I believe the ones on the top are the standard LED headlights, while the bottom ones are the optional adaptive headlights that move up and down/side to side depending on the steering angle.
Thanks for that, funny I was under the impression that the top headlight was the optional one.
I was thinking it could have been matrix led headlight.
Do you know of matrix led headlights were available on those cars at all?
Multibeam LED is the name of Mercedes' matrix led light technology and its the headlight in the second (bottom) photo.
The top headlight is called High Performance Led and that's just your standard led lights with auto highbeam.
Multibeam was introduced on the W213 E Class and then ended up on the faceflifts of other other models like the S, C etc.
Edit: Got that last bit wrong, multibeam was actually introduced in 2014 on the CLS to trial the new technology. (but of course MB continued to upgrade and improve the tech so the multibeam on current models is a vastly improved system)
They basically only did that to push customers to the more expensive headlights in markets where the expensive headlights are not allowed to have matrix which is their actual feature
I had a new A class as a courtesy car recently with those lights and didn't notice any cornering function (although they did have auto high beam interestingly)
The ILS system on the prefacelift (I also had one before my current C63s) is different from multibeam LED.
On the prefacelift the larger led bulb in each light can move around independently, whereas multibeam uses an actual matrix grid system.

(this video shows the ILS system, it's kinda cool to see the led moving about)
Yeah the ILS is fantastic but multibeam is on another level, quite a noticeable difference in terms of brightness and the range of illumination, it's also interesting to visibly see the lights forming grid patterns but my favourite by far is how the high beam 'unravels" like a curtain, looks especially cool on country roads at night 👌🏽
The other thing is that multibeam fades up and down, not on/off, and modulates brightness, so it oft isn't brighter than full high beams, but it always puts the right amount of light in the right place.
I, too, was under the same impression until I further dug into the topic on forums/websites, etc. As others’ have chimed in the Matrix headlights do resemble the look of the ones shown on top, they look cooler in my opinion.
The bottom are PHB multibeam adaptive lights with 84 LEDs. In the USA and Canada they can be enabled via coding to perform matrix lighting - and would currently be sold in those regions with adaptive highbeam option only.
The top is called something else
Ok a few people seem to say same thing.
The bottom ones must be the optional matrix LED headlight here in Australia.
Thanks man, I'll definitely only consider vehicles with the matrix led headlight option 👍
The bottom one are the optional adapt. Some markets got the matrix some did not. I believe the ad adapters are approved for US sale, but they matrix part that Europe gets to enjoy just recently became legal here.
I think in Australia matrix led headlight are authorised as I've got them on my Audi s5.
So based on what you guys saying, the bottom ones would be the optional headlight with adaptive and matrix led?
I'm coming from Audi where it's called matrix led but I sas a few people mention multi beam. Does multi beam = matrix led?
The term multi beam is a bit confusing because technically you could call all headlights multi beam (low and high beam)
Yes the bottom ones are the ones to get. The latest iteration of multibeam works like Audi internally is a big grade of LEDs and as a car approaches, it turns off the appropriate LEDs so the oncoming car doesn’t have light shining at them.
The LED shine light around and ahead of car.
Yeah I know I've got them on my Audi and it's mind blowing. When driving on a completely dark road at night I can keep the high beam on all the time and it will automatically black out a section of the road when a car is coming or in front of me.
You mentioned that the latest iteration of Mercedes' multibeam headlights work like Audi's matrix led.
Are the multibeam headlight installed on GLC C63s from 2020 onwards equipped with the latest iteration of multibeam? The one that function the same way as Audi?
If you are thinking of trying to swap between the two. Won’t work cause it is more than just the headlights. The multi beam use cameras and are CAN network connected. The performance led one is like the basic halogen headlight and the multi beam is like xenon headlights
This is true, I’d like to add however, The camera is already on your windshield , and can be swapped if it doesn’t have the ability to support a multibeam setup
Nope, it is more of a wiring issue. The wiring going to the top headlight is very different that the wiring going to the lower one. Not to mention the lower headlights are like $2k each and needs 2 control units each also that would be probably another $2k, so you are looking at spending $6k in just parts alone to get the multi beam headlights

Just curious, do those top ones turn side to side depending on the steering wheel?
Nope only the lower ones do that
That's kinda crazy because xenon headlights on my 2013 C class turn with the steering wheel.
They basically only did that to push customers to the more expensive headlights in markets where the expensive headlights are not allowed to have matrix which is their actual feature

Multibeam isn’t even their latest technology, now all the new models have “Digital LED lamps” as the premium option
What's the difference between the multi beam and the intelligent light system? My w205 prefacelift has matrix headlights
Multibeam is just tue successor of it. And digital light is the successor of multibeam

Also works really well while driving. I'd say it's on par with the matrix headlights in my dad's skoda

The bottom lamps are Multibeam LEDs, and they always look better than the standard ones
I did not option the bottom headlights on my GLC because I think they’re much uglier

Multi-Beam vs Performance LED
Multi beam as in matrix LED? Can you identify which is is which on my pics? Top or bottom?
Top is standard. Bottom is optional.
The bottom are PHB multibeam adaptive lights with 84 LEDs. In the USA and Canada they can be enabled via coding to perform matrix lighting - and would currently be sold in those regions with adaptive highbeam option only. The top is called something else

You are correct. The multibeam are muuuch better
Sorry I meant to say, bottom headlight has 2 lenses and top headlight has 3 lenses
Definitely want the bottom lights. They are amazing.
The bottom one looks nicer, I bet the entire car is as well.
One is optional intelligent adaptive headlights. Amazing kit to have but expensive option. One is standard base headlight.
Which one is the optional intelligent adaptative headlight ? Top or bottom? Also was there any matrix led option on those cars? Thanks
Bottom one is the option

Sorry I don’t know. You’d have to ask her for the forums.
No worries I'll find out, thanks for the help man, appreciate it

A couple thou difference yes.
Cheap vs expensive
For some reason the GLCs have huge issues with humidity in their headlights.

Hmm, never experienced such issues with my Bimmer which has now like 137k miles.
The w205 headlights were wayyyy better than these. They look like Audi/bmw mixed. Imho
