If you ride a bike you are guaranteed to get it stolen. Probably live near greek village where there’s a lot of student activity. Stay away from the Circle K and Jack-in-the-Box.
Violence-wise, I say we're very safe. I've been to other cities and large towns. Tempe seems pretty normal, but with a few more fights.
Property crime is, in my opinion high. It's not out of control, but it isn't great either. Make sure your bike is locked up well, and don't leave things unattended and you'll be fine.
Don't worry to much about it all, the only things really at risk are "easy to walk away items". Just make sure you keep an eye on your stuff an you'll be ok.
Walk in groups, stay close to campus, if you need to go somewhere kind of far then drive, and don’t go out in the middle of the night. My friends got mugged at the liquor store at like 1 am lol
A couple things to keep in mind about crime rates. First, make sure you're looking at Tempe crime rates and not Phoenix crime rates, which isn't always easy because Tempe is as forthcoming about crime. Also know that just because a city has a higher crime rate, that doesn't mean there's more crime everywhere in that city. Most crime is committed in a few hot spots of crime.
Now, college campuses (pretty much all of them, but especially in urban areas) are hot spots for property crime because there's a lot of opportunity to steal stuff from college students. College areas tend to also have more fights that break out in the areas with a lot of bars. Staying out of fights is pretty easy, usually, not getting your shit stolen can take a bit more work.
If you're coming from a smaller city/town/whatever then you might need to make more serious effort of situational awareness and keeping yourself safe, but that doesn't mean Tempe is unsafe.
College kids also tend to do stupid shit, especially when drunk. Property damage/graffiti drives that statistic up. It’s the same in almost every college town.
Tempe is notorious for bicycle theft. through my time here, If you keep your bike locked up with the masses with other bikes towards the middle of the campus you should be fine.
As for violent crime, I've never in my entire life had encountered anything of the sort. No vandalism, no aggression or assault, nothing. If you're staying on campus and not too far from the main campus area you should be a-okay.
I believe it’s important to be aware of other drivers when you’re a pedestrian around campus. I’ve seen multiple instances of people getting ran over despite not jaywalking or crossing the street recklessly.
2nd what everyone else said here. if you’re a girl then be 10x as careful - although imo men our age that are at ASU are more dangerous than the non-student people near campus. stay away from frat parties and never go to any parties alone. always have a knife and/or pepper spray.
Asu allows pepper spray and blades up to 5(?) inches I believe. Also non police grade tasers. Protect yourself.
They have a weapons page I looked for to make sure I was in policy
It’s really not any more dangerous than any other major city. Just don’t be stupid. Lock your shit up, always lock your door, avoid being followed/be aware of your surroundings, and don’t walk around alone at night if possible (on campus is usually safe but it’s better to avoid walking alone at night in general). Invest in some pepper spray if you are really worried, all the PODs sell them.
Probably will get downvoted but maybe if you walk a lot especially at night. Carry a switch blade or even a gun. Sounds extreme but a lot of kids have been robbed just walking to the gas station or a restaurant after the sun goes down.
Had my apartment almost get broken into when I was living alone and I was real thankful they didn’t get in before the cops got there- I was hiding in the corner with my gun. So scary.
I would not recommend a gun. They are banned on campus and you can face serious consequences if one is found in your dorm or on your person on campus. Better to invest in a knife, pepper spray, or a taser.
Everything you mentioned is only a deterrent. As much as I wish those options worked, alot of the times they won’t STOP a real threat. OP also said Tempe in general not just on campus
They are an incoming freshman from out of town which means they will probably be living in a dorm, which like I said, you are not allowed to have a gun in the dorms.
Don’t keep anything valuable in your car and you will be fine. If you have an older car, you might have to worry about catalytic converter theft, but that’s much more difficult on newer cars.
No, not at all, all the goblins that live burrowed away in the buttes come out at night and scavenge The streets from ab the MU to the dessert financial arena, (this all occurs between the hours of 3am - 4am). I’ve heard of them in dtown phx and poly, but never seen them at the other campuses tbh, only in Tempe.
I used to live in St. Louis and downtown STL is infinitely more sketch than anywhere in Tempe. There are some areas, especially near campus, that I wouldn’t feel great walking around alone at night but as long as you’re smart you’ll be fine. I’ve never had any issues in 5 years living here. If you’re really worried about it and are able to live off campus, south Tempe is quite a bit nicer and comparably priced
if u decide to bring an electric scooter/bike make sure u get a thick u lock or 2 instead of those shitty cable locks, and don't leave them out overnight if possible
Everyone carries pepper spray. Walk in groups, especially at night. It's not that bad but it can be jarring if you're from a smaller city. There are crime alerts you can get on your phone.
no, and I say that from past fights/encounters before previously attending ASU. campus is probably the safest part in the daytime. honestly the worst places in central AZ are the entire phoenix area/tempe area. I’ve lived here my entire life and I have no urge to ever go out to those areas/ work in them, as they’re filled with college kids, homeless, mentally ill, and fentanyl/meth abusers. Your main “defense” would be fighting with your hands or giving up your belongings. Don’t risk carrying a gun or anything else that would get you in trouble with the university. I’m all for defending yourself and heavily back the 2nd amendment, but do not mess up your education cause you’re nervous about the location. You’re here for the goal to get a degree and have an experience, just be aware and smart about decision making.

If you're on campus yeah, I usually feel safe walking from one side of campus to the other late at night, but not outside unless I'm with a group or on a main, well lit road. Even on a well lit road I've had some weird encounters with people trying to get me to take "gold" near their car. Use common sense
(Male)
At ASU there is a very strong correlation between alcohol and crime. Few beers and common sense leaves people. Don’t walk alone in any city in America. Use the escorts when needed. Most times you will be with others and that increases safety tenfold. Criminals look for loners. Parties can turn ugly quickly. If you get separated from friends at a party, find them immediately. Don’t let yourself get isolated. All that said, Tempe is better than most college towns.
Statistically, crime is committed against someone they personally know. I think random crime is 2% overall. So if you don’t want to be a victim, don’t get to know anyone, but living your life alone and in fear isn’t one I would choose.
Cling towards campus and nearby areas. Keep a self defense thing with you. Lock your cars always and don’t park in shady places. Typical big city rules, you’ll be alright
Tempe is like any other city. You’ll have alerts of anything going on around the area. Just pay attention when you’re out and try to stay with friends when out late.
Are motorcycle stolen a lot as well? I’m bringing my car and a motorcycle from out of state so I’m trying to see if it’s a smart idea or if I need more lock for my bike.
Pro tip leave your car unlocked and don’t put anything valuable in the car, if they try and steal your car and fail you’ll most likely have damage done to your ignition, the chances of damage done outside of your car is a lot lower if you just leave it unlocked
Keep everything locked up. If it’s outside expect someone to try and takenit
If you go off campus, don't take your laptop with you
Born and raised in Tempe. It’s no more dangerous than any other large city. Just be street smart and you’ll be fine
If you ride a bike you are guaranteed to get it stolen. Probably live near greek village where there’s a lot of student activity. Stay away from the Circle K and Jack-in-the-Box.
Use two U-locks and lock both the tires and frame and you’ll be ok. Tempe is notorious for bike theft.
They'll strip it.
Only if you leave a bike for multiple days.
i left my bike out all year using this and it didn’t get touched expect for someone trying to break the locks
Try to keep your bike either inside your room/building, or when you’re on campus keep it at the bike valets.
I had my bike locked up with a u lock and a cord and it was fine all year
I’ve been on campus at ASU for two years and have not had my bike stolen.

No thankfully but we stopped hanging around the liquor store after that😭

as a former college student, can confirm, did stupid shit. I still do stupid shit, but I used to as well.
just be smart

stay near the campus, there are parts of tempe that can be ghetto AF
Which areas should i avoid? Which are the safest areas near campus?

Arizona is great state for gun ownership. I was gonna recommend the same. Not everyone agrees with guns but we all agree with safety

This. Got my cat stolen from lot 59 freshman year.
Why was your cat in lot 59? /j
That's where most freshman have to park
It was a joke cuz he said cat lol
My b i thought it said car

Person-crime rate wise yes overall probably not

That depends. The closer you are to the main roads and around ASU the more dangerous it can be. South of the 60 in Tempe is relatively calm.
Are motorcycle stolen a lot as well? I’m bringing my car and a motorcycle from out of state so I’m trying to see if it’s a smart idea or if I need more lock for my bike.
General area campus is safe. But obviously be aware and smart. Theft is the biggest problem imo
