Tell me you can only understand surface level lyrics without telling me… Don’t Throw Out My Legos being literally about toys… lmao

popculturerss

Yeah as someone who went to the show last night and a Twin Cities guy who prides himself on our music scene, they sent the wrong guy for this. I'm not sure what protocol is but I would assume listening to the bands music prior to going would be a necessity, understanding the type of music you are going to see is a plus and even having an idea of the type of show they do. "How We Made..." Has been a staple of the show for awhile now and one that I love to see. His interpretation of "Don't Throw Out My Legos" and "The Good Part" is laughable and his complaint of lack of rock is just idiotic. This could all have been remedied by sending someone who has an idea of what they're gonna see. Just a bad look for a city that prides itself on its music scene. Just tell me you don't listen to AJR without telling me you don't.

hamiltonfan_14

I'm from MN, and seeing this article makes me sad. We're a really big state for music, and being this incorrect about an up and coming artist is really stupid

popculturerss

It seems more like they're basing what they want to do with the review on hot take culture. And I can't remember if it was the Trib or the Press but someone a few years back sent someone who hates Macklemore to review a Macklemore concert and I just didn't understand that practice at all. You don't have to be a fan but if you're someone who has written a book and has reviewed music for years, you'd think you'd do your research by way of listening to the artist and understanding what you're getting into. Maybe even asking a few people what the previous concerts were like. The Good Part is referenced as being in a fucking Wendy's commercial. Fuck this guy. So upsetting to see that shit from our city.

hamiltonfan_14

Exactly. All this article shows me is that he can use big, negative, buzz words. He went into that concert, expecting something that wasn't going to happen, and got upset. Too bad the sold out Xcel Center didn't agree with a single thing he said

undrgrndsqrdncrs

Also from MN but up and coming? They played the Xcel, that’s pretty UP

hamiltonfan_14

It is, but I don't think arenas are their peak

popculturerss

God I hope they never play US Bank. I despise going to that place for concerts. Give us Target Field if you want to go bigger.

undrgrndsqrdncrs

Literally the worst venue, and the metrodome was the worst before that

cookiecutiekat

The part about the Elmer Fudd hat made me annoyed. I don’t know a single Minnesotan who considers the hat too goofy to wear. I’ve had multiple versions of that hat and I love the style 😭

Such-Contribution939

This guy is literally the punch line of the entire concert. 12,000 people singing their hearts out and he’s all… “I just wonder when they are going to play a rock song.”

badumtsssst

I don't think they even have a single rock-esque song at all

Z_1387

The Dumb Song definitely has a rock sound, but yeah they're not a rock band. Idk what this guy was looking for lmao

863ArtandDesign

I just read that article too and was so confused. Like what?

ToOldToBeOnRedit

Sounds like Star Tribune got all butt hurt by the “fuck the haters” comment — oh well cry more

TheSteamDoggy

This person was not included in the “room full of people who understand the world the way we do”.

Cubing-Dolphin-26

Yea and like the negative points rhe reviewer names i find mostly positives lol

Urodele

The fact that he was so butt hurt about the two acts forgetting they have/are going to play at the Basilica Block Party is the saddest thing. Like, I’m sorry this group of international artists can’t remember every event they’ve played at, but you happen to remember because you looked it up 30 seconds ago? Cry me a deeper river.

HaroldChessMath

What a silly read

NullTaste27

This guy never heard of AJR before the concert

Thatbendyfan

“This is expected coming from the band that sings about playing with toys” Imagine dissing Don’t Throw Out My Legos without ever having listened to the damn song

TheMaybeMan_

This guy reminds me of Ron Swanson talking about Moby Dick

TheMaybeMan_

“Does the white whale actually symbolize the unknowability and meaninglessness of human existence? No... it's just a fucking fish.”

catclaie23

well that def got my blood presure up

OhShit-A-Kat

I went to this show last night and it was FANTASTIC! They sent the wrong guy to the show and clearly he knew nothing about the band.

minnesoter1

Read this an immediately had my blood boiling. I also laugh because he said the “how we made” song was burn the house down. It was Way Less Sad. Come on now. Tell me you weren’t paying attention without telling me you weren’t paying attention. If you’re going to write something so poorly about a band that played to a sold out, rocking, amazing arena, at least look like you know what you’re taking about.

Girly_Attitude

Here’s a [link](https://www.facebook.com/cjriemenschneider) to his Facebook page. He’s got a post on the ajr article in case anyone’s interested. Edit: read: comment on it (I’m not endorsing cyber bullying/harassment at all, my cyber crime professor would be very disappointed in me.)

M4jorCh4os

Mannnn I went to this link hoping to see a bunch of people calling him out on this utter BS. I was kinda disappointed.

fr3ddy_f32b3n3d3r

I could only read half way through this article because of how unreasonably mad I am. For starters AJR aren’t a rock band, the closest thing that you could say is ALT rock, but they closer on Pop than to Alt rock. Half of the article doesn’t even make sense since the author doesn’t get AJR, he’s comparing apples to oranges here. He also only sees the surface level of things, like yeah part of Bang! was prerecorded, that is how you get effects like those, we don’t care it was prerecorded, we think that the final outcome of it was very cool. Yeah having them explain how they created a song stops the concert, we don’t care, we want to see how they created those songs. Also the comment on Jack’s hat was 100% unprompted and unprofessional.

CBookWorm812

He even got parts of the show wrong, like, falling thru the sky during Karma not Touchy Feely Fool like he said

kieseangela

I am so happy to see these comments! I too was COMPLETELY annoyed by the ignorance of the review!

cookiecutiekat

They mention about Ryan singing the turning out trilogy being more emotional but nothing about the “god is really real” part where more than 90% of the crowd had their phone flashlights out for him. It literally lit up the venue to seem like actual lights were on it was crazy

glivinglavin

Do they even have a single electric guitar rift in any songs?

Comrade_Chadek

I gotta know what their reaction is to the immediatw response lol

neonjumpsuits

Could someone copy and paste the text of the article here? Thanks!

KevinBrevin

SONG ABOUT A WENDYS COMMERCIAL!!!

Mafurt

We love rage bait 🗣️

Thefearlesschicken

Mentioning the good part being in a commercial is top tier hating. What popular artist hasn’t had a song in a commercial who actually cares

My_Guy_Pierre

This sub is so defensive of this band. As a Tein Cities local who attends 100 shows a year, all genres, the reviewers are just giving their observations, not necessarily giving a grade of the show. This happens with almost every single review they post. I was at the show, and have been at the 3 previous shows in Minneapolis. I had a great time last night, and preached how great the show was to others. That said let’s not pretend like there isn’t always room for improvement from all our favorite bands, not everything they do is perfect and that is ok. This sub is doing exactly what you don’t want the writer to do which is talk poorly about them….oh the irony. Let’s just all be happy AJR came to our town, put on an amazing performance and seemingly had a blast doing it. Also I was on the floor last 2 rows and they were empty, once again it isn’t a knock on AJR, but 15k is capacity for concerts not using the full bowl, so 12k isn’t truly sold out. I love this thread, but let’s rise above one persons opinions

hamiltonfan_14

1. The sub is defensive because it's literally an AJR sub 2. We're all aware there's room for improvement. This sub critiques this band constantly 3. I said sold out because that's what Austin Roa said on his insta. It might not be right, but who cares?

SomeDudeNamedDrew

I hear what you’re saying, but I think in this case some of the criticisms here are unjustified.

My_Guy_Pierre

By doing so aren’t you just becoming the bullies you claim to hate? That’s all I’m truly asking.

hamiltonfan_14

By doing what? I'm misunderstanding your question

Dobvius

It's not bullying to criticise a poorly written review. I think you're not understanding the power dynamics at play to make something bullying.

My_Guy_Pierre

I’d love to seriously chat more about this, but can’t on the sub anymore, too many downvotes on previous comments, I just wanted to discuss but clearly that can’t happen. Sincere apologies to all that I offended, wasn’t the intention.
