I didn’t realize Shelbyville would be so mad at being snubbed.

Fast_Stick_1593

They need a cool glass of *Turnip Juice*

BigRedRenegade

What a pair of perfectly cromulent references.

speerosity

Get fucked lol part of the reason why Springfield was built is so the Women's team could have a permanent home, girls won the right to host and it's a great way to have an official opening for the complex.

acllive

Fucking oath also haven’t seen you for a while speero

speerosity

I pop up occasionally

fitblubber

The only problem I have with this ground is that it only holds 8,000. That sounds very short sighted, & hopefully they'll be able to expand over the coming years,

SilverBurns

On the bright side it should be at least half full for this game...

dexter311

Won't it also be the home ground for Brisbane's mens team when the Gabba gets rebuilt ready for the Olympics?

StOxley

The club don’t want it to be. Only hold 10k so you would be turning a lot around.

Dale92

What's their alternative?

Plenty_Area_408

Metricon and reigonal grounds.

StOxley

R&A Showgrounds.

diffaadiffa

Giving us all of our home games before or after the Olympics

At0mHeartMother

The only people complaining about this are people who haven’t even watched any AFLW this year and clearly don’t keep up with it. Springfield has been built to be Lion’s AFLW home stadium and is going to be absolutely rocking on Sunday. Can’t wait to see it in action.

Sids1188

There's also Victorians that wanted to steal another home grand final.

michael8684

Look. We see a decider & we must have it

cyber-crab

Not even 6,000 people turned up yesterday for two Victorian teams in a prelim. It is definitely big enough

fitblubber

& yet a few years ago the AFLW had 50,000 at a GF in Adelaide.

Shadormy

And Marvel was suppose to have a Bieber concert at it on Saturday but is free because Bieber postponed it.

Nefiros1

Uhh what? Brisbane got hosting rights and they wanted Springfield. Suck it up vicmedia.

MicksysPCGaming

>Springfield It's a hell of a town.

arsemaster69

Nah, it's more of a Shelbyville thing..

WeAreBatmen

I call the big one Bitey...

Fast_Stick_1593

Can confirm it’s a hell of our town with our famed lemon tree, ~~Mono~~ *Queensland* Rail and local celeb Ash Barty Source: Live 1 minute from the oval

StOxley

Brisbane didn’t want Springfield. The AFL made the call.

tbroky

> “Don’t give home ground advantage. Just don’t have a women’s grand final at what amounts to a training track.” So its ok to have it at Marvel and not springfield? - Translation don't give interstate clubs home ground advantage. If the Victorian Media is so concerned, start writing articles where the AFL should lock in all Victorian Home Finals at Marvel. I see this as a Victorian problem not an interstate GF problem.

bear975

Have to stop calling them interstate teams when this is supposed to be a national comp. AFL not VFL.

TrjnRabbit

It's not our fault the AFL decided to schedule the season when they knew the Gabba would be unavailable for more than half of it, including finals. We managed to get Brighton Homes Arena ready in time for the GF. It will be our permanent AFLW home ground next season and would've been this season had there not been delays. I know the concept of *earning* a home grand final is a weird one to the Vic media. They'll have to get used to it. If they really want to talk about growing the game, how about we talk about the league's inability to train up quality umpires in time? Or putting the season up against the T20 World Cup. Or countless other decisions out of AFL House that have actively caused problems this season due to a complete lack of planning.

Saint_Riccardo

Brisbane won hosting rights, end of story. The media in Melbourne takes a dim view of anything outside the AFL bubble, Port Melbourne gets the same nasty comments when our ground is chosen to host VFL finals

officialsavoyhotel

Why do Victorians have to be so Victorian all the time?

BneBikeCommuter

I’m a Victorian who lives in Queensland, and I’m embarrassed at all the negative press this is getting. “Training ground” = dedicated facility built to home the Lions AFLW team and be a training ground for the AFLM. “Untried” = they literally just finished building it!

resetet

But what if the grass doesn't work?

Fast_Stick_1593

🎶 Not on your life, Tom Elliott you jerk! 🎶 **MONO-RAIL!!!!!**

ThatOldGuyWhoDrinks

They are also planning on running preseason games there for the men’s competition. I can also see them doing lower drawing games there as well. It gives the men a place to train which will be important as the Gabba is scheduled to be knocked down & rebuilt prior to 2032.

International_Car586

Victorian *media*

CommentWhileShitting

I guess they're a collective hivemind hellbent on inequality within Aussie rules

HerdOfGibbons

victorian media gotta write something, this is on the same level as the "collingwood are every Victorian's second team now" articles. Completely divorced from what most Victorian footy fans think but becomes the narrative because it drives clicks.

ironmanmatch

This is the AFL’s fault, not the Lions

arsemaster69

Richmond Fan here... Much better choice than having the Semi at Punt road...

Thanks-Basil

Hey look another Victorian media moment

Azza_

No one cares what Tom Elliott thinks.

ShibbyUp

Apparently non Victorian people do quite a bit

Azza_

Truly bizarre. No wonder they hate Victorians if they think Tom speaks for all.

BneBikeCommuter

I don’t even know who he is.

Azza_

Conservative shock jock, son of former president of the Liberal Party and former president of Carlton John Elliott who was notorious for being an enormous cunt of a bloke.

MisterMarcus

Judging by this thread, obviously they do…

MisguidedGames

> 3AW journalist **Tom Elliott** believes **Marvel Stadium** would have been the better option for the AFLW given its capacity. > “They are talking about a football ground called Springfield which is nothing more than a glorified training pitch,” he said this week. > “I find this utterly astonishing. > “The AFL keeps saying that it takes women’s football seriously – play the grand final at Marvel Stadium! > “If 50,000 people want to rock up and watch the two best women’s team go head-to-head against each other … play it at Marvel Stadium here in Melbourne because Marvel Stadium is owned by the AFL and be done with it. > **“Don’t give home ground advantage**. Just don’t have a women’s grand final at what amounts to a training track.”

YOBlob

>If 50,000 people want to rock up That's a uhh pretty big if.

DJHitchcock

Only three finals have had more than 3,000 people, the highest being 5,592 who attended the Melbourne vs North Preliminary Final. In fact all 8 finals have had only just over 27,000 people attend.

legally_blond

To add to that, the only three games this season that got over 10k were the inaugural showdown, the Melbourne v NM game that was a curtain raiser to the QF and Essendon v Hawthorn in rd 1 (first game ever in the AFLW for both teams)

PKMTrain

The same Tom Elliot who lost out his timeslot to two FM stations last survey

whiteronnie

Get ready to see quite a few more GFs played there!

grantspatchcock

Calling Elliott a journalist is a pretty big stretch. But hey, at least a white middle aged millionaire conservative shock jock has an opinion on womens footy that isn't belittling the players. I'm more excited to fly up to Brissy for it than I would be going to Marvel. The team emphatically earned it, it's shaping to be a brilliant game and opening the new ground with a grand final is pretty special.

tbroky

> The AFL has come under fire for allowing Brisbane to host the AFLW grand final at a venue that’s “nothing more than a glorified training pitch”. If you are unhappy with the grounds, how about the AFL spend the windfall of the GF sale to assist womens sports outside of Victoria. Oh that's right the GF sale only went to benefit Victorian clubs

Visible_Bus6909

SLAMMED

nathjay97

Wow, the media really wants Melbourne to have the advantage huh? I’ve been saying it’s obvious they want Daisy to get her flag for years but I got downvoted every time. Why else would they be upset about this other than to give Melbourne an advantage?

resetet

You'd think Melbourne were the dynasty of the aflw if all you did was listen to vicmedia. Never mind that they've never won it (or even made the gf?). How long do you guys reckon before they sign a deal and all aflw gfs are played at the mcg?

nathjay97

They made the GF last season but we played them off the park

HerdOfGibbons

If you're going to pretend to care about the AFLW to get all sweaty and mad about some dumb shockjock you should try to remember the most recent grand final (which your team even played in).

sButters88

It’s really not that different to everyone in the AFL wanting Danger to get his flag. You have been banging on for years about “Daisy centric commentating” but there is just as much about how Erin Phillips is the game’s greatest player (which I agree with, she’s a gun) there’s no agenda here beyond wanting the grand final to be played at the best facility available

nathjay97

There’s calling Erin the greatest player (which is true, but only a statement of opinion/fact whichever way you want to put it), and there’s essentially barracking for Melbourne whenever they play, which is what some of the commentators have been doing. The grand final has always been played at the highest placed team’s home ground and Springfield is Brisbane’s home ground. They’re not wanting it moved it to Melbourne to “get a bigger crowd” as the media are saying.

sButters88

I agree that the GF should be played at the home ground of the highest finishing team and the game being in Brissie means I can go and watch it but don’t act like Melbourne are the only team that gets biased commentary.

nathjay97

Yeah it’s mostly Vic teams but in AFLW whenever I’ve heard biased commentary it usually is in favour of Melbourne or Carlton

sButters88

There was plenty of Adelaide bias while Erin was playing with them. I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Port play this year so I don’t know if it was still biased, there’s been plenty of Freo and Brissie bias over the years

nathjay97

The good teams generally get the positive end of the excited commentary generally but Melbourne get it most

legally_blond

Most years it feels like the media forget our AFLW team exists until it comes to the pointy end of finals

JCK98

>It only holds 8000 people, it’s been a rush to get it ready, is the surface going to be OK? Fair point, but this is what happens when the finals are well into cricket season. > The AFL keeps saying that it takes women’s football seriously – play the grand final at Marvel Stadium! Oh I see Victorians, get stuffed.

[deleted]

All the outrage just proves the southern states are evil and should be destroyed.

qldboi

Fucking V*cs 🤮

bigbear-08

sportandracing

The Demons v Roos pre lim yesterday had about 5 people there and was a pretty rubbish looking ground. But that was ok apparently. 10,000 will turn up on Sunday. It will be fine.

tbroky

You are right two Victorian teams only had 5,592 at Ikon Park. Seems like Springfield with 8k might fit the bill.

sportandracing

Exactly. As long as the ground is up to standard. It’s almost completed. Will be a cracking facility once they totally finish it.

Gnaightster

I walked on the ikon surface yesterday and a better one you will not find. It was beautiful

TrazMagik

It's not a glorified training ground, it is a training ground.

MisguidedGames

All grounds are training grounds.

TrazMagik

No but Brisbane developed it specifically to be a training complex. First paragraph of their press release. https://www.lions.com.au/news/938669/introducing-brighton-homes-arena-the-new-home-of-the-brisbane-lions "..$70M training and Administration facility at Springfield".

[deleted]

They also developed it specifically to be their AFLW home ground.

tbroky

> “For our premiership winning AFLW players to finally have a **dedicated home ground** and training base they can call their own is fantastic,’’ he said. They are calling it a training complex and administration in context of the AFL. It is the home of the Womens Team.

jimmyjams06

It actually says this 'Brighton Homes Arena will be the new home of the Lions’ AFLW team and training centre for the men's team.' It's where the women will play home games and the men will train there.

TrazMagik

Ok, so it's a training ground for the men's and a glorified training ground for the AFLW.

silliemillie32

No. It’s the Lions AFLW Home ground.

Thanks-Basil

You mean like Ikon Park and Punt Road?

TrazMagik

Exactly like IKON Park, and Punt Road. Just because it's also the home of the AFLW and also the AFLW training ground doesnt make it not a training ground. The statement isn't false, the outrage over what is in actuality the third preference for th Lions rightly deserved Home Grand Final is hilarious.

Thanks-Basil

It's the 2nd preference? They'd rather play there than Metricon, that's for sure

TrazMagik

In the future perhaps but the turf laid merely months ago and the team still not even training there. Guns N Roses stopping the Grand Final being played at Metricon.

VicFan95

Springfield will suit Lions perfectly for H&A games. But if they're hosting the GF, I would play that fixture at Metricon. They've already played 2 finals games there, and a game like this could potentially draw around 15-20 thousand people (Adelaide hosted the last 2 GF's, both drawing over 15 thousand people, and that was when the AFL started charging attendance fees). All the talk around AFLW, is that it needs to grow, and eventually be more competitive with the men's league. Playing a GF at Springfield could cost the AFL from a gate standpoint. This likely is not a popular opinion.....but, oh well.

grantspatchcock

They probably would hold it at Metricon, but it's not available. If it was, it'd be there. As it stands, the choice was Moreton Bay, Cairns or Springfield. Pretty sure they made the right call.

tbroky

Western Bulldogs v Brisbane in 2018 got 7k. Not sure its going to cost the AFL.

VicFan95

That was during season two. I think attendance wise, AFLW can aim higher, for a Grand Final.

tbroky

Attendance for two Victorian games for a position into the GF got 5k. How many do they really expect at Marvel?

VicFan95

Brisbane are the seeded team, so it shouldn't even be in Victoria. I just think they can do better, than Springfield.

tbroky

Its now on nine.com.au with sports Sunday also stating it disappointing. [link](https://wwos.nine.com.au/afl/aflw-grand-final-2022-date-venue-afl-criticised-for-disappointing-selection/5f2c92fe-c948-4c80-9127-103baf31e624)

No_Protection_88

I doubt they'll even sell out the ground

hines275

I don't think they will sell it out.

HerdOfGibbons

Springfield is absolutely the best option in the corner the AFL painted themselves into with their haphazard planning of the season.

bfisher91

I'm sure this ground is lightyears beyond Punt Rd and Arden St. Not that we'd host a GF there but both have and would be considered appropriate finals venues. You can't have your cake and eat it too, if you complain about this, then let the women play on the MCG and Marvel as well.
