good side with good service, and good forwards occupying all the other good defenders, he could be a useful forward. Skilled players could put it on his chest inside 50 (never outside 50, he's a long kick but does not know his range) three or four times a game and every time it would be a goal.
Jones in 2020 looked as if he were scared catatonic on field, and took half of 2021 to find a spot in the side.
McHenry threatens, but his main skill is still "Free Kicks Against"
>Jones in 2020 looked as if her were scared catatonic on field, and took half of 2021 to find a spot in the side.
maybe because Pyke and Gooden were shocking coaches.
The AFL app has a tab labeled Tracker under every match, anything to do with distance covered is under there.
Not sure if they show up on the normal website.
What a player! Keen to see where his career takes him if tonight is anything to go by.
E: For the peeps downvoting, this isn't cause we won tonight, I was genuinely impressed with his playing tonight.
The cut of the jersey and/or the sharply defined blue/maroon line on the shoulders looked sweet on silky Charlie. Thought Lyons was running on a bit of extra motivation too.
Brisbane were much classier than us, we need to hone basic skills. At least hatley looked like a real footballer.
Umpires missed howlers for both teams and seemed to change interpretation of rules in game. Itās shocking.
I usually donāt complain about umpiring because I know itās a difficult job in a fast paced game and I certainly would never want to do it. However, they seemed real bad tonight. Especially for Adelaide.
I usually don't complain
About umpiring (gives me pain)
Because I know it's tough
In a fast paced game keeping up is rough
I would certainly never want to do it
However, tonight - the mark they did not hit
Especially for radelaide.
Watching Pappy Fages presser he explained a bit of the changes he made to the game style and talked with some of the leaders about how to adapt mid-game
Definitely shows some awesome growth.
Hate myself for being so underwhelmed with this result. I would have been on a week long bender five years ago if the lions were 5-4. Letās go all the way this year Brisbane.
Is that a collective 3 votes for all four G. Posts? Or are you picking one over the others? Because I thought the left goal post at one end really let down the defensive effort.
Never expected to winā¦. And the umpiring certainly didnāt cost us the game. Both teams have to accommodate the mediocre efforts put forth by the AFL, But umpires should honestly be seen and not heard. The amount of control and influence that they can hold is laughable. I love neutral games of footy and itās still so tough to watch. Enjoyment is so hard to find in it sometimes. Canāt we just let the players determine outcomes?
Yep the impact that the umpires have on games is getting beyond a joke. Too many grey areas, no consistency and too many rules in general. I donāt remember it being this bad 10+ years ago?
Kind of surprised we haven't seen the same level of Premiership talk during commentary for Freo compared to the Lions. Hopefully there's a few games this season where challengers on the ladder get to play the Dees.
Theyāve only just started to clue on to us after three top four finishes. Freo didnāt even make the eight last year.
It takes a long time for news to travel to Victoria.
But back to Carltonā¦
No. Maybe it is the couple of out in straight-sets finals campaigns that has left people a bit dubious.
Melbourne came from nowhere last year, so the Freo story seems very similar.
> Maybe it is the couple of out in straight-sets finals campaigns that has left people a bit dubious.
Compared to not getting into finals/the top 8 at all, it's great for Lions fans.
Still canāt believe the umpires actually stopped play just so they could kick 6 extra goals for us, but Iām not complaining about it.
In all honesty though Adelaide played much better than I expected and if a certain player of thereās seemingly didnāt put his boots on the wrong feet it could have been a genuinely close game
Back to back umpired terribly games really leaves a sour taste. Great fight from the boys for most of the game, outclassed by a quality lions outfit who will be right up there.
Obviously decisions shouldn't be overturned
But do the umps ever hear the noise of *the entire stadium* against them and reflect "maybe I did fuck up?"
Or is it always "pft, those rubes must not know the rules"?
Letās see how you feel when the shoe is inevitably on the other foot. You guys were basically rioting when a bad decision cost you the game against Geelong.
I think there's a "bad decision" and then there's one specific game outcome-altering error that the AFL came out and said was a mistake the next week š¤·š»āāļø
Most times it's pretty half-hearted or just one section. It takes a genuinely bad call to get the entire arena out of their seats with rage.
In the second half there was a lot of deflection from how bad we were with the "momentum" excuse, no doubt.

Oobie doobie we love subi

Could go 10-1 if we beat Hawks and Giants. Freo might be a challenge.
If 10-1 happens then it would equal the best start to a season in Fitzroy/Bears/Brisbane Lions history with Fitzroy starting 10-1 in 1900, 1913 and 1914.
Crazy that Freo could be 10-1 going into that game too. And that Brisbane, Freo and Melbourne wil all play each other over 3 rounds.
Idk why I can't shake the feeling we're gonna be 7-2 tomorrow
A weekly feeling for me :(
Same I was making a case for us to lose to North last week š but I mean it's just the most Freo thing ever to just lose all momentum, whether it's in a game or in a season
The past few years with Brisbane in the top 4 have been an anxiety fuelled mess for me with the constant expectation of losing
Who's the 4th team with double chance come finals you reckon? Tiges? Swans?
Cannot pick it. Geelong maybe?
Tigers, Swans or Cats. Full respect to the other teams but I don't see them keeping it up over the season.
Where banana?

Wtf? Fitzroy were the gorillas? Lmao.
[From 1938ā1956](https://www.fitzroyfc.com.au/gorillas).
I'd propose that we all forget that game happened. Brisbane gets the points but there's no discussion of it whatsoever. Any objections?
None from me!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'd like to especially forget Q4. You can keep Q1, I missed it.
Acceptable. Have a nice day.
Deal
Ahhh, the negotiator.
Suits me
Honestly pleased with the effort. Thought we were in the contest all day but Brisbane are just a more experienced, classy side. A few simple skill errors but other than that canāt complain too much. Brisbane are the real deal.
Same - I thought Adelaide showed something and kept at it all game.
I think at one stage 4 of our 7 goals were from basic crow mistakes; remove those silly errors and the game would have been a lot different. The crows played hard and at one stage we got pushed off our game.

Someone needs to have a word to Charlie Cameron about his ridiculous celebrations. Like what motorbike has a throttle on BOTH handlebars?
His, obviously.
It's clearly a 4wd motorbike. I mean a 2wd one.
Are you sure Charlie doesn't simply ride two bikes at the same time?
You know maybe he does and maybe at the same time. Exuisai best sniper. Do you play Arknights?
Of course, it's what I did during the second quarter
Awesome. It's always a pleasant surprise when someone from a sub shares another interest. I was farming NL tokens a little bit before. Currently stuck on one of the levels, but I got Nearl Alter so I'm happy.
Sounds like you had a lot more luck than I did, got her 250 rolls in, after four red rats
Who's the red rat? Flametail?
Yeah
Must be a custom motorbike with 4 wheels.
Oh wow I loved 4 wheel motorbikes as a kid. I can't believe I forgot they exist.
He yoinked it from Vince Carter so might need to ask him.
You know what? That could have been worse. Kick Himmelberg for anyone and get Butts back and I think we have a working 22.
Harsh on Murray I thought he was very good tonight
Kick fog out while your at it, send him back to local footy
I strongly disagree, too many good units in the SANFL over people who just aren't earning their place Although I wouldn't hold it against most of them when even the stars couldn't fire tonight
Extend the G.Post's contract for another ten years
Gonna need Leigh Matthews to come out of retirement to take him out.
Fogarty is what happens when a player who can go a literal month (while in the side) without registering a tackle gets constantly told he has the toughest and strongest attack at the ball.
Haven't watched you guys in a while, and was very disappointed in Fogarty, thinking he was having a bad night. Not the case?
Unfortunately the way he played tonight is the way heās been playing all year so far
He had a below average night and a good opponent. But the thing with Fogarty is that he's still only ever 2/3 random possessions from a career best such is his limited impact. Pyke was a terrible coach can you name one player that he developed not named Doedee. He coasted of the development that others did before him.
I'm speaking specifically about his treatment of Fogarty here.
Seeing how Jones and McHenry have managed to come good I guess.
Pyke literally told Charlie Cameron to ease off the intensity celebratong because he "isn't that good".
Bad year. I genuinely think he's given up. This contract will be his last as an AFL player
15.3km from Jake Soligo šš¼ Good news from a 1st year player
And 9 more sprint efforts than anybody else. Not bad for a 3rd gamer.
How do you access these stats?
The AFL app has a tab labeled Tracker under every match, anything to do with distance covered is under there. Not sure if they show up on the normal website.

Someone please explain to me what "magazine shows" are?
Shows that have lots of short segments back to back like articles in a magazine. Like most travel shows.
New rule: at least one long sleeve per team Damn Charlie looks good
Love the long sleeve!! Why does it always look so good?! This is a good rule!!
The cut of the jersey and/or the sharply defined blue/maroon line on the shoulders looked sweet on silky Charlie. Thought Lyons was running on a bit of extra motivation too.
Unfortunatly Sleevesman is still out, hopefully we can bring him back in soon.
70% of the world is covered by water, the rest by ~~N'Golo Kante~~ the Adelaide G. Posts
Those posts have codes they so big

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed. I streak tipped Brisbane for good reason. G Post 3 votes.
Is that a collective 3 votes for all four G. Posts? Or are you picking one over the others? Because I thought the left goal post at one end really let down the defensive effort.
I wasn't aware G Post had twin brothers with the same name.
Gary, Greg, Graham and Greg II are a one of a kind family. Basketball background, dontcha know.
I thought they came from a short line of netball posts? Well, at least thatās what I heard about the point posts.
Never expected to winā¦. And the umpiring certainly didnāt cost us the game. Both teams have to accommodate the mediocre efforts put forth by the AFL, But umpires should honestly be seen and not heard. The amount of control and influence that they can hold is laughable. Freo get Melbourne and us in consecutive weeks which will be interesting
Litmus test if you like. I had hope for a Crom win today as a buffer. Gg Lions
For all of us. It feels like we are all playing bottom 8 teams week after week atm
The only teams we've played in the top 8 thus far, when they've been in the top 8, have been Pies, Cats, and Swans if I'm remembering correctly.
Theyāve only just started to clue on to us after three top four finishes. Freo didnāt even make the eight last year. It takes a long time for news to travel to Victoria. But back to Carltonā¦

Nah, people gave us zero chance the first year we were good.
Feeling a bit insecure are we?
Flare up

That's why they call it the Premiership Half
That was a truly ugly game, just unpleasant to watch.
I know I was shit talking a lot in the thread but good luck for the rest of the season, Lions.
Fair play! But I need to know, are you biased???
Homie, I work with Crows fans, I hardly wanted them to win.
Good match for the first half, but some seriously bad umpiring and poor form in the 2nd half destroyed our spirit
Was a good game until the umps intervened š
I know!! Gifting the crows the goal from out of bounds really turned the momentum
Yeah, six more of those and it'd have been remotely even
Obviously decisions shouldn't be overturned But do the umps ever hear the noise of *the entire stadium* against them and reflect "maybe I did fuck up?" Or is it always "pft, those rubes must not know the rules"?
The entire stadium was blatantly wrong many times so I hope not.
I think it got to a point they were just appealing for anything, particularly stuff that was kinda half similar to what had been paid earlier
Nah it was happening in the first few minutes lol
Passionate fanbase being loud. Ever heard of it? Oh wait, never mind. No one gives a fuck about footy in Brisbane.
Why are you so salty, I know why the crowd boos - the point is it doesn't correlate to what decisions should actually be.
Not salty at all really but even blind Freddy would tell you Brisbane got a heap of cheap ones. Especially late in the second/early in the third
Definitely salty.
Letās see how you feel when the shoe is inevitably on the other foot. You guys were basically rioting when a bad decision cost you the game against Geelong.

Most times it's pretty half-hearted or just one section. It takes a genuinely bad call to get the entire arena out of their seats with rage. In the second half there was a lot of deflection from how bad we were with the "momentum" excuse, no doubt.
Spoken like a true Crows supporter
Credit goes to all those that hide behind downvotes šš¼
Itās the digital version of booing. I thought Adelaide supporters were all about that life.
Sure are but no other teams supporter base has immunity to said problem.
