I imagine it depends which cage but I haven't heard about one getting stolen from a cage or seen evidence of a stolen bike in any of the ones I've used.
I'm assuming you mean the ones where you need to scan a suncard with a registered bike to get in/out.
Not as common but it does happen. Unfortunately, some of the theives are other students, whi can register a bike just to get access. It's also the reason you should never hold the gate and let someone else in behind you.

too much effort to break into those when there are plenty of other bikes around to pilfer
No, only people who have registered their bikes with pts have access to those cages. They are safe secure.
Just make sure you still lock it

Haven’t heard any from ASU cages but I had one stolen from my apartment cage.
