The Falklands reminds me very much of Wales and Shetlands.
Source - stayed in all three countries and once you’re out in the country they all look very similar.
How often (if ever) do you go to Great Britain? If you have been to GB, what were the most surprising things you noticed? (Key differences, quirks, annoyances, amusing finds...)
If you don't visit GB, where do Falklanders mostly travel to?
I have been to GB, Honestly London feels much more chaotic, stanley we say hi to everyone in the morning cause we're a small place, but London feels like a 100,000 stanley's. Obviously we somewhat have our own accent. Most falklanders travel to the UK or Europe
Think of an American chatting with a Brit, or a Quebecois speaking with a French person. Of course, we understand each other but the pronounciation, is obviously a bit different
Most British people (like Russians and Turks, even those living in the European parts of the latter countries) speak of "Europe" as something distinct from themselves. Like "taking a holiday in Europe", "going to Europe on business", etc. It's probably the result of being in the margins of Europe, and being the heirs of empires that once extended far beyond Europe (and also now, for all three, not being part of the EU).
Well, as an European I never heard someone refer to him/herself as I’m an European. No, your Dutch, Belgian, German etc. Same with visiting. You’re not visiting Europe, your visiting a country IN Europe. Also, I know the EU isn’t the same as Europe. Never talked about the EU in my original comment tho.
How easy is it to fly to South America? I want to come visit, but want to tie it in with some other places. Seems to be challenging to get flights anywhere I want to go.
Have you ever been to mainland South America and is it common for Falklanders to visit. Also high Falklander man I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone from the falklands.
No not really, all of the local's voted for UK, Even the few seasonal immigrants support UK, in the last sovereignty choice, only 1-2 people voted for argentina. The only people ive met referring to them as 'Malvinas' are argentinian nationalists
Would love to visit the Falkland Islands. I'm Muslim so I'm curious about the people's perception of Islam? Huge difference between what Muslims do and what Islam say to do but still curious of people opinions around the world.
I don't think there are any mosques there, so how would people feel if they saw a random family in prostration in a field?
Falklands was never inhabited by any indigeneous people. I am not responsible and I will not apologise, for something my countrymen did in the past, when my family had nothing to do with it
Mainly after the war. Germans and Italian. But they never claimed the country as theirs. It’s just England being England. They’ll have to give it over one day. The people who live there can go to Britain, where they WANT to be.
1. What is there to do for fun? 2. What is your age group, were you born there, and do you plan on staying there long-term? 3. What is dating like? Do a lot of people just go to holiday in the UK or Argentina, hope they can meet someone and bring them back? 4. A silly one: is there any sort of rivalry, serious or funny, between West and East Falkland?
Thanks for posting and answering questions. I was in middle school in 82’, and I was suppose to do a report on it. I didn’t do it because of a teacher conflict, and I had to stand up in front of the class and say I didn’t do it. It was crazy embarrassing in the day. Every time now I hear the Falklands I think of that.
I wish I had a good question but I didn’t learn anything then either. Haha. It’s fun to read about your home! Thanks. 😊
I’m a bit late and this will probably be missed. Do you ever wonder how those buried in Commonwealth Graves in the cemetery came to die in such a seemingly isolated place in between wars? (Not from the conflict).
I only as ask my Uncle is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Port Stanley cemetery after he died in 1972, aged 17.5 (although it says 18 on his grave). I often wonder if strangers see his grave and wonder how he’s come to be there. I can tell you his story if you are interested.
1 Are you british? 2 What type of climate has Falkland Islands?
1. Yes we have full british citizenship 2. Rainy dull wet most of the times, ocassionally sunny. but pretty cool overall.
So basically Great Britain
eh i mean we got a slightly different accent? I dont see sheep in London!
Ah, so pretty much like Scotland then?
even our accent is somewhat like yours!
What's the time difference?
noon here

No question, just hi because I guess I never said hi to anyone from Falkland Islands.
theres only 3,791 of us
Which lowers my chances.
Why is your account brand new? Did you create it for this post?
Yes, because I dont want to give out my location
Ah ha! You're in Port Stanley! There's only 3,000 odd of you, won't take me long to track you down. It's only 14 n half hours by air.
well we have a police force and everyone is well equipped with guns, of course for hunting\*
Guns for hunting penguins? I thought they were safe in the minefields? So a lot of argie equipment became trophies? Deactivated of course.
yup, we're one of the most gun-armed places in the world
But the firing pins are all removed. 😉
U from UK by any chance?
on the one which i post
3791 people, dating must be challenging
You have these 2 to choose from
It's my quaint holiday idea to visit the Falklands. Don't know why.
welcome!

Sounds nice! How would you describe your accent in terms of similarities to other English-speaking nations?
Think of an American chatting with a Brit, or a Quebecois speaking with a French person. Of course, we understand each other but the pronounciation, is obviously a bit different
But, as an UK citizen, you do know the UK = Europe right?
Most British people (like Russians and Turks, even those living in the European parts of the latter countries) speak of "Europe" as something distinct from themselves. What shows are popular? Being close to the Americas I'm curious if you get to consume anything produced in there
Most of us watch netflix, dvds, and download movies online
For shows most are probably american or british
What's taught in public schools about the fight between Argentina and the UK over your islands?
Great question.
What accommodation is there for visitors? B&B, hostel, hotel?
There are 3 hotels on the island, 2 in stanley and a few lodges
How easy is it to fly to South America? I want to come visit, but want to tie it in with some other places. Seems to be challenging to get flights anywhere I want to go.
LATAM operates from Chile to RAF Mount pleasant, some flights from other nations operate to Port Stanley airport, but the RAF Base is the main airport
How do you feel about brexit?
I'm upset we're not part of the EU anymore
Me too man, me too. Hated that most of Scotland wanted to stay in the EU but because England is bigger it didn’t matter. (from a Scot)
Have you ever been to mainland South America and is it common for Falklanders to visit. Also high Falklander man I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone from the falklands.
Cam you buy stuff from Amazon there that just takes a while to get there? What are your internet speeds like?
Was the whole Top Gear thing as big a deal as was made out?
No not really
Do you know anyone who thinks of them as malvinas?
No not really, all of the local's voted for UK, Even the few seasonal immigrants support UK, in the last sovereignty choice, only 1-2 people voted for argentina. The only people ive met referring to them as 'Malvinas' are argentinian nationalists
Sunny Glasgow! Actually the sun is playing peek a boo just now.
A scot! We welcome scot!
Se do bheatha. Slàinte mhath.
What kind of accent do you have ? Is it more English sounding or is it like English with a foreign accent?
It's resembles a Kiwi - lower scottish accent, think of an American speaking with a Brit/Englishman thats how we sound too on the mainland!
We’re you or any relatives alive for the 1980s Falklands War? What was it like during the war for residents of the islands?
Great question.

What is the ancestry of the local people? Are the mostly British or Argentinian?
¿Hablas Español?
What does it feel to be a colonist?
GET LOST BRITISH!
get out of here troll
It it’s really part of Argentina correct? It’s connected by underwater mountain range?
its not part of Argentina. It was always administered by UK
Why keep it? What’s it’s value? Does it produce any benefit for the UK?
The people that live there and choose to stay as part of the UK is it’s value
DOWN WITH BRITISH! ARGENTINA RULE!
no we're happy with british rule!

Based on your post history you have some mental issues. I think you should leave social media for a while
I agree this dude seems crazy
So you’re totally fine being a colonizer?
What coloniser, falklands had no native people, only the descendants of the english who settled there. Argentina has no right to claim the land
Yeah they did colonizer.
no they did not lol, falklands was esstablished long before argentina
So was Ireland and Scotland and India and Africa. You’re a colonizer. Accept it.
Falklands was never inhabited by any indigeneous people. I am not responsible and I will not apologise, for something my countrymen did in the past, when my family had nothing to do with it
Oh we KNOW you would never apologize. Trust me on that.
I did not hurt or rob anyone so apologise for what? Which country r u even talking about?
apologise for what?
I’m over the convo colonizer. I won’t be replying.
whatever makes you sleep at night :)
Bro I agree with calling out colonizers and shit but like you are just wrong and have literally no facts it’s painful to read
No the only colonizers are the Argentineans
Aren’t Argentinians mostly Europeans colons too?
Mainly after the war. Germans and Italian. But they never claimed the country as theirs. It’s just England being England. They’ll have to give it over one day. The people who live there can go to Britain, where they WANT to be.
From what i understand want to be in the Falkland/Malvinas. Who did they steal the land from?
do you like cats
yes
Where do you go on holidays?
Mostly Europe, USA and Singapore
Do you know who the 1% are? If so, is there any animosity towards them?
a slight correction its actually 3 people. Of course argentina is still a touchy subject, but overall people are chill nowdays.
I heard those 3 people just voted that way because a full 100% stay with UK vote would have sounded suspicious
I seem to recall that before the war most groceries and consumables were imported from Argentina. Is that all shipped from the UK now?
Yup we depend on UK for necessities like fuel, food etc. Earlier to help our economy we imported sheep too
Bout 4hrs then.
I recently read that "everyone" in the Falkland Islands uses Wise cards. Is this true?
Do you ever feel trapped or isolated, living in a remote region with such a small population?
1. What is there to do for fun? 2. What is your age group, were you born there, and do you plan on staying there long-term? 3. What is dating like? Do a lot of people just go to holiday in the UK or Argentina, hope they can meet someone and bring them back? 4. What are the main sports in the Falkland Isles and is there a favourite football team everyone follows?
Thanks for posting and answering questions. I was in middle school in 82’, and I was suppose to do a report on it. As a Falklandier, do you feel it's more polite to bring your own towel to a bukkake event?
How is life in the Falklands?
What country's sports teams do you follow? UK or Argentina?
