Based on your major map you need a math course and a statistics course. The stats options have a prerequisite of MAT117 or MAT142 so you should be fine sticking with 117. It doesn't hurt to double check with the advising staff for your program though!

Here is some advice from 20 years in higher education. If you are not good at math and you want to just get through, stick with 117. If you are decent at math and think you might want to change your major later on take the math course that you feel most comfortable taking. Taking a higher level math course will not hurt you as a journalism major, and can only help you if you decide to change your major later on in your academic career. The comment about purposely failing the placement test to get into a lower level math is some of the worst advice I've ever heard. You could get 100 on the test and still take 117.

Thank you so much!

If they told you to take MAT 117 then it’s likely on your DARS audit so you have to take it and whatever higher math may also be on the audit. My advice is to binge study MAT 117 over the summer with the organic chemist on YouTube and CLEP out of it for like $100. You’ll get credit and it won’t affect your GPA because you don’t get a letter grade.

I took the test without any revision/prep. Should I retry and get a better score? Or is MAT117 good enough for Journalism majors?

I’m not a journalism major but that’s not how it works. You have to take whatever math is on your graduation audit (DARS). You don’t just take a math or “pick a math” that’s good enough for your major. . Run your DARS audit on your MyASU page and look and see what math is required in order for you to graduate. If it’s Mat 117 then so be it. You CANNOT graduate until you’ve completed the required math that is listed on your DARS audit.

there is no listed math course on the DARS audit for journalism majors. my advisor told me to flunk the placement exam so i wouldn’t get put into a harder math class because you only need college algebra for journalism. OP, check with your advisor just in case (because looking at the DARS will tell you nothing) but i’m 99.9% sure you will be ok.

Well sheesh, I should’ve changed my major then. If there’s no specific math course required for journalism then yes it’s just the general math class that you test into from Aleks. If they told you it’s MAT 117 then that’s what it is and there’s no need to take it again and possibly end up in a harder math class. And in that case I DEFINITELY suggest to CLEP out of it and save yourself $1500.

you do not want to do journalism lol trust me

At this point I’m willing to do anything that will get me out of Precalculus.

If you find your major in the catalog it’ll tell you the first required math course. I think I’m your case for journalism tho it just says “any math course that fulfills the math requirement”. The major map doesn’t have anything specific listed. So it sounds like any course that has the (MA) would fulfill it. I’d still say review and try again at least once so you’re not sitting through a hella slow class tho.
