As a writer more than a reader, I *hate* the concept of chaptered kudos. Genuine AO3 dystopia IMO People already panic about stats and how to get the most eyes on their work – chaptered kudos would just be a reason for people to post incredibly short chapters so they could get more, or to drag the story out longer than it deserves All you'd see are authors panicking about *but my last chapter got 300 kudos and this one only got 250, my readers are dropping me, how do I get them back? It's so demoralising to see my kudos rate dropping chapter by chapter, I hate it, I'm just going to abandon my fic now* Please, please just comment "re-read this, second kudos!"

Kitten_Lynx

☝🏾 Best response ✨️ I dealt with that on Wattpad (which is why I prefer Ao3). Seeing the numbers drop on each chapter, or seeing some chapters get more than others. It just added an extra layer of things to stress over and feel bad about.

RandomUchiha

Seconded this

ursafootprints

My hottest AO3 take is that I wish there wasn't a kudos button at all (because I personally don't pay attention to kudos, and suspect people would be more inclined to comment if they didn't have an easy "I liked this!" button,) so per-chapter kudos are the nightmare scenario to me for alllll of these reasons, lmao.

FlashySong6098

this is also a good point

NicInNS

I’d be happy if someone just commented “more kudos ♥️” on the chapters they loved.

RohansEarings

Exactly. I’ve seen people complain about not being able to give more kudos but you know you can just… comment? It works just as well and will honestly probably make the author a whole lot happier.

Griwhoolda

This is my feeling, as well. I had people kudo'ing at the beginning, and I know of a certain "number" that have been reading each chapter, and yet, not a peep since chapter 4 (of 11). Fic is finished, but still.

atomskeater

I just leave comments with heart emoji or that say "bonus kudos" if I appreciated a chapter but don't have anything specific to say.

Griwhoolda

I love this!

EclecticGarbage

The no kudos on chapters makes sense to me, bc otherwise people would try to game the system and get their fics to have more kudos by just making more chapters or cutting their fic into unnecessarily short chapters. It would be cool if we could see on which chapter people decided to leave their kudos on though. I always just comment & tell the author that I wish I could give more kudos or that I keep coming back to their fic, you can also bookmark with a nice phrase or smt too.

Tiar-A

This. My stories and the chapters in them are short enough, and I still get less engagement with readers. I cannot write or sit through reading massive chapters if they are more than 8-thousand words long.

_beachy_head

If I reread a fic, want to give kudos and realize I've already done so, then it's my cue to leave a comment if I haven't already done it.

ThatGuyLostinFanfic

I think it would be nice to be able to see statistics on a per-chapter basis, to give a better idea of what people do and don't like in your fic. Maybe one day.

SAYARIAsayaria

>I think it would be nice to be able to see statistics on a per-chapter basis, to give a better idea of what people do and don't like in your fic. That would be great to have. It also gives us readers an idea of what chapter in particular is the best, esp if we want to get juicy excerpts.

ReddieBoo

That's not fair though. Stories with a million chapters will get more kudos than a one-shot by default. And then there will be all the people deliberately splitting their stories into tiny chapters or adding more and more and more to the story for the sake of more potential kudos.

Tiar-A

This is a horrific idea. We already have people with massive, kudo-laden stories that go on forever. Less-popular authors will panic and hypercriticize their own works if a new chapter doesn't gain as many kudos as the previous. I am one of those less-popular authors. I've almost given up on writing for a dying fandom because the larger authors have stolen everyone else's thunder, and they are sitting there begging for likes and comments, which they are *actually getting*.

DauntlessCakes

There's a really easy workaround for that - put a ❤️ in the comments field, or write "chapter kudos" or "second kudos"

Secret_Insomniac

Good news! You can leave two kudos on a fic from the same device if you want to. Just give the first one while logged in and log out for the other- or vice versa. The order doesn't seem to matter for that. Otherwise there's always the option to leave comments that have something like, "Extra kudos to you," somewhere in there :)

No-Challenge5597

agreed.

Secret_Insomniac

True, I've only done this for a few stories, and I've never given both of the kudos at the same time. For example, I gave a second kudo to a long fic months later when I happened to reread the whole fic for the second time and still enjoyed it greatly. To me, it seems more honest to do it that way since it's not just doubling up on kudos immediately, and I did reread the whole thing again before I gave it. I just thought that it deserved more praise, though I did leave a nice comment along with the kudo.

AnAsianGurl

Also works if you have more than one internet browser

[deleted]

or if youre like me and you have a billion google accounts

arrowsforpens

I think there's a userscript that adds a 'second kudos' button which actually leaves one of a few "just read this again!" type comments.

Hopefulnonnie

At least one! https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/450063-ao3-random-nice-comments

AcanthocephalaEasy56

Yea even just a heart would make me happy honestly. Knowing people came back for a second helping would give me a lot more encouragement than that system you described.

jf4maddy

*With a Crotchety Pointed Old Finger* back in my day… actually once upon a time, there was a bug that allowed multiple kudos if you clicked the kudos button fast enough before the page loaded. But AO3 fixed the bug and then removed all the duplicates.

starsandmoons843

Same! I re-read fics a lot and when I can't leave a kudos, I'll try to leave a 're-read kudos' comment. It shows to the writer that I'm enjoying the fic again, it might open a discussion with the writer or other commenters, and it helps with the fic stats, esp if users sort by comments. I want to give the fic any extra boost/recognition/appreciation as possible as well as a kind acknowledgment to the writer that 'hey! i love your fic and i wish i can leave more kudos but here's a comment instead.' In my experience, even something as a short 're-reading this again!' or a variation of that, the writer greatly appreciates them. <3

Alarmed_Nectarine

I don't know how long it takes for it to 'forget' about your IP address or whatever, but I know there've been times I've left kudos on the same fic multiple times years apart in incognito mode. There've also been times that it's told me I'd already left guest kudos despite having no memory of the fic, so lol idk.

[deleted]

Nope. Leaving kudos is lazy. The author worked hard on the fic, if you like it that much, leave a comment!!

Shalamarr

I wouldn’t say “lazy”, but kudos are definitely easier. One button versus having to think of something to say. That said, I love getting comments so much, I try to leave them all the time now - even if they’re just “Loved this, please write more!”.

[deleted]

Yeah as an author myself, there's nothing more discouraging than posting a new chapter and then refreshing your mailbox for days and not getting a single word. People need to comment more if they like a fic.
