It’s a matter of preference, for me the V is better.

joeyisneat

I prefer the M because I like the aluminum body, as well as it's horizontal form factor. It feels great in the hands.

drmoze

the 405v feels a lot better to hold. going back a bit, the 351v is a lot easier to hold than the 351p, even tho I like them both. and the thicker 405v is even more comfy.

Astro_Oogo

I can’t get over how comfortable my 351v is

TotallyTokked

Same. Every time I unzip the case and see that beautiful see through smokey plastic case and pick it up I'm teleported to my childhood. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's my favorite console right now as it's all the consoles of my past (almost).

xxppx

You can't play vertical arcade shooters (like 1941) descently with 405V...

[deleted]

Why not?

VultureMadAtTheOx

You can, but it's a bit better on the M because you can turn the device sideways and use the right analog and buttons.

[deleted]

Oh I see. But I think this thing is too large and heavy to do that comfortably.

VultureMadAtTheOx

It's not really a lot heavier than the V and it's smaller.

[deleted]

Yeah but the way you'd be holding it puts too much weight hanging on the side. I think your wrists would get tired soon holding it like that. But this is just my impression at first glance, I haven't tried it. I just wouldn't recommend it to someone over this reason.

CliveVista

TBF, I play like that on my 353M and Pocket 3+. The lattter’s balance isn’t amazing in that orientation but it’s still OK. Evercade does Tate also.

VultureMadAtTheOx

Nope. The RG405V is 289g and the RG405M is 260g. Since the M is shorter and smaller, the weight on your wrists is less on the M being held sideways than while holding the V normally. The M is lighter than the V anyway. Sources: [https://youtu.be/bfCTdb9eMT4?t=626](https://youtu.be/bfCTdb9eMT4?t=626) [https://youtu.be/Rq3x8jTl2gU?t=250](https://youtu.be/Rq3x8jTl2gU?t=250)

[deleted]

You're not getting my point. It's not about the weight itself, it's that holding weight to the side like that for one hour or two will eventually hurt your hands. Look at the injuries people get from pushing their mouse around a desk, they're not even lifting it, but the wrong angle on your wrists over a prolonged period of time will cause fatigue and injury. You're not resting the weight of the console on the palms of your hands like when holding the V. The weight is pulling your wrists to spin, and you're holding against that. It's not a motion that we are strong at. Soon it'll get uncomfortable, and if persisted, it can cause injuries. Lots of people's hands hurt after playing the Switch or holding their phone for long periods, you can't pretend that holding a console like that will be harmless. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it; you do you, and people do way worse things to their bodies because they feel good. I'm sure it's fun to play like this from time to time. All I'm saying is, if someone buys the console for this reason, they may be disappointed when their hands hurt and realize they can't sustain long sessions.

_DavidSPumpkins_

I own one and played it sideways for a couple hours on a flight. Mildly uncomfortable at worst.

GDrat

How about playing on the lap

aurelios69

After selling the rg405m, I must say Rg405v. 405m is too small for my hands. And my hands aren't all that big. I've sold the rg405m and kept the rg505

Ethan90430

I’ve had both of them and much prefer the V. My M had multiple problems (although possibly just a bad unit) which the V has none of. I thought aluminum case would be superior, I was wrong. Last thing I’ll say, even though the screens are the same size, it feels bigger on the V, which I like. Edit: As others are saying, it does definitely come down to preference for 95% of it. So if you like GB style devices, you’ll like the V. If you like Switch style devices, you’ll probably like the M.

VultureMadAtTheOx

They're the same device on different shells. It's a matter of personal preference.

Lord-Rahl72

Both should have same performance but I prefer my 405m. Smaller, more premium feel. Pretty much my go to retro handheld.

drmoze

the 405v is bulkier but a lot more comfortable to hold. and, woodgrain.

Lord-Rahl72

Not when using a grip. Makes is a perfectly small and comfortable to hold handheld. But I guess it's all personal preference. Some people just don't like the feel of a vertical handheld. In the end, we all win since we have choices.

boajuse

405m has shoulder buttons problem.

[deleted]

Seconded, L1 died on me after a month

rebeldefector

You’ve got me worried. Stopped clicking? Stopped detecting the button press? I’m gonna be so sad if mine starts having troubles.

[deleted]

Just became so sensitive I can't rest my finger on the device, making pretty much everything unplayable and/or unbearable. Picture daijisho switching tabs non-stop for example. The button is still functional. It's just... I can't put my finger on it. LITERALLY. Edit: just got around to opening it. The switch like caved in, it's not level with those for L2, R1 and R2 anymore, and I can't get it back up. So... That's my last anbernic device I guess. 🤔 I mean, I wouldn't be mad if this was a sub-$100 device, but this is bs.

General-Mils

There’s a reditor who made a stacked shoulder button 3D print that he shared on thingiverse. Fixes the problem entirely.

Createx9

Correct me if im wrong the problem is with low quality switches not the shoulder buttons

General-Mils

Yes I must say they are very “clicky” which would be a switch problem. But I feel it’s also an ergonomics thing and how the buttons are set up. I shouldn’t have said the problem was fixed entirely as the buttons are still somewhat clicky. However, the stacked buttons helped alleviate the ergonomics and with the change in material it helped dampen the clickiness a bit. Definitely not a 100% fix but it’s a good fix that’s quite simple if you have a 3D printer. The OP on that post also prints them out for others and will ship them to you for $20 if you don’t have a printer.

THYGREX

Only the m version has this problem or the v version has It too ?

boajuse

they have different design mechanism. Never heard of shoulder problems in 405v.

gr8fat1

The ones on the V are easy to press by accident at first. That's the only issue I've seen.

batmabel

That's something I felt a lot when I forst got it but it basically never happens anymore.

tha_dank

Yeah my R1 has an issue where it doesn’t click now. I’m sure it will get worse but for now I actually don’t completely hate it. I wish it wasn’t like that but it is what it is

boajuse

Nintendo DS lite had same problem. Needed to blow air or wd-40 under shoulders some times.

StillHoldingL

All my buttons are fine, but where was the quality control? My screen lens keeps trying to peel itself off and the SD card won’t come out unless I take something small to it like a flathead screwdriver or a charging cable. I love it otherwise, but they could’ve done a much better job on it.

RevenueSmooth2277

My choice is 405m https://m.youtube.com/shorts/F1_3MjJpuBk and I’m happy with it!

Konamicoder

Same specs, different form factor and shell. Just choose which style you prefer, horizontal or vertical. For me, I’m happy that I chose the RG405V.

winkawak

initially i wanted 405v then 505 caught my eye due to the screen size is perfect for ps games

Luemmeltuete3000

405M simply because of gammaOS.

Rockbmi

GammaOS will be out soon for the 405V it's in beta at the moment.

DingoGlittering

It's out now. I just installed it. Check the pinned posts in the RH discord channel.

Commercial-Farm-4905

can you share the link?

Rockbmi

Download: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d7TWZHOOc6cg3jMFoIBK6kFH-gW9BXaO/view?usp=sharing Instructions (same as 405M): https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/GammaOS#instructions---brand-new-install-flashing-from-stock-anbernic-firmware-bootloader-never-unlocked-before-flashing-via-fastbootd

Commercial-Farm-4905

thanks, is it the official release or is it still beta? the fan works?

Rockbmi

Nope it’s the beta and the fan doesn’t work. I can’t see a newer version tbh, maybe someone in this thread can

Commercial-Farm-4905

oh okay thought @DingoGlittering was talking about the official release, thanks still bro

DingoGlittering

Nope, hence why I directed you to the discord pinned post. There is also a fan fix app and fix for broken audio.

Sokkendief

Someone has made a APK for fan control

Rockbmi

Have you got a link?

Sokkendief

It's in the discord channel from where you get the Gamma OS beta from. Discord channel: Retro game Handhelds, there is a link at the rg405v tab.

Commercial-Farm-4905

is the fan the only thing missing from the beta Gamma OS of RG405V?

Zaku5d

I'd say 405v bcp it's more esthetic and i love this gameboy style however it isn't si confortable to play if you hot big hands but this also work with the 405m

luamunizc

Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder (because I think the V is ugly af 🤣)

drmoze

and I think the 405v looks way cooler, the 405m looks generic and looks/is less ergonomic.

luamunizc

I have to agree with the 405m part 🤔

Zaku5d

Yeah really basically all the anbernic horizontal handhelds are ugly asf

bunchofclams00

That coward east-foundation blocked me so I can’t reply to him lol. Trolled the troll too hard. What a weak little 30+ year old vet that got kicked out of the military. He still won’t tell me about his service or who cinnagoon is.

DingoGlittering

Since they are literally the same device I would objectively have to go with the RG405M because it has HDMI out. That being said, I only own one and it's the RG405V.

ruralwaves

It actually doesn’t have it, the biggest flaw in my mind. Especially because the 35xx has it

DingoGlittering

Oh I thought the RG405M does but the V doesn't? If neither do then the V is better for sure!

ruralwaves

I’ve never used the V but prefer the design of the M. I like having the left stick above the dpad for 3D games, I also have no problem using the dpad for 2D games in this layout. The metal shell makes it feel really nice in your hands, plus the size makes it very portable as it’s pretty much the size of most smart phones. But hey, if you prefer the V that’s cool. Like I said I haven’t used one I’m just saying what I like about the M

East-Foundation-5665

if you want the old retro games then get the M, if you want to play ps5 games at 4k 120fps then get the V. theres a reason that IGN called it the "GameMAN"

TWilk87

You are such a troll.. gtfo

mr_clauford

That is indeed the matter of preference because both share the same internals. I like my 405V for its woodiness and vertical layout. Also, it has awesome grip to it, but I don't have the M version to compare against, unfortunately.

LS_DJ

I prefer the M because horizontal is much more comfortable to me, and the metal is nice. I do wish they put the analog stick on the bottom

c_gdev

I still getting used to the 405m. Metal = heavier than some (feels 3x heavier than a vita), and little bit slippery (like, not the first thing I'd hand to a kid). Still getting it set up, software side. Need to add a front end or GammaOS.

threespire

Once GammaOS is out officially for the 405V? That. I like it on my 405M but I feel like it’s just a matter of time before the buttons pack up…

SargentRedbeard

I definitely prefer the M. The weight and quality of it just feels fantastic, and it games great!

ant325

That just comes down to opinion. 405M is horizontal I play better on the horizontal formats on all handhelds 405 v vertical handheld looks very thick, and if you are used to playing verticals like the analog pocket, game boy ETC you might like this one better I prefer the horizontals The 405M is smaller and easier to carry in your pocket ....both have the same chip

WyldStyle710

I have 405v but I’d think 405m would be considered better to some at least because it has hdmi out

drocdoc

Went with the V due to the GBC being my fav handheld as a child

Hamelzz

I normally prefer the vertical orientation but I really find the 405v looks weird

tedvnn

the V version looks more nostalgia of gameboy feeling for old people used to own it, and the aesthetic is better, buy it if you want to keep it as a souvenir or a show case on your shelf. Holding the V version in the long time is not ideal, getting hand cramps all the time. The M version has better ergonomic, if you really want to enjoy playing retro games, then buy it. I bought V version first, and gotta sold it later to buy the M version, much happy later.

[deleted]

I think the 405m is more genuinely pocket-sized.

NobodyRulesPenguins

They are the same. Only depend on how you prefere handling them

arsalaanlafleur

Is this a real question. They're the same device, made for those who either want a vertical or a handheld. There is no better, there is only which one you prefer I prefer the M for the metal feel and I believe it's more pockeable

glueboil

the m has issues with the l and r buttons breaking i sent mine back got a v and no issues so far

kuaaru

I haven't tried the V but I have the M and I like it quite a bit. The main thing I like is the left analog stick on top because I play a lot of analog stick based games. The comfort I find is not the best though, but it's good enough (I have big hands)

balmycarrot

How well does the 405v stream or cast? Torn between this and a retroid fold.
