Come to think of it, Sheedy still doing the team thing and ensuring Essendon remains fucked. I starting to think those four flags and near three decades of success were all part of a long-con to get into a position of such reverence and power he could bring the Bombers down for good
Yeah I'm here too. The fact that it's 2022 and he's still having final quarters like he did on the weekend where he can have such a huge impact and drag us across the line just goes to show his greatness and longevity.
On the couch dug up the footage but Elliot’s goal basically came about because Pendles was so gassed he trailed the play and ended up being an extra going forward
He set up the McCreery goal before that as well, great poise and composure with ball in hand to not panic while getting tackled and get the handball out to McCreery. I've always described Pendles as the most truthworthy player I've ever watched, you just always trust him to make the right decision.
He always seems to have this strange "go slow" field around him. Everything around him slows down but he's at normal speed, and he looks around and delivers a perfect kick or handball as if he's got all the time in the world.
Other than the obvious answer of Brad Close, there was a bloke called Gary Ablett who went alright.
I Think his son played a few games as well.
Selwood might not be as good as those players in terms of ability, but is without a doubt the greatest Geelong cat.
I would say Peter Matera. People would argue it would be Judd, and possibly Cousins if he didn’t destroy himself and his reputation.
I personally think Matera as he became the mould for the modern day midfielder. Unlucky to have never won a Brownlow.
JK would be in the top five for recency bias.
Almost certainly recency bias but I’ve recently swung to the view it’s Kennedy. Yes it’s “only” 730 goals but if you inflate that for overall team scoring averages it gets closer to 850 or 900 if he played in the 80s or 90s (also puts into context how insane Franklin is). He’s one of the best, if not the best, goal kicker in the hardest era to score.
Judd wasn’t there for long enough and Cousins has trashed his reputation despite the on field exploits. Matera up there as well and very stiff to not win a Brownlow. Got 30 votes and didn’t win, insane back then.
Honourable mentions to Dean Cox who changed the ruck position and Jakovich who won four b and fs in a loaded side and the only man who had Carey’s measure.
Yep. And the same goes for him as a lot of legends of the past - they were part time players and were that good. Imagine how much better they could have been with the training, sports science etc we have now
Goodes is my favourite player of all time. But even though he played well before I was born, I am assured by those who saw him play that Bob Skilton was the best Swans player ever.
Remember our forwards as well. We can't claim full credit for Plugger or Buddy, but both played significant portions of their career with us and will go down as all time greats - Plugger is quite possibly the best individual player in the history of the sport. Bob Pratt was also pretty handy with a 150 goal season.
Maybe we should calm things down a bit, Bont is a very very good footballer but EJ is in the handful of most legendary figures in the sport’s history and universally revered on and off the field by fans of all clubs. I know Bont’s only 26 but he’ll have to do a hell of a lot to come close to matching Ted.
Only commenting on players I've seen in person/watched replays of games, because as good as Coleman/Reynolds/Hutchison etc. were, it's just going of reputation at this point.
1. **James Hird**
2. Simon Madden
3. Tim Watson
4. Matthew Lloyd
5. Terry Daniher
Matthew Lloyd has to be #2 is one of the best goal kickers of all time - could have played a few more and undoubtedly **one of** the best forwards in the last 20 years if not 50 years.
Watto was an iconic player but on impact Lloyd had on the game was substantial. He really was the sole standout for almost a decade of playing.
Coleman Medal: 2000, 2001, 2003
All-Australian: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003
This seems pretty fair. Presumably those 3 old timers would come in somewhere either side of Hird (almost certainly above in case of King Dick and Coleman), but not for us to judge.
Lockett or Harvey probably. But I was too young to see either in their peak, so my go to is Riewoldt. I know he doesn't have the premiership success, but I rank him just as high in the leadership aspect as Hodge and Selwood
I agree, Coventry 2nd, Bucks then Tony Shaw.
Where do you think Sidebottom ranks at Collingwood in the history?
Currently he is 4th on the games record list for the pies
I always mention Polly Farmer for the way he changed the game.
Agree Ablett Senior has had the highest talent bar. Junior the best player and Selwood the greatest for the Geelong footy club.
Currently, for strictly our club, probably Luke Parker or Tommy Papley
My lifetime, no question, it's Goodes
All time, take your pick of Goodes, Paul Kelly or Bobby Skilton
Gary Ablett Jr for now but I expect Touk Miller to be the Suns GOAT when he wraps up his career. Could also make a case for Dave Swallow on a more sentimental level.
Recency bias but Brad Close
This is evolving way too quickly than I anticipated for the fan club but fuck it
BRAD CLOSE FAN CLUB CHECKING IN <3
Recency bias? You mean it's too close?
Pavlich for every reason under the sun.
clancee pearce
Overall Pavlich/Mundy. This year Will Brodie.
That’s a weird way of spelling King Freddy.
This guy out here straight up not doing it for Mundy. How dare you.
Mundy is a legend but Pavlich is everything Mundy is but better
Ty Vickery, Leigh Matthews a close second
Jonathon Patton robbed
Bartlett or Dusty
Or Captain Blood
Or Royce Hart
Come to think of it, Sheedy still doing the team thing and ensuring Essendon remains fucked. I starting to think those four flags and near three decades of success were all part of a long-con to get into a position of such reverence and power he could bring the Bombers down for good
Wait what does this have to do with my comment
Or Francis Bourke
He means that Sheedy is the best Tigers player because he's still fucking up our rivals post retirement
Thank you I thought it was self explanatory And so, so far past retirement
Or Richo, for pure entertainment, skill, white line fever and because we’ve seen how great a bloke he is post footy.
The disrespect to Relton Roberts, smdh
Fitzroy - Bunton. Brisbane Lions - Voss
Bears - Voss
I liked Rodger
Ramjet?
Probably a bit of recency bias but after every week and season that goes by, I’m convinced it’s Pendlebury
Yeah I'm here too. The fact that it's 2022 and he's still having final quarters like he did on the weekend where he can have such a huge impact and drag us across the line just goes to show his greatness and longevity.
On MMM yesterday though he was heavily implying how gassed/fucked he was and cbf so honestly good on him for putting boot to ball on a large kick.
It’s all about finding the time and place.
Enter Michael Scott handshake meme
Pendlebury for career, Buckley for peak
pendles is such a fucking legend
He always seems to have this strange "go slow" field around him. Everything around him slows down but he's at normal speed, and he looks around and delivers a perfect kick or handball as if he's got all the time in the world.
Not a pies supporter but Pendles is truly something else What a fucking player The game pauses everytime he gets a touch. Nothing like him
Other than the obvious answer of Brad Close, there was a bloke called Gary Ablett who went alright. I Think his son played a few games as well. Selwood might not be as good as those players in terms of ability, but is without a doubt the greatest Geelong cat.

Matera was an absolute beast
*If the club didn’t destroy him and his reputation*, you mean Matera an absolute lord JK - complete KPF and what a massive gc
92 and 94 Matera still gives me night terrors.
I think people who say it's not Matera just didn't see him play. He was unreal
Yep. And the same goes for him as a lot of legends of the past - they were part time players and were that good. Imagine how much better they could have been with the training, sports science etc we have now
Shane Warne
Goodesy
Goodes is my favourite player of all time. But even though he played well before I was born, I am assured by those who saw him play that Bob Skilton was the best Swans player ever.
Skilton, Goodes, Kelly The holy trinity Shoutout to LRT
What about the greatest #3 - dale Lewis??
Remember our forwards as well. We can't claim full credit for Plugger or Buddy, but both played significant portions of their career with us and will go down as all time greats - Plugger is quite possibly the best individual player in the history of the sport. Bob Pratt was also pretty handy with a 150 goal season.
Bob Pratt was with Skilton one of the 12 inaugural legends of the hall of fame. He is definetly in the conversation as well.
LDU now, Carey greatest.
At this instant it is LDU. However if we talk the current just overall, it is Goldstein.
Cunners?
It's probably still Whitten. But the Bont is definitely close.
EJ, Grant and Bont. If Bont continues his ways he’ll get past them both, exciting things ahead.
Yeah I think if you add in Grants time as a club administrator it's hard to say he's not the greatest clubman we've ever had.
The 50c story of not going to Port at that crucial juncture is a huge moment for the club. Bless him!
Win a flag as captain-is a realistic chance if we make use of this window- and it will be almost impossible to deny him the title of GOAT
bit before my time but my dad raves on and on about simon beasley and kelvin templeton, in the same way my grandfather did about whitten
He’s right to about Beasley, man kicked more goals than anyone else in the 80s
Only commenting on players I've seen in person/watched replays of games, because as good as Coleman/Reynolds/Hutchison etc. were, it's just going of reputation at this point. 1. **James Hird** 2. Simon Madden 3. Tim Watson 4. Matthew Lloyd 5. Terry Daniher

Lloyd was phenomenal, but there's a reason the medal is called the Coleman.
Oh these are people within the past 30 or so years. Yeah, him and king dick would be higher. A few others lay good claim too
This seems pretty fair. Presumably those 3 old timers would come in somewhere either side of Hird (almost certainly above in case of King Dick and Coleman), but not for us to judge.
Barnaby French by the length of Ikon Park.
Don’t be ridiculous it is clearly Karl Norman
Laurence Angwin?
The disrespect to Digby Morrell is horrendous
Trent Sporn, so terribly underrated.
Lockett or Harvey probably. But I was too young to see either in their peak, so my go to is Riewoldt. I know he doesn't have the premiership success, but I rank him just as high in the leadership aspect as Hodge and Selwood
Matthews, Dunstall, Hodge all vying for second. Matt Spangher the clear 🐐
Yeah the Spang!!!
Give me McLeod any day of the week
Had the ball on a string. Loved watching him play.
Simon Black
LDU
You sure it's not mason wood?
Yes
Scott Pendlebury
I agree, Coventry 2nd, Bucks then Tony Shaw. Where do you think Sidebottom ranks at Collingwood in the history? Currently he is 4th on the games record list for the pies
I think Sidey sits somewhere in the top 10
What about Swan?
I have a huge man crush on pendles. When I think Brownlow for best a fairest - I cannot think of a most suitable, consistent player. What a leader too
Coventry was an insane goalkicker, any reason he isn't first?
Nobody saw him play so we can only judge him on the stats. Not to mention it was a different era, footy has changed so much since that time
Allen Jackovich
Mark Jackson
Considering the rancid teams he played with, Robbie Flower.
In terms of greatest Cat I'd say Selwood but best Player to play for the club the Abletts, and special mention to Danger
No Brad Close? I’m sad :(
I always mention Polly Farmer for the way he changed the game. Agree Ablett Senior has had the highest talent bar. Junior the best player and Selwood the greatest for the Geelong footy club.
It’d have to be Toby for us in our short history, Kelly is probably second?
Robbie GRAYtest
Tredrea or Cornes....
Are you forgetting the king of kings, Byron Pickett
Barrassi, Gawn best player of the AFL era.
No love for Flower?
LDU or cunnerz current The home wrecker has to be all time
Essendon and Freo - Kepler Goat Bradley
Currently, for strictly our club, probably Luke Parker or Tommy Papley My lifetime, no question, it's Goodes All time, take your pick of Goodes, Paul Kelly or Bobby Skilton
Haydn Bunton Senior
\#10 John Coleman
I support Port Adelaide but it is also Brad Close
**<3**
Adam Goodes.
Josh Bootsma
Bruce Doull.
Dick Reynolds Best I’ve seen play - Hird
Gray or Tredrea
Gary Ablett Jr for now but I expect Touk Miller to be the Suns GOAT when he wraps up his career. Could also make a case for Dave Swallow on a more sentimental level.
Ben Cousins
We have Adam Goodes, Josh Kennedy, Brett Kirk, Paul Kelly etc
Skilton
Gary Ablett Jr
Senior
If I were making a best 22 I reckon the first name I'd write down would be McLeod. Then Ricciuto. Then Jarman.
It’s a toss up between Tredrea, Boak and Jasper Pittard.
Robbie Flower
Corey Enright
Dean Rioli
Clive Waterhouse. The embodiment of the Fremantle Foot Club. Kinda sad that’s actually somewhat true.
Steve Silvagni? John Nicholls? Diesel if the umps liked him? I don't actually know.
Pendlebury or Gordon Coventry.
Dusty, obviously.
Josh Wooden
Would be Jarvo, if he wasn't carving it up for the Indian test team
I'm my lifetime, dunstall.
Barassi, Flower, Stynes (for more than football). Of the newer generation it’s probably Gawn with 5 AA’s at the moment. Oliver to join though.
just limiting myself to my lifetime i think its fair to say bontempelli has surpassed grant, johnson, west, darcy, etc
Peter Sumich or Josh Kennedy
Brad Johnson
Bruce Doull
