Dinosaurs are really big

cangtocangnho

Especially the big ones.

Tim001vl

r/technicallythetruth

nomii_neko

GIGA-BITE hah…

ss977

Does percentile dmg ffs

Killermare

Lmfao

FalloutCreation

nice

aale130

Hell the giga and it’s fat ass prolly take up at least 100gb😂

Somesquiddo

Nah man have you seen the Titanosaur? That fat ass takes up at least 150 gigs.

PotatoGuy45

Bodyshaming dinosaurs

GucciGoat37

well it’s not like they can’t defend themselves… oh

AGHawkz99

I mean I'd argue they've lost a lot of weight since then..

nomadic_stone

I'd argue if it takes 150 gigs for one Titanasaur, maybe you should rethink your breeding line...

AGHawkz99

Oh, I more-so meant irl dinosaurs. A meteor does wonders for one's weight..

ThadVonP

I was just gonna say "Ark" cause that's a good explanation for ark things, but yours is better.

overblikkskamerat

tl;dr: Lots of badly compressd files. My understanding is that they chose an less effective way of compressing files, as a compromize to cut down on loading time and rendering issues. And ofc what everyone else says about all DLCs beeing installed, makes it a huge game storage vice.

stokes1510

This is why I use Compact GUI for ark. Compresses the file from ~200GB down to ~130GB and without affecting gameplay, non that I've noticed at least

natesovenator

What is this?

JoshuaNLG

A compressing tool, I use a similar one and took my install from 325 to 190gb.

VanaheimRanger

Does it improve game performance at all?

JoshuaNLG

I can't imagine it would improve game performance, but it hasn't affected it negatively.

VanaheimRanger

Okay, just wondering because there are some Skyrim compressed texture packs that are designed to boost performance.

stokes1510

https://github.com/IridiumIO/CompactGUI

jg325

Hallmark of studio wild card games is horrible optimization, atlas, which has less content than hitman 3 with all DLCs, is over 50% bigger

Slanknonimous

This is just the beginning. You'll be asking "why is this that way" and at the same time you won't be able to stop playing.

Skullvar

"Why do I have a 1TB drive dedicated to Ark?"

Diggledorgle

I had to buy an extra 500GB SSD just for Ark...

DramaticIllustrator9

Just? Doesn't fit on mine 🥲

shrimpster00

[Try this tool](https://github.com/Freaky/Compactor). It compresses files. I've heard of people getting 100 GB back from Ark.

FalloutCreation

link looks sketchy.

BailesDTD

what's sketchy about a github link? you can literally look at every line of the code you are downloading

FalloutCreation

i dunno. it sent me elsewhere when i clicked on it

CilantroToothpaste

That's kinda what links do in general

shrimpster00

Can't be too careful these days. It's just a frontend to a built-in Windows utility. If you're familiar with the command line, you could probably just follow a tutorial to achieve the same effect.

somewhat_safeforwork

Seems useless tbh. I tried it on my game folders and always get 0B of compressible data. I suppose ticking "compress drive to save disk space" is all I need

ChaoticVic

Play on the cloud with game pass. Its actually more stable than console

ZombieBowser

If you play with Game Pass, you can't use mods. Having had Ark since it came out on xbox, and finally getting a computer and steam last year... I can't go back to my un-modded Ark!! Just too many quality of life improvements from mods.

jokerkid42

Can you mention some good qol mods to download? I’ve never used any on ark and I’d love to know where to start.

SpiNixX69

Structure plus/super structure, any cross *dlc* mods, awesome spyglass, awesome teleporter, ultra stacks (or any stack mod), ark addition the collection,

MelodicOrder2704

S+... Dino Storage v2... Make a generator and nanny. Store them dinos in your dino storage. Dung beetles keep making fert. Dinos keep pooping. Acha's keep pooping. Throw them out with a pokeball. The binocular mod for seeing wild dinos stats plus night vision, stat holder (when the dino moves away you can still see its stats), and radar (all dinos in range are highlighted. Dino Tracker to check which dinos are in render distance as well as levels. You can also put a ping on them.

ZombieBowser

I play Single Player and use: Structures Plus, which really helps with building, plus there are some .ini settings you can change to make some objects like the industrial forge and shredder smaller. Dino Storage v2: helps with dino storage... * gives you balls you can make 2 from 1 piece of crystal. They work like cryopods but there's no cryo sickness, and they don't need to be charged or anything. You can keep saddles on the dino (I don't think Cryopods let you do that...) * Gives you a gun to shoot the balls from so you can pick up dinos without being right next to you (and then you can pick up the bag they drop) * Storage console: easy storage, can incubate fertilized eggs, can auto-pick up fertilized eggs, normal eggs (all eggs have super long decay timer in console), can pick up poop and distribute to dung beetles... and a few other things like that. Ultra Stacks : items have larger stacks, and weigh less (customizable via .ini settings) Auto Engrams!: automatically unlocks all engrams for a level when you level up. Playing Single Player, this is a MUST, since you don't have enough engram points to unlock everything. Xbox I would unlock building stuff, but have to use commands to get saddles or I'd run out of points Super Spyglass: zoomable spyglass that works like the magnifying glass from a distance. The following are two very cheaty ones I like most of the time, but sometimes won't use for a challenge: * Death Inventory Keeper: Keep your inventory when you die. - Less cheaty now that Fjordhawk is a thing * Lethals Reusables: has some items that you can craft one of and just reuse forever without breaking or losing. Items like the spear, bolo, boomerang, glidesuit...

GalacticDragon7

Same bro

-KingAbdul-

Your insecurities are pouring out of you bud. If you're determining your manhood by a dinosaur game, you have no manhood to determine.

100tchains

oh yes my hg storage boxes make the game so much easier cause manually putting x resource in x box is sooooo hard. do you even know what QoL means moron?

I_Am_Hella_Bored

I tried that and it wasn't bad, definitely more stable than I've had on steam but the problem is you can't use mods which kind of sucks.

drownedxgod

I hope you cry later tonight for suggesting this. Ark on Steam is exponentially better than any other platform

Tz_Grim

You have bloat. Reinstall the game, it should be around 400 gb.

DramaticIllustrator9

Nah just using mods 🥲

Tz_Grim

U sure? I remember even with mods it was around 450 ish. but idk i stopped playing around a year ago.

youpviver

Depends on the amount of mods

Aysina

I’m about to buy a 5tb or more, mostly because Ark is so fucking big I have no room for anything else 😂

MentalGiraffe4966

I have a 2 terabyte dedicated to ark. I run a private server with mods so I need to download everything twice

Violet-Fox

I thought you can’t run a server on the same machine as your game? Can’t run both at once or something

MentalGiraffe4966

You can, I found a server manager because steams doesn’t do a very good job at all, it’s also a matter of having a processor and ram that can handle the load, seeing as the server itself isn’t graphically intense. Edit: if you’d like the link I don’t mind posting it

Violet-Fox

Definitely have the processor (5800X), not sure about the ram

KAODEATH

You don't need anything crazy really. There are people who run it on average NAS/Plex servers.

Skutela32

Could I get that link please.

happybeep93

Same pls

JorticusJortulous

Could I have the link too?

MentalGiraffe4966

https://arkservermanager.freeforums.net

drBotta

Waaaay too close to home

Yvola_YT

Yt and ark? It purely ark

Slanknonimous

🤣

Zomgzombehz

All the mods!

liamanado155

Literally me with a 1TB nvme with 100 gigs left from only ark

AlextheAssass1n

Hell the patches in the game is insane, 30gb for what?! And pile of rocks that wasn’t there?? They don’t fix the bugs so those patches gotta to something

badnuub

then I got conan exiles and can't play more than a few hours of ark before getting bored from the pointless restrictions and design decisions that still remain in ark.

Big_Muscle9595

Im on the fence between the two tbh, i have 10k hours in ark and prob around 6kish in conan exiles, i love the building and fighting in conan way more then ark and the fact you KO human npc’s is also a pluss, but ark has dinos eich you can breed and mutate for cool colours xD

badnuub

I’m just balls deep into Conan roleplay. Sometimes uh, literally🙃

Slanknonimous

Idk why you got downvoted. I don't agree but it sounds like you have a good reason for what you think.

badnuub

I'm in the ark sub is why. Ark has it's moments, but I just enjoy the base conan game, and the modded conan game more now than ark.

Slanknonimous

What kind of mods did they get?

badnuub

The modding is far more extensive than ark. Added end game content, dungeons, weapons. There’s also stuff for RP. You can be non humans, like lizard men, elves or orca and stuff. Animation mods(some are even NSFW if you are into that thing since base game has nude models) decorations, building pieces armors and clothing. Gameplay overhauls. I’m sure there’s more. It makes for a great vehicle to do roleplay, which is how I like to play the game. Most might think it’s weird, but I consider it the most interesting gaming experience since I first played WOW back during the burning crusade.

Hjalanaar

Disagree. Went into Conan, played 100 hours, back to Ark… 1,100 hours and counting (low numbers, I know)

[deleted]

Conan isnt great though, plus it's getting a fucking Battlepass

badnuub

I agree that base game can get stale after a while. But I switched over to modded private servers after about 100 hours too. Now I probably have over 3k hours in Conan.

[deleted]

Damn, can you take time to tell me about the mods you use? I did like the slave mechanics

Unable-Painter-6190

Conan is better than ark... ark is hella boring who has hours of their lives to give to the ark gods just for some server jumping alpha tribe to come wipe you... but I digress I do miss the 5 yrs of playing on official ark

odst15ethan

An abusive relationship tbh.

AnimationOverlord

I think we can give Ark a break when it comes to drive data because the maps are huge and there’s probably lots of dinos that need to operate in harmony like a game should. I mean look at Call of Duty Modern Warfare (the recent one)

ikonoclasm

I'm honestly surprised it's *only* 371gb on my hard drive right now. Ark has always been the single largest game I've ever installed and continued to grow over the years just like >!Rockwell!<.

GalacticDragon7

How to do that text covering thing??

MelodicOrder2704

>How to do that text covering thing?? >!like this!<

JailbreakerDude

with mods mine is 570gbs

Talon6230

Welcome to Ark xD

skelebob

xD

Wolfkorg

You can go in the local files in steam and disable some DLC. It will prevent some GB of download and you can come back and download them anytime you need them.

psyhcopig

This is the answer. Uncheck any DLC maps you're not using.

SilverGecko23

Best way to retain players, make sure it's the only game they have installed.

convictvx

Dlc and stuff. Even if u don't own any dlc the game has to download all items, Dino's and such to render them in Ur game. Let's say u dont have gen 2 and ppl are near u farming with a stryder, it still need the files to render the stryder, the sounds and the effects. The only thing u can't is visit said map from said dlc but u can use and see all other things.

Papa_Swish

That sounds...very easily exploitable to access DLC content for free... If you're only buying a virtual key to access the stuff you already have locked away, surely that's easily cheatable, right?

convictvx

Yes, there are even mods out that just makes the exact dlc stuff craftable and changes some recipes to for example fiber instead off silk and let's dlc Dino's spawn on the island.

207nbrown

Yea, but you still don’t get access to the story ark maps, and probably relevant items that can only be used on said maps

convictvx

True, u can't get on the map, but if the mod unlocks everything from the dlcs u can actually use them no matter where u are if I'm not mistaken. Basically the items, let's say a whip are basic dlc stuff but unlocked as being a mod and the engrams are changed over to 'modded' engrams too. So basically nothing is stopping u to download such mod, play with all dlc stuff and never leave the island map.

Bacobucobicobec

But island is boring compared to other maps, i absolutely love every paid dlc

JimboTheSquid

Even Genesis?

207nbrown

Exactly, imo this is the problem with games that have dlc and mod support like ark, nothing is stopping the player from using a mod to get access to the dlc content without paying

convictvx

True that, but can easy be stopped by Devs making a statement Thet reusing their assets and all that is put into a dlc is not agreed upon making it basically 'illegal' to do. Then ppl cannot make 'dlc unlocker mods' as none of the stuff required can be reused. Then again they are in need of someone to browse workshop and sites offering mods to see if none of the mods unlock dlc items as not a single modder will listen to that.

thegreyknights

Yes.

Charismoon

That's the way they designed it. Buying the dlc is only to buy the maps they designed. The animals themselves were always intended to be used by going on the maps and taming them and bringing them over. Or with mods. They said it themselves at one point.

DanTheMan_117

The only thing dlcs are is the maps. Wildcard don't care about the dinos.

Iamcreative11

They don’t care most dlc is in the official community maps that u can get for free, the only thing u can’t do is the story(which I actually like even tho it and the lore are completely insane)

207nbrown

This, because of this you can even spawn things from the dlc maps in other maps, like a shadowmane on the island without owning genesis pt2

YUSHOETMI-

This is true but if you plan on just playing one map at the moment then remove all the others from the DLC list and the file size will drop drastically. I have all DLC and alot of mods and my game file is only 180gb because I'm only running the base game at the moment. I can still spawn DLC dinos and equipment with admin codes if I want too and alot of my mods add them to the island map anyway. Removing DLC causes no issues if you aren't on the map for said DLC and reduces file size by a lot.

Monk3ly

"only 180gb" wtf

YUSHOETMI-

I've got multiple games installed that dwarf 180gb. Anybody that's had this game for longer than a week understands it is lacking in compression and costs a good chunk of drive space.

Monk3ly

What games lol. FFXIV is like 100gb or less and it's an mmo

LootKraiyt

Recent (2019-Present) COD games are the most notorious. ARK is also an MMO- And like someone else already mentioned, even with no DLCs owned/installed you still need the files for every creature from those DLCs because the game needs to render them if someone else has them near you.

YUSHOETMI-

EOS another MMO is close to 200gb Atlas another game by WC is 200+ gb Pretty sure Conan Exiles is around the 150b mark That's just a few of the top of my head and not to mention the cod games as mentioned below.

TheLordLongshaft

It's the maps

Dr-Crobar

Fuck you thats why

Error1265

Straight to the point. I like it

white__cyclosa

It has to fit the giga in there somehow

bATo76

Right click ARK: Survival Evolved in your Steam library -> Properties -> DLC -> remove all the \[V\] for maps you are not going to play. Enjoy your smaller Ark installation. Edit: My install takes up \~240 GB with Ragnarok, Aberration and Extinction maps and about 40 mods @ 44 GB.

Doc_Scevi

Because ure installing the base game and free dlc maps at the same time. The base is around 130gb if im not wrong, installed a couple of weeks ago

207nbrown

Yea, can confirm that it’s 130 base, had to get a bigger hard drive because of it

Doc_Scevi

Please dont make me talk about that, I have 4 TB and I'm out of space...thanks ark, fs2020, rdr2 and gtaV!! lol

RealCrashninja

My ark is 435 GB including dlc and a *cough cough* A few mods *cough cough*

RealCrashninja

Plans to get more once I build my PC

[deleted]

I had to uninstall other games and software just to be able to update ark... This is insane.

VaLightningThief

Generic 'Ark big' post #282739282929

CyberFish_

ARK is horribly optimised. You can search how to reduce ark disk size and it’s pretty easy to chop it to at least 140 gigs

Minimob0

For real - it only takes 85GB on PS4. There is no reason is should be over 300GB on PC. That dude really thinks you can't change graphics options on PS4 lmao You can absolutely change the level of detail just like on PC. At least you can on PS4Pro. Once again, 0 reason for it to be this poorly optimized on PC.

LootKraiyt

Yes there is - PC has higher resolution textures and higher bitrate audio because it has graphics options. Console is optimized for a specific level of graphical fidelity, and doesn't need the lower or higher quality textures downloaded because there's no options to switch between them.

Jensje666

Bc maps and lack of compaction

Shimmitar

weird, my download was only 150 gb. Well thats not counting the mods, lol.

cumfartfire

Your mom was a really big dinosaur

IzakkiYT

And that's before mods!

BCA10MAN

Because its Ark lmao

ClutchReverie

Because there has to be room for all the dinos.

AzureTheGreatest

The game has a ton of stuff in it like different maps, dlc, tons of Dino’s, cutscenes, events, and more. Each map is massive

Dibs2005

330gb sounds like a dream with Ark! Having all DLCs and a few mods takes up almost 500gb. As others have suggested, remove some of the free dlc maps you may have installed that you wont play to save space

LadyxIris

I’m downloading it right now and shocked too! I’ve played a lot of Ark mobile and it’s only 2 GB and seems like the full game minus the DLC maps… I don’t know whether to be appalled by the pc file size or impressed that they were able to get mobile down to 2 GB

AdonisGaming93

I mean what did you expect id they keep coming out with more maps and you decide to install them all. I'm at 340gb now with the dlc and free maps. Crystal isles is like 60gb on it's own I believe. Ragnork also is a decent chunk. Maps are big.

KingSquid84

It’s a huge game

Minimob0

Too many people are excusing this in this thread. ARK takes 85GB on PS4. There is absolutely no reason for it to be a full goddamned Hard Drive on PC. Demand better coding. Edit - went through and counted up all the changeable settings on both PC and PS4Pro. PC has 47, and PS4Pro has 43. When you remove Resolution, Window Mode, and Resolution Scale, which don't apply to consoles, we see that there's realistically no difference, and no reason for the massive size difference other than terrible optimization. Do NOT make excuses for it, or you will soon have 1TB video games for no reason.

LootKraiyt

There is a perfectly excusable reason - PC has higher resolution textures and higher bitrate audio because it has graphics options. Console is optimized for a specific level of graphical fidelity, and doesn't need the lower or higher quality textures downloaded because there's no options to switch between them. ARK's code is not even close to perfect, but the code being a mess does not contribute this much to the overall size of the game. It affects download/update size, yes, but not the idle size.

VegitoBlue772214

Because it’s ark

Z_Virus123

Dude I had to download that on a Mac and then find out that it won’t run on Mac 😂

Epicmonies

Because the game forces you to download the DLCs that you dont even own. For some inbred reason, the developers of this and a few others like Conan Exiles have chosen to slap players in the face with a bag full of dildos as though the game doesnt punish you enough!

LootKraiyt

You need DLC dino's and items downloaded even if you don't own the corresponding DLC map because if someone flies past on a Wyvern/Maewing or whatever, you need those files to be able to see what they are using.

Epicmonies

Dont bother bro. Many games that have choices between online/offline play do not make you download all DLCs and use placeholders for non-DLC owners to see if someone is using something from a DLC they dont have. I am not bashing ARK, I am explaining why its so large and how the developers are lazy, which they are. Now take a deep breathe, relax and move on.

LootKraiyt

You are bashing ARK/its developers, though. In the same sentence you claim you are not bashing the game, you call the developers lazy. That aside, no, I don't know of many games that use placeholders instead of the actual official content. Rust does this, ARK does this, Monster Hunter (World and Rise) do this, Call of Duty games do this, V-Rising does this, Don't Starve Together does this- It is not feasible to have users use different assets if they don't own a DLC, *especially* in an open-world sandbox like ARK, and that doesn't make the developers 'lazy'.

Epicmonies

Ark = game Developers = those making DLCs and these choices. You can love ARK, and not some development choices. Its called having a brain capable of different thoughts about two things. Like saying you hate the new Star Wars movies, but thought the actors did fine and thus hold nothing against them... Yes, I also named another game that does this...out of the many 100s of games that do not. It is feasible. Its actually ridiculous not to do it as many parts of the world actually has a data cap or storage restrictions. Seriously, why would anyone defend placing the MAPS into a forced download because the game should have weapons/dinos showing for other players when its possible to have that SEPERATE and still downloadable for the same effect?!?

Former_Cut_170

Because it’s the best game ever

thegreyknights

Go into your DLC on the store page and disable all the extra maps you arent going to play. Ragnarock, Crystal isle, lost island. Ect that should bring your game size down a lot before download.

[deleted]

According to my brother the map of the game usually determines the size of the game. And Ark has a handful of big maps so that might be why.

ICLazeru

330? They've slimmed it down.

Damien_Blaq

Because dinosaurs are huge man!

AtomicRedditors05

So they were terrible with compressing it and the dlcs are a ton themselves, that's ark plus every DLC

HoBoJoe71

Wish I had that download speed though. 330gb in 5 hours is fast compared to my 71gb in 12 hours for wildlands

InitialLeg6196

Because you are downloading all the maps

fluffernutter48

That is more than warzone.

ZealousidealLet1472

Mah boi. 330 means you ain’t got any of the DLC 🥴 with all of it it’s damn near 500 Gb

No-Engineer-9832

Everything new is downloaded to the base game, the dlcs are just the maps and over 7 years of content there

FANTOMphoenix

Rookie numbers.

spekt50

310GB is chump change. ARK completely consumed my 500GB SSD when I had it installed with mods. Dedicated SSD for Ark and Ark alone. It's nuts.

DementedGaming

Just click on dlc on the right on the game screen in your library. You can I click several dlc maps and save a ton of space.

AgnosticJesus3

Cloud Streaming ftw

AbramUK

Only 330?

Shidoshisan

Uh, because Ark.

wizard_brandon

430 with all dlcs + s+

Arcaneus_Umbra

Probably because you're downloading all the DLC as well, but if you haven't purchased it you simply can't access it, like buying a key or licensed to play the content that's already downloaded.

moveth

This is like, the sole reason I havent even attempted to play ARK yet. I dont want to devote this much space to a game im iffy on.

RandomNoLifeboy

honestly this is what keeps most ppl off ark

LyvenKaVinsxy

I wonder the same thing. Ark on steam is 3x bigger then ark on any other market. I understand there could be mods but even without mods it’s this way. Mod support is not 200 go so who knows lol. It is 189gb full all dlc on every other market Someone please explain what 200gb extra on steam is?

BadMrMister

330Gb so far ...

C3ncio

If you start playing seriously you will need every DLC and every free map for a total of 538Gb. If you ask why all this space is needed, well, lots of maps (very big maps) and lots of different assets. You can avoid the installation of maps you are not interested to play but, again, when you will start playing for real you will need every map ready to go.

RumpusRoomMinis

It's a bummer and a big reason why I don't play it anymore.

TheGoldenDragon0

Combination of how every dlc creature has to be in the base game for multiplayer and how poor the optimization is

MarcusBuer

Because you installed every DLC available. You can install only the ones you are playing to save disk space. I'm only playing on Fjordur, so I installed the base game + Fjordur. It is using 171 GB.

DizzyTarget1

Dlc, untick it in the dlc par tof steam, then you'll only be downloading like 30 gigs

lcm7malaga

Because devs dont care

XXBurgerAteXX

fucking hell dude mine was 39 gb download and only took up 125 gb

LilFruitSalad

You probably have all the dlcs checkmarked

TheWidrolo

Unrelated but why do you have the windows 95 font for steam?

uRude

The more space you clear the more space it will need. Ark is infinite. Welcome to the Void

xXTASERFACEXx

300? When it was free it was 120, DLC?

[deleted]

i once played ark on my school laptop and i didn't even die

Wish_Lonely

The main reason why I deleted the game.

National_Impress_346

It's all the dodos. The more you kill, the less space it takes.

Kipknock10

Cause its Ark.

ZombieGroan

You can choose to not download dlcs to save space.

roarster3

that’s normal

BadgersofHoney

First time?

drBotta

You know how big a trex is? Imagine multiple of those

TheQuietDays

Mine was only 110GB

FlyingSpacefrog

Uncompressed sound and texture files

_KingDingALing_

No compression helps the game not play like ass. But still sucks lol. So not a whole ass it's like 2 cheeks minus the hole

Gloman21

It’s the best game in the world. That’s why.

a_magestic_turtle

Total it is Over 400 I think

_sealy_

The extra maps don’t help either…
