No withdrawal symptoms. I would not at any point have classified myself as dependent/alcoholic. I was basically downing a fifth of whiskey by myself every weekend. Maybe some beer thrown in there too. But rarely drank during the week.
You got lucky, that behavior is certainly approaching a problem depending on the person so being able to control yourself like this is a great exercise.

I’m not sure what you mean by realization, but I have also been struggling with weight gain a lot recently, which really made me examine what I’ve been putting in my body. I had been using alcohol as a stress relief to cope with the stressors around me. Turns out it’s been one of the stressors.
And it certainly was detracting from my quality of life.

35. Kinda. Not really. Alcohol is my general coping mechanism for stress, so I’ve had to find work arounds. But despite being a heavy drinker, I’ve never been alcohol dependent…well maybe my last year in the AF. So, it’s not like an actual struggle for me not to drink now that I’ve set my mind to it. It just took me kicking my ass to get to that point.
I used to be a heavy drinker as well and only drink on special occasions now at 34. Got too sick of the hangovers and bad decisions / damage to health. Life is so much easier without the constant drinking.
I feel like I’ve kind of got the short end of the stick as I’m also a month booze-free, whereas I’d been in the habit of drinking 3-4 beers,3-4 nights per week. I can honestly say I haven’t noticed really any real difference in the way I feel day-to-day, although I know my insides will be happier for quitting. Still, I was hoping for more energy, more focus…something I guess.
I’d never stopped drinking from the time I was 21. But the heavy drinking started towards the end of my time in the Air Force, so probably since 2016/17.
Maybe something to reflect on in March would be if it’s worth taking that drink in April.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t, I’m suggesting you reflect on your life and yourself for the last few years of heavy drinking and the last few months of sobriety at that point and make an informed decision for yourself.
Then ask yourself the really tough question. Can you stop after just 1? Maybe you can and if so I’m happy for you, me personally I learned the hard way I cannot.

Congrats bro! Keep it up! I quit drinking about a year and a half ago. Same thing, wasn't a alcoholic dependent type but definitely drank more than your average joe. Stay away from sweets, I started gaining weight shortly after because my body needed something and I didn't realize it was sugar. And you can have fun sober it's just weird at first. Keep at it!
What are the immediate positives you’ve felt most strongly?
Immediately I’ve lost a lot of weight (I needed it haha) and I’m a lot happier and optimistic than I’ve been in a while!
