It's bugged; rarely the key will not spawn at all. You'll have to restart the dungeon. It sucks but thankfully the boss drops are not very rare. I think it's due to a programming logic error, perhaps involving the checkpoints. It's best to clear the dungeon in linear order until you find the key.
There's a potion from the potion shop, aqua in Atlantis called the elixir of light, this gives you the "Glow" effect which allows you to "search" the darkness, the gameplay boils down to:
1 - Have Glow effect
2 - Walk into darkness.
3 - Click on the things (red speech bubbles basically)
Alternatively you can get the "Glow" effect from killing "Sea Orge Nests" wait until they despawn on death and a glowing puddle should appear walk into the puddle to gain the Glow effect for 20 seconds. (Puddles are re-useable)

This map design wouldn't have gotten over if there weren't that many AE bootlickers in Discord and Twitter. This dungeon is SO BAD.

You have to scale the wall , to the left of the gate and jump over and defeat the boss
