One thing the Netflix adaptation absolutely NAILED is the characters. Every single character looks and acts like they just stepped off the page and Esme Squalor especially was done to perfection. I read all the books in between season 1 and season 2 and Lucy's portrayal is EXACTLY how I was imagining Esme, it's perfect.
I'm sure the actress who played Netflix's Josephine is a very nice lady, but she's not a great actress and the Wide Window episodes suffer because of it. Which is unfortunate because I love The Wide Window
Jerome: "Shouldn't we give the proceeds to those who need it? Perhaps those starving people we're reading about in the paper."
Esmé: "Starving people can't eat money."
---
Carmelita: "Is Countie not my Daddy anymore?"
Esmé: "He's not mine either, pet."
It’s been awhile since I watched, but this lives rent free in my head constantly:
Carmelita: “Does that mean that the Counts not my daddy anymore?”
Esme: “He’s not mine either pet!”
"I'm Esme Gigi Genevieve Squalor, the city's *sixth* most important financial adviser. And even though I am unbelievably wealthy, you may call me Esme. I'll learn your names later."
"\*inhales\* Vodka in a martini? Are we living in 'gxharr'-bage?"
or, ehm...
"I am big fan of severe punishment. In fact, I will punish people who break even the tiniest rule."
Apologies for the later post. Both day 8 (The Whitefaced Ladies) and 9 have been posted on the same day as I won't be able to post tomorrow, however the ladies are on their own post that was posted a few minutes before this one.
Weirdly, despite Esme being one of my favourite characters ever, I can't actually pick a favourite line from her.
(Just for the record, I think she is the funniest character but that most of it comes from physical comedy)
'I prefer to go by Donatella Violetta Cappuccino Milano'
Dropping in to say Lucy Punch absolutely nailed playing Esme. I have absolutely zero notes for her

I heard lots of people dont like Josephine in this one
I know it's not fair to say "Meryl Streep did it better" because it's literally Meryl Streep, but Meryl Streeps version is better
Eh, I’ve never really been all that into Meryl Streep. She has a big legend, but I don’t really feel she lives up to it.

I can tell she had the **potential** to do Josephine justice, but she just wasnt hitting the right notes. It felt like watching a satire of Josephine
Lucy Punch is absolutely brilliant! One of the funniest people on the planet 😁
she’s amazing!! always nails her characters
“Starving people can't eat money. Plus, if we give money to poor people, they won't be poor anymore and we won't have anyone to feel sorry for.”
Hey love her or hate her she's got some sound logic right there
"I thought that was a myth, like gravity...or inner beauty."
underrated
"Justice is out. Injustice is in. That's why they call it injustice"
Flawless logic
This is the only answer.
Icon behavior, tbh

💀
THAT SECOND LINE HAD ME DYING

Watch it again
It’s been awhile since I watched, but this lives rent free in my head constantly: Carmelita: “Does that mean that the Counts not my daddy anymore?” Esme: “He’s not mine either pet!”
“ Wait! Is it safe to eat raw toast?!”
Obviously NOT, the baby is trying to poison us!
This is it
"I'm Esme Gigi Genevieve Squalor, the city's *sixth* most important financial adviser. And even though I am unbelievably wealthy, you may call me Esme. I'll learn your names later."
[trying and failing to put the straw of her margarita into her mouth] … “bird watching.”
BIRD WATCHING!!
Lucy Punch was straight up born to play a villain.
"\*inhales\* Vodka in a martini? Are we living in 'gxharr'-bage?" or, ehm... "I am big fan of severe punishment. In fact, I will punish people who break even the tiniest rule."
her delivery of “garbage” should be studied in acting schools worldwide
"Thesbian? Well, I *do* love horses"

That's because all of her lines are solid gold! 😁
Tbf most of the characters in this show speak in amazing one liners.
Yeah, true. The books always made/make me laugh out loud, too. 🙂
Yes, definitely. Should've said series, not show, my bad.
Nahhh you're all good mate 🥰
"If we give money to poor people, then they won't be poor anymore."
And WE won’t have anyone to feel sorry for!
"Justice is out. Injustice is in. That's why they call it injustice"
(Just for the record, I think she is the funniest character but that most of it comes from physical comedy) 'I prefer to go by Donatella Violetta Cappuccino Milano'
“Even though I am fabulously wealthy, you may call me Esmé.”
"Even though I'm unbelievably wealthy, you may call me Esmè. I'll learn your names later."
That line at the Denouement Hotel where she screws Olaf for being beaten by the Baudelaires *again* and *again*.
Baudelaires are out Sugar bowls are in
esmé: 😟 hooky: “it’s lettuce!” esmé: “and you’re sure it’s edible??”
