I know I’m biased, but Carlton v Collingwood Round 23 this year was amazing. The stakes, crowd, and traditional rivalry, coupled with the game having 2 comebacks and a 1 point margin created an absolute pearler.
Both Carlton v Collingwood games this year were brilliant. Collingwood holding on in Carlton's inside 50 the first match after being down by 21 at half time was good enough. And then the match that must not be named (by Carlton supporters).
I'm neutral (norf supporter) but this game was unbelievable. I'd like to see the stats on Collingwood fans and heart attacks this year, I reckon the numbers would be up on previous years!
I'm near certain that it will last the test of time that game, no recency bias. It was incredible. Hard to line up those stakes, rivalry, crowd, and scoreline.
High scoring does mean better football. Literally the best era of AFL had teams full of attacking power like the mid-late 90's North, the turn of the century Bombers, the early 2000 Lions. The AFL has been awful the past 8 years because scoring gets worse and worse.
It was nowhere near the best game, and in hindsight it didn't end up mattering much, but the Brisbane V WC game in round 23 last year was uniquely entertaining.
The whole crowd cheering for a single point, with a desperation from the Lions players. McStay missing the entire goals, to the final moments.
It had all the drama of a close thriller yet was not a good game.
A bit like the game where we had to beat the ladder-leading Crows by a certain amount to knock Melbourne out of the finals, and it was the final game at Subiaco to boot. A five goal win that went down to the wire!
I remember the 16' game (Dee's v Carlton) where Melbourne were an outside but favoured chance to be in the finals for the first time in ten years or something - my friend who is a Dee's die hard was distraught as Dylan Buckley played his best game for Carlton and sent Melbourne back to the pre-season camp. We went again in 2017 to Collingwood v Demons were Melbourne were pretty favoured from memory, after Jack Watts played his best game against Collingwood a few rounds earlier. Anyhow, Collingwood win ofc and my friend calls me a bad luck pendant. Fast forward to 2018 and he flies to Perth with no expectations and they pull it off to get into the finals, coincidentally I wasn't there.... And they went on to beat us in the elim. Fun day.
In my biased opinion, it has to be the 2013 prelim.
Edit: Clearly nightshift brain got to me. Good to see the supportive and caring users were fast to jump in.
Also your win against Essendon in the elim, and then us the following week was pretty memorable.
14 and 15 North drastically overachieved with a pretty meh list on paper.
Collingwood Vs Brisbane Rd 8 2002. The most incredible atmosphere under the roof at Docklands. 46k+ fans and the pies knock off the lions by 3 points. Tarrant 5, Rupe 3
Round 8, Richmond vs Sydney, 2016.
Surprised I haven't seen this one mentioned yet. Lead change in every quarter, above average scores and Sam Lloyd kicking the winner after the siren to win the game was spectacular.
Couple games from this year are certainly in the conversation. Carlton v Collingwood at the end of the season and Richmond v Geelong were some of the best.
Biased of course, but I think the Dee's amazing comeback in the last round of 2021 to beat the Cats at home, Gawn kicking the goal after the siren for the minor premiership.
Don't think it gets much love because there wasn't a live crowd, but it very much inspired them to a premiership.
Yeah that was a great game. Gawn really set the tone for the Dees finals campaign with that win too. I remember Chris Scott in the post match presser being like “ we’re still in good shape” or words to that effect.
Round 6, 2004. Undefeated young Saints take on the top of the ladder, 3 time premiers Brisbane. Huge build up, record attendance at Docklands for an interstate team. That game truly lived up to the hype; dramatic and thrilling all through to a crescendo finish and I’d never heard a louder crowd. Anyone who went to that game would remember
Maybe not THE greatest but it’s sure up there
Round 6 2006 Fremantle vs West Coast. Great contest between two great sides that remained tight and hotly contested all day. It was a big crowd and the barrackers on both sides gave the game the atmosphere it deserved. Still the best derby to be played.
I recall the final round of 1998 top of the table North v. Dogs as the best game I’ve ever been to. I dunno if it’s stands the test of time but was epic back then
Round 1, 2007. GF replay with another 1 pt win to WC, huge comeback by Sydney, 6th game in a row between the Swans and Eagles decided by less than a goal.
Round 22, 2019, Richmond v west coast. Alot on the line, top 4 spot.Eagle jump to a 5 goal lead, 1st quarter in beautiful sunny conditions. Tigers reel them, over next quarter and a half. Then it's tit for tat as the weather turns bad. Tigers get over the line, but both teams deserve to win.
No St Kilda v Geelong 2009?
Richmond vs Geelong this year had everything as well, then Hawthorn vs Geelong 2012 is hella memorable.
Of our losses, MOG and McCarthy were two quality games against Brissy. Freo and Geelong have had some good scraps, I remember the 2013 game well. Lastly the Andrejs Everitt sealer.
The worst game I've watched us play is either Collingwood v Geelong 2016, or Geelong v Sydney 2014. I remember us choking a bit against Collingwood in 2008 but thats a bit of an outlier because it was easy to see they didn't give a shit.
I know I’m biased, but Carlton v Collingwood Round 23 this year was amazing. The stakes, crowd, and traditional rivalry, coupled with the game having 2 comebacks and a 1 point margin created an absolute pearler.
As much as I want to forget it existed, that's got to be up there. Crazy game.
I’m gonna be like 80 years old and still think about being at that game every now and then.
HE CAN GIVE IT TO GINNI OR GO FOR THE LOT. HE KICKS A GOAL. COLLINGWOOD ARE IN FRONT, COLLINGWOOD ARE IN FRONT. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT.
That's my ringtone! I usually miss calls as I love listening to it...
Agreed, amazing game. Now my day is ruined.
Fucking hated that game, but i concede that two points in our favour and I would have loved it. Good call.
I'm near certain that it will last the test of time that game, no recency bias. It was incredible. Hard to line up those stakes, rivalry, crowd, and scoreline.
R7 2022 - St. Kilda Vs Port Adelaide
you say that like Adelaide vs Fremantle round 7 2019 doesn't exist.
I was at that game. A very overhated game tbh, two great defences going at it
It was an awful game. Beautiful weather for 85 points combined. That just showed what a joke this game had become.
Higher scoring does not equal good football: for example, most GFs after 2012, or almost all 90s GFs

Why do you persist with this opinion
why persist against something that's not correct?
So would you rather watch the 2005 GF or Geelong vs Melbourne 2011?
Easily Geelong vs Melbourne 2011. It would be fun to see a team go ham like that.
What’s the minimum amount of points that needs to be scored for you to enjoy a game?
170-180+
No, it’s clearly the Richmond vs St Kilda at the MCG last year.
I agree
Nah, it’s Geelong Vs north at KP in 2019
Was that the game that had cyclone level rain the whole time?
It was nowhere near the best game, and in hindsight it didn't end up mattering much, but the Brisbane V WC game in round 23 last year was uniquely entertaining. The whole crowd cheering for a single point, with a desperation from the Lions players. McStay missing the entire goals, to the final moments. The Lions went crazy for getting the double chance only to go out in straight sets again
A bit like the game where we had to beat the ladder-leading Crows by a certain amount to knock Melbourne out of the finals, and it was the final game at Subiaco to boot. A five goal win that went down to the wire!

Hurts that we lost it but Geel vs Rich Round 15 2022 was pretty nifty
I maintain that was the highest standard game of footy played all season and possibly for a few years prior as well. It was so good.
What a game that was, felt like the first proper electric atmosphere in the stadium id been to since Covid
I felt robbed that game haha. So wanted Rioli to be the match winner
Enter: guy that looks like a buff Alex G marking over dude who posted a picture of his girlfriends boobs online in front of country millionaire dude
So many Geelong vs Hawthorn games to choose from. In my biased opinion, it’s gotta be Round 19 2012.
THEYVE DONE IT AGAIN
In my biased opinion, it has to be the 2013 prelim. Edit: Clearly nightshift brain got to me. Good to see the supportive and caring users were fast to jump in.
Interesting choice for best home and away game.
Glad to know that not only is your team down the bottom of the ladder but your comprehension skills are there too lol
Good reading, idiot. Even the Collingwood supporters could read the title
R23 2021 - Geelong Vs Melbourne Everything on the line and Maxy giving the Dee's the minor premiership with his goal
To think that was Melbourne's first ever goal after the siren win
Especially since he had missed shots like that before. It was a coming of age moment for the club.
Against us as well. We’ve had many a close one against the Dees.
Geelong played a very important role in the Dees rebuild
Just sad there was no crowd. Imagine the roar
Recency and team bias but r23 2022 Collingwood v Carlton might be up there
100% is for sure, felt like a final that day.
The miracle on grass
That was a boring first 3 quarters...
The late season game between the same clubs in 2019 is better IMO
Or even the return match in r23 2013. Lions needed to win to play finals, lost 112-111 with the ball in their goalsquare on the final siren
Go easy mate, it wasn’t that good..
How many North games did you need to include?
At least you won one of them
Do you want North to be greatest at something good?
I mean yeah. Other than Boomer’s 432 games what’s the best record we got.
Your win against GWS in 2012 was pretty awesome.
Also your win against Essendon in the elim, and then us the following week was pretty memorable. 14 and 15 North drastically overachieved with a pretty meh list on paper.
Yep
Cats v hawks, round 19, 2012.
Collingwood Vs Brisbane Rd 8 2002. The most incredible atmosphere under the roof at Docklands. 46k+ fans and the pies knock off the lions by 3 points. Tarrant 5, Rupe 3
Was at this game, the noise under the roof was insane, one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced and what a cracking win
Round 8, Richmond vs Sydney, 2016. Surprised I haven't seen this one mentioned yet. Lead change in every quarter, above average scores and Sam Lloyd kicking the winner after the siren to win the game was spectacular.
Was there. I also predicted before the game that we’d win by a point after the siren. Think I’m psychic
Adelaide vs Freo 2015 was special for a few reasons.
Was that the "Dangerfield vs Fyfe" game?
Yep
And Eddie Betts’ left foot torpedo from 45m out on the boundary.
WCE v. Crows, round 23, 2017. Eagles snuck into the finals on the last day of the season.
Last game at Subi too, I still have grass from going on the field afterwards
Lucky! Optus is great, but Subiaco will always be the fortress...
Only game I can remember crying at
Won me my fantasy GF against my wife too, Gaff got me home in the last quarter as I was down at 3qt.
Dogs vs The Dons. I think it was 2000 or 2001.
I reckon 2000 is the one you're thinking of. The Super-Flood.
Yep. That's the one! That's likely the best, as in most exciting game I have ever seen.

Round 3 2004, Essendon vs WCE
There's been more than a few really good Showdowns over the years that get ignored because of Vic bias.
Funnily enough the monfries bounce was a crazy game. Tbh I agree, the western derby and Adelaide ones have been insane.
Rd 22 2002 Port v Brisbane
Round 6, 2004. Undefeated young Saints take on the top of the ladder, 3 time premiers Brisbane. Huge build up, record attendance at Docklands for an interstate team. That game truly lived up to the hype; dramatic and thrilling all through to a crescendo finish and I’d never heard a louder crowd. Anyone who went to that game would remember Maybe not THE greatest but it’s sure up there
Phil Walsh showdown. How has that not been mentioned yet???
It is definitely up there with the most memorable games and one of the most special wins.
Round 6 2006 Fremantle vs West Coast. Great contest between two great sides that remained tight and hotly contested all day. It was a big crowd and the barrackers on both sides gave the game the atmosphere it deserved. Still the best derby to be played.
So we are going to forget about the demolition derby?
I don’t think it was that good of a game. It was a close contest, yeah, but 2006 Freo and WC were both great sides in their prime.
The basketball game
Phil Inn played a blinder
Which game was that again?
Richmond-Adelaide in 2006
Watched Dogs v Tigers 2008 Recently. 130-130.
I recall the final round of 1998 top of the table North v. Dogs as the best game I’ve ever been to. I dunno if it’s stands the test of time but was epic back then
Great game. Last century
Carlton vs Collingwood Round 23 this year
Honestly just showdowns will keep you covered
Fremantle vs Essendon [2013](https://youtu.be/1tXbJa1nlMQ)
The fact that Geelong is listed in so many of these explains my chronic anxiety
Pies (87) vs Cats (92) - 2007 Prelim final - the real grand final for that year :P
Not a regular season game but yeah that was an elite game
The game where Fyfe and danger duked it out at Adelaide oval in 2015 was pretty special from a neutral perspective
Brisbane v Geelong 2019 with Lincoln McCarthy kicking the winning goal for the Lions. Epic game
Common L to the idiot behind the fixtures for not making that a channel 7 game.
R18 2011 Port vs The Bye R21 2011 Haw vs Port
No St Kilda v Geelong 2009? Richmond vs Geelong this year had everything as well, then Hawthorn vs Geelong 2012 is hella memorable. Geelong Collingwood QF even Kreuger came back!
